Problem playing files

I have some .dir files, which are the director published
format. I've been trying to get them to play and they will not
play. Every time I click on one in windows it brings up the "choose
what program to play these in" dialog. Adobe flash player is on the
list and is what I tried, but I did not associate these files with
that in case it didn't work and it didn't work.
I then did some web research and it seems that the shockwave
flash player is needed not the flash player. So I downloaded the
current shockwave flash player and installed it. I get no option
with that same dialog box to choose shockwave flash player. There
is none in the list.
So I uninstalled both the shockwave flash player and the
flash player and reinstalled the shockwave flash player. The flash
player shows up as an option still but the shockwave flash player
does not, nor can I find any sort of stand alone shockwave flash
player to try and play this .dir file.
I then read all the tech help on the adobe site for swf
player problems and checked my registry, which is fine and looks
just like their screenshots and yet I STILL can't get this file to
play. When I click on a .swf file it opens in the flash player of
course and plays fine.
HOW do I get the shockwave flash player to recognize these
.dir files and play them? Talk about frustrating, going through 3
hours of net research, installs, uninstalls and still not coming up
with a viable solution of any sort.

RM stands for Real Media. Real Media is one of the most popular formats for streaming content on the Internet, RealMedia includes the RealAudio codec for sound clips and RealVideo codec for movies. RealAudio and RealVideo files are often given the common RealMedia ".RM" file extension. RealMedia files are often heavily compressed so they can stream over dial-up Internet connections.
RMVB stands for Real Media Variable Bitrate. RMVB is commonly used to contain Real Video 9 and RA (Real Audio).
It is surprising that Xilisoft video converter cant support output for .rmvb... I advise you to try this best video converter, it supports output .rm and .rmvb from .avi perfectly, and let you edit the video files for high output effect... As for converting videos to wmv, this video conversion tool could fix it up easily too.

  • Problem playing Audio CD (.cda files) on Windows Vista

    Hey,
I am having problems playing an Audio CD. On XP everything is working fine. On Vista, the files seem to be playing, but I am not getting any sound (playing .wav files for example is also no problem, it's just the cda files from an audio cd).
This problem does not only occur in my own code, also the JMStudio application produces no sound playing tracks from the cd.
Is there anything that needs to be configured in Vista in order to make that work?
    Thanks a lot,
    sirpreis

I should point out there's no such thing as playing a CDA file. CDA files are simply indexing information about where to find the actual track data on the disk.
My best guess is that Vista's sandbox won't let Java go and fetch the actual audio tracks from the CD, because it's more restrictive than Vistas.
Other good guesses would including that whatever native code JMF uses to fetch CD audio works in XP but it doesn't work in Vista. That would certainly make sense...
If JMStudio doesn't work, your code probably wont ever work either. Sorry :-/

  • [Problem] Totem can't play files in Samba network

Hi, the problem I have is the one wrote in subject.
    Some infos:
I've working gvfs-smb, as I can access to files in Nautilus
Totem has no problem with codec or else
VLC is able to play files over the network, Totem does not
    The actual terminal log is:
    [ency@portatile-gio-antegos Films]$ totem blablabla.mp4
(totem:2157): GrlDmap-WARNING **: error starting browser. code: 0 message: MDNS service is not running
** Message: Missing plugin: gstreamer|1.0|totem|Sorgente protocollo SMB|urisource-smb (Sorgente protocollo SMB)
** Message: Automatic missing codec installation not supported (helper script missing)
    [ency@portatile-gio-antegos Films]$
I tried looking for the SMB plugin for Totem, but I think it does not exist.
    Also, using
    gst-play-1.0 blablabla.mp4
    does work.
    Some suggestions?

  • "Problem: Unable to play file type for...". Moderator please help

When using the spotlfy app from squeeze box I get this message every time: "Problem: Unable to play file type for" then list the song name. I can pick the music and see the art but no play. This is when I am attempting to stream from spotlfy on squeeze box. Logitech customer service told me spotlfy has not been running on squeezebox for weeks. Please help or I'll have to cancel subscription.

