Problem recovering files after performing minimized system image

I have been looking for a quick and easy way to remove bloatware on my HP Pavilion dv6 laptop and I recently came across the option to minimize the system image.  When performing the task, I was given the option to first back up all my files and I thought this was great.  After waiting about 2 hours for it to creat the backup, it created a 67.5 GB file on my backup drive and then proceeded to minimize the system image.  When it was complete my laptop rebooted and went through all the steps of setting up for first-time use.  When everything was done, I hooked up my backup drive and navigated to the file recovery folder entitled "Backup_2011-10-28 125331."  Within the folder was a "Recovery.exe" file so I assumed I simply had to run the file and everything would be restored.  However, all it did was create a file on drive C: in the "System Recovery Files" that basically looks like just a list of files.  The file that was made was only 12 GB which doesn't make sense considering the original backup folder took up 67.5 GB on my backup drive.
I assumed that this recovery file would simply perform a system recovery, putting back all the user-created files where they were originally and basically restoring my system to how it was before minimizing the system image, except obviously for the fact that the system image would be smaller.  Was I wrong in assuming this or am I not restoring my system correctly?  When going into windows and attempting to restore from the backup created by whatever HP program that made it, the file isn't even given as a possible source to back up from.  How can I get my computer back to where it was before the restore?  I had over 100 GB worth of music, games, and programs on there that are now lost and trying to even remember what all I lost will be greatly time-consuming, not to mention how long it will take actually getting all the files back.  Can anyone help me with this? Thanks in advance!

Thank you for your prompt reply!  I looked in the FBData folder like you said but there doesn't appear to be a "Backup.wim" file at all.  There are 368 "Backup#.swm" files and a couple files called "SourceFileList" and "TypeList" but no wim file.  The "Backup_2011-10-28 125331" file is 67.5 GB (72,481,045,331 bytes).
Here's a list of the files and folders in the file:
FBData (67.4 GB Folder)
language (1.61 MB Folder)
Dbg.log (398 KB Text Doc)
DiscVerifierLib.dll (222 KB file)
HPFileMgr.dll (440 KB file)
Restore.exe (17.6 MB application)
Hope this helps! Thanks once again.

The one image that did work (LiteTouchPE_x64.wim) was from the OS I imported to Microsoft Workbench but the components are different to any that I have seen online when looking on how to do this.
I have made sure that the architecture is x64 and tried from ISO files I have on the system already but get the same error.
This is the first project I have been involved in and only ever done IT support before this.

  • Windows Vista/Service Pack 2-after performing a System Recovery my Hard Drive is full.

I would like to thank you in advance for your patience.  I am new to this forum solution method.  I will do my best to explain what is happening with my computer without too much unnecessary information.
My laptop is 2 yrs old and it all these error messages started popping up repeatedly.  Windows Defender wouldn't open, system info errors, I/E crashes and so on.  After numerous attempts to fix it myself,  I asked Microsoft support for the solution.     M/S Tech Support instructed me to perform a System Recovery, through the startup/F-11 method and so I did.  I followed all of M/S instructions and to skip the step for making a set of Backup disks, as well as the Recovery Manager's steps to complete the recovery.  After all was done I noticed that all my personal files, (pic's, music, etc...),  were gone and that my Hard Drive is out of space.  I did a Disk Cleanup and defrag on both the C: and D: drives hoping that it would solve my problem.  NOT!!!  I have been looking through all the "Trouble shooting" support topics on both MS and HP.  I have been afraid of doing any of the MANY suggested steps for fear of causing more damage.  The computer, except for the D: drive delima and Windows Defender not opening,  seems to function properly, so I look at that as the real blessing in all this.
Please help me by telling me that there is a way to fix the Hard drive and get Windows Defender to respond.  Most importantly, how to go about getting it done.  I just don't know how or why this happened.
Thank you so much for your help.  Nice to know that there are web sites and forums like these to go to for help.  I look I look forward to your response.

This excerpt taken from HP manual for your computer.
On some models, you can perform a recovery from the partition on the hard drive from either the Start
button or f11. This restores the computer to it's factory condition.
To restore the system from the partition, follow these steps:
    1. Access Recovery Manager in either of the following ways:
    ● Select Start > All Programs > Recovery Manager > Recovery Manager.
    – or –
    ● Restart the computer and press f11 while the “Press <F11> for recovery” message is displayed
on the screen. Then select Recovery Manager.
    Recovery Manager opens.
    2. Click Advanced Options.
    3. Click System recovery, and then click Next.
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions
Does this sound like what you did?
Oh yeah, Your D:\ drive is your Recovery partition and you should never mess with it.
It contains all the information to restore your computer to factory condition.

  • How to recover file after battery exhaustion

How do I recover unsaved files after battery exhaustion? Before my snow leopard installation, when I replug power after battery exhaustion, the system would restart and resume the desktop with my working files. After I installed snow leopard, the system simply went for a complete reboot every time I replug power after battery died, and thus I couldn't find the files I worked on unless I saved them. How do I find/recover the unsaved files?
I use macbook and snow leopard. Any advice would be highly appreciated!

