Problem reinstalling Mountain Lion MAcbook Air

I have a mid 2012 11 in Macbook air running Mountain Lion.  I had had no problems until yesterday when Chrom would not start.  Upon trying to restart the conmputer the process would not go beyond the grey screen with the spnning wheel.  I let this sit for 15 minutes or so, the tried rebooting 3 or 4 times, each time with the same result.  I then tried booting with command+r in order to try a cleaninstall of mountain lion.  this gave me an error when verifying the computer´s eligibility with Apple "could not find installation information for this machine.  contact apple care"
I then ran Disk Utility and Verify Disk showed no errors, but the repair disk permissions came back with several issues such as the following:
permissions differ on "system/library/frameworks/CoreGraphics.framework/CoreGraphics": should be lrwxrwxrwx : they are lrwxr-xr-x .
unable to ser owner and group on "system/library/frameworks/CoreGraphics.framework/CoreGraphics":  error 22: invalid argument
I then created a USB reinstall disk following instructions from Apple, started the computer using the option key to choose this disk as the start-up disk and got exactly the same results.
Finally, I tried to erase the HD and got a message saying "volume erase failed with the rror: couldn´t unmount disk.
Any ideas?

BTW, This only happens with the Time Capsule, I can connect to my iPhone in Hotspot and other WiFi Networks just fine.  And all of my other device connect to the Time Machine just fine as well.  It's just between the Air and the Time Machine.

  • After installing Mountain lion, macbook air 2011 very slow

After installation of Mountain lion my macbook air 2011 got very slow. There has been a firmware upgrade too. Can you help?

Hi guys! Just installed ML on my early 2009 MBAir (after market upgraded to a 240g SSD, but still just 2g of ram), and I panicked a bit at first when it turned out to be painfully slow and not displaying right (+slow trackpad!).
Bear in mind that the first thing ML will do is index your files for spotlight, which takes a while and is a bit of a resource hog that will slow everything else down and cause your machine to heat up.
I let it work all night, but by morning, my CPU usage was STILL at 100% and everything slow...
Activity monitor showed nothing over 10% CPU usage... First tip was to display ALL processes in Activity monitor, and not just MY processes, to see what exactly was sucking up my CPU!
Then, and it seems to often be the culprit on MBA's, it turned out that the kernel_task process was using up to 170% of my CPU usage (!). Problem is, that process sort of does a million things, so it can be hard to pinpoint the actual issue.
One of the things it does though, is work against overheating...
Given the download+install+indexing, my machine had been working all day and night, and was indeed getting super hot. Turning it off and letting it cool down for a whole fixed it all.
Kernel_task is back to normal, CPU usage is normal, display and trackpad are back to perfect. And in the end, ML is snappier than SL for me, even with the bare minimum in memory!
    Good luck! <3

  • How do I remotely access my Snow Leopard server from my Mountain Lion MacBook Air

Does anyone know of an idiot's guide to setting up a VPN to access my server? I'm running Snow Leopard server in the office and I'd like to be able to access the server, probably just from one computer (MacBook Air runnung Mountain Lion) from home.
I'm not sure if it complicates things or not, but the office is in an area with poor broadband and so the internet connection is via satellite broadband. The set up is a satellite modem into a Gigabit router and the server is connected to the router via an unmanaged switch.
As an aside, I'm considering changing this set up so that the modem plugs into a Time Capsule and the server will connect directly into the TC. The desktops will then run into the server via the unmanaged switch or wirelessly via TC - any thoughts on the best set up here? Are cables into a switch better/worse than using TC's wireless facility.
Is this something that I, as a reasonably competent computer operator but definitely not an IT expert, could do, or should I get someone in to set it up for me?
    Thanks in advance
    Jim

