Problem opening Office documents from the desktop
Hi all,
I'm a new Mac user who just installed the Student/Teacher edition of Office for Mac 2004 (yes, i removed the trial version first), and I'm having trouble opening my documents when I double click the icons on the desktop. I get an error message that says "Unexpected error occured (error code -10660)". I can only open the docs if I open the appropriate program first.
Is this normal for a Mac? My PowerBook is only 1 month old, and I don't want my unfamiliarity w/Macs to cloud a serious problem if there is one.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
RH
I learned something new:
I hit Control+Click and selected Open With and clicked Word, and I got a new error message telling me that I couldn't use that application b/c it was in the trash. The only thing in my Trash is my Test Drive version, which just expired. When I dragged the Test Drive folder to my desktop, I was able to double click any Office doc and open it directly.
I've clearly made a mistake in uninstalling the Test Drive version. How can I fix this, and do I need to remove (and re-install) my complete version of Office to do so?
Thanks,
Reema

Problem opening Office documents from KM
Hello, I have some problem opening Office documents from KM.
We stored a lot of office documents (Excel, Word ecc.) in a File System repository (the standard repository "/documents"), when I open one of these files, before to view the document, a little logon window appears, it asks portal user's credentials.
If the user presses the "Cancel" button the logon window will be closed and the document showed, but on the next attempt to open an office file the system will asks again the user information .
If the user gives the right information the documents will be showed and the logon window does not appear again..
How con I avoid the logon request for each Office document in my repository?
Any suggestion??
Best RegardsThank you a lot Brad!!
We use Office 2003 and the note 549610 solves our issue!!

Can't open Office documents from share on Windows 8
We have a problem with a customer that they can't open Office documents(Word,Excel etc.) on Windows 8.1 image on a network share. The error message is just that the document can't open.
The documents are on a sharepoint site and we can open the documents within the site and also we can open the Office documents on a Windows 7 image from the networkshares.
Also can't open the documents if i copy them to the local desktop.
I think there is a group policy for Windows 8 for this but I don't know for sure?
Anybody?Hi,
As I understand, the issue is that customers can’t open office documents on windows 8.1 on a network share or copying them to the local desktop.
Per my test, I can open documents on windows 8.1 on a network share.
1. By default, Word doesn't trust files in temp directories from your browser. You can add the
network address and local address to the trusted list. From Word 2010/2013: Click File > Word Options > Trust Center->trust center setting->add new location.
2. You can create a shortcut on the desktop using the network address and then open the documents by that way.
3. To narrow down the research scope that you can create a new document library->Download a problematic file (an Excel workbook or a word document) to your local->Upload the local file to the new document library->do the same option to check if
the same situation will occur.
There is a similar case:

Hi Sara Fan,
Thanks for your reply.
I have added the profile to the trusted locations but without success. Also a shortcut is not working. I still can't open any Office document on that location(Error message: location ***.xxxx can't be opened). The problem occurs on every client.
1. Opening Office documents under local administrator account, domain admin account is working fine
2. Re-image the machine is not a solution
4. All locations use the same Windows 8.1 image through SCCM
3. When the user logon to another location(site) it's working fine and they can open Office documents so it seems site-specific
4. The problem is specific from 2 sharepoint shares. We can open office documents from other shares.
5. Can't open Office documents from the library on the sharepoint site(browser), but on another location it's working fine.
Problem only occurs on Windows 8.1 image with domain users. Other locations of this company do not have the problem. Note, every location have their own OU for users/clients.
Any other suggestions? -

is anyone experiencing problems with opening mission control from the desktop. Running mountain lion with parallels 7 and windows 7
I had been having a similar problem on Lion with Safari pdf files despite downloading the latest Adobe Reader XI.
I would constantly get the same messages - There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired. And I would get a blank page when I tried to print the pdf if I tried printing from the Safari web page using File - Print from the top toolbar on my laptop.
Then I came across the grey Safari lozenge with action icons.
This allowed me, without downloading the pdf, to print the pdf file direct from the Safari page by using the Print icon on the grey lozenge that appears centrally three quarters down the screen.
Then I discovered that if I save the pdf using the Save icon from this same grey lozenge on the Safari page I can open and print this pdf version from my desktop.
I've tested it with a couple of different pdf files and these methods work using the grey lozenge icons but the same pdfs files don't work using File - Save As on the Tool Bar. -
Can't open Office documents from network share
Dear,
I have a user named X that can't open Office documents from two specific shares. We call this shares T and U.
When the user X opens Office documents the error message is "...xlsx can't be opened". The problem is not client specific because when I login on the same client I can open the documents without any problem. If you copy the file to your desktop it
opens fine.
Any idea?Anybody?

