Problem PSU. What's the correct course of action?

Hi all. I have an iMac G5 (ambient sensor) with serial number W85270XXXXX. I'm fairly sure I have a PSU problem as the machine will shut down without warning (mostly after it's been inactive for a while, but sometimes during boot).
Grep'ing through the system.log reveals lots of:
AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = -122
I purchased the machine in Sept '05, and don't have AppleCare. Am I out of luck here? What is the proper course of action to resolve this (as cheaply as possible -- I'm perfectly content replacing the PSU myself if that's an option)?
Thanks for any help.

Yep, when my power supply failed, I got those, too. And, like yours, it often happened when it was idle, though it happened a couple of times when I was right there. When I first took it into the Apple Store, they were hesitant to do anything about it, since they couldn't get it to shut down "on command". It was only after I discovered that if I ran the computer for a while and got it good and warmed up (iTunes with the visualizer is a good way), then shut the computer down, it wouldn't restart until it had cooled down. When I could show them that, they replaced the logic board and PSU.
If you get a clean shut down and startup, you'll see this in the log:
<pre class="command">AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = 1</pre>A "warm" reboot shows this:
<pre class="command">AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = 2</pre>Unfortunately, those codes aren't documented. Even the techs at the Apple Store didn't have them.

  • My Mac is dying - what's the best course of action?

    My computer has been running poorly for months. Today I tried to run Disk Utility and I was informed my hard drive was failing and DU couldn't be run.
    Technically, I can't really afford any action right now but clearly I need to do something. In your opinion, is it better to scour Craigslist for another Mac, or bring it to a repair shop and see what can be done? I would need to replace the hard drive of course, but I would also need to replace the CD Rom reader because that stopped working awhile back.
    I have a 2006 Intel iMac running 10.4.8.

    Hi,
    The first thing you should do, if you haven' already... is make a Clone Backup to preserve all your date...

  • 10.6.8 software update won't reboot. It replaces the Apple logo with a circle with a diagonal line though it. What's the best course of action from here?

    I used software update last night and my iMac didn't restart afterwards. I spun the little "dashed" wheel for a bit and then replaced the Apple Logo with a slashed circle symbol. I"ve tried several fixes without success and would like to know what my best approach might be.
    I've tried to boot into single user mode but that failed the same as above. I've tried disk verify and repair permissions using Disk Utility, again without success in fixing the problem.

    com.apple.iokiast.IOUSBMassStorageClass
    is a Apple kext file and likely necessary.
    What you can do is backup your Users folders to another external drive (not TimeMachine) first so you have your files outside of TM. Disconnect this drive for safety reasons.
    Then hold c and boot off the OS X 10.6 installer disk and simply reinstall OS X on top of the installed version, then use the 10.6.8 Combo Update here
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
    That should replace the troubled kext file with a fresh version.
    This shouldn't bother your files or third party programs unless they have kext files or other "hooks" into OS X, if these programs fail, then just reinstall them from fresh sources and/or update to reinstall their missing parts.
    Consider cloning your boot drive to a external HFS+ journaled formatted drive with Carbon Copy Cloner.

  • Error message: "Java Script turned off, Enable Java Script" How to do this? I have gone into "Tools--then Options--Then checked Java Script--Then the "OK/Save" Button but this has not helped. What is the right course of action?

    Java Script is disabled on my HP laptop. I have done the obvious things. It still will not enable Java Script. What do I try next?

    Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
    If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

    Hello,
    Just to add to PieterV's excellent reply, these days, pretty much all anti-malware programs resort to using some sort of technology hosted in the cloud, whether its looking up sites to see if they are malicious before allowing a connection, checking the "reputation" of downloaded software by its age and prevalance, and so forth.
    Symantec had a great presentation at VB2009 called "Using the wisdom of crowds toadress the malware long tail" which explains hows a reputation system works, with a follow-up on its effectiveness presented at VB2010.  This year at VB2011, there was a very interesting presentation from Trend Micro called "File-fraction reputation based on digest of high granularity" that showed how a cloud-based system could be used to used to detect recurring segments of malicious code to detect newer malware.
    That said, I think it's important to use a mixture of techniques for detection of malicious code, both online and offline.  As PCBruiser noted, if your Internet connection is unavailable or, even worse, compromised, then you cannot rely on a service based solely on having a "known good clean and working" Internet connection.

  • What are the correct domain settings @ Go Daddy?

    I will set up a Mac Mini Lion Server using server assistant.  I bought a domain name from Go Daddy. What are the correct domain (DNS, host) settings @ Go Daddy - need step by step guide; thanks in advance.

