Problem reading external drive after switching enclosures

My Time Machine backup was on a 2 TB WD My Essential external drive.  I run a 2008 iMac that doesn't support USB3 speeds so I removed the drive from the WD enclosure and put it in a Rocstor enclosure that uses Firewire 800.  After switching enclosures, my iMac wouldn't read the drive without formatting it.  Anyone know why that is?  Does it have something to do with the firmware on the HD itself?  It was no big deal as I was going to format and partition the drive anyway.  I would just like to know why going from USB to Firewire would cause it to do that.  BTW, after reformating the drive, it appears to be working just fine as it did before.

No it is not a problem with the firmware on the drive. It has to do with the Firewire system on the Mac or any computer. I have the same thing happen when I have a drive that was using USB and put that drive in a FW adapter. Once in the FW adapter OS X wants to format it, actually initialize it. Once reconnected by USB again the drive works fine. You do know that you have voided the WD warranty on that unit by taking the drive out.

  • Problem "ejecting" external drive after spotlight indexes it

I had posted to a string that I can't find. Anyway, I've installed Leopard on my 2.0 GHz MacBook. I had to erase all my data to install. (I was in a loop for a little bit but the install kicked in eventually.) After installing Leopard, I attached an external HD to it to transfer some documents, music, etc. that was on the MacBook before. That all went well. I have not done any configurations for Time Machine.
I am trying to "eject" this hard drive and I keeping getting a message "The disk "NAME OF DRIVE" is in use and could not be ejected. Try quitting applications and try again."
What initially happened was that spotlight was automatically indexing it. That is over. I still can't eject it.
I'm out of all applications except "Finder" which is always on. This is a MacBook that is now tied to my desk until I can disconnect this external drive from it. I'm afraid of just unplugging it from the firewire as I've had a similar drive crash when I did that on another mac a few months ago.
I've done "restart" and turned it off and restarted manually. The drive still won't eject.
Any help is appreciated. I haven't been able to figure it out so far.
Some additional info: The external drive does have "clone" copies of the applications that were on my MacBook before I had my MacBook "erased" to install Leopard. I don't have any of those applications running. I don't think that would matter, but the message keeps saying to quit applications.
    Thanks

I don't have an answer for this yet, but I have an additional clue. I've had this happen to me a couple of times since upgrading to Leopard. The first time I was able to fix it by quitting all programs and logging out completely, and then logging in as a different user and ejecting the disk from that account. And now I currently have the same issue, but I've been working so I couldn't take the time to log myself out just to eject an external disk.
What I did find out about it, in my case, is that it seems to be related to the new auto-activation feature for fonts. A quick check to see what files are open on the drive that won't eject reveals:
    Lightning:/> lsof /Volumes/Backup\ 2
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME
    ATSServer 1187 disco txt REG 14,6 32892 71832 /Volumes/Backup 2/Backups/disco/Fonts/VT102Font/..namedfork/rsrc
So somehow Leopard found a font buried in a non-standard location on a backup disk and opened it... It shows up in my fonts menu in TextEdit, for example, but it does not show up on FontBook so I haven't found a way to turn it back off so I can eject the disk. I did go to the FontBook preferences and found where "Automatic font activation" is turned on by default and also checked "Ask me before activating", which was turned off... Hopefully from now on that will let me head off rogue font activation before it becomes an issue.

  • Satellite L505-S5966 - problem with wireless driver after switching to windows 7

    Hi,
I got this laptop in July operating under Vista. I had some problems then with getting my wireless driver to boot properly so it would pick up wireless networks and connect. This seemed like a common problem and I was able to find the solution here and fix it. I switched over to Windows 7 this month, and since then my wireless driver has stopped working again. I guess the driver doesn't boot - it won't pick up wireless, and sometimes when I look it seems like the wireless driver doesn't even exist.
Can anyone offer me a solution? I'm getting very frustrated.
    Thanks,
    J

I have the same problem.  Moved the printer from XP to W7 and the colors are not accurate.  It was a great printer under XP.  Did you every get any response?  What did you end up doing?

  • Cannot mount any firewire/USB external drive after software update 10.5.4

After the last software update on 10.5.4 it did not complete the installation, and get stuck at the last step of running installation script for hours. So I have to restart the computer, and it restarted fine. Then I use Disk Utility to check my hard disk, and discovered some file system inconsistency error, so I repaired it (in target disk mode by another Mac). After it is repaired, the file system passed with no error.
But ever since then, I cannot mount any external firewire drive or USB drive. I cannot use Time Machine to backup my disk. I think my firewire and USB ports are fine because I can restart my iMac in target mode and connect to my MacBook via firewire, so the hardwire ports are functional, except that it seems 10.5.4 cannot detect or mount any external drive after the failed software update.
Does anyone encounter similar problem? How can I fix it? I have my disk backed up by TimeMachine but I cannot restore it if it won't let me mount my TimeMachine disk. Is there any other way other than completely reinstall 10.5 from scratch?

first, you should try reinstalling 10.5.4. download the [combo update|http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1054com boupdate.html] and run it. If that doesn't fix the issue, you can use full system restore from TM to go back to a time before the troubles started. to do that boot from the leopard install dvd, once past the language screen go to the Utilities menu at the top and choose "restore from backup".

