Problem printing to printer attached to a pc over home network

I have a home network with two computers, a Dell running Win XP and a new iMac running Leopard. I have Fusion installed on the Mac running a virtual PC on WinXP as well, so I effectively have 3 computers. I had an old HP printer attached to the Dell that both the Mac and its virtual PC could see and print to fine over my network. I had to replace the printer and now have a Canon MX700 attached (by USB) to the Dell, and am having trouble with remote printing. I was able to "add" the new printer to both the Mac and its virtual pc, but only the virtual pc is able to print successfully. When I try printing from the Mac applications, using the driver for the MX700 printer found during the add printer setup, I get an error message. I then tried a new setup with a generic (Gutenprint) driver, and the printer was spitting out blank pages. Then I downloaded another driver from Canon's website for OS X 10.5, and it still didn't work. (I am not sure if I was supposed to uninstall the previous drivers first, and if so,I don't know how to do that since I am still new to the Mac environment. I just am assuming that the new drivers take over for the former one.) I assume that the problem is a driver problem and not a network problem since the virtual pc on the Mac works fine and my old HP worked fine with the same network setup. Any help?

Thank you again for sticking with me on this. Frankly, I was very surprised when the Canon did not work even when I carried it downstairs and attached it directly to the Mac by USB. I used the installation disk, which said it installed successfully (after several tries where it kept getting hung up after installing the drivers, and showing 0% completed, requiring me to use force quit to get the setup to stop each time). But as I explained in my prior post, the Mac never found the printer even after the supposed "successful" install.
This is typical when there are too many different versions of the driver residing on the Mac. I will explain my procedure to remove all the Canon stuff at the bottom of this post.
I then downloaded the Mac OS driver from the support page for my printer on Canon's website and ran that driver, but still no recognition. But I am willing to keep trying. I had looked at the PrintFab driver too (which I learned about from one of your other posts), but they are expensive and I probably could buy another printer for the cost of that driver. So I don't think that is an option.
Agree with you re the PrintFab. That is why I think the direct network connection would be best.
You suggest that I try another Gutenprint driver from the Canon list, which I guess I can randomly do, but I noticed that a number of the models listed show the driver as 5.2.3 (the same numbers as the generic one I tried)--does this meand they are all the same? Can I just keep downloading and installing more drivers without removing any?
It is not another version I need you to try. Using the same version, I suggest you try some of the other models that are included with the Gutenprint driver. Ideally, it would be good to know which model of the included Gutenprint drivers uses the same ink tank setup as your MX700. For example, if the MX700 uses BCI8 Blk and a BCI5 Blk and the three 8 series colour (Cyan, Magenta and Yellow), then selecting a model that uses the same setup might work for you. If you check a Canon web site, it would tell you what tanks are used by a certain model that is available within the Canon list.
I am willing to consider the network install of the printer, and that would be a good way to go, but I find Canon's instruction for network installations that came with the printer (which does not appear to consider mixing Macs and Pcs since there are separate instructions for both) a bit confusing. The basic installation of the printer on the network seems easy enough to follow. It is the further instruction for doing something to the "card" for each computer that will be using the printer on the network that I find confusing. I don't know what they are talking about. I certainly don't want to mess up my network connections. Do you know of any better instructions for setting this all up?
The setup is easier than the manual suggests. With the printer connected via USB, you open the Utilities application and select the Network tab. However this does require that you can get the printer to work when connected via USB, so we have to achieve that first.
Again, thank you very much for all your help. (Incidentally, I also discovered I can't use the fax feature of the printer because we have a two-line phone line and when I plug the phone cord into the printer and then out to the phone it eliminates the second line, no ringtone. There is no setting for this on the printer that I can find. But I can live without the fax, just another source of annoyance with this printer).
That would suggest that there is a link from the first phone to the second. Unplugging the phone cable to connect to the fax has broken that loop. You could easily get the phones rewired to suit the fax, but again it costs money so it might not be worth it.
Here is my procedure for repairing faulty installations of the Canon PIXMA drivers.
1. Open System Preferences > Print & Fax. Highlight the Canon printer in the Printer list and click the minus ( - ) button. [You may not have to do this step]
2. Hold Control key and click in the empty Printers list. Click on Reset Printing System.
3. Close Print & Fax
4. Go to Library > Printers > Canon and delete the contents of the BJPrinter folder.
5. Go to Library > Receipts and delete the Canon driver package file, if one exists. The file name will show Canon MX700 xxx.pkg
6. Go to Library > Preferences and delete the Canon folder.
7. Go to HD > Users > Shared > Canon and delete the BJPrinter folder.
8. Empty the Trash
9. Unplug the Canon USB cable and restart the Mac
10. Install the latest version of the Canon driver. Looking at the Canon AU web site it is v6.9.3
11. Once the driver installation is complete, go to Applications > Utilities and open Disk Utility. Run the Repair Disk Permissions option.
12. Reconnect the Canon USB cable. Then open Print & Fax and see if the Canon printer is listed. If it is, try a test print.
13. If the printer is not listed, click the plus ( + ) button.
14. Select the Default view and select the Canon printer connected via the USB port. The Print Using menu should automatically change to Canon IJ Printer.
15. Click Add to add the printer.

