Problem placing pdfs

I only started using InDesign on Wednesday, so sorry if this is a stupid question - but I can't seem to find a solution anywhere! I am trying to place a pdf file (very high quality advertisement for a law firm) into the magazine I'm currently working on designing, but when I place it in the InDesign document, the quality goes down massively, and it looks absolutely awful. Can anyone suggest what I might be doing wrong?

Nothing... your looking at a preview. Try going to View > Display performance, and turning it to High Quality. You can set this to be the default in your prefs as well.

  • Problems with placing pdfs in CS4

I recently upgraded to CS4. I am having a problem when I place a pdf into indesign CS4. When I place the pdf the size of the pdf is changing. For example I am trying to place a pdf that is 3.5 in by 4.75 in. When I place it in CS3 it keeps it that same size. When I place it into CS4 it changes the size to 4.515 in by 6.125 in. I looked at preferences and import options. I've searched for it and I can't figure out how to fix this.

No problems like that here on CS4.
Are you placing into an existing frame or onto a blank page (creating a new frame for the placed PDF)?
If this is going into an existing frame, check the settings on the frame to see if that is causing the unexpected scaling.
    -mt
PS:  from the numbers supplied, it sounds like the content of the existing frame is set to 129% instead of 100%.  That could be casued by the fitting settings mentioned by below.

  • Placed PDF not showing in CS3 under Mac OS Leopard 10.5.4

    Hi,
I have some job make in CS3 (13.02) with some placed PDF as link (not embedded). The place pdf show up correctly on IMac 10.5.2 but the same document does not show when open in CS3 on Intel Mac Pro 10.5.4.
Has anyone encounter this problem before?
    How do I fix it?
    Cheers,

  • ID CS2 Incorrectly Rendered & Output Placed PDF

Out of necessity, I run many plates as placed pdf's into CS2. Fully patched (patches for CS2 are long done of course) what appears to be a fine pdf failed to render a small simple gradient.
Sequence - A Logo was created in Illy CS5, info shows as Adobe pdf library 9.90, Compatibility 1.5 (Acrobat 6). The logo sheet was placed (lettersize trim) and cropped to the 2 Spot version In ID CS3. (Production notes, cmyk values, etc. cropped)
This CS3 file exported to pdf, and placed into CS2. CS2 failed to build the gradient included in one spot.
Any thoughts relevant to avoiding this. Screen shot shows problem.

It is the machine which see's the printer.
More to the point - It prints to a Mac Shared printer, an Agfa imagesetter.
Other Windows based machines and the Mac sharing the printer have one of two problems - Plates image with the fonts "crammed" . At the end of lines or paragraphs fonts are crammed, set upon/overlapping each other as if the device did not understand the spacing. (Send ppd fonts is always toggled in dialogs without effect.) The workaround is to plate all files with the transparency flattener. I avoid this extra step.
My primary Win Vista station cannot succesfully install the printer; the process I use is Bonjour Printer Wizard which adds Mac printers on Win machines. After discovering the Agfa, windows cheerfully loads a Cannon Bubble Jet driver for it. Quite annoying. I have installed the Agfa PPD local to my System PPD folder, but it's not quite right.

To make direct plates; the file in question was for another print shop, in this case I am their service provider.

  • Rotating placed .pdf

    Hello,
I'm running abobe CS4 Illustrator on my pc and am having difficulty rotating a pdf file that I placed onto the artboard in it's own layer.
When I rotate the image using either my mouse or the transform/rotate dialog box when I rotate past a certain degree the .pdf grows.... The extent box on the short end of the image is resized so that it is off the screen. When I grab the image again to rotate it, the axis of rotation has changed to the center of the now much larger box( which is primarily empty space). In addition when resizing the image it takes into account the newly added area which significantly skews the results of any resize.
Has anyone here experienced this problem? what is the cause, and how can I fix it?
    Thanks,
    Andres

    Hi Wade,
I'm attaching two screen grabs, one that shows the placed PDF immediately before the extent growth and one after.