  • Can't see anything in external drive after renaming a folder

    Hi all,
I can't see anything on my external drive after renaming a folder. I have the drive set up as a Windows drive with access through the volumes folder (I had to transfer  large amount of files from a PC and have it be readable on my MacBook Air); I read a FAQ to set it up a few months ago and it has been working fine since then. I saw the same issue come up with a PC HD on a PC, but the solution was for a PC. I don't see anything else like that in the support community (or if it's there, then I'm not searching for it the right way). There is no partition on the drive and it still shows as having the same amount of data written on the drive as before the accident.
    Many thanks in advance!

If you upgrade the your router, it would be the firmware that will be upgraded. For more information regarding upgrading the firmware, try this link.
For your external drive, you might need to map the drive again with a different name.
    Hope this helps.

  • Time Machine can't find external drive after installing Lion

Time Machine can't find external drive after installing Lion. I have a Laice 1 terabyte external drive that worked fine with Snow Leopard and now no show ... tried connecting it to front port and Mac Pro can't see it. Also lost Office,Quicken, and Final Cut Pro  says: " You can't open application because Power PC apps are no longer supported" this is Not a good surprise!

Does the drive work when just directly connected? If so, have you prepped the drive?
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

    Hi-
I got a new PC laptop, retrieved all old HD contents from my external HD, installed LR 5.6 (5.4 on previous PC) and when I tried to open up my old Lightroom catalog it has an error saying "Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo.  You will not be able to make adjustments to this photo".  I tried to open the catalog straight from my external HD with the same error message. I've read about four billion forum threads to try to figure it out- files do not seem to be missing as most threads indicate.  The other threads suggest there is a corruption with the file, but I don't THINK that is the case.  Are there any other suggestions?   If the file is corrupted, how do I find out for sure?  Have I lost all my edits??

  • Internal drive installed in as as external drive in an enclosure problems

I removed my internal hard drive from my graphite iMac, encased it in an Adaptec USB 2 hard drive enclosure, plugged it in, restarted my computer (already with a new internal hard drive with Tiger MacOS working) but could not see the icon of the new external hard drive on the screen. The Desktop Icon setting is a Finders Preference, so does CDs show up on the Desktop?
At first, I thought it needed the Hard Drive checked till I mounted my USB drive. I can check and uncheck "CD,DVD, and iPod" and it will show and disappear accordingly. (so long as Apple did not change this from our Mac OS 10 versions)
Now if nothing is working beyond this point, something went bad, if everything is properly connected.

  • Cant read .mts files with FCP-X on external drive after recovery

I used Data Rescue 3 on my Imac to recover lost files. They came back on the external drive as .mts files but will not import to FCP X. Why?? Do they need to  be in some kind of file for FCP X to recognise them??

FCP cannot import .mts files without the folder structure that contains their metadata. You can use ClipWrap to rewrap the files to QuickTime.

  • Can't find iTunes Library on external drive after iTunes 8 install

My music library (50GB) has always been on an external drive. After installing iTunes 8 I went to preferences to change from default to this drive but nothing showed up. The complete library is still on the disk. Tried reinstalling V 7 but still no luck.
Any ideas how to "reconnect" the library ?
iPOD is also still complete. Is there a reverse recovery that my iPOD content could be retrieved to my external drive as the library ?
    Message was edited by: samben52

Changing the Library location within iTunes instructs the program were to store future music when Importing - not where to go look for current music.
You music files may be on the ExHD, but your music metadata (Playlists, Playcounts, Ratings, and other potential important attributes) are kept in the Library Database file. See: What are the iTunes Library files?
If you did not save a copy of this file, you may be in for a long recovery.
This well-written iLounge Article is a must-read for anyone who wants/needs a better understanding of how iTunes manages your music. It may shed some light on what you need to do next. or at the very least, help you describe your specific problem here a bit better.

