Problem playing home movies

Hi
I'm running iPhoto 6 on a 10.4.11 white macbook. I've run out of memory (or is it RAM) space on the harddrive so I had to move my photos onto an external harddrive. Now when I try to play movies I made in iPhoto they stay static. I've also tried to drag and open them in QuickTime but they still stay static. The files have become .jpegs (eg. MVI_241.jpeg) which can't be right can it? Can anyone help? These are movies of my daughter learning to crawl, I'll be heartbroken if they've gone for good.

With iPhoto 6 you need to export the movied out of iPhoto with the Format = Original in order to get the full movie file. Just dragging from the iPhoto window gives you the thumbnail jpeg. So try exporting a movie out of iPhoto and see if it will open in QT Player.
Also, make sure the external HD is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) with ownership set to be ignored.

From the iMovie share menu. choose share to iTunes. Choose an appropriate size for your content (no point choosing an HD size if your content isn't). If you have an Apple TV 1, limit your choice to those options that are designated for the Apple TV, if you have an Apple TV 2, you can select the extra options designated for the iPad.

When iTunes finishes playing home movies it closes down before it went back to your home movie library

when i play home movies in itunes when the video is finished itunes closes , before it just went back to home movie libary is there a setting i can se to revert it

Yep, done all that. Repeatly. Don't get any sort of recovery mode message or the phone showing up on iTunes at all. iTunes is most current version, all diagnostics show everything fine, and it works fine with my current phone. Just....nothing.

How to play home movies on TV via Iphone and NAS Drive?

I have a problem playing transferred home movies on a flat screen tv through the “TV Out” feature of my Iphone 4.
Brief History:
I have captured about a TB worth of various home movie videos from VHS tape to my PC hard drive in AVI format using AVS Video Recorder. I used AVS Video Converter to convert the AVI movie files to M4V files, to play these movies on my IPhone. I then copied these M4V video files to a Western Digital “My Book Live” NAS Drive which allows me to view any video using my Iphone, via a WD app, without using Iphone internal memory. This works so far.
The problem is that I thought I could show these videos to family members through their big screen TV at their house, and by hooking my Iphone to their tv’s audio/video inputs, via cables, using TV Out and access the videos from my NAS Drive as I could when using the Iphone alone. However, the home movies do not play on the TV! After a conversation with Apple Techs I was told that using the Iphone’s “TV Out” feature to view video onto a TV, via the Iphone , only works for video that is stored on the internal memory of the Iphone itself, not for accessing 3rd party drives as my NAS.
I was told that there are ways around this like:
-    Syncing certain videos to the Iphone (to save storage space) and viewing them on TV via “TV OUT”
-    Getting an IPad (bigger screen then Iphone) and accessing the videos through the Apple Cloud
-    Using Apple TV and accessing movies via the cloud (which means I would have to bring and hook-up Apple TV to the receiving TV). Not sure about this method.
-    Something about Airplay and mirrioring???
So my question is: Is there any way to access my NAS drive (which has all videos stored) and play those videos on another household’s TV, for many people to comfortably view at once, via my Iphone? Or, is there another method?
Any advice would be appreciated.

the playlist option will show next to where "genre" is only if the playlist contains the appropriate content for the section that you are in.
for example i have a playlist that contains all episodes of a season of King Of Queens. the playlist shows in the "my tv shows" section, but does not in "my movies", as the playlist only contains tv shows.
might be an idea not to mix content in playlists, as you won't be able to play mixed content from a playlist anyway.

HT1657 Problem playing rental movies

I left my rented movie downloading overnight, and tonight when I went to watch it, it said it was ready; but when I tried to play the movie, it required a further 6 hours of downloading. What's going on, and how can I fix it?

I too downloaded the update to Quicktime, but it did not solve my problem. After much pulling out of the hair, I found a fix for myself. It may help someone else. This is what I had to do:
1. Make sure that movies are set to play in a seperate window (found in Edit/Preferences/Playback.
2. Open iTunes (DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PLAY THE MOVIE FROM iTUNES). Instead switch to the mini player mode (found under Advanced).
3. Open your movie folder where the rental is. The movie folder is usually found in My Documents/My Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Movies. Right click on the rented movie and select "Play". It will open in a regular window, but you should be able to click on the control for full screen at the bottom of the play control. I hope this helps someone else... I have tested it three times and it's worked every time.

Can't play home movies

What extra software do I need for I Mac to play my home movies in I Photo, Just upgraded to 10.7.5 in hopes it would work...It didn't!! Help

Choosing the "Movies" section when in iTunes has the following message:
Movies and home videos you add to iTunes appear in your movies library. Your movie purchases in iCloud will also appear whenever you're signed into the iTunes Store.
If you are importing movies from a digital camera, they will be saved to the pictures directory by default. Open iTunes and choose "Add to Library" from the file menu. Locate your movie, and import it.
To play the movie, choose "Movies" from the sidbar (or from the dropdown menu at top left) then select "Home Videos" option in the middle of the top iTunes bar.
To locate where these movies are placed, Go to your home folder, then: /Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Home Videos.
Here you can drop in your movies manually.
Remember, importing movies into iTunes only copies them. The original movies will remain wherever they were previously. So be sure duplicates are not eating up drive space unnessesarily.

