Problem quitting itunes

I recently downloaded some songs from the cloud to my computer. I paused the downloads because I had to go somewhere, and when I resumed, it looked like it had locked up (looked kinda glitchy), so I thought if I hit "pause all", disconnected the internet, and shut down the computer for a while, it might fix the issue. I tried closing Itunes, but it said it was downloading songs (even after I'd turned off my internet connection), so it wouldn't let me close the application, and therefore, wouldn't let me completely power down my computer.
I even let the computer run out of power, and hoped that when I started charging it again and turned it on, it would let me start from the beginning and it would all be the usual Mac sunshine-rainbows and machine-gun unicorns.
No dice.
Anyone else have this issue?
Thanks.

Also I should mention, it says the app is open, but the itunes app will not materialize on screen, unless i use the play-shortcut key and start cycling songs, and then i only get the little tag in the upper-right corner saying the title and artist of the song. it wont let me pick what song, only tunes on the recently downloaded list.

  • Problems quitting iTunes

When I try to quit iTunes (command+Q), the iTunes-logo automatically starts to jump in my dock, iTunes starts and opens an iTunes-window.
I have no discs in my computer, no iPods or iPhones connected.
    What's wrong?

    Problem solved after rebooting.

  • Trouble quitting & Locked file problems in iTunes

This is weird, but it's the 2nd time it's happened in two days. I'm using the latest iTunes on OS X Tiger.
I have iTunes playing music in the background while I'm working on other programs (like Word). Suddenly, I discover that I can't pull iTunes back up; click on the icon in the Dock does nothing. Cmd-Tab shows iTunes, but nothing comes up if I select it.
So, I use Activity Monitor to force quit iTunes. It disappears from that list, but it's still in the cmd-opt-esc list. So I force quit it there, too, and it apparently disappears (but if I close the window and do another cmd-opt-esc, iTunes is really still there). Finally, I log off and log back in. Now, when I try to run iTunes, I get the message "The iTunes Music Library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."
It isn't until I completely restart the machine that I can get back into iTunes.

Make sure iTunes is not running. Click your iTunes folder once (in ~/users/your user name/Music)
Press command and i keys or click File > Get Info.
At the bottom of the Get Info panel you will see "Ownership & Permissions". Click the triangle to reveal further options, if it is not already showing.
Click on the lock. You may be asked for an administrator password at this point.
Change, or make sure the settings are:
    You Can: Read & Write
You may have to click the triangle marked "Details" to see and modify the following options.
    Owner: your user name
    Access: Read & Write
    Group: your user name
    Access: Read only
    Others: Read only
Click the "Apply to enclosed items" button. Click OK in the alert box to confirm.
This last action may take a moment to complete. Be patient.

  • Problems with quitting iTunes...

    Hi!
Whenever I quit iTunes or shut down the computer with a few apps running (including iTunes) iTunes refuses to shut down and restarts itself. After maybe six to seven attempts it shuts down properly, but this is so frustrating.
    What could be wrong?

Check Dashboard to see if you have any iTunes-related widgets running. If so, close them and see if that makes a difference.

  • Is anybody else having problems with itunes (10.6.3.25) and ipod touch (5.1.1)?

Lately I've been having a ton of problems with iTunes and my iPod Touch (4th generation). Lots of error messages such as can't connect to itunes store, incompatible application, ipod detected but not identifiable, invalid response received from device, unknown errors [mostly (0xE8000001)], problem with audio configuration, etc. I've done everything I could think of. Uninstalling iTunes (with all the components) then reinstalling with the newest version (10.6.3.25), running diagnostics and such. If it does appear (about 2% of the time) then iTunes freezes and/or it won't sync. I also try to change some info (song title, artist, artwork, etc)(when it DOES come up) and it shows up on itunes but not on my ipod. My ipod appears on my computer but not in iTunes under devices like its supposed to. I've been to all the support threads I can possibly find and NOTHING has helped. I also had the latest version for the ipod touch (5.1.1). And I've never had any issues with iTunes or my iPod touch before. I know I should probably try restoring my ipod but I absolutely do not want to do that unless I have to because i have a lot of music, apps, movies, etc I'm not able to back up. Also, I'm using a Windows 7 computer. Please Please help if you can, I am frustrated because I can't do anything.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If you've already tried a complete uninstall and reinstall try opening iTunes in safe mode (hold down CTRL+SHIFT as you start iTunes) then going to Edit > Preferences > Store and turning off Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. You may find iTunes will now start normally.

