Problem Playing DVD Movies Via Superdrive

Hey all,
This has been a random issue which has just started for me, and I can't figure out what to do. Basically I was conerting DVD movies I had bought to versions I could play on my Video iPod. Everything was going fine, and then all of a sudden, issues began when I popped in a DVD.
Issues:
1) Could hear the Superdrive making noises as if it was having problems reading the DVD
2) As a check, tried watching the DVD via DVD Player, and the movie was barely playing---only playing a few seconds at a time, pausing and then playing **all the while the dvd drive was making the noise**
Checks:
I ejected the DVD. Thinking the DVD was scratched, I put in a DVD that had worked earlier. Unfortunately, this DVD had the same issues!
Restarted the computer **in hopes this would clear something up**, but the issue remained.
Now, I am up to date w/ Software Update. Everything else seems to be fine. Any ideas? I've had this laptop for about 2years. It is a 1.83GHz MacBook Pro with Mac OSX 10.4.10.
Any help/suggestions is appreciated. **I really hope the drive isn't already fried---its only 2years old**

i have this exact problem, and i just saw a co-worker's MBP do this.
i've been told this could be the result of a recent firmware upgrade.
it sounds like an epidemic to me, and i'm hoping apple comes up with a fix. my MBP's superdrive is currently unusable.

this is my problem ! it seams like a lot of people suddently have this problem  why ?
You should keep in mind that these are technical support forums. Generally, the only people posting here are those with problems. The thousands/millions without problems don't ever come here.

  • What restrictions playing DVD movies?

    Hi,
I am drooling over the September release of Starwars - the original trilogy but I found out that DVD's will be sold with formats for specific regions, e.g. region 1 for North America, region 2 for Europe etc. This apparently relates to playing DVD movies on a DVD player but what is the situation re: DVD rom/DVD movie players on a desktop computer? Should I pre-order these DVD's?
    My thanks in advance!

till today i didn't know what exactly is libdvdcss for - now i know :-)
=> Linux supports all region-codes using libdvdcss
But your DVD drive might still curl up and lock itself. My drive has an internal "4 RC switches max" setting; everytime I put another RC disc in my drive, the counter will, well, count down until it's on 0. Then, the drive will lock to that RC and will refuse to accept any other regions.
Well, it did that until I patched the firmware a while ago.

According to /proc/ide my dvdrom is a DDU1621 (Sony), I will also look for an upgrade to firmware but I think you need at least DOS to install it. I wonder can it be done in Linux alone?
    Thanks!

  • Gx630 and problem with dvd playback via hdmi to plasma

I'm having problems playing a dvd from the gx630 while connected via HDMI to my plasma.  Without fail, the screen freezes up within 5 minutes of watching the movie.  I can watch a dvd on my laptop without a problem.  Any suggestions?

For what it's worth, I experienced the same thing recently with my GX630 while connected to a 42-inch Sharp Aquos. I tried a couple of different discs, but all of them froze just as you described and I had to reboot. I read somewhere that you have to "turn off" the laptop screen when doing this because of dvd copying restrictions, but I haven't looked into it any further.

  • Problem playing DVD with FrontRow

Hi, watched my first DVD (regular DVD, no rip) with Front Row. Two problems:
    - There was an incredible delay when I tried to use the infrared remote during the movie. Turning down the volume took the imac about two minutes to process the request.
    - At the end of the movie the computer froze up partially. I still could play/pause the movie via FrontRow but could not exit front row or switch to another application.
(The only other application running on the iMac during that time was iTunes, idling).
    Any ideas? Alex

  • X-Fi DD-DTS doesn't seem to work right playing DVD Movies with VLC Player or anything els

I have an X-Fi Platinum with the bay and When I try to Play a DVD with VLC Player And choose a/52 over s/pdif it sounds HORRID skipping and pausing and not functioning at all.. I must choose 5. channel to have Listenable Audio. The Same goes for AC3 Encoded Files If I chose A/52 over S/PDIF in VLC player it sounds like **bleep** and doesn't seem to decode it right. I must chose stereo 2 channel to listen to AC3 encoded video's.. NOTE The dolby Digital symbol DOES appear when i chose A/52 over S/PDIF so it does know it's a digital signal.. And I have the software set to USE hardware decoder and S/PDIF in Decode selected. NOW Here's something that REALLY makes me wonder wtf is wrong, I can connect my Home DVD Player or Cable Box over the Optical?in OR the S/PDIF in and the SOB works Fine, The Dolby Digital symbol comes up and everything sounds great! I get Dolby Digital surround no problem..Why in the heck does it not want to play DVD's using the A/52 over S/PDIF or any AC3 Encoded Files? What's the deal? And I am using windows XP Pro SP2 yadda yadda yadda?Message Edited by mbrown0420 on 07-25-20070:58 PM

  • IMac will not play DVD Movies

I have a first generation iMac G5 (OS 10.4.11) with a "MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-825" drive which plays CD and software DVDs fine, but it will not play DVD Moives, burned or commercial. When inserted, they spin for a minute then I get an error message "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." But it should be.
I have tried updating firmware, but the update said I did not need it. Also tried deleting the "com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist" as suggested in an earlier post. Nothing has worked.
I had this problem years ago and have updated the system since but DVDs still will not play. Does anyone know how to fix this or download a new DVD driver?