Problems viewing home movies on Apple TV

I would like to watch home movies on Apple TV but while my photographs show fine all the movies I have in iPhoto don't show at all. Is there a setting I need to change to make this possible? Thanks, Phil

I realize this is a late response, but it might help.
Try opening the movie file with iTunes. Right click on the video file, and select Open With > iTunes. If iTunes opens it and plays it, then it is ready to go for AppleTV. If it doesn't, then it is not in a format that iTunes or AppleTV support. This can be a huge time saver if you have a lot of clips.
If you have iTunes copy media to the library, then you are going to eat up a sizeable chunk of disk real estate -- as it sounds like you have a lot of movies. You can turn that option off and on in iTunes preferences. Unless you wanted it copied, I would turn that option off before importing a lot of video.
As someone else mentioned, you can use some free utilities to convert the files en masse. After they are converted, you do the same thing. Open With > iTunes. No need to call up iMovie. Quicktime Player has built-in preset for AppleTV in the Export option. There are automation scripts available to do this if you don't want to use Handbrake or other utility.
In my humble opinion, the AppleTV did not have sharing home movies in mind. At least not movies captured on non-apple devices. WDTV can play m2ts and other file formats with no conversion. I have several TB of home movies, so that was my only viable option. Besides, I don't think there is a way to play 1080p home movies through AppleTV. Nor will it play the 5.1 track from home movies, as that gets converted to stereo in the process.

Problem Playing DVD Movies Via Superdrive

Hey all,
This has been a random issue which has just started for me, and I can't figure out what to do. Basically I was conerting DVD movies I had bought to versions I could play on my Video iPod. Everything was going fine, and then all of a sudden, issues began when I popped in a DVD.
Issues:
1) Could hear the Superdrive making noises as if it was having problems reading the DVD
2) As a check, tried watching the DVD via DVD Player, and the movie was barely playing---only playing a few seconds at a time, pausing and then playing **all the while the dvd drive was making the noise**
Checks:
I ejected the DVD. Thinking the DVD was scratched, I put in a DVD that had worked earlier. Unfortunately, this DVD had the same issues!
Restarted the computer **in hopes this would clear something up**, but the issue remained.
Now, I am up to date w/ Software Update. Everything else seems to be fine. Any ideas? I've had this laptop for about 2years. It is a 1.83GHz MacBook Pro with Mac OSX 10.4.10.
Any help/suggestions is appreciated. **I really hope the drive isn't already fried---its only 2years old**

i have this exact problem, and i just saw a co-worker's MBP do this.
i've been told this could be the result of a recent firmware upgrade.
it sounds like an epidemic to me, and i'm hoping apple comes up with a fix. my MBP's superdrive is currently unusable.

Is anyone else having problems playing rental movies to Apple TV

When I play a rented movie to the Apple TV it gets caught in the Loading loop and won't play, all purchased series and movies run OK. This started ever since iTunes upgraded.

Hi I have always made the rental on the computer and used Airplay to watch on the Apple TV, which is what I do for all the TV series I have purchased, e.g. Game of Thrones and others, they have and still work from the iMac to the Apple TV. I rented 2 movies and both will not play, they are recognised on the Apple TV and when I select them they start loading but the windmill just goes and goes and nothing happens. I just downloaded 3 episodes of Outlander and they work fine. It seems that it is only rentals.

Playing home movies on Apple TV

Apple TV seems to have changed. I create my movies in Final Cut Pro and share them in itunes. When I go to play them on my TV from Apple TV, I now get a "buffering bar" across the bottom of the screen. As my movie is approx 30 minutes long, it buffers, then plays a bit of the movie, then stops to buffer again. So to watch my 30 minute movie will take more than an hour as I have to wait for it to buffer all the time.
Is this normal, and is there anything I can do to speed it up?

Check the box under Video to use "Safe mode".
Quit and relaunch QuickTime and try the file again.

HT3209 Problems playing HD movie on itunes

Hi,
I just rented and began downloading "Mansome" from itunes. Unfortunately, I was unable to play it. I downloaded the HD version and it wouldn't play. The version that will play is the standard version. Is there a reason why the HD version won't play?

Hi Jason,
Open iTunes preferences and click on the Playback Tab. Make sure the Crossfade option is turned off and your songs should no longer fade into eachother. It you like the feature you can adjust the length of the fade.

Porting home movies - disappointment

One of the main reasons I bought the Apple TV was to play the growing amount of video I had been generating using a Sony mini-DVD type video camera recording in a wide-screen mode.
Thanks to all the people who posted with hints such as streamclip that I finally got to play some videos.
Some pains along the way:
- Wasted $30 on QUicktime pro conversion. I keep getting an error -108 and conversion dies about 75% of the way through.
- itunes "Convert to ipod" dies with "not enough memory"error. ( No I am not running anything else and I have 1G physical memory).
I finally got streamclip to work ONLY if I convert my videos to mp4 and then run streamclip.
If I only run streamclip, it wants an MP2 decoder for QUicktime.
SOOOO... If I have to watch a movie from my Videocamera. I spend an hour upconverting to mp4. Then I spend more time exporting to something so that it will fit within the max 720x432 format.
So much for the legendary usability for playing home movies. Apple TV is a truly disappointing product.

ITunes organize home movies including mobile format with AppleTV & iPhone?

I use both AppleTV and iPhone to watch and play home movies. I currently organize my home movies under TV Shows and then organize each movie by year. For example - I may have 6 home movies under "Home Movies 2008" and 7 movies under "Home Movies 2009." iTunes organizes the home movies like it would TV Shows so I can see how many movies I have under each heading.
What is the best way to organize movies that are formatted to play on my iPhone? I may have the same name for a movie in 720p and iPhone format. Anyone currently organizing a successful way when utilizing AppleTV and iPhone? Recommendations?