    I do not fully understand how the PTR pointer works
    PTRs map IP addresses back to hostnames - also known as 'reverse DNS'.
    The way it works is that when you (or any client) looks up an IP address they first query the root servers that maintain a map of the main IP address allocations. You then query the server that's authoritative for the IP address in question. That server may respond, or may further delegate responsibility to another server.
    As an illustration, imagine a company - MegaISP - who's been allocated a large block of IP addresses - say 1.0.0.0 through 1.255.255.255. As an ISP they provide access service in all 50 states so they may further subdivide their network into chunks and delegate control of each chunk to a different server, e.g. 1.1.0.0 - 1.1.255.255 -> CA, 1.2.0.0 - 1.2.255.255 -> NY, etc.
    Now you, as a customer of MegaISP, connect to their server and are allocated a dynamic address from the 1.2.0.0 - 1.2.255.255 subnet - let's say 1.2.3.4
    When you perform a reverse lookup on 1.2.3.4 your query first goes to the root servers which say something like 'hey, those IPs are owned by MegaISP's DNS servers, so go ask them'. You then query MegaISP's main servers which then say 'hey, that IP is somewhere in the New York subnet, so go query the New York DNS server. Your query then goes to MegaISP's New York server that replies something like 'host-1-2-3-4.ny.megaisp.net' and that' your reverse lookup.
    (of course, this is greatly simplified, and the whole process takes a fraction of a second, but hopefully you get the idea).
    The problem you now have is that MegaISP have no idea what services you're running on your connection, so they just return a generic response (e.g. host-1-2-3-4.ny.megaisp.net) and not something that relates to your domain (e.g. www.yourdomain.net). Nobody knows to ask your DNS server what hostname your IP address should map to.
    In order for that last step, MegaISP either have to change their DNS servers to map your IP address to your domain name rather than the generic hostname, or they have to further delegate your IP address's lookup to your own server (i.e. add another link in the chain - like 'hey, that IP address is delegated to yourdomain.net, so go ask their server').
    Most ISPs are happy to either delegate or have a custom entry for your domain, but not on dynamic or residential-grade connections - it's not worth the time and effort to keep it up to date as your IP address changes, which is why it's typically only something that comes with business-grade services.
    and what limitations this will lead to
    Any service that relies on valid reverse DNS is doomed to fail. For the most part, http doesn't matter/care, but don't expect to run a mail server or certain other services.

  • What is the correct procedure for upgrading to aperture 3.4

    I am working in South Sudan and am shortly going to be in a place where I can download all the updates. The last time I did an update was around 2 weeks ago.
    I presume that there will be updates for Mountain Lion, iPhoto and Aperture, plus a whole pile of iOS updates. From the support questions I see that there is a number of people having problems.
    I presume that the first thing to do will be to rebuild the library of aperture.
    What is the correct procedure after that?

    If I do an upgrade through AppStore, and find it does not work, do I uninstall first by removing to trash? What do you mean by revert to an earlier version, and which previous version of Aperture should I use.
    Neville,
    So you did buy Aperture from the AppStore?
    Then move the Aperture application to the Trash, but do not empty it, just in case
    Sign into the AppStore and reinstall. In this case you do not need to revert to an earlier version. If the AppStore installer does not find an Aperture in your Applications folder, it will have to make a full install, and no incompatible frameworks should remain, as is the problem with the partial upgrades right now.
    Yes, I have a bootable clone,
    And have you checked, if you really can boot from your clone? Just being very cautious.
    Do you use facebook? Some posters are having problems, even after reinstalling, if the want to publish to Facebook. Post back, if you encounter that problem.
    Good Luck

  • What is the correct procedure to connect and collect events from IPS through SDEE

    What is the correct procedure to connect and collect events from IPS through SDEE?
    We are a 3rd party application, that needs to collect and analyze the IPS events for a client.
    Currently the approach we are following is
    1) get a SubscriptionId using the URL below
    https://IP_Of_IPS/cgi-bin/sdee-server?action=open&events=evIdsAlert&force=yes
    This gets us a subscriptionId which is used in step 2
    2) Collect events from the url below
    https://IP_Of_IPS/cgi-bin/sdee-server?confirm=yes&action=get&subscriptionId=sub-sample&startTime=1362699903575432000
    a few more notes here are
    - starttime is current time in nanoseconds
    the peculiar problem here is that, even though we specify todays date, SDEE returns us the events from mid Feb (today is march 7)
    we did try a few combinations, but are out of ideas.
    any help or direction would be appreciated

    This is more an application issue than an IPS issue.
    Have you compared your app against other apps [IME]?

  • What is the correct way to destory a Thread?

    Just wondering what is the correct way to destroy a thread? I am currently using the stop() method, but i noticed that it has been depreciated (along with other methods used to destroy a thread) when i looked at the thread documentation. Since this is so, then how can one correctly destroy a thread? Thanks in advance for the help.

    There is an awful lot of bad advice in this thread about what null does. Please in future check on your own with working code before offering up misguided and very wrong advice. Particularly when your advice contradicts that previously given.
    Please compile and run the following
    public class Test implements Runnable{
      public static void main(String args[])throws Exception{
        Test test = new Test();
        Thread t= new Thread(test);
        t.start();
        // have delay wait a few seconds to demonstrate
        Thread.sleep(3000);
        System.out.println("Setting reference to thread to null");
        t = null; // what does this do?
        // jack all
        System.out.println("Exiting main");
      public void run(){
        while(true){
          System.out.println("Hello from test thread!");
          try{ Thread.sleep(750); }catch(InterruptedException iDontCareAboutThis){}
    }This will output the following
    C:\>java Test
    Hello from test thread!
    Hello from test thread!
    Hello from test thread!
    Hello from test thread!
    Setting reference to thread to null
    Exiting main
    Hello from test thread!
    Hello from test thread!
    Hello from test thread!
    Hello from test thread!
    Hello from test thread!
    Hello from test thread!And continues on endlessly. Setting the reference to null is NOT an answer to this problem.

    i have recently purchased the highest storage but was unable to backup my phone via icloud, the button on my iphone to backup on icloud is grey out, anyone knows how to resolve the problem?  What's the point of purchasing the biggest storage?

    First check that your device is correctly connected to the wifi/internet (settings > wifi)
    If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.
    If this doesn't help, try turning off some items for back up in a pattern to try to establish if your problem is being caused by specific data on your device.
    Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.