Not able to open office documents from SharePoint site using Forms auth on a Mac with Office 2011
I posted the same question on the Mac Office forum (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2011-macstart/not-able-to-open-office-documents-from-sharepoint/7fba517b-ebd1-4e90-a54a-c70c5f035146?tm=1418836613595) but figured it's probably more
of a SharePoint question so I'm going to try here as well.
We just discovered an issue where a user logs into a SharePoint site using Forms based authentication. When clicking on an Office file they get
'Sorry, this site hasn't been shared with you' message:
The user can download the file and can also open the file within the browser (Office Web apps). This SharePoint site is on a Web app that uses mixed authentication (forms for external partners) and Windows/Kerberos for internal employees.
When logging into this same site as an internal user I am able to open the file just fine.
I checked the 'Microsoft Document Connection' settings and selected and deselected 'Enable Basic Authentication' and neither helped.
I also tried to add the site URL under 'Microsoft Document Connection' -> Add connection -> Connect to a SharePoint site. When I put the site URL in and click 'Connect', I get an error saying that 'Only connection to SharePoint or OneDrive
servers are supported' message. If I try the same thing as an internal user using Windows/Kerberos authentication I am able to connect to the site just fine.
Any ideas??Hi Szamir,
As you are using Form Based authentication to open the documents from SharePoint site, I recommend to check the things below:
Make sure that the user has permission to view the documents in the site.
Please select "Sign me in automatically" when you sign in the login page.

Problem to open Office documents from Sharepoint
Hello All,
We have published SharePoint 2013 (NTLM authentication) via TMG 2010. However, we are having the following issue:
When users try to open (https connection) any Office Documents to Office 2013 they get prompted for credentials, then after they provide credentials they get "Sorry, we couldn't open <URL of the document>". The prompt for credentials is ok because
persistent cookies are not option for us. We don’t have Office Web Apps in use and we want to open documents to client application. Our company users machines are Windows 7, Office 2013 and Internet Explorer 10/11.
I made some tests and everything work fine with:
Windows 7, Office 2010 and Internet Explorer 10/11
Windows 7, Office 2013 and Internet Explorer 8
Almost fine:
Windows 7, Office 2013 and Firefox (latest). With Firefox it works if I open any Office document from summary link list but not if I try to open from inside document library. If I open from document library (right click) to new tab or to new window it works
fine.
Any ideas what’s going on? It must be something with IE 10/11 and Office 2013. I also tried with TMG persistent cookie and then I can open Office documents with IE 10/11.
I also checked with fiddler what happens and I can see that everything stops to 401 error.
Thank you,
Miikka Lehtonen
Turku University of Applied Sciences LimitedHello Miikkal,
You need to enable SharePoint class in IE. Please follow this
blog and follow this
article.
Once, this is done you can Enable all the IE settings to load for Intranet and Trusted zone settings
Put your site in compatibility mode and trusted zone
Also, make sure that 2 versions of Office suite is not installed on the system. Eg. Lync 2013 and Office 2010 on one single machine
What happen when you by pass your TMG server. To do this we need to make host entry for URL directed to APP server IP Address.
Thank You, Pallav S. Srivastav ----- If this helped you resolve your issue, please mark it Answered. -
Open Office documents from NSS exported as AFP impossible
I have my Mac Lion 10.7.4 users accessing user spaces (NW 6.5.8 NSS exported
as AFP)
It is imposssible to open Office documents (doc?, ppt? etc)
Anybody has an idea why that is happening?
SebIt used to work at some stage in the past (early Lion with AFP fix on Mac
side)
Then it stopped working. But I could not pinpoint what could cause it.
I hardly do any updates to Netware box itself these days (none since Jan
2012)
Last NSS update I done was the very one N65NSS8c

InDesign CS6 Crashes when opening any document from the network
Below are my notes on this issue along with the useless crash reports that Adobe and Apple ignore.
File location showing now special or reserved words in path: /Volumes/design/Design/Print/COLOR CARDS/Color Card-Country/INHOUSE
After crash, reopens document from crash and reports no issues
Same behavior even if ID is already open
Same issue if files are on server share with or w/o oplocks
Same crash issue if opening from desktop w/ all links local to desktop
Reopen after crash from opening on desktop opens fine
ID version 8.02 (CS6)
OS X 10.9.4 same issue with OS 10.8.5
I have removed and reinstalled ID CS6 and all patches
This happens on ALL Macs in the office
The server is a QNAP with access via SMB, all users logon as guest. NO AFP is in use. Only SMB. No errors reported at server.