VPNs aren't particularly special or weird or secret or such.  They're "just" a network connection.  A sometimes very fussy network connection, but a network connection.
My preference is to use a firewall that includes an embedded VPN server.  This for several reasons, as it avoids trying to forward the VPN through a device that's using NAT [1], and it means you can connect to multiple devices on the target LAN, and you can connect even if the OS X Server box is down.
Other folks will forward the VPN through NAT, and use the VPN server that's available in various versions of OS X Server.
Forwarding a VPN through NAT does work, but can also sometimes not work.  NAT can cause some types of VPNs to get tossed off when (for instance) there's a second VPN connection arriving.
In various cases everything connects and works the first time, and in other cases it's trial-and-error.
With a VPN-capable firewall (which is a step above your average residential firewall), usually configuring the firewall as a L2TP server or the Cisco protocol, if you want to use the standard OS X or iOS clients.  Or PPTP — which is easier to get working — but less secure.  Once the firewall and the VPN server is set up — and that's where most of the "fun" is — then the set-up in Network Preferences is (usually) pretty simple.
There are thousands of OS X VPN set-up articles around, but the details all hinge on the particular VPN server, and whether you're going to try to push the VPN through (for instance) that Tome Capsule and its NAT.   Until you sort out your VPN target and/or VPN client, and what sort of attacks you're securing against...
As for this case, satellite latency is large.  The latency involved is the time it takes to the command or the text from your local Mac to the satellite ~35,786 kilometers up and then ~35,786 kilometers back down, and then the response back again.  That's about a quarter second, each way, at the speed of light.  Transferring big files is fine (once the connection is open and the transfer gets rolling), but anything interactive — such as a typical use of a VPN — is going to have a noticable lag.
Yes, it'll be easiest to get somebody to work through your requirements and expectations, and initially set this up for you.  Or you can use this as an opportunity to read about and learn more about IP routing and networking and VPNs, too.
[1] VPNs seek to ensure that the network connection is secure, and from a known client IP source address to the IP address of the target VPN server.  NAT explicitly obscures the network connections, and often has multiple client hosts located behind one IP address.   Put another way, the VPN and NAT software implementations are working at cross-purposes.

  • Problem reinstalling Mountain Lion OS! Urgent!

    Hey everyone,
I just got a macbook pro from work, i reformatted it because there was alot of useless sutff in it.
WHen i try to reinstall with internet recovery and chosen the mountain lion os it asks me for my apple id and password.
I have created the apple id and password 5 minutes ago and verified it.
When i try to install it says that my apple id is not active...
Could someone help me with this ? Its my first time using apple products and etc and have no idea why it doesnt work.
Any help will be appreciated !!
    Thank you.

Welcome. Glad you came over from the dark side.
I've had some similar issues with installs on my iPhones at times. Perhaps it's when the Apple servers get too busy. I'd just wait a few minutes and try again.
Go online to the Apple ID site and check that you have the ID and password correct. Apple - My Apple ID
If you have any other Apple hardware with this Apple ID (and perhaps a different password), sign out on them.
If none of that works I'd call Apple or go visit your local Geniuses at the Apple Store.

Same here. Internet speed is 15 Mbps constantly, but it takes 10 minutes to even watch an Apple movie trailer. My iPad, on the same network -- no problems.

  • How do I Reinstall Mountain Lion on a used Macbook Pro?

So I just recently purchased a 2011 Macbook Pro off of Craigslist.  A friend picked it up for me, installed an extra copy of Windows 8 he had for me under my name, and made sure the OSX Mountain Lion side worked fine.  Somehow, after the first time I restarted OSX it would no longer boot up, but Windows worked fine.  So I booted up in the recovery partition, reformatted the OSX partition, and attempted to install Mountain Lion.
The problem is that I don't have it listed under my Apple I.D. as purchased, which makes sense because the last Macbook I bought came with Leopard.  I tried to buy it on the Windows side through iTunes, but I'm not able.  So my question is can I just buy Mountain Lion on someone else's Mac through the App store under my I.D., and will I then be able to reinstall Mountain Lion through the recovery partition?
Or will I have to resort to resetting my Macbook Pro to factory defaults, losing the copy of Windows 8 I was given, and reverting back to the original OS, which I'm guessing is Lion?

Well, you need to log in to the App Store on a Mac, using your AppleID, and purchase Mountain Lion. Then, on the konked out Mac's Recovery Partition you'll be able to sign in with the same AppleID and download the ML installer you are now eligible to use.

  • Reinstall Mountain Lion on 13" macbook pro retina

hi! i am trying to reinstall mountain lion on my new 13" macbook pro retina, however, i cannot proceed and i encounter the message "We could not complete your purchase. OS X Mountain Lion is not compatible with this computer." please help!