  • Problems printing from PC to MAC on wireless network

I've just spent 3 hours trying to get my 3 Vista PCs to print to the printer that is connected to my iMAC.
The iMAC is running Snow Leopard. The printer is a HP Deskjet F300 series and is connected to the iMAC via USB. The MAC and the printer work fine this way. The iMAC is connected to my wireless router for my home network.
The Vista PCs have BONJOUR for Windows installed. They all see the Deskjet printer via the iMAC (I have allowed printer and file sharing), and I have set this printer as the default printer. However, when I attempt to print on any of the PCs, nothing happens on the iMAC or Deskjet printer. So obviously the print info is not being received on the iMAC.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I was able to get my HP DeskJet printer running using Windows XP in Parallels, by doing the following:
Select 'Add a new printer' in Windows
Select 'Local Printer' in the dialog box (auto detect and install should be off), click next.
Choose 'Create a new port' and "Standard TCP/IP Port'. Click next.
For the printer IP address, enter the address of the base station ie. 10.0.1.1. The port name will be filled automatically. Click next.
For the device type, choose 'Hewlet Packard Jet Direct', then click Finish.
Choose your printer from the list and follow the rest of the prompts to install and configure the driver.

  • Can't print to my HP D2460 over the network anymore, after upgrade to SL.

    Hi,
I upgraded to Snow Leopard today. Now I can't print to my HP D2460 Deskjet printer anymore. The printer is shared from my Windows XP system via SMB. When I try to print I see the following message in the print queue on the Windows XP system: "Remote Downlevel Document - Error printing".
I have updated the print drivers at both ends and still can't get it to work.
If I connect the printer to a USB port on my MacBook Pro, it prints fine. It's only the network/SMB printing that seems to be broken.
Has anyone else had this problem? How can I fix it?
    Cheers.

  • Unable to print to officejet Pro 8000 on home network from other computers on network

Trying to set up the printer to print on the home network.  Running Win XP on a mainframe with the printer connected to it.  I can find the printer via a search, but when I install it and try to print to it, nothing happens.  Tried installing the 64-bit version of the driver on the laptop, which is running Win7 64-bit.  But it will not locate the printer.  Used to run Win7 32-bit and it worked, now that seems to be out of sync also.  Print sharing set up on both computers.

Hello denvershadow1, You may want to take a look at this  Link, and see if there is any useful information to setup your printer for network use.
You would need to install the software/drivers for the printer on all the systems that need to use the network printer.
Since you mentioned some of your systems have Windows7 and also Windows XP,  Here  is the link where you can locate the needed drivers for the different Windows operating systems.

  • Xerox Phase 6280DN printing does not work anymore over wifi network help

    Hello
I am having recurrent printing problems within a WIFI home office network. After power-cuts (which occur frequently here) I can not print anymore from any computer in the WIFI network on a Xerox Phaser 6280 DN.
The printer is seen in the printer list but after clicking print in the printer queue it says "looking for printer" and /or "printing". When I connect the printer directly to a Macbook Pro it will print. Today I have downloaded the latest version of the printer driver of beginning this year from the Xerox support site. However now I can not add the printer to the printer list because it does not show up as an option! I restarted the laptop but this does not help. I have also restarted the airport express and airport base station but no luck. I did so by unplugging and replugging.
The Phaser is connected to an Airport express which talks to an Airport base-station. OSX is 10.6.3. Thanks for any help it is driving me mad.