  • Folder problems on external drive, not showing correct file size

I've run across a strange problem. I'm media managing for a tv show, meaning I'm offloading video from CF cards onto 2 external drives, one is a Drobo Raid (set up for backup) and another is a Lacie rugged drive. After copying the media to both drives, the folder I copy will match, but sometimes as I drill upward in my folder structure, suddenly the file sizes will not match. To be more clear: 2 folders will show differing file sizes, but inside that folder is only another folder, nothing else, which matches across the drives. I've shown all files in finder and there's no hidden files, though sometimes I see the ds_store files are different sizes (8k vs 16k), but that's not always the case. Sometimes if I simply create a new folder and move it's contents into it I can get the folders to match, but sometimes that doesn't work. It's part of my workflow to show that these copies match exactly via screenshots, and although the most important folder (the direct folder holding the footage) always matches, these folder problems are super frustrating as it's not constant, and any workarounds also work inconsistantly.
I had an accidental disconnect of the Drobo one time, and although none of the data seems to have any problem, I fear it's done something to the directory. The rugged drive is swapped out every few days and the problem seems to be on the Drobo. Because the nature of the data is pretty important, I'm afraid to just try messing around with repairing or other software solutions unless I know it's super safe and won't harm the data.
I'm at a loss as to what's causing it and at the very least how to avoid it cropping up. Any help or insight would be appreciated!

I had the same problem with my iMac, first I repaired the disk, then I ejected the disk, restarted, and then reinserted the USB in a different port.  All of my files magically showed up.  I don't know what caused the error but it has been working fine since.

  • Formatting an external drive after use on NSLU2

I have a Western Digital 1TB My Book that I am trying to reclaim for use on another windows system.
When I plug it into a Windows 7 system it fails to find the HID driver - but I think this could get fixed by downloading the right driver.  Seems to work without the HID driver anyway, so I carry on.
The drive is not visible in Windows Explorer, so I open Manage and go to Storage -> Disk Management.  A window appears informing me that "You must initialize a disk before Logical Disk Manager can access it.".  I select the disk and use the MBR partition style, then click OK.  A new pop up appears with the title "Virtual Disk Manager" and the message "The system cannot find the file specified.".
Right, I'll fix this.  Time to break out the big guns.  I start DISKPART, the command line process.  "LIST DISK" shows me which disk number I need.  "SELECT DISK 1" makes it active.  "CLEAN" clears it.  "CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY" will activate i... Oh. "DiskPart has encountered an error: The system cannot find the file specified. See the System Event Log for more information.".  Not good.
Any ideas?  The drive has been used as the backup drive - drive 2 of a two-external-drive set - and has been reported fine as of last backup.  I've done a lot of searching for this and found nothing so far, any idea why the NSLU2 has made the drive unformattable?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

When you first plug in a WD mybook straight out of the box, it has an autorun.inf that runs the installer for the HID driver. I think you can download the software from the Western Digital website.
The HID driver is not strictly necessary, by the way: it's only used for the button on the back side and the light on the front side. The drive itself is controlled by the USB Mass Storage Device that's included with Windows.
From your post, it sounds like you are doing the right thing: use disk management or diskpart to re-initialize the partition table (CLEAN does that). But then CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY fails? That's strange and it shouldn't happen. Perhaps you have a virus scanner running that is trying to protect your disk from writing the MBR.
Try switching off any virus scanners you have; if you can't, you can try burning a System Rescue CD and booting it to do the partitioning and formatting. See the link in my signature.

    Frequent NAS200 Answers:
    1. DISABLE the "convert failed logins to guest logins" option to fix permission problems.
    2. NEVER insert or remove hard disks while the power is on. NAS200 doesn't support hot swapping.
    3. ALWAYS use the power button to turn the NAS200 off, don't just unplug it.
    4. Don't trust RAID. Make BACKUPS!
    5. To ACCESS the disks directly, you will need ext2 and/or XFS file systems. I recommend using SystemRescueCD.

  • Problems with extrenal drive after upgrade to Lion

    Hello,
after upgrading to Lion last week I am experiencing some problems with my LaCie 1 TB FireWire (800) external drive.
The problem is not that big however. When I delete files on the external drive they do not appear in the Trash Bin.
However when I unmount and again mount the partitions using the Disk Utility the deleted files do appear in the
Trash Bin. The external drive has 3 partitions: 2 X Mac OS X Journaled and one FAT. The above described problem
appers on all partitions. I performed repair and verify to all partitions but Disk Utility says that everything is OK! Any idea ?
P.S. With Snow Leopard I have never experienced such problem.

  • 10.5.7 update results in major problem with external drives

yesterday I did the 10.5.7 update and now I can't access any of my external hard drives. The message is "you do not have proper privileges". Have tried downloading/installing the combo update, running permissions repair with Disk Utility, even tried reinstalling my original 10.5.2 system with 'Archive and Install', still the problem persists.
In the privileges dialog, the setting is 'custom' and I can't switch anything back to "read/write".