I've called Apple Care and they learned me to the following in order to complete a clean install from Mountain Lion on a MacBook Pro Retina (otherwise it won't work): http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11273
But, like Clinton said, shouldn't your rMBP come with Moutain Lion on it? And if so, why can't you upgrade to 10.8.2 because I could (with software update) - but my problem was to clean reinstall ML on it from the App Store (that you stil can't do with a rMBP btw).
And a small question off-topic: How long is your (average) shutdown time on your rMBP 13"?

  • I'm unable to reinstall Mountain Lion OS X on my Macbook. What should I do?

I was given a MacBook Pro from a friend, but it was still left with everything on it. I started to restore it to factory settings so it would be wiped clean and I could use it as a new computer. Once I was about to reinstall Mountain Lion OS X, it notified me that I was unable to because "this Apple ID was not used to purchase Mountain Lion OS X." Im afraid that if I purchase it, it won't work because its linked to my friends Apple ID, and I'd be wasting $20. What should I do?

    sabrinapascual,
did you friend also give you two grey installation DVDs with the MacBook Pro? If not, you can purchase a replacement pair from Apple or iFixit. One of them has a bootable version of Mac OS X for your MacBook Pro, and the other one has its Apple Hardware Test and its iLife apps.

  • Reinstall mountain lion on macbook  retina

hey guys, I want to reinstall mountain lion on macbook retina. I've been having some bugs so want to see if a clean install would help. My hard disk is partitioned though.. I have a windows 7 boot camp partition, so would a reinstall of mountain lion delete or affect in any way my windows 7 partition ?
what are the steps to reinstalling mountain lion ? My macbook retina originally came with version 10.8 . I'm guessing all of my programs/apps on mountain lion  would be deleted with a fresh install ?

It should not. A backup is always a safe precaution though.

Try getting the free "Preference Manger" applicaiton from Digital Rebellion (dot com).  Use it to trash the FCP X preference files.  See if that helps.
Also, on the new Mac, go into the App Store, under the Store menu, make sure you are signed in.

  • My trackpad has problems with Mountain Lion

I have an IMac from the beginning of 2012, it had snow leopard on it. Since about one week, I updated to Mountain lion. Until here, everything ok.
I also have a MacBook Air from January 2011, with snow leopard on it. I wanted to sell my Mac Air, so I used the migration assistant to migrate my user from the Mac Air (that has snow leopard) to my iMac (that has mountain lion). It seemed to have worked perfectly yesterday. Today I turned on my iMac, after having sold already the Mac Air, and the user I migrated logged in automatically, and the trackpad or mouse both didn't work correctly. The cursor jumps by itself from one place to the other and won't let me do click anything on the status bar or the dock or on any window, which means I basically have no mouse. I've tried different mouses, plugging in and out, everything! Nothing works! It's driving me crazy, so I somehow managed to erase the new migrated user and lost all the data (that is the only new thing I had on the iMac, so I thought that that was the source of the problem), and restarted the iMac, and logged on with my usual user form the iMac, but the problem with the mouse persists and I can't do anything with the iMac! I though. About reinstalling mountain lion on the iMac, bu how can I do this without a mouse??? I don't have a cd, I downloaded it from the App Store. HEEEEEEEELP! :-s

I think the exact problem comes because I migrated a user from a Mac with snow leopard to a Mac with mountain lion. How can I fix this problem now? Reinstalling mountain lion?

  • How many times can you reinstall Mountain Lion?

Since I bought the Early 2013 15" MacBook Pro retina laptop used only 17 battery cycles on it now (2.7 with 16GB ram running Mt. Lion) computer I have not reset it. I spoke to Apple and it is registered in my name, I made a new Admin. account and password and Apple had me delete the original owners. I took off anything he had left on it. Applecare also I bought in my name. Apple said I didn't have to reset it and would be fine so I left it. They deauthorized the previous iunes account and the previous owner gave me his ID to deauthorize the computer. It was already deauthorized when I checked. He then changed his password for his security. It runs beautifully and has a Samsung screen.
I deleted the iLife apps and were going to buy them in my name (as his ID came up for updates) but now can't redownload in my name as it says I need Maverick OSon it to do so. I left the Mountain Lion 10.8.5 on it. If I contact Apple will they give me a redemption code for my name or how do I get older versions?
If I reset to new how many times am I able to reinstall Mountain Lion? If I decide to sell it later will I be able to reset it again with no problem for the new owner?
Thank you for your help. This forum is a source for many of us new owners to solve things.

