Problem reinstalling Mail.
I ran out of hard disk space so I eliminated applications that I wasn't using. I now have a new hard disk and plenty of room so I wanted to reinstall Mail. I checked the forum and got pacifist, using the Leopard disk, and installed mail version 3.0. When I tried to open it I got this message: You cannot use this version of the application Mail.app with this version of Mac OS X. So I then got the mailupdate 10.5.6dmg. But when I run that I get this message: You cannot install Mail Update on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update."
Is this because I am using a G4 computer? Or is there something else I need to be doing?
As always, I am grateful for this forum and the help you provide.
Toby
You need to download and install the 10.5.8 Combo Update (a 759 MB download) again, as that has an update to Mail in it.

Problem with Mail (4.5) Crashing
So I know there's been some problems with Exchange and Mail but I have just recently experienced a problem with Mail. Somehow Outlook stole default application resposibility from Mail so I removed Outlook and now when I open Mail, nothing happens. When I go to Window -> Message Viewer, I get the following error message. Everything had been working fine just yesterday, what's changed?

Have you tried launching Mail in a newly create user account?
If you have, does the new account have the same issue?
If it does they you may need to reinstall the application itself the disc.
If it doesn't then you may just need to pull the plist for that application and allow it to recreate itself. -
Hi,
I'm running OS 10.11 and am having some consistent problems with Mail and Safari on my MacPro Dual 2.66. Here they are:
Sometimes, for no apparent reason, selecting these applications from the dock no longer opens the application (or a new window if already opened), but causes them to be revealed in the finder.
In Safari, when this problem occurs, another symptom seems to be that new windows will ONLY open in a new tab, even though I have preferences set to open links in a new window. If I click on a bookmark within a folder in the bookmark toolbar, Safari will open ALL the bookmarks in the folder in new tabs!!
In Mail, when I open my Inbox, clicking on various messages will highlight (in blue) ALL the messages I'm clicking on, instead of simply displaying the highlighted message in the reader.
The only way to get things back to normal is to reboot my machine, which is getting to be a total drag, especially since this seems to happen fairly often.
One other thing that may be related- if my screen saver is running, and I move the mouse to go to an active screen, the computer will "freeze." It stays like this indefinitely- I figured out that if I press the button on the machine itself it will go to sleep, and I can wake it up and then everything is fine, but I don't understand what's going on.
I have tried using Disk Utility and Disk Warrior, and have used OnyX to clean out my system cache and aall sorts of other stuff, but to no avail.
Is anybody else experiencing any of this? I'm starting to get really frustrated. Thanks for any advice.
Cheers,
AndrewScott,
I had posted earlier that I had Flash payer problems and then QuickTime and PDF preview problems too, on my Intel PowerMac. I could not figure out what the problem was, because fixing permissions and moving plugins did not work. Console indicated that the Quicktime components were not found, with the problem in a webkit pref file somewhere (nil field value). Anyway, I bailed and reinstalled Leopard from a 10.5.0 DVD, and then updated using the combo updater to 10.5.3. Everything worked. Then, after the 'Java for Mac OSX 10.5 Update 1', it all broke again. This time, repairing permissions resulted in:
User differs on "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.4.2/Home/lib/jvm.cfg", should be 0, user is 95.
User differs on "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.4.2/Libraries/classlist" , should be 0, user is 95.
Now it all works again. This is obviously a flaw with the Java update, and also somehow Disk Utility did not find it earlier. Anyway, take a look at reverting the Java update, or manually changing user for those files (I suppose user 0 is root, but maybe it is nobody).

