Problem opening large .Tif files

Hi...this problem is really frustrating. Preview will not open some large .tif
files (they're saved on Photoshop CS5 on a PC, with lzw compression).
The program just displays a grey screen...no error message.
When I email the images, no preview appears in Mail.
Is this a known problem with Preview in Snow Leopard, and can I do
anything about it?
Any help appreciated....

OK, I can verify that the file doesn't display in Safari or Preview, so it's not just you. From the error messages in the log, it seems that the built-in rendering routines see the file as corrupt. It does display correctly in QuickTime Player 7, GraphicConverter, OpenOffice.org, and LightZone. You'll either have to use another application to view the files, or get the author to save them in a different format. You can also file bug reports with Adobe and Apple, for all the good that will do.

  • Problems viewing large tif files in preview

i'm having trouble viewing large tif files in preview. the tif files are on a cdrom - when i click on the file to open it, it opens only the first 250 pages of the file. the file has approximately 3,000 pages. how can i get preview to open the rest of the pages?
    thanks for any suggestions.
mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

no trick - i didn't create the cdrom but it only has 3 tif files with approximately 3000 pages each, not 3000 large tif files. plus several smaller pdf files, but those aren't giving me any problems.
i don't know whether they're compressed, but i still can't get more than the first 250 pages to open, even after copying the file to my desktop. if anyone has any other ideas, i'd much appreciate it.

  • Problem opening large PSD files

Helo, We have 5 designers sharing design files across a windows network. Everyone is running  photoshop CS6 cloud subscriptions (which have auto updated to 13.0.1).
The team have created and opened PSD files fine since July. Over the last 3 weeks we have had 5 files so far become unopenable - we get the message: “could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version”. Could it be that they are too large? The problem files are larger than the rest at around the 1GB mark. We are running HPZ210 PCs with Windows 7, solid state drives for the software, regular HDD for the data, and 16 GB Ram. One file at least was housed on a hard drive as well as the server and neither the local or network version of the file opens so it doesn’t seem to be a server issue. Five people on different subscriptions and computers have tried opening the files to no avail. Files were working ok one day, then not opening the next. Anyone know of any possible fixes, or whether the files are just too large?
    cheers, Liz

Hey Curt, thanks for replying so quickly. I found the guff below re PSB, will check out this and the pixel counts with the team and post back.
    cheers, liz
PSB is a file extension for an image file used by Adobe Photoshop. PSB files are a large document format similar to a PSD file but for a larger image size. The largest image size supported by a PSD file is 30,000 by 30,000 pixels.
PSD file support has to be enabled in Photoshop's Preferences pane first, then PSB files can be saved at an image size up to 300,000 by 300,000 pixels. PSB files can be opened by Adobe PhotoShop CS or later. PSB files can be exported as TIFF for compatibility with other software.

  • Errors on open large jpeg files in Windows 2000

    Q. I am having problems opening large jpeg files (eg 40"x30" @270 ppi)
after having saved them in Windows 2000
    A. This is a known issue and can be resolved either by turning off
thumbnails for JPEGS or by using the JPEG2000 file format. The

Here is a registy fix for Win7 machines to the file association problem.
    This from TinusHDCA user:
I installed Photoshop CS6, then found CS5 was still there. I thought, hey, I don't need CS5 anymore, so I uninstalled CS5. then I found out that Photoshop was no longer available in 'Open with' when right-clicking an image...
    So I went into the Registry, HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\Photoshop.exe\shell\open\command, and changed the (Default) from "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5 (64 Bit)\Photoshop.exe" "%1" to "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6 (64 Bit)\Photoshop.exe" "%1" (so changed CS5 to CS6) - and now I see 'Adobe Photoshop CS6' in my 'Open with' list when right-clicking an image...

  • Problems opening a TIF with 14.828x18.446px (26,9MB)

    Hi there,
I'm trying to open some TIF-files coming from a GIS.
These files are 14.828x18.446 pixel size with only 26,9MB file size.
The "out of RAM" message pops up.
    I'm running PS CS6ext. 64bit on a WIN7prof./64bit system.
RAM-usage set to 80% (=5694MB), about 300GB scratch on disk available.
It's possible to have a previev with windows-explorer.
Any idea what to do to open the files in PS?
    Thanks and regards!

There are 2 issues here that combine to cause them not to open: the way the files were written, and how much memory Photoshop will allocate for decompressing a single image tile.
Image Width: 14101 Image Length: 18206
      Resolution: 400, 400
      Bits/Sample: 8
      Compression Scheme: PackBits encoding
      Samples/Pixel: 3
      Rows/Strip: 18206
      Number of Strips: 1
The images are written as one huge image tile/strip that decompresses to something around a Gig per tile.
Decompressing that quickly is going to require allocating a buffer over a Gigabyte to hold the data.  Photoshop sets some limits on how large a tile buffer it will allocate so that you don't wait hours for the OS and Photoshop to free up the required space. Yes, we really had user documents that were spinning for an hour or more trying to allocate the buffer space to decompress them, even on a 64 bit system with quite a bit of RAM - hence the limits.  Your documents, written as a single huge tile, exceed the limits that Photoshop will allocate for a single tile.
The TIFF spec recommends that documents be saved in smaller tiles (though one line per tile is excessive).  Even moving to a few hundred Meg per tile would allow Photoshop to decompress the image data successfully.  Either you should choose different TIFF output options when scanning, or communicate to the makers of the scanner that they should read the TIFF specification and talk to Adobe about improving their TIFF implementation (which would send them back to me).
Also, the images are also written using PackBits (a run length encoding scheme) that is not a great compressor.  Using LZW or Flate would have decreased the size of the files considerably (half the size, or better).
For the time being, you can use some of the libTiff command line tools to unpack and repack these files to work better with Photoshop and other applications.