  • Problems with iTunes

I've recently started having a few problems with iTunes, and was wondering if anyone could offer advice on how to go about fixing them.
First of all, iTunes opens up (it takes quite a long time) and then everything goes slow. It keeps automatically updating the podcasts, of I press Ctrl + Alt + Delete, it says (under CPU) that iTunes is using (anywhere between)65 - 99% of the cpu. So if i stop it from updating the podcasts, the CPU usage goes down. Is there any way of resolving this?
Also, (whether CPU usage for iTunes in 99% or 0%) all my music is jumpy. It plays about a second, jumps, plays abother second, jumps... nothing willlay properly. This has only started happerning in the past few days.
I'm not sure if this came about after upgrading (i don't remeber if i upgraded iTunes recently or not).
One final problem that I've had for ages. (I think this might be more something wrong with my computer / windows) but iTunes wont always open straight away, If i double click on it, it will load for a few seconds then nothing will happern. So i forget about it, and start doing something else / leave the computer, then about 1/2 an hour later iTunes pops open. As I've said, I don't think that this is caused by iTunes, because if I restart my pc, it will (normally) open straight away.
    I am using iTunes 6.0.4.2
    Thanks for any help

I do not mean to be rude but considering the problem, What is your computers RAM Memory capacity if you are close to the maximum this could be part of your problem, also do you do disc clean up and defrag. regularly? there is also another facility that might help and that is a registry cleaner (do not start thinking massive outlay at this stage. The disc clean up and defrag should be part of your computers tools) The registry cleaner is available until later this year as a free item (Beta) from Microsoft. If you are fully clear there are all your 'cookies' clean out every day preferably 2-3 times per day they do mount up and take up disc space.

  • Problems accessing iTunes media folder on external drive via Mac

I have recently got a Mac Book Pro and assumed it would be easy to access my iTunes library - which I store on a Buffalo external drive and normally access via my Asus vivobook laptop running windows 8 - by simplying plugging the external drive into the Mac Book Pro, opening iTunes while pressing on the Option key (as I understand it is called) and then selecting the iTunes library .itl file when invited to choose a library. However, when I do this, I get a message saying that "the .tl file is locked, on a locked disc or I do not have write permission for this file".
If I click on the .itl file in the external drive via my Mac, it takes me straight into iTunes but, of course, without any of the content of my iTunes media folder.
I can access the media on the external drive when it is plugged into my Mac and am not aware of ever having introduced any restrictions on the library .itl file (I normally switch the external hard drive between my Dell desktop and my Asus laptop).
I have restarted my Mac Book Pro and quite iTunes etc. I also have the media folder correctly identified on the external hard drive in my iTunes preferences, Advanced Settings.
I would be most grateful for any ideas as to what could be the problem here.
    Thank you (in anticipation).
    Best,
    Michael

Get info on the drive.  Check the format.  If it says NTFS it is a format that Macs cannot write to, only read, unless you install special software.  It is a common issue with using Windows drives on Macs.  "Locked" may mean iTunes cannot open it for full use since it needs to write to the library file as well as read it.
Your solution may be to reformat the drive to something a Mac can use fully too, such as FAT (beware file size limits with large video files). or trying to work with a NTFS driver for Mac.