The 3rd party plug-in solved this problem for me, but only after I'd figured out a few other things, so I'm sharing them here: a) You have to have BOTH plug-ins running, both the v 1.0 "official Spotify plug-in "  *and*  the third party plug-in, which is on v2.3.8 as I write this. b) after you have activated the third party plug-in (and re-started the Squuezebox server)  You have to open up the settings for the plug-in ( link in the far right colum)  I don't think it matters how you choose to set these (I didn't mess with them.) The critical thing is that you must log into your Spotify account from within the this plug-in settings screen in order for the 3rd party plug-in to do its job.  (And maybe you'll have to re-start the Squeezebox server yet again.  I just do that without even thinking when trying to sort out these problems.) What makes this all challenging is that the symptoms change at each step:  At first, with just the official plug-in activated, I got the "can't read file format" error message.  After activating the 3rd party plug in (but before logging in from inside it)  Spotify appeared to be working perfectly on the screen of my Squeezbox controller, indicating that a song was playing (even the bright white light  that shows something is streaming was lit.) However. no sound was actually coming through.  After I logged in as above, I finally got music to match all the on-screen indications. No logic to this that I can figure out.  It just seems typical of life with Squeezebox.

  • Front Row: problems playing WMV files

I’m running a Macbookpro OSX 10.5.7, and have been working to config Front Row to play the movies on my hard drive (not in iTunes). I’ve installed both flip4mac and Perian in order to play all file types. This works great for QuickTime and the web. Front Row, however, has a problem playing my wmv files (all others play fine). When a wmv file is selected in FR, it only plays for a few seconds, then stops and returns to the movie list. I researched the solution provided by VideoDrive, which works, but I prefer to organize my videos into subfolders by category, rather than all in an alpha list in iTunes.
If I play a wmv in it’s entirety in Quicktime, it will then play in Front Row. This tells me it’s some sort of cache issue? My attempt to test this theory has been inconclusive, prob due to my ignorance.
    Troubleshooting to date has been:
Quitting FR from the Activity Monitor
    Deleting user/library/preferences/com.apple.frontrow.plist
    Uninstalling and reinstalling flip4mac
    Installing Perian
Would prefer not to have to rip all of my video to mp4 (I use iSquint), but I’m out of ideas.
Apologies in advance if this is covered elsewhere.

  • Problem Playing Video in Premiere Pro CS4

I am having a problem playing video in premiere pro. When I input any movie clip and try to play it in both the timeline and in the preview mode, the audio works fine but the video only plays a few seconds worth of footage at a really slow pace so that it takes up the entire time. For instance if I load a 3 minute video, the sound is normal but over the coarse of that 3 minutes I will only see a small number of the frames and they are cycled through in ultra slow motion.
All the clips play normally outside of premiere. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program. I have premiere installed on my laptop and it works fine. I have tried rendering the video first and it still doesn't work. I have tried holding shift before the program is loading and it did nothing. I have downloaded all the updates too. Videos seem to play fine in After Effects.
Also, I am having trouble when importing HD video into premiere and after effects. For some reason the programs freeze when I try to import footage from my Creative Vado HD pocket video camera.
    Here are my computer specs
    Windows Vista Ultimate 32 Bit
    Intel Core2 Quad q8200
    ATI Radeon 4670 Graphics Card
    Gigabyte Motherboard
    4GB of 800 Mhz RAM
This is really frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Keith,
The file extension .AVI indicate a "wrapper." All sorts of stuff can be in that wrapper *. Some of that stuff will play/edit fine. Much will not and create issues, as you have seen. Your camera uses a CODEC to create those .AVI files. That CODEC is the issue. I recommend G-Spot to find out what the CODEC is. Some times it's just a matter of having the proper CODEC installed on the computer. Most of the time, it takes much more than that - hence Eddie's links on "conversion." At least G-Spot will get us all on the same playing field, and explicit help can follow - probably to study Eddie's links. My guess is that your camera uses some form of DivX CODEC, hence the problem that you see.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
    * Think of .AVI like the foil wrapper on a stick of gum, when you remove the outer lable. You know it's gum, but not what flavor. Could be Juicyfruit, or Spearmint, or Double-mint. G-Spot will tell you the flavor. PrPro likes some flavors, but hates others.