How do I remove and reinstall Mail under iOS?
My Mail program with both my iPad 2 and my iPhone 4S keeps growing constantly in size. My iPad Mail is now at 1.7 GB. ALL messages are deleted, trash is deleted, etc. The program just isn't reclaiming storage after deletions.
I filed a bug with Apple as an Apple Developer but, after about 3 weeks, I got a message from Apple indicating that the bug had been removed because it was a duplicate. In other words, other people also have this problem (it is possible that ALL people may not have it).
Two upgrades ago, my iPad had to totally re-install from scratch (something went wrong with the upgrade). The Mail program went back to about 50 MB. As mentioned, it has now grown back to 1.7 GB (on iPad 2, only 1.4 GB on my iPhone). At this size, it is taking a significant amount of my RAM -- it was probably the reason the upgrade failed two times ago (not enough free RAM).
I need to remove my mail program and reinstall it -- or even completely refresh my iPhone/iPad. I keep hoping Apple will fix the problem but 7.1.2 still hasn't fixed it.
How do I remove and reinstall Mail (or -- at the worst -- refresh the entire iOS device (using backups from iCloud for important settings)?
Thank you. It will probably be up to 2+ GB by the end of July. You may a bit mixed up in your terms.
RAM in an iPad/iPhone is like the RAM in your computer. It's used to run the operating system and open apps.
On the other hand, your storage space (16GB, 32GB, etc) is like the capacity of your computer's hard drive.
If you are short of storage space, look at these links.

http://www.igeeksblog.com/how-to-remove-other-data-from-iphone/
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

I have to reinstall Mail as it's not working well. How can I make a back up of my emails so as not to lose them all?
Thank you for your time Woody. Recently the Mac seems to freeze a lot, seemingly due to a problem with the airport, especially if the computer is inactive for anything more than a few minutes. Then yesterday I suddenly couldn't send or receive messages so I got in touch with my server and they reconfigured the mail account. I can now receive messages but can't send them, always getting a timed out message when I try to send an email. I phoned the server again and they said it must be a problem with Mail as we tried sending a message online from the server's webpage and it worked fine, so they suggested I reinstall Mail. So hence my original question. Sorry for the rambling! I'm not very computer minded.

How do I reinstall mail.app on OS 10.6.8 without an install disk
Software update recently updated my software automatically to 10.6.8 on my MacBook 2.4 Ghz Intel Core Duo. Apparently because i organize my applications into folders inside the root Applications folder, the mail app was not updated properly. I put the mail.app back in the root application folder and downloaded MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.8. After running the update I still have the same problem I get the notice "You can't use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OS X. You have Mail version 4.5 (1084/1085). It can’t be used on Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 (Build 10K549). For more information, click the Help button." I don't have original install disk available to me. I don't know what I can do to get my Mail.app to work it is very important because it sorts out all the junk mail. Is there any way to reinstall mail without the original system disk?
Please Allen Eckhart, don't want your help. Can someone else help me?Seems Apple is making things more difficult with every OS update. Back in the day you used to be able to organize your applications instead of having them all in one folder. You used to have a lot more freedom. More and more it is just easier to use a third party app. So I'm gonna install Thunderbird until Apple comes up with an easy way to fix the mail app. it seems that eveything in help says you just gotta reinstall the system from scratch. I would rather just use an open source product that I can put into any forlder I want without having to worry about it screwing itself up. Had similar experience with Safari now it seems like it is time to get rid of Mail.

I have a Mac mini operating on Mac OS X(10.6.8) Snow Leopard. In the last couple of weeks I have been having intermittent problems sending mail from Mac MAIL, especially if I hit the reply button. It whirls around for ever and then tells me to 'Try Later' or 'Try Again'. When I shut down my computer and open up mail again, I hear the mail whizzing off. I have just tried it now and it went in the time that it has taken me to compose this email. But sometimes the mail doesn't go at all. Could it me because I have too many messages in my inbox and sent boxes (around 1000 in each)? I read somewhere that you should delete Mail in library/pref/com.apple.mail.plst and reinstal it. But I'm frightened to do this in case I can't re-instal it as I don't know how to.

How do I reinstall Mail?
Hello,
Just wondering if there is a way to reinstall Mail.app?
To cut a long story short, Mail went bonkers after a power cut and no fixes have worked - so I"m thinking maybe take it off completely and start again!
Thanks,
Sarahxray999 wrote:
dunno if a reinstall from the original installer dvd and then run the combo update for 10.4.11 would help any.
mail crashes frequently one of my 2 macminis*; on the other mac, this program refuses to do a search within the body of any mail.
thus i wonder: is there a new(er) version than "2.1.3. (753.1/753)" of mail app available somewhere?
(*e.g. for the previously instabile safari, i've found a new build available at the apple developers' site).
You might want to start a new thread to avoid polluting this one as this seems to be a different issue. I don't think you'll find Mail anywhere on its own so the latest version for Tiger is the one you've got.
Sounds as if you might have two issues here.
1) crashing case: are the crashes random or is there a pattern?
2) search case: what exactly happens when you try to search?
both) repair permissions using /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility if you haven't already; boot from the install disk and use Disk Utility to repair the startup volume if you still have issues, then reboot and repair permissions again
if necessary) try another user account - create if necessary in the Accounts pane of System Preferences - does the problem still occur in that account?