  • Problem launching iTunes 10.0... on Vista 64 bit machine

I have been trying for 2 days to launch Itunes 10; have totally uninstalled all components in the order suggested, i.e itunes, quicktime, applesoftware update, applemobile device support, bonjour, and apple application support.I checked all folders to make sure they were really gone.
I have disabled all anti-spy software and turned off security firewall when I reinstalled iTunes again; I also created a new user account on my system and tried to launch itunes from it; still did not work.
I was able to install and launch iTunes 10 on another system I have (Dell with XP) and it will work there, but that doesn't help because my music library is on the Acer (and of course my Ipod). Help ! I'm very frustrated

    no problem!
I think we might be able to make some further progress with this one if you're still game, joan.
'iTunes has been set to run in compatibility mode for an older version of windows. turn off compatibility mode before opening itunes'
Quit iTunes again. Now track down the compatibility mode tab for your iTunes, as per:
[iTunes for Windows: How to turn off Compatibility Mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1489]
... but when you get to step 8, deselect any checkbox that is currently selected. (Not just the compatibility mode checkbox.)
Try opening iTunes again ... does it launch without the compatibility mode error this time?

  • Have to force quit iTunes 98% of the time

It did not improve with iTunes 8.
Every time i go to the iTunes store (purchase or not) when I want to quit iTunes I get the beach ball and the fan kicks on until I force quit. Much of the time just listing to music the same thing occurs.
    Tips?

I'm also having a similar problem with iTunes 8.0.1 on Leopard 10.5.5
It consistently freezes when I'm using the iTunes Store. I'm usually able to browse the store and if I find what I'm looking for and make the purchase I can quit iTunes normally, if I leave the store before it freezes. If I wait for iTunes to freeze I'm unable to force quit, access the terminal, taskbar or anything else. I have to force the power off and reboot in order to use the computer again once I experience the freeze.
I had the good fortune to have two identical iMacs and have the problem on both. I've done a clean install on both computers and continue to have the problem on both after clean installs. The problem appeared shortly after the release of iTunes 8.0 on the first computer. I almost miss my Windows Vista Ultimate computer (almost).

  • After force quitting iTunes, now my phone is "in use" by another user

OK, here's what just happened to me tonight. I had the "beach ball of death" in iTunes, so I used a force quit. Now when I plug in my week old iPhone 4, I'm getting the message that this phone is already in use by another user on this computer. Huh?!? For one thing, I am the ONLY user although I do have a "guest" account, but I'm logged in on my regular account.
I've tried restarting iTunes, same message. Every time I plug in the phone it's doing it now. So, how am I supposed to sync my phone now?
Has anyone else had this problem after force quitting iTunes? Any ideas?

Nope, tried that, didn't work. 3 complete reboots didn't worked either. However, on the 4th complete computer reboot, it worked!! I don't know why, but I'm happy that I can sync again.
I guess it just reinforces the old, "if at first you don't succeed...."

  • Two problems with iTunes (permissions issue?)

    Hello,
I have two problems with iTunes. I am not sure if they are related that's why I post them both.
    1) iTunes doesn't delete apps after updating them anymore. This is happening since the (two?) last versions of iTunes and is the same with 10.5. The reason seems to be the permissions of the apps. Nearly all have "everyone = custom". Therefore I have to enter my admin password when I try to delete them manually. And iTunes itself cannot delete them on its own, of course. Why is this happening? Why is iTunes assigning such permissions to downloaded apps?
    2) I can't login to my account from within iTunes anymore. That is also happening since quite a while. I am logged in (my ID is shown in the top right of the store) but cannot access my account details. iTunes asks for my password but after entering it the login mask appears again. It's not the password itself, it is correct.
    Any suggestions?