Problem opening Office documents
My problem is minor, but frustrating. If I receive an Office document via e-mail, clicking on the attachment in the e-mail does not open Word, Excel, etc. I have to first save it to desktop, open the program and then open the document. Any advice?
Hello! If using a two button mouse right click on the attachment and if not do a control click on the attachment and you can open it by whichever program you wish. Tom

Opening Office Documents from Flash
Hi, we're working with a product called ProForm to create online courses that are Flash-based. It's a pretty cool product, created by Rapid Intake and using ActionScript 2 as the basis.
In a recent course I've been running into a problem. I've created a custom Flash movie as one of the "pages" in the course. In that movie I have links that use the getURL function to connect to some local files, and target a new window with the "_blank" option. I've used this method many times with no issues, and when working with PDFs (thanks, Adobe! ) it works just fine across all browsers tested.
The problem we're seeing is that when we try to use this method to connect directly to Office documents, the links fail to open the documents in Internet Explorer. When using Firefox, they work fine, and soon after clicking the link the user receives a dialog asking if they wish to save or open the document. This is the behavior which we expected in IE, and which one can achieve by holding the CTRL button and clicking the link (and don't ask me how that was figured out, 'cuz I don't know). But when just clicking the link in IE, a browser window briefly pops up, then the thing disappears and nothing else happens - no file opens, no dialog appears, nothing. Very frustrating.
So if anyone has any experience with this issue and can offer any advice, I'd really appreciate hearing about it. While we can work around this (e.g. - converting Office docs to PDFs) it's not our first choice, and since none of our development team understands exactly what is happening and why, it would be useful for future development efforts for us to be educated. Thanks in advance for any help.Just to try to help the comprehensibility of the issue, I've posted demo page to illustrate the situation: http://www.zoomiechaser.com/demo/button_test.html
If you use IE and click on the link, the page will download as expected. If you click the Click Me button in the Flash movie, you'll see either a pop-up warning bar, or, if you allow pop-ups, you'll see a window flash quickly on the screen then disappear. I hope this helps, and that you kind souls can help me in return! -
InDesign CS6 opens all documents from the previous day on startup
First of all I am on a Mac using a Mobile Account. I have no admin control over this setup. Every 2 hours or the local environment syncs with the server and saves my 'computer'.
The problem is when opening InDesign in the morning to start the day hundreds of documents begin to open. They appear to be every document opened from the previous day (or more).
InDesign does not crash. They do not appear to be recovering, just opening.
I tried to clear the recovery cache, but that had no effect.
Is there something I can clear to prevent this from happening?I was hoping to find an answer as they are not sure either.
I think Larry's answer is right, restart (without the option key) and uncheck reopen windows. It will stay unchecked unless you check it on a later restart. -
Problem open "pages" documents from icloud
Hi,
I have pages for MAC and IPAD. Quite often I cannot open or save documents located on icloud drive. The same document can be opened if I transfer it to local disk or if I look to it using "preview" but when I try to point to the orginal idrive location I get the message "document cannot be opened" or "document cannot be saved" This is odd enough as in icloud settings have pages enabled. The all idea is making my documents on MAC and being able to read them using IPAD or MAC at my own convenience.
Any clue?
Thanks,I found it helpful to convert all my old Pages '08 files to .doc files. They can be opened by the new version of Pages.
Since the new version of Pages is no longer back compatible, and so not good for anything you want to keep for a long time, you might consider using an open source word processing application like Libra Office. That's what I had to do. After seven years of being a happy Pages user - archiving thousands of files in Pages -Apple has abandoned us. I no longer think it is wise to use the new Pages and then five years down the road (or sooner) not to be able to open them in a newer version.
If you would like a quick way to convert your Pages '08 files to .doc, let me know.