  • Placed PDFs don't print correct size from InDesign CS2

I am using CS2 stuff on Mac OS (leopard) with Epson RX680 printer. It's a large document with several placed files. Two are PFD files (color) that print too large. Looks fine on the screen but the printed document looks like it's trying to tile. (Page is divided into four sections with large section of file printed into each.) These placed files print fine from Acrobat and PhotoShop. Also, the document has several placed PDFs that print great. Help. Am on deadline.

Thanks a bunch. Long story short, I printed from Acrobat in high res,
scanned it in high res to TIFF and used it that way. What a pain!
What a crime. It may look good on screen and even off your desktop printer, but you've now rasterized everything and captured the printer dots from your printer, which should reproduce quite nicely on an imagesetter.
The answer to this kind of problem is never to rasterize the PDF, but to find out what's wrong with the print driver or printer, but if you're going to take a shortcut, the least you should do is open the PDF in Photoshop at 600 ppi or (preferably) higher and save as a psd or tiff. Scanning is a waste of time and will only degrade things more. If the PDF is choking the printer, odds are pretty good a bitmap image with enough resolution to preserve some semblance of the vector data is going to do it too, by the way.

  • Indesign CS4 won't retain passwords for placed PDFs

    Hi,
I've just upgraded to CS4 from CS2 and I'm having a problem with placed PDF files with password protection.
I wonder if anyone knows why CS4 seems unable to retain passwords for secure PDF files that I have previously placed. Every time I open a document CS4 brings up a 'PDF security password' dialog and I have to enter the password for every placed secure PDF file in the document – no matter how many times I input the passwords and save the document it still happens.
I never encountered this problem in CS2, all I used to do was place a PDF, enter the password for the secure file and then the next time I opened the document with the placed PDFs it would just open without being prompted for the passwords – CS2 just 'remembered' them or something.
There's probably a setting for this somewhere, but I can't seem to find it, so any help with this would be appreciated.
    Thank you

Thanks for your replies guys, I think that a little more information about what I'm doing might help you understand my situation.
I am the creator of the PDFs, which are adverts, and these are secured with only one password (for permissions) in my workflow to allow them to be proofed to the client (but to prevent them from being passed on and subsequently altered by third parties.) The adverts are subsequently placed into an InDesign document for a publication which I solely produce.
Previously, when placing these files in InDesign CS2 you only had to enter the permissions password once to place the file and from then on InDesign CS2 did not require the password to be entered again even if you closed the document and re-opened it (unless the artwork had been modified).
I've been using CS2 with this workflow for years and there's never been a problem with my PDFs – not event at the pre-press stage as I generate a high res PDF file for the entire publication and upload this to repro with whom I have a close working relationship and I'm certain that they would have informed me of any problems. Although I think that the final PDF would not be affected by passworded files?
I quite agree, I wouldn't expect someone else to place a file that required a password to do so – but that's not the case here. I'd like to understand why CS4 (and interestingly it seems CS3) doesn't retain the permissions password after it has been entered in the first instance – in the same way that CS2 did. It's inconvenient to have to enter it for each advert in the document every time I re-open it.
Yes, I could remove the security, but for me, that seems to defeat the object of being able to generate just one PDF file in the first place to use in my workflow.

  • Acrobat 5 - Placing PDF into inDesign and Output to Colour Separations are Wrong

Acrobat 5 - Placing PDF into inDesign and Output to Colour Separations are Wrong
I have a 2 Page PDF file from my client which I have to have setup 2UP on 450x320 for Metal Plates for the Press.
I setup my page size in inDesign and Placed each page from the PDF file into the inDesign Document.
Because I need 4 Metal plates (CMYK) I had to check the Colour Seperations for the file by outputting it to a Postscript file with CMYK SEPS and then using Adobe Distiller to turn it into a PDF file for me to view the Seperations.
As I've shown in the screen shot below. The CYAN plate has boxes all around the images in the PDF file which will come out on a Metal Plate.
Compared to the Colour version of the Client's PDF they supplied me, there is no boxes around the images.
I know this is a error with dropping a PDF file into inDesign, outputting to a PS file and then Distilling it to the SEPS. I've had the same problem when I've opened a PDF file that has been distilled in Illustrator and the Artwork is sliced into pieces and uneditable.
Has anyone else found this problem and if so is there a workaround?
I'm using Adobe inDesign CS and Adobe Acrobat Professional Version 5.