  • Multiple Problems with itunes...PLEASE HELP

i'm crossing posting this to try and get as much help as possible, so i'm sorry if you see this in a bunch of places.....
i posted awhile back and didnt get much help and i'm still having problems with itunes
first of all when i open itunes it attempts to do the gapless playback stuff....if i let it do it....it gets half way through and freezes....but if i stop it before it freezes, i am able to play music BUT not import any songs from cd, ipod, or downloading software....
so, i deleted the library and imported "iTunes Music Library.xml"....then i went into my itunes folder and started dropping the songs into itunes...and i got about 3/4s of my music (about 25 gigs) and it starts to freezes when looking for album covers....if i force quit and reopen the song will be in there...just not the album work....which is fine....but if i have to force quit every time i import a song, its going to get rediculous....i have tried deleting the library and importing the "iTunes Music Library.xml" file about 6 times now, with the same results.....
ALSO...when i connect my ipod to my computer (i have 80 gig 5G) it will freeze while syncing....
i honestly have NO idea what to do....any suggestions would be welcomed...thanks....

    modulatetome,
See if these articles help to narrow down the issue:
First: How to recreate your iTunes Library

    - You stated you had " deleted the library and imported "iTunes Music Library.xml", so verify steps in article are what you've done, or try them again.
Second: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304447
    - You can use this to open iTunes with an empty Library, import one CD and test how iTunes works.

  • Problems with iTunes Match since 5.1 iPhone update?

Since the most recent iPhone update I've had nothing but problems with my iPhone 4's music player, which I presume are being caused by iTunes Match.  The service really was not ready for primetime and has been mostly a headache, but the 5.1 update made it exponentially worse.
I've had the following problems:  iTunes on iPhone 4 frequently will not play the songs I select.  The track remains at 0:00 and I often have to force quit iTunes to play anything else.  The phone frequently skips songs at random and goes on to the next track or another track.  Selected songs play as other songs off an album or playlist and do not match up with their cover art.  The phone rarely plays more than two songs in a row without encountering some problem.
I've tried restoring the phone, turning iTunes match off and on, and completely disabiling it.  When I did that, the phone wouldn't play ANYTHING!
Do you guys have any solutions?  I've tried to go to genius bar but there's always a huge line even with appointments and I doubt they'll be helpful.
    Thanks!

I am having the exact same problems.  Most songs not playing, some skipping to the next song, song indexing out of order.  Match is becoming a miserable experience..

  • Problems with iTunes U

I have just started using iTunes U. Yesterday I started downloading files for a course. There were problems so I suspended subscribing and quit iTunes.
Today I launched iTunes and the downloads continued. I noticed that the listing included a lot of duplicates. I suspended all downloads and went to my my iTunes Library and looked at the iTunes U folder. There seem to be two sets of files. One set is numbered 1-01 Lesson 1, 1-02 Title Lesson 2, the other set is Title Lesson 1, Title Lesson 2 with identical file sizes.
The listing in iTunes does not reflect the 1-01 numbers and displays only the Lesson Titles, leading one to sort by release date to get the lessons in what I assume would be a logical order.
The duplicate files command is not available with iTunes U.
I went to the list and selected some of the duplicates and deleted them from the list but then decided to use the finder vice iTunes to delete them. I quit iTunes and deleted all of the unnumbered files.
When I relaunched iTunes, they were still there. I selected the first in the series and used Command-I to Get Info. I then clicked on Next. If one was missing, iTunes wanted to know if i wanted to locate it, my response was No. As I went through the list that way, those that were missing were flagged with a explanation point in iTunes. I Command selected all of the so flagged files and deleted them.
Its a bit tedious but the procedure works.

Same issue after I synced the "Intro to Linear Dynamical Systems" lectures from Stanford, which came from the iTunes store.
Running on a 3GS w/ firmware 3.01 and iTunes 9.01. Seems even 3.1 firmware has this issue according to this thread, so I doubt updating will help.
Symptoms are black screen w/ audio. When right clicking on one of the videos in iTunes and selecting "Create iPod or iPhone version", I get the message, "One or more videos were not converted because they are already in the correct format." The videos sync fine but then only the audio plays in the iPhone's video player, the video is blank, just plain black.