I think you are seriously confused about terminology, as your post doesn't make a lot of sense. Rebooting refers to the act of restarting the Mac, just as if you turned off the machine and then turned it back on again. It restarts the system from scratch (ie, with a "fresh desktop").
Sleep is a completely different thing. It allows the machine to stay on while cutting power to as many components as possible. This allows the machine to look like it's turned off, but it retains its state and wakes up with all the same apps/windows open.
If you are putting your machine to sleep and finding later that it has not retained the state, as you seem to be saying, that means the battery has died and the machine shut down. Not a nice, gentle shut down, like when you choose Apple -> Shut Down, but an abrupt, kick-in-the-head sort of shut down that has the potential to do damage to your system software. Not to mention that you'll lose unsaved changes to open documents. This is a problem, and you need to address it.

  • How do I restore my backup (.wim files) after running HP System recovery on a G62 with windows 7

I had to do a system restore after getting a blue screen and I backed up the files on my external drive. after restoring the system I tried to restore my files from my external with Recovery manager but it didn't see my external so I couldn't restore. I copied and pasted the backup folder on my g62 desktop and tried again with no results. As far as I can tell the restore was done because my free space on the g 62 decreased by the same size as the backup, but when I open the c:\ drive I can't see the transfer. these are .wim files and I even tried to call tech service (my warranty juse expired) and they were trying to sell me extended warranty for the next year to help me. the problem exist with HP if they had good programs that follow up what it was meant to do maybe Today I wouldn't be here looking for help. when I restored the system, recovery told me the it would install my backup, but nothing happened leaving me hanging.NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you call AppleCare they will be more than willing to help you. Use the appropriate phone number on this page. Tell them you need a support related fulfillment - replacement disks. As shldr says there will be a small charge, but you will be able to install your system again.
    Best of luck.

  • My mbpro would not start so re-installed (as instructed by the website) how do i recover files after i re-installed my OS?  thank you.

my 13" mbpro would not start so i followed the instructions & turned out i needed to reinstall the OS.  can i still recover my files after i erased & reinstalled?  if yes, how do i do it?  thanks.

If the system partition was erased, recovery of any files previously stored on it as identifiable entities is unlikely.
Keeping an external CarbonCopyClone of the startup disk (free download) gets you a bootable clone (with all applications installed) so you have a chance of cloning back onto the internal disk if you ever need to reformat the partition again.

  • [SOLVED] recover files after accidental formatting of zfs

Ok, Let it the 'you are an idiot' comments roll...
    Long version:
I wanted to play with zfs, so I was installing freebsd alongside my typical arch installation. During the installation, I was astonished to realize that I must have been confused by the BSD drive naming convention because I had overwritten my data partition with zfs. Of course (I am an idiot) and I had no backup.
    short version:
Used to have an ext4 partition that had some files on it. Now I have a zfs partition that has no files on it.
I did not do ANYTHING after I realized the mistake. I didn't even finish the installation. To the best of my knowledge, it has never even been mounted.
What utilities give me the best chance of recovery? Is there anything specific I should know about this specific situation, recovering a journeled file system out of zfs?

Turns out that TestDisk was IS in fact capable of recovering lost partitions after they have been deleted, or sometimes reformatted. According to their wiki, they do not support ZFS filesystem, so I decided to try it in hopes that it would still recover TO a zfs partition.
And, I happen to have a copy of TestDisk handy on my Parted Magic CD.
    Steps taken:
-From the main menu on Test disk, Select advanced.
    -Select analyze partition data.
-This correctly identified my old linux partitions, and they were marked with a D which means they were 'deleted'. I don't know if it is completely right, because I never bothered to write down the specific Hard Drive geometry before, but it looks right to me.
-hit 'Write' to write the corrected partition table to disk.
-I was able to see recovered files through the testdisk program, but I'll have to reboot for the kernel become aware of the partitions and let me mount them. So I'll be back in 5 minutes to report whether this worked.

  • FAILURE ( 5640 ): FALSE: Verify File: \\SERVER\DeploymentShare\Operating Systems\Image 11-13-2014.wim\image.wim ERROR