I do have the exact same problem, but even worse: my superdrive won't even read a software DVD. I would like to upgrade to Leopard (I bought the upgrade DVD) and I can't read it. Is there a way either to make the superdrive work again by myself or use another computer's drive for this purpose (upgrade to Leopard)?
    Thank you for your support.

  • Cannot play DVD movies in Windows XP

Does anyone know of any driver that I have to download in order to play just regular old DVD movies with Boot Camp? The CD-ROM aspect of the drive works fine, as I play games all the time...but when I try to play a movie it says that it cannot....has anyone found a fix to this?

Lol well unfortunately it didn't, I installed it, popped a movie in, and this is the messege that i got:
Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card.
It was just a regular DVD movie bought from the store, not a burnt one or anything...I'm confused...

  • Please Help My MBP is not playing DVD Movies

Hi since I updated from tiger to leopard my DVD player has a mind of its own.
When I insert a DVD movie it tries for 3 times and ejects the DVD out. If I try repeatedly then after 5 - 10 attempts it plays the Movies, but thats not the case always.
Any suggestions. Any advice is appreciated thanks
    Dinku

I recently had a similar problem. I upgraded all of my software on osx. i tried burning a dvd, and it crapped out half way through. since then any dvd I put into it would try and read a couple times, and then eject. CD-R's worked fine. I had to take it to the apple store, and exchange it, which was kind of a pain (i had to back up using time machine, and restore using time machine.... but at least I got to test out the time machine feature. i like it. im inclined to start regularly backing up) i got home, restored my macbook, upgraded, tried burning a dvd.. it worked so i guess you got a defective drive like me. my model was GSN-10S or something like that.

  • Radeon 9200 Problems Playing DVD

I am tryring to play a commercial Hollywood Video, Steven Segals Under Siege. It is playing just fine right now in my G3 Laptop and used to play just fine in my G4.
About 10 days ago I installed a Radeon 9200 ATI Card in my G4 in order to run my new 23 inch Apple Cinema Display.
Today I tried to play the Under Siege DVD in my G4. It plays for about 15 or 20 minutes then the computer screen goes black and the computer is frozen. I have to hit the reset button on the front of the computer.
I tried this 5 different times using Apples DVD Player Version 4.6.5. Same result. I then tried it using MPlayer & VLC Movie Player both of which I downloaded from Version Tracker. Same result. Freeze up & Crash.
Now all of the above happens when I am viewing the DVD with about a 6 inch screen. As I said I can get about 15 or 20 minutes then the freeze and crash.
But, if I set it to full screen, which I did with all 3 DVD players described above, it only takes about 5 minutes to freeze and crash.
Same thing happens when I try to play a Movie in Windows Media Player or Quicktime or Real Player at Full Screen Size. As long as I keep the size below about 6 inches it works. But when I try to go full screen size the Screen goes Black and the computer is running, I can hear it, but it will not respond to any key or movement of the mouse or to Escape. Must hit Reset Button.
I am thinking that this Radeon Card is the culprit. What do you think?
I know the Apple DVD Player works just fine as I am watching the Segal DVD on my laptop as I type this.
My computer works fine in every other way. Safari, Microsoft Word, Entourage, everything except playing the DVD or using a screen saver such as the Apple Beach Picture. Same Crash happens when I use it or any other large photo that covers entire 23 inch screen.
    Thanks for your help. Bob

My problem is a bit different than what Bob had posted about.
Whenever i play any movie (avi, mpg, wmv, ect) i'll occasionally get the entire display to freeze. EXCEPT the mouse curser and sound. This is using any video program: VLC, Quicktime, Safari, Firefox, ect.
Any MP3's I have playing in iTunes still play, Movie sounds can still be heard, I can move my mouse and when hitting command-Q a few seconds later I'll get the spinning beach ball for a while, which will then go back to the arrow. I can remotely log into my system from my windows machine and I tried to kill the running processes which didn't work. I than usually have to do a Reset by way of the button on the front (can hold the powerbutton and have it shut down too.)
I can't go back to my old Vid card cause than i couldn't use my spiffy LCD.
    any help would be appreciated.

HOW CAN I PLAY A DVD MOVIE ON MY MACBOOK PRO AND MIRROR IT MY APPLE TV.

Native mirroring requires a recent Mac (2011 or later) running 10.8

  • HT1657 Problem playing rental movies

I left my rented movie downloading overnight, and tonight when I went to watch it, it said it was ready; but when I tried to play the movie, it required a further 6 hours of downloading. What's going on, and how can I fix it?