Im facing a similar kind of problem. I want to store and retrieve Office files, PDF and Jpegs into/from the database to view them on web in disconnected mode. Please reply as I cant find any help/documentation regarding saving BLOB data into files. I was able to store file data into BLOB, using DBMS_LOB package.

I am having a problem opening pdf document.  I get error message: "Adobe Reader has stopped working" then I get Windows is looking on line for a solution, but then my document closes. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe Reader XI, rebooted my computer but this did not help.  I get the same message. What to do?

Can you open Reader by itself?  If so, check if disabling Protected Mode improves the situation [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].

  • Hyperlinks from placed PDF

    Hi
Is there any ways to pick up hyperlinks from placed PDFand convert them to InDesign hyperlinks (or buttons)?
Of course there´s no native text in placed PDF but converted hyperlinks could be for instance rectangles on the top of the original hyperlink.

    Importing PDF pages
Using the Place command, you can specify which pages you want to import from a multipage PDF: You can place a single page, a range of pages, or all pages. Multipage PDF files let designers combine illustrations for a publication into a single file.
The page range options appear when you select Show Import Options in the Place dialog box. The dialog box includes a preview, so you can view a thumbnail of the pages before you place them. As you place each page, InDesign reloads the graphics icon with the next page, letting you place the pages one after the next.
i InDesign doesnt import movies, sound, links, or buttons when you place a PDF file.

  • Printing problem when PDF is sent to the printer with certain fonts - missing text

I'm running into a printing problem when PDFs containing certain characters of the Calibri font are used.  The text in large sections of the PDF is missing on the paper version, but the text is there on the screen.  It's also happened when the PDFs we created were e-mailed out to a client and printed on their printer.  The problem is not present when printing directly from the programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, Visio, etc.).  I've been trying to get tech support from Adobe on this, but every time I call they apologize and say they will call back in 4-6 hours with an answer.  Same result each time, no call back.  If anyone from Adobe is listening, it's case number 184891587.  The font appears as an embedded subset when I look at the document properties.  Sometimes deleting one or two Characters allows for larger text blocks to be printed - i.e. removing a long dash in bold from the heading of a paragraph makes the paragraph reappear when printed to paper from PDF.  In all cases the PDF appears correct on the screen.  Printing as an image allows the text to appear, but the image quality isn't acceptable for small text, even at the 600 dpi setting on the printer.  If the PDF is sent out by e-mail, we do not have control over the end-user's printer setup anyway, so we need this to work in all cases.
The setup/process I'm using is as follows:
    Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-Bit
Microsoft Office 2013 - problem is present when printing documents from Word, Excel or Visio.  Even other variations on documents.
I've tried Acrobat versions 11.0.0 to 11.0.5 as well as Acrobat Pro 11.0.0 and 11.0.1.  Same Result
Printing to Adobe PDF as the printer, from the third party application
Printing to a Xerox printer from PDF using Acrobat - Text missing
Client prints to Konica printer - Text missing
I print to the wide-format Ricoh (which also does 11x17) and the text is present.
Is there something I'm missing?  Is the entire font not getting embedded into the PDF file?  I noticed that rolling back to a much older version of the Calibri font (1.02 compared to 5.72) makes the problem mostly go away, but it's not completely gone.  Is it possible the font is too large to be completely embedded?  Where can I go from here?