  • HP Photosmart 5510d can't be printed to by 2 laptops over wireless network

    Computer 1 - Vista 32 Pro
    Computer 2 - Win 7 64 Premium
Both have current drivers. Both  can find the printer. Both can cancel print queue jobs.
Both get the "The printer is not connected" or "printer is not online" error.
I've checked the IP addy: 192.168.1.101
There is a desktop system that is able to print to the printer - it is located directly next to the printer, but prints wirelessly. I moved one of the systems into the same room as the printer; no dice. We've even had the "next door" computer wake up - and the printer still doesn't do diddly in regards to the laptop.
At least one system is able to access the Printer Assistant - and see what current ink levels are, which match what the printer self-page spits out. (I haven't tested it w/ the other laptop).
    Help?

Set a static IP in the printer outside the DHCP range of your router.  Use a fixed channel like 1,6 or 11, never 'auto'.  Now try.

  • Can't print from Windows PC to printer on I-Mac USB over wireless network

I am a brand new Mac user after years of Windows frustration.
Canon i9100 connected to I-Mac via USB. Prints OK from I-Mac. Print share enabled. Windows share enabled.
I-Mac on wireless LAN with static IP addresses for all devices.
Dell Windows XP on same wireless LAN.
    Can ping I-Mac OK.
Added printer on Dell through Windows XP using I-Mac static IP address and I-Mac printer name - installed OK, but will not print.
After hours on Apple Support, found and downloaded Bonjour for Windows and installed on Dell. Ran Bonjour on Dell, installed printer OK, but still won't print from Dell.
Very frustrating and I haven't started on my VPN issues yet - thought Apple would be far simpler.

On Windows, after either method of setup, change the driver (on PC) to Apple Color LaserWriter. Apple print queues expect postscript as input.
If this is unsatisfactory, you can create a RAW queue on the Mac (only for sharing the printer, because it will have no driver associated):

  • Problem setting up connection with 2wire USB adapter (BT Home Network 1200)

I keep on running into a brick wall setting up my internet connection on my newly purchased MacBook (I have never used a mac before, having used a PC for years). I am trying to set up my macbook as an additional computer on my BT Home Network 1200, and I have installed the drivers given on the 2wire CD, but even when I plug in the USB adapter, the Macbook does not seem to recognise it. The adapter looks something like this:
Anyway, the instructions given in the BT Home Network PDF manual seem to suggest that it is relatively straightforward, and that it is simply a matter of clicking the apple menu, selecting "control panels", selecting "TCP/IP", and then in the "connect via" box, clicking on the pulldown menu and selecting 2Wire PC Port. However, I am using 10.4.9 and it seems to me that this guide must have been written for an outdated version of Mac OS X because none of these instructions seem to make sense or work in the context of my macbook. At the moment, it seems like I won't be able to get my macbook online. Could someone please help explain to me how to get around this?

Any reference to 'Control Panels' will, indeed, be for Mac OS 9.x, the last version of which (9.2) was released in 2001.
My advice would be to return it to BT and ask them for an ethernet-based modem, not a USB one.
USB DSL modems have varying levels of support in Mac OS X ranging from poor to none. The fact that 2Wire doesn't include Mac OS X instructions implies that this model is at the lower end of that scale.
By comparison, an ethernet-based modem will connect to your Mac via ethernet, have the option of sharing the connection with multiple machines, typically be faster, and has an almost 100% compatibility rate.

  • Setting up a Printer over Wirless Network

I have a MacBook Pro and a Old G4 Mirror Door connected to a Linksys Wirless Router in my home. I only have one phone jack in my house and its in the kitchen.:( So I put an Airport card in the G4 so I could have my computer in my office. I have a hp Deskjet 3650 connected directly to the G4 via USB. What I'm wondering is.. is there a way that I can print to this printer from my MacBook Pro over the network? Or does the printer have to be connected directly to the wirless router?
    Hope someone can help.

You certainly can set up a printer this way. Go to the Print & Fax preference pane in the System Preferences. Click on the Sharing tab, enable "Share these printers with other computers", and make sure that the check box next to your printer is checked.