I too downloaded the update to Quicktime, but it did not solve my problem. After much pulling out of the hair, I found a fix for myself. It may help someone else. This is what I had to do:
    1. Make sure that movies are set to play in a seperate window (found in Edit/Preferences/Playback.
    2. Open iTunes (DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PLAY THE MOVIE FROM iTUNES). Instead switch to the mini player mode (found under Advanced).
    3. Open your movie folder where the rental is. The movie folder is usually found in My Documents/My Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Movies. Right click on the rented movie and select "Play". It will open in a regular window, but you should be able to click on the control for full screen at the bottom of the play control. I hope this helps someone else... I have tested it three times and it's worked every time.

  • How to play DVD movie and video on Blackberry

This guide is mainly about how to rip DVD and convert video to BlackBerry Storm. First, you should know what video format is BlackBerry Storm supports.
Because DVD has CSS copyright protection, we need a program to rip DVD and convert video for BlackBerry Storm. The tool we use is BlackBerry Converter Suite, it includes two programs: DVD to BlackBerry Storm Converter and BlackBerry Storm Video Converter. This program not only supports BlackBerry Storm, but also BlackBerry Curve, BlackBerry Pearl and BlackBerry Bold series.
It supports audio and video format as follow:
Video: DVD, ISO, AVI, MPEG, MKV, MP4, MP4-AVC, M4V, WMV, MOV, 3GP, 3G2, MPG, FLV, ASF, VOB
    Audio: WMA, M4A, MP3, AAC, AC3, WMA
For more info about this BlackBerry Converter Suite, you can refer to here.
And here is the free download link, about 12.4 MB.
Now, let’s start the guide about converting DVD and Video to BlackBerry Storm.
Step1, Download and install the BlackBerry Storm converter, and then run it.
Step2. Load DVD into the software by clicking “Add DVD file”.
Here we can load three kinds of DVD's:
    1. Real DVD, just put the DVD in your DVD drive and click load DVD, (you can find it by clicking the triangle on the right of 'load file' button.)
    2. DVD ISO image, you can amount your ISO files in the daemon tools and then load the virtual DVD drive.
    3. A DVD folder, sometimes you may store the DVD folder in your hard drive, it appears like "Video_TS" "Audio_TS" folders. You can load it by clicking the "load DVD folders" button.
Step3. Select Profile, Subtitle, Audio, output directory setting
After you load DVD into the software, click the Profile drop-down list to select the proper format according to your BlackBerry Type, this guide is mainly about how to convert DVD and video to BlackBerry Storm, so we select the “BlackBerry Storm series(*.mp4)” profile.
Regular DVD movies usually have several subtitles such as English, French, German, etc. You can select one you prefer. You can also delete the subtitle by selecting “No Subtitle”. Selecting Audio is the same. If you want to join all your DVD files into one video file, please select the option named “Merge into one file”. For more advanced setting, you can open the setting panel by clicking “Setting”.
    Step4. Start the conversion
After all things done, you can click the “Start” to begin the conversion; it will take about 30 minutes for converting a regular two hours DVD movie. When the conversion finished, click “find target” to located the converted video on your computer, connect your BlackBerry Storm to computer, and then copy the video to your BlackBerry memory card, that’s all. Then you can enjoy your favorites DVD movies on your BlackBerry Storm.
For converting video to BlackBerry Storm, you can click “Video to BlackBerry” to run the BlackBerry Movie Converter, the operation steps are similar to DVD to BlackBerry Converter, So I’m not repeat here. But I want to add some tips to the BlackBerry Movie Converter.
    1. The Video to BlackBerry Converter supports batch conversion, so you can add multiple video files at one time.
    2. The Video to BlackBerry Converter embeds powerful video editing functions, you can use it to cut video, trim video, crop video, and you can even add a watermark to the video.
    3. The Video to BlackBerry Converter can also help you convert video file to MP3, WMA, AAC, etc audio, so you can set it as your BlackBerry ringtone.

STOP.....WHAT DOES "HOW TO CONVERT DVD MOVIE AND SET THEM ON THE IPOD" HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THIS DISCUSSION FORUM?
    This is very simple:
THe 5G IPOD is designed to seamsleslly play video acquired from the ITUNES music store. What does that mean? It means that if you get the video from the Itunes music store it should work, and if it does not work, you then post the relevant question in the ITUNES discussion forum.
If you want to rip DVD's, by all means, search in websites like www.videohelp.com, or search in google. If you do not find the answer there, then search here.
This particular question has been ASKED countless times and the last time I checked the forum was called Using Your 5th Generation IPOD", not "How do I get XYZ type video to play on the IPOD" nor "How do I use ABC program to rip, convert, a DVD"?
Have you checked first the video specs of the video ipod? What formats, codecs, etc? before posting your question here?
Don't get me wrong, we are here to help, but it is a little bit irritating to see newcomers post questions without having searched for the answers first, specially on a topic that has been addressed so many times as this one