Can I reinstall Mail.app on Lion 10.7?
After trying to import my mail from Snow Leopard, my Mail.app in Lion 10.7 has become unresponsive – I can't open a Message Viewer Window, nor can I open preferences to make changes to my accounts.
I'd like to reinstall Mail, but can't find a way to do this. Any suggestions?
Thanks,Hello,
I had the same problem this morning. After ugrading to 10.7.4 Mail.app could not import the messages, and hence, never started.
The failure message stated "The import failed. An error occurred during the import. Make sure you have available space in your home folder and try again." There was no other option button but "Quit." So I quited, checked, and confirmed there were 414.19 GB available; and I used Finder and System Report for this purpose. Afterwards I tried again. The failure persisted.
Ironically I wan't able to neither read from Webmail, nor access Mail.app. So I confirmed with the Data Center the server's status. Everything was up and running. Still, they restarted the server for the sake of certainty. The problems persisted.
So I did as suggested here. And it worked smoothly.
Since I use IMAP on my settings I went for a fresh configuration with all my mail accounts. And it worked smoothly.
Thanks William for the tip.
Thanks Shaun for marking the reply as the solution.

I need to reinstall Mail 5.0 where do I find the software?
I need to reinstall Mail 5.0 for Lion. Where can I find the software?
You can download CS5.5 here: Download and Installation Help at the bottom.
Personally, I would use the cleaner tool re-installation steps here: Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
Keep in mind, CS5.5 was made quite a while before OS10.10, if you do get it running, there's no guarantee that a program that old will function correctly in an OS that new. -
Problems with Mail...
Initially, the problem started when why wife said that her e-mails disappeared. I looked at her screen and saw that there was a warning triangle next to the Mailboxes' Inbox in the upper left corner of the Mail app. I thought it odd that there was no list of e-mails in the right side of the window, but one of her mailboxes had a flag with the number 15, indicating that there were 15 messages, but there was "invisible".
So, I took at look at her iCloud account's preferences and tried to change the Port to 993, but I kept getting an error message about the incoming path could not be empty...
I then went to start Googling similar themes and reading the discussions here. Nothing seems to help me, but somehow, I finally got Mail to work...
First off, IF you're using OS X 10.8.2 (Mtn. Lion) and Mail (6.2), the com.apple.mail.plist is NOT in the "usual" expected location. Thanks poster Thomas A Reed, the com.apple.mail.plist can be found here:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Preferences
This was a BIG help. But in my situation, the com.apple.mail.plist file was not there. Instead, I found "com.apple.mail.lockedfile". But even after I deleted it, Mail still wasn't working currently.
So, I decided to go back in time. Thankfully, Time Machine does come handy at times. I was able to get the com.apple.mail.plist file in Time Machine from a date prior to the problem. But even this "new" plist file didn't help.
So, be it "voodoo magic" or just that God was on my side, I tried a couple of other things...
First, I took the mailbox offline (Mail's Mailbox menu > Take All Accounts Offline). As I even tried taking things offline, but going back online didn't initially help. But I took it offline again.
I then tried going back to into the Account preferences (Mail menu > Preferences > Accounts > Account Information) and changed Alias to icloud.com, instead of mac.com or me.com, and typed in the correct password. I made sure that the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) was "smtp.mail.me.com". I went into Advanced and typed "imap.mail.me.com", made sure that Port was "993", checked Use SSL, and Authentication to Password.
I click to to another of Mail's preferences to bring up the Save dialog. And when I clicked Save, it did not click. It saved for the first time. No error message at all. A positive sign!
So, I then when to Mail's Window menu and selected Activity and when I selected to Take All Accounts Online, I could see that everything was working! Yeah! Mail was now working as expected. It was an awesome sight!
Now, please remember that these are my observations. May this be a hopeful guide to your situation. I cannot swear that this is THE solution, but something worked for me. Like I said, maybe God was smiling on me as the problem with Mail was on my wife's MacBook Air. So, Mail is now working, I'm happy and ultimately, my wife will be happy now that she can use her Mac like she expects it to work...I have completley reinstalled the OS, starting from the Software reinstall disk, and did all the upgrades to Tiger, and am still having the problem.
My daughter didn't use Mail, as I didn't get around to setting up an account for her yet.
I just used Sync to try to fix it, by importing all my settings, but still no go. -
Strange Problem with Mail & Address Book