    Guys,
I need help with this error please. I have a WDS in building 13 and another 1 in building 31; Both servers have MDT 2013. At some point, both deployment shares were linked via MDT but I deleted that few days to solve some deployment share corruption in building
    31 WDS.
Presently I have 2 32bit images (my 64bit images work fine) giving me the following MDT error in BUILDING 13 during the image deployment:
    FAILURE ( 5640 ): FALSE: Verify File: \\BUILDING 31 SERVER\DeploymentShare\Operating Systems\Image 11-13-2014.wim\image.wim
Litetouch deployment failed, Return Code = -2147467259 0x80004005
Failed to run the action: Install Operating System.
    Unknown error (Error:00001608; Source: Unknown)
The Execution of the group (Install) has failed and the execution has been aborted. An action failed....
Please note, BUILDING 13 deployment share is not linked to BUILDING 31 deployment share. I don't understand why this error is pointing to BUILDING 31 deployment share.
\\BUILDING 31 SERVER\DeploymentShare\Operating Systems\Image 11-13-2014.wim\image.wim  has been removed. I need the task sequence to point to
    \\BUILDING 13 SERVER\DeploymentShare\Operating Systems\Image 11-13-2014.wim. BUILDING 13 deployment Share task sequences are pointing to
    \\BUILDING 13 SERVER\DeploymentShare as well as my CustomSettings.ini and Bootstrap.ini
    1. I have diskpart and cleaned the disc, no luck.
    2. I have checked the Install action for both images task sequences and even verified each action on both tasks and cant find any error.
    3. I have re-generated the boot images and retyped
    \\BUILDING 13 SERVER\DeploymentShare on its CustomSettings.ini and Bootstrap.ini
    4. I am in the process of copying Image 11-13-2014.wim back to
\\BUILDING 31 SERVER\DeploymentShare\Operating Systems BUT again I don't understand why these task sequences are pointing to building 31. If this step doesn't work, I will restore both images from a backup and re-added them to building 13 MDT.
But I don't think these steps are the solution.I am out of ideas here...

I disabled McAfee AV, moved images boot files to a different location, regenerate boot images files in MDT, update deployment share, re-add boot files to WDS & refresh WDS. This works for me.

  • Curious about "Recovered Files" after restart

Is there a way to find out the source of recovered files and what they mean? Just curious.
    My latest were:
    A folder: <msoclip>
    A folder: <CardModeFiles>
    Thank you.

Recovered items appear when a program that creates temporary files either crashes or does not clean up after itself properly.  The Mac OS cleans the files up and puts them in this folder. This is an old apple tech note, but it is still valid:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh2267.html
I think msoclip comes from some Microsoft software. I don't know about the CardModeFiles thingy. You can safely delete these files.

  • "MerpAD RDC" file in Trash "Recovered Files" after every startup.

Does anyone know what this "MerpAD RDC" file is? It shows up in the Recovered Files in my Trash every time I reboot / startup. It's not causing any trouble, just curious as to what it is.

I have the same issue. I don't seem to see it everytime, but almost. I am going to try to keep better track of it. I have seen several different files show up here. Mostly this one.

  • Is it possible to recover files after reinstalling my whole Mac OS X?

I recently reinstalled my whole Mac OS X in my new iMac. But I realized I forgot to backup some files (my Pictures folder!).
Is there a way I can recover those files? When I reinstalled the software (using the DVD's the iMac came with) I used the option erase and install (I don't remember exactly what it said but it was the complete reinstallation option.
    Thank you.

It could be - remember that a folder is really just a special kind of file. The files within it are just additional files, linked to it as contents in the file allocation table. And all of them are not necessarily kept as a discreet contiguous chunk of data on the hard disc. So yes, it is possible that the folder itself is fine, but the files within it are not.
Or, as mentioned, it could be something else, like permissions, or a corrupted iPhoto database, or who knows?
Did you look at the DR3 FAQ? Does it make any sense to you, given whatever was displayed while the recovery software was running?
    DR3 online FAQ entry:
I recovered files, but they won’t open. What’s wrong?
The answer to this question depends on whether you’re talking about files recovered from under the “CBR” folder, or other ones.
Files recovered by catalog (i.e. Not from the CBR folder)
It's normal for a small percentage of recovered files to be bad. But if you have checked a number of them and none of them are good, then chances are that they were recovered with wrong ABL setting. Pick out a few files to use as test files, and go back and select a different ABL choice (Expert>Allocation Blocks Layout..menu) and recover and test those few. If you find an ABL setting that gives good results on those files, re-do your big recovery with that setting. For more information, read the material on Allocation Block Layout in section 8.2.1 of the Data Rescue 3 Users Guide.
Files recovered by content (i.e. from the CBR folder)
It's also normal for a small percentage of these files to be bad. If the original file was fragmented (not stored on disk in consecutive blocks), then it can not be properly recovered by content. In most normal situations, most files on a user's disk will not be fragmented. Typical fragmentation rates for files tend to be just a few percent.
Note: The ABL setting plays No role in recovering files under the CBR folder.

  • Recovering files after a force shut down

    **** all,
My mbp froze up last night and I had to do a forced shut down. When I rebooted all was fine except for a pages document that was open during the freeze was lost. Can this file be recovered?
    Thanks,
    Brian

I don't know if Pages periodically saves to a temp file, but if it does, that temp file should be in a Recovered Files folder in your trash can. If it's not there, or if you emptied your trash and got rid of that Recovered Files folder, then you're out of luck. Any unsaved changes are gone.

    Hi,
You can use transaction code SNOTE to see whether a particuler OSS note is implemented or not.
First navigate to GOTO> Download SAP Note and import the OSS note to your system.
Then navigate to GOTO > SAP Note Browser and check the status of the OSS note, it will show whether it is implemented in your system or not.
Also in the OSS note, there is release specific information. You can check whether that OSS note is applicable to your release or not.
    Regards,