As long as you do the download with your Apple ID, it'll be in your name. Reverting back can be a little involved. If you have that in mind, you should make a full backup of your clean install of ML and save it somewhere. Then you can just copy the image back with Carbon Copy Cloner. External drives are cheap, that's how I'd do it.

  • How do I reinstall Mountain Lion in English on a system that was originally in Chinese?

I'm trying to help a friend who was given a used 13" MacBook Air (A1369) by the Chinese exchange student staying with him. It needed a screen repair, which was done, and we were able to change the display menus to English which is fine for general use. BUT... The previous owner had all kinds of Chinese games and programs as well as a partitioned HD. The plan was to just erase and reinstall Mountain Lion (which it came with, we THINK) and he'd have a fresh start.
Using the Recovery system would be great, except that since the comp was from China, and the ID associated with it is in Chinese, all of the instructions, menus and EVERYTHING are in Chinese. We can get online fine, and tried booting from a USB drive but everything is still in Chinese. We got as far as making a bootable USB and it looked like everything was OK, and started the erase/restore process but it got stuck in Chinese instructions and menus!!!
Is there a way to buy new copy of Mountain Lion with a new Apple ID that will be in English and then install it on a computer that was already running Mountain Lion? It seems I should be able to DL the OS to a USB drive and then just boot and install from that. But I'd have to DL on another Mac with its own ID running Lion. (Or use a Linux PC which seems like an even worse option.)
    Any ideas? Suggestions? Laughter?

Try posting again in the forum for ML, since it hardly seems to have anything to do with your hardware.

  • Problems with Mountain Lion – Dock has gone and also clicking trackpad no longer works.

    Hi,
I’m not sure how best to explain the problem I am having but here goes anyway…I have a Macbook pro (mid 2009 model) and recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.  Everything seemed to be working ok and I was enjoying trying to work out all the new features. However yesterday when I switched the Macbook on, once it had started some strange things were happening. Firstly my dock at the bottom had disappeared. Normally this is at the bottom of the screen however this no longer the case. I used the keyboard shortcut to show the dock however when I do this, the dock appears but none of the icons increase in size when I hover over them (as used to happen).
The other thing that is happening is that I cannot click on anything to open or select an option. For example, I can’t click on anything on the dock (when I can get the dock to show) to open an application, I cannot select from drop down lists etc (ie select file then software updates). Even when I switch off my Macbook I can only hit return for the shutdown mode, and cannot select one of the other options, for example restart.  I tried to re-install Mountain Lion by holding down command and R (I think  - I read this on another forum and followed the instructions) however when the Macbook restarted and the various options came up, one of which is to re-install the software, I couldn’t select anything to do this due to this track pad problem I have explained (probably badly!) above.
I should point out that everything was fine for a few days after upgrading to Mountain Lion and then the above problems started.
Can anyone help?  I’m pretty stressed with the whole thing as I can’t use my Macbook now and am worried it’s permanently broken!!
Or am I better just taking it along to the genius bar at my local Apple store?
    Thanks in advance.

Not the same symptoms, but I noticed that after a few days of running great, odd things started happening on my iMac. The first thing was that when I would boot the Mac up for the first time in the morning, it would boot into single user mode. I have the Apple Bluetooth keyboard, so I know there's no way keys are being held down.
The other symptom was that Microsoft Outlook 2011 would hang on launch. It would get stuck on the "Setting Up Identities..." phase. Rebuilding the Outlook database would help until the next time I shut the iMac down.
Also a couple of times it got to the Desktop after a boot, but not everything was working correctly and some startup items didn't load.
The iMac also kept booting into single user mode on the first boot.
I tried reinstalling Mountain Lion, and I thought that fixed both problems, until the next morning. Now I just don't shut the Mac down. I can close Outlook, and it launches in a couple of seconds.
So it would appear that something is becoming corrupt when OS X is shut down. If I don't shut it down, it's fine.