I'm having a strange problem with Mail & Address Book.
When I go to compose a new message from Mail and hit the Address button (to show my email addresses), it won't launch the contacts window!

If I quit Address Book, i'll get this from console;
2007-10-15 22:58:37.892 Address Book[417] -[ABAddressBook setDefaultCountryCode:] called with a unknown country code 'us'
I tried deleting the preferences, re-installing Address Book, also tried creating a new user, again no luck!
Can somebody help!!!
Please?!Hi dp13.
Do you have any Address Book plug-ins or system utilities that could interfere with Address Book? In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?
/Library/Address Book Plug-Ins/
~/Library/Address Book Plug-Ins/
To make accurately reporting this information easier, you may open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type the following command (you can just copy it here and paste it in Terminal), and press <Return>. You can then copy the output of that command from Terminal and paste it in your reply to this post:
ls -1 /Library/Address\ Book\ Plug-Ins ~/Library/Address\ Book\ Plug-Ins
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.
<hr>
Did you also reinstall the appropriate Combo Update after reinstalling Address Book?
Quit all the applications and verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with the computer:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update
Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update for PowerPC
Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update for Intel
After installing the Combo Update, the computer may restart twice and the first restart may take several minutes. This is normal.
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
Troubleshooting installation and software updates
Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk and back up before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed. -
Anyone else having problems with Mail after installing Mountain Lion?
Since upgrading to mountain lion, I have had a number of problems with Mail. At the moment, it is predominantly when my desktop imac goes to sleep overnight. In the morning, it will not receive mail. The app will not close, so I force quit it. Trying to reopen Mail after that just does not happen, so I have to restart my machine to get things going again. Any tips?
If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS. -
I am having a lot of crashing problems and other problems with my powerbook g4 OS X 10.4.3 macintosh. I suspect that the problem is Mail.
I need help to do what I want to maybe fix this problem. I need to backup all my mail folders & the sent emails (but not Inbox, Drafts, Junk & .mac account). I need to back up the rules as well. Then I want to completely delete Mail and all mail associated files. Then I would like to reinstall OS X 10.4 mail and import or reinstall the mail folders I backed up.
Is this possible? How do I go about the backing up part and finding all the filesw to delete? Will the emails I save and then import or reinstall lose their connection to attached documents? Is the Mail.app crashing and if not, which applications are crashing and why do you suspect the crashing and other problems are being caused by a problem with the Mail.app that by re-installing the application will resolve?
If the Mail.app is crashing and is caused by any of the mailboxes or rules you want to backup and keep, re-installing the Mail.app will not resolve it. All files associated with the Mail.app are located in the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail. One additional file associated with the Mail.app is the Mail.app preference file which is required unless you are interested in re-entering all email account information when re-installing Mail.
Please provide more info regarding the problems you are having since re-installing the Mail.app rarely resolves any problems with the Mail.app or with any other applications. -
Tried to reinstall Mail with Pacifist, now says I can't open with Version
Used Pacifist to reinstall Mail off my Install Discs since it was crashing yet when I tried to load Mail now this message comes up:
'You cannot use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac OS X.'
How can I fix this? The first step to avoid these problems is not to try reinstalling things, since the problem is very rarely the application. You'll just create more problems for yourself, like this one.
You reinstalled the original version of Mail that came with your 10.5 install disc, but you upgraded from there to 10.5.8, which uses a different version of Mail. To get back to the correct version, you need to download the install the the 10.5.8 Combo Update.
If you have problems with an application, post the problem in as much detail here; don't start deleting and reinstalling things when it's not necessary.