  • Unable to Open a .tif file

    I can open .pdf's fine. I'm using 9.0

just can't open a .tif file, says the file is corrupt, but others can open it with no problem using the same 9.0

I ran into a similar problem with outlook and Adobe Reader.  When recieving an attachment with a Tiff file the computer tried to open the file in Adobe reader and reader threw up the error message shown in this thread.  I reinstalled outlook and adobe and check to make sure that windows file association was setup correctly.  Finally I browsed to the folder in outlook where attachements are stored.  For more information look here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817878
I browsed to that folder and Tiff files were associated with Adobe reader in that folder.  Once I fixed the association problem the attachments opened up in outlook without issue.

  • Lightroom 1.4 - problem opening up NEF files

    Hi there,
I've been having problems opening up NEF files in Lightroom 1.4, a message keeps coming up saying that the file is not recognised. I'm using a MacBook Pro and can't get a solution - can someone please advise on the best course of action?
    Thanks!

    >a Nikon D3
I don't think that one is supported in LR 1.4. The camera was released after LR 1.4 was released. To get support for that camera, either upgrade to LR 2 or convert the NEF files to dng using the free DNG converter that you can download from http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/

I am using PSE 9. I had no problem opening my Raw files from my Canon Rebel XT  Now  I have a Rebel 5ti and pse 9 won't reconize the Cr2 files

    See this faq:
FAQ: Will Photoshop Elements work with my camera, or Why won't my raw files open?
That will explain why each new camera model uses its own raw format. (.CR2 does not indicate a format, only a Canon family of formats).
The first link tells you what version of camera raw is needed for your camera : https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
    You need ACR 7.4
The second link tells you which ACR versions are supported by Elements versions Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
    PSE9 supports version 6.5
Further down on that paper, you get links to download the free Adobe DNGconverter for Mac or Win.
This standalone software can batch convert a whole folder of raw files to the DNG raw file format that your present PSE9 can read.
Otherwise, you would have to upgrade to version 10 or later.

  • Opening large photo files produces black screen

When opening a small (less than a meg) photo, it works find. I'm able to move to the next file. If I open a large file (8-10 megs) it sometimes works fine however if I use the arrow to move to the next file in the folder I get a black screen. Also if I have a folder of many large photo files I can see all the thumbnail photos at a small size. If I try to increase the view size to large some will be black, however if I click on the file many times it opens fine, sometimes not.  It was working fine, just recently started to act up.  Using adobe photoshop I can open each file so I know they are there and not corrupt files.

If you are trying to install the updated Epson scanner driver when you get this message, it will be due to the installer not being digitally signed - which is odd if it is an updated driver. To get past this block, which is a function of Gatekeeper, hold down the Control button and click the installer. A pop-up window will appear. Select Open from the menu. You will now get the option to install the driver software.

  • Any news on the problem of large CHC files increasing size of roaming profiles?

Any news on the problem of large CHC files increasing the size of roming profiles?  Thank you.

I talked to the product manager.  Here's what he said.
This was addressed in our last release.  CHC 4.0 changes the location of the locally stored documents so that they are longer included when users synchronize their roaming profiles.  The CHC will even move previous files to the new location when users upgrade.

  • Problems opening & printing pdf files created on a Mac

I am at my wit's end! I recently upgraded to a new version of Acrobat and suddenly a lot of my clients could no longer open my pdf files. I uninstalled the latest version of Acrobat and reinstalled an older version (Acrobat 8.1.3). Some clients started being able to open my pdf files but others could not. So I started using the Acrobat Share server and sending links. Some of my clients cannot open those either and many cannot print even if they can open the files that way. I personally also cannot print from the Acrobat Share server. The pdf files print out with all the surrounding graphics and application design elements. I also can't open the pdf files that I created on my Mac using my PC laptop running Vista. I have tried opening and printing both pdf files and the Acrobat Share links from my Mac and my PC laptop running Vista, to no avail.
I was under the impression that compatibility problems between Macs and PCs were largely a thing of the past. I was also under the impression that the whole point of exchanging pdf files was that pdf files are cross-platform compatible. Not only am I am losing tons of valuable time, I may be losing credibility with my clients (especially since I have an IT background). I desperately need to know what version of Acrobat I should be running on my Mac so that when I scan documents into my Mac, the pdf files that are created are completely 100% compatible with both Mac and PC operating systems regardless of what operating system and what version of Acrobat my clients are running. I also need to be sure that those same pdf files I create on my Mac can be seemlessly printed out from either a Mac or PC regardless of the operating system or Acrobat Reader version. If anyone can help me get to the bottom of this, I will be eternally grateful. Thanks.

This file downloaded and works fine for me in Preview on both OS X 10.5.7 and 10.4.11 (and opens in Acrobat Pro 9.1.1 and 8.1.5, and the latest version of Reader on both versions of the OS). As expected.
If you're printing from Acrobat.com by right clicking in the image area and selecting Print, don't. This isn't printing the PDF, it's printing the Flash frame that contains, as you've noticed, buttons and other elements. (Adobe's Mac Flash plugin is notoriously buggy.) Direct your clients to download the file by selecting the download button, not by right clicking and printing.
Again, your PDF file is fine.