Success!  At least for now.  It looks like my problem was fixed with Adobe's most recent update, 11.0.06.  From the release notes:
    PDF creation
Added support for Lotus Notes 9.
Added support for WebCapture in IE 11.
Added support for conversions from AutoCAD 2013.
3652540 A blank pdf is created for files having hidden visual style.
3601108 Flow Chart converts as a multicolored square.
3654345 Word documents missing parts of images in conversion to PDF.
3654572 Temporary file size increases when creating pdf by combining multiple files into one PDF.
3670155 PDF file created with Distiller XI prints incorrectly to some printers. (Emphasis mine)
3599407 Checkbox check marks do not appear in these files.
3663233 IE Web Capture in localized OS: Icons and drop-down menu items are missing and conversion dialog is not localized.
3651931 Chrome Only: Few web pages when converted to pdf from Chrome plugin doesn’t show up the Save As dialog.
3597910 EPM Mode On: Web capture is not working on Windows 8-32 bit when cache folder is missing.
3610644 Firefox 23.0: With Firefox version 23.0 (latest), the WebCapture icon shows up very dim as if it is disabled.
3650244 ODA falis to convert DWG files to PDF for large files.
I don't know if that's definately what solved the problem, but it sure sounds similar and this is the update that made the printing problem go away.  We can't get the PDFs to fail at this point with our printers, even with Calibri 5.72.  I'll come back to thread if we have printing problems at the end-user locations.

  • Problem with PDF extract in a report

    Hi guys,
We are facing a peculiar problem with PDF extract in a report. When we run a report and export PDF , all the records in the result set are populated in the PDF. however, if I navigate away from the report and return back to the same report, and click on export pdf (with the result set already populated) i get a blank PDF document without any records. If i run the report again and then export the PDF it works fine.
Export excel works fine for all cases.
I am assuming it has got something to do with the way the system handles the cache for PDF export.
I also found that this occurs only when we have a value list filter with "none" set as default, and in this case, initially on opening  the report for the first time the query does not get executed automatically.
Any help on this would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks and Regards,
    immanuel

    Hi Immanuel,
Have you tried clearing the cache? My guess is, it is probably a defect.

  • Problems opening PDFs from SharePoint 2010 with Acrobat X Pro

Is anyone else having problems integrating pdf document support into Sharepoint 2010?
I now have the icon showing for any pdf documents saved in a Document Lirary, However I don't get the options of Checking out - editing an checking in. There is also no revision control. I think that when I open a pdf document, the servers own copy of Adobe Reader opens, and not my local copy of Reader or Acrobat X pro.
I've done what it says in the Administrators guide for Sharepoint integration and I'm still unable to get this functionality to work. As we use interactivve pdfs for a lot of our internal documentation the pdf integration features are very important.
Any help from users who have already been through the pain of sharepoint integration would be really appreciated.
    Regards.

    Hi Bill,
Looking at your initial problem of not being able to open the SharePoint hosted PDF document from the web browser.
Could you please verify that as per the "Enterprise Administration Guide", the DocIcon.xml file of your server contains the following line:
    <Mapping Key="pdf" Value="AdobePDF.png" OpenControl="AdobeAcrobat.OpenDocuments"/>
Please verify that the OpenControl attribute is also mentioned correctly. Without this the Acrobat Active X component would not be invoked.

  • Adobe Acrobat 9.4 Pro / Win7 Enterprise (64bit) - problem opening pdf

    Hello,
i got problems opening pdf files.
when i try to open the pdf file i get the message 'access denied'. That happens when i try to open it with a standard user.
opening that file 'as administrator' works fine.
I tried the Win7 compatibility check and Win7 tells me that Acrobat isn't compatibel. I tried to run acrobat.exe in different compatibilty modes (XP SP2/SP3, Win NT) -> no cure . Only thing working is to run Acrobat as administrator )

You can try to enable Admin rights on your computer.
In start menu use the search field, type in cmd once you see that  in your search result right click on cmd and Select "Run as Administrator".
Once the Command Prompt open's type in.
net user administrator /active:yes hit enter after typing it.
You should the message "The command completed successfully."
After you try this launch the software.

    1) When posting here, please use fewer comments. The comments that you have don't help folks who know Java read and understand your program and in fact hinder this ability, which makes it less likely that someone will in fact read your code and help you -- something you definitely don't want to have happen! Instead, strive to make your variable and method names as logical and self-commenting as possible, and use comments judiciously and a bit more sparingly.
    2) Try to use more methods and even classes to "divide and conquer".
    3) To create a panel with a background image that can hold buttons and such, you should create an object that overrides JPanel and has a paintComponent override method within it that draws your image using the graphics object's drawImage(...) method
    For instance:
    an image jpanel:

            imagePanel.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(600, 450));
            imagePanel.add(new JButton("Foobars Rule!"));