  • Mplayer can't play files with spaces in their name

After scratching my head and reinstalling codecs several times without luck, and old memory resurfaced of this occuring before and I managed to solve the problem.
The thing is that if you doubleclick a file in Nautilus, and said files has spaces in its name, mplayer won't be able to play it, and gives a very cryptic error message, ie "cannot play file a%20b.avi" if the name of the file is "a b.avi".
The trick is mentioned in this thread -- you edit /usr/share/applications/mplayer.desktop and change 'Exec=gmplayer %U' to 'Exec=gmplayer %F'.
The bug has been around forever, and hasn't been fixed yet. Perhaps the mplayer devs don't want to fix it. In any case, I would propose that either we fix this in the mplayer Arch package, or that someone more knowledgeable than I get in touch with the devs about it.
Just a suggestion, but I think it's kind of important. It's really confusing to new users.

In my opinion, it it's not arch's job to fix bugs from upstream, no matter if it's mplayer or gnome's fault. Of course there are exceptions, eg if a bug in a critical package hardlocks the whole system, or adds a huge security risk.
I would like to belive that the general arch user is smart enough to find one of the 30 threads about this bug (or the entry on the bugtracker) and fix it themselves. Personaly I would put this in the same category as packages that don't have a .desktop file at all from upstream.

  • Creative Zen 32GB "There is a problem playing this audio" AAC

GCreative Zen 32GB "There is a problem playing this audio" AACZ All right, this is driving me nuts. I have a Zen 32GB and a Vista 32-bit machine. I have been encountering a lot of problems playing AAC files on my Zen--many of the tracks stop short, and the error message "There is a problem playing this audio" appears.
These are AAC files that I ripped off my own CDs using iTunes, so there are no DRM issues. ? I'm not sure if the problem lies in the actual ripping process (although the problem tracks play on my iPod without problem), the importing into my Zen using Zen Media Explorer, or my Zen trying to play the tracks. I've tried turning off my antivirus program, as well as checking the box in iTunes that double-checks for audio errors after ripping. I thought at first that it could be related to scratched CDs, but it also happens with pristine CDs.
I have latest firmware (.2.03) installed, and also the latest version of Zen Media Explorer.
I've searched this forum as well as Google for this exact error message, and don't get any related hits. Can anyone out there help me? Please?

Thanks for that response--I was beginning to feel a little neglected. It's disappointing, though--one of the reasons I bought the Zen was because it advertised AAC compatibility, so that I could have just one library of AAC files for my iPod and Zen, instead of entirely duplicate libraries of AAC and WMA files. Most of the AAC files I've imported into the Zen play fine--I just have to check all of the tracks to see which ones have that audio error. Usually, if I re-import the track, it comes out fine (eventually).

  • Problems playing mp3s after installing iTunes 7.1

I installed iTunes 7.1 today. After that, I have problems playing mp3 songs on my iPod (80 GB). The AAC-files play well. The mp3 songs can also be played on iPod via iTunes when its connected to my computer, but when I disconnect from the computer, the mp3 songs starts, and play for about 2 second, and then jumps to the end of the song and stop.
    Very thankful for any help.

that's typically caused by a problem with your QuickTime. (itunes uses QuickTime for audio and video playback.)

  • Problem opening files stored in a windows server using kde/smblcient

i use archlinux64/kde 4.3.3 at work. my laptop is conneted to a network having a windows 2003 server. All the network shares(if i remember correctly are ntfs) are on this server, so i use the smb:// protocol through dolphin and konqueror(as far as i know smbclient is used on the background).
the server is full of pdf and doc files and my problem is that i cannot access these files directly, getting an error saying that it is not supported by the os, so every time i have to copy the file locally and then open it.
any suggestions to avoid copying the files locally?

    mechmg93 wrote:
i want to avoid mounting my shares over fstab, because i use a laptop and there is no permanent network connection which makes the whole thing more complexed(order of daemons, when netfs should be started etc).
i read that a possible solutuon is changing the command of openoffice writer from oowriter %U to oowriter %f, which makes it copy the file to /tmp .
I cannot test it right now, cause im at home, but it seems that it may solve my problem.
As I mentioned in my previous post, you can set "noauto" in your fstab entries and mount selectively the shares you want with "sudo mount /share". That way you won't have to mess with daemons' order etc. The solution you found with openoffice reminds me of the problems I had with mplayer playing files through samba - I had to add a parameter like the one you post, but still I couldn't get it to work properly as the files had to get downloaded locally first. The only way to use my shares as local drives was to use the fstab.