  • Trying to share a printer attached to a PPC Mac Mini

    Hi all.
I'm reinsterting an old Mac Mini running OS X 10.5.8 as a headless print server. I can interact with it via other computers to share the screen, so my network protocol with the computer is sound. My problem is, I can't seem to print to any printer attached to this computer--this is obviously a problem, as that's the whole reason I've revived this device.
Sharing setup for all computers is complete and the client computers don't seem to have any trouble seeing the printer. But when I print to it, the job is sent VERY quickly (suspiciously so) from my clients (a Mac Mini Intel in the living room and a MacBook), and the PPC mini shows no indication a print job was ever delivered.
Any brilliant ideas? I'm sure it's something really basic I'm not remembering or thinking about, and I'm sure someone has already asked this question; feel free to direct me to that solution, as my searching efforts didn't produce anything that I felt was helpful--but I've been wrong before.
    Thanks!

OK then, please post a brand new question in the OS X 10.5.8 "Leopard" forum:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.5_leopard
I no longer have a Leopard system to test and I used my one brilliant idea for today.
A new question should solicit more interest. Hopefully one of the old guard can think of something. Reference this thread so they can read what you did so far: Trying to share a printer attached to a PPC Mac Mini
Edit: Before you go, can you print to this printer while directly attached to the other computers too? Make sure it's not a simple driver problem. Good luck!

  • Recognizing a printer attached to an Airport Extreme Base Station

I have attached a printer to the usb port of my airport extreme base station. The printer is recognized by two of my MacBook Pros running Mac OS X version 10.4.11. However, it is not recognized by my latest MacBook Pro running 10.5.2. Is this a problem with the new system, or is there another reason? I have, of course, made sure that the printer drivers are installed, and the printer attached to the Airport works with the new MacBook Pro when connected directly through a usb port on the laptop. Any help will be gratefully received!!

  • Problems Printing: Airport Express connected HP Laserjet M1319f

    Hello,
I have an Airport Express connected via ethernet to my network.  Attached to it is a HP LaserJet M1319f MFP printer, via USB.  I can get my iMacs and my Windows systems to print to the printer without a problem.
I would like to be able to print logs to it from my OS X Server (10.6.7), which is located quite a distance from the printer.  So far, I've had absolutely no luck configuring the Airport-attached printer and getting it to work.  From what I've been able to figure out, OS X Server expects any remote printer that it attaches to, to be attached via IPP, TCP/IP, or via Windows.  It doesn't seem to want to discover and use the printer via Bonjour.
Any ideas on how I can make this work?  Am I missing something obvious?
    Thanks!
    Sven

See if these guides help, it sounds like a driver issue. Does the printer work correctly when directly connected to the PC?
Ensure that the Macs are not sharing the printer, as this is not needed and the PC should be able to find the printer on the AX.

recently i connected my girl's Vaio laptop running Windows 7 and it works fine for connecting to the internet but i CANNOT for the life of me figure out how to get the network printing working. we installed the latest drivers for the canon on her PC and downloaded and installed Bonjour for WIndows version 2.02 (link here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL999) The printer is even "seen" on her PC, shows up with a green arrow and the base station is identified, but everytime we try and print we end up with a "error printing document" message after a minute or so.
i have gone into the prefs and we have enabled the UDP port "5353" just in case her MacAffee or the firewall was the issue. this has not worked either. i have tried the solution proposed by a user on this link (http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/177086-fixed-problems-wireless-printi ng-over-airport-extreme.html) and that has not worked either.

  • Quality problem printing in Windows 8.1 with CP1215

Recently purchased new laptop with Windows 8.1 Pro.  I have had my printer for years, CP1215, via USB, without having any problems printing to it with Windows 7 Pro. I first noticed that the quality of print I receive out of my printer on the new laptop is darker.  The darkness comes from black lines going diagonally across the page.  I would estimate at approximately a 2 degree angle.  I would also estimate that the lines appear every 4th pixel row.  I have attached 2 images, printed on 2 different printers.  The one on the top is the one off of my CP1215, the one on the bottom is a color copier in my office.  I have zoomed in incredibly on the prints to show the lines.  Just never had problems with this printer in pre Windows 8.1 days.  Tried installing ljcP1215-HB-pnp-win64-en.  Tried uninstalling printer, rebooting, then installing, still same problem.  I also have another problem with printing, but suspect it is more of a Microsoft problem.  My laptop thinks a network printer goes offline, stopping and restarting the print spooler service seems to fix that.  I had to make a .bat file on my desktop to do it, it happens at least 2 times in an 8 hr work day.