  • Trouble playing files from Airdisk (wireless)

My wife and I regularly watch downloaded TV programs via my Powerbook G4. No Frontrow, no remote. My media library is set up as an Airdisk, and we patch the Powerbook to the TV and play files via Mplayer, as its buffer allows stable playback.
I was very excited to get a new MacBook Pro last week, and we were expecting to be able to play files via Frontrow stutter-free with wireless N, and (finally) have the luxury of a remote. No such luck.
Here are the problems I have been encountering:
    1) Frontrow drops frames and eventually freezes playback of files located on the Airdisk, usually after about 10 minutes.
    2) Frontrow often kills the network connection to the Airdisk when I try to access the files via the Frontrow interface (alias in Movies). Airdisk will be dropped from my "Shared" items in Finder, and remain unaccessible until I power cycle base station.
    3) Frontrow freezes, and I am forced to hard power cycle.
Is there any way to buffer playback to frontrow? I expect I am not the only user with this setup, is anyone else able to play video with Frontrow wirelessly via Airdisk?
    Thanks!

i restarted itunes and my atv2 (i was watching netflix at the time) went back to the menu as if it was disconnected from the network. however, this couldnt be repeated so maybe it was a spurious thing.
anyway, the music now plays just fine from my ipad and mbp.
its the video that will not work.
i noticed that i had to chnage the file extension of some files to "m4v" to be able to put them on the ipad (others transferred as "mp4) so i didnt know if this mattered. i was under the impression that as long as an audio or video file opened and played in itunes it could be played on any apple device (ipod, ipad, iphone, atv, etc). is this correct? if not, what format to i use when converting video to watch on my ipad or stream to atv2? i want to put my home movies on m tv as background when i am studying or otherwise occupied but just need something in the back ground.

  • How can I play files that are possibly corrupt (play fine in other apps)?

I have these three mp3 files that I am trying to add to itunes so that I can add them to my ipod. They play fine on winamp and I've listened to the entire song on each track without any problems. Itunes will not let me add them to the library though. It doesn't give me an error message, it simply doesn't add them. I've cleared my entire library and tried adding only these 3, by drag and drop as well as the file browser, and I'm certain that they simply do not appear in the library. Is there any way to fix the corrupt part of these files, or have itunes just ignore it and try playing them anyway?

iTunes is very fussy about tags and sometimes will not play files other players accept.
There are vearious things you could try, but backup any files before experimenting on them.
You could try an MP3 repair tool:

MP3 Tag Studio also claims repair capabilities.

  • JMStudio: error when trying to play files from URL

JMStudio fails when I am trying to play files from youtube.
Error message "Could not create player for http://www.youtube.com/v/u0AXoIe9F6M".
Nevertheless it succeeds in playing *.flv files from the disk.
    Whats the problem?

Have you tried copying the said file over to your
desktop and opening it from there?
Yes, the files open when I do that. It has something to do with persmissions I guess on the other system, but I am logging in as the same user/password as when I log in directly. I ran the fix permissions under the disk utility, but still no good. It isn't just related to Excel files either; I am having these problems when I try it with Word too.

  • Final Cut Pro Problem playing and exporting

I am having problem playing and exporting in final cut pro. I made an animation in maya and used batch render to render a folder of images then imported the folder to final cut pro but it doesn’t play properly in the video window or even when I exported to quicktime. Do u know why?
Please give me your response asap.
    Thank you very much!

As the link that Russ posted describes, use quicktime player to open the image sequence and then do a save.  Bringing in an image sequence directly into fcp will cause extreme performance problems in my experience.
Describe the setting (pixel dimensions, color space, etc) of the original files.  One important question is whether there is an alpha channel associated with the files.  You may want to change the codec when you do the save in quicktime player to something more fcp friendly like one of the flavors of prores.
