Problem renaming column in Management Studio 2012

After importing spreadsheet data with no column headings, I notes that SSMS provided column names like [Column 1] that contain a space. I think that is strange considering that SQL Server does not particularly like column names that include spaces. I don't
like column names with spaces because when trying to create ad hoc queries just to analyze data, it becomes necessary to enclose those names in brackets...a real pain.
So I began renaming columns using the Table Designer in SSMS. I had another spreadsheet open with the column names I wished to use. So I selected and copied from the spreadsheet and tried to paste the new name into the designer. That new name did not appear
after the paste, so I copied again and pasted. Still no visible name in the designer. So I tried typing it in manually. After saving the change I see that new column name had become the name i wanted but repeated 3 times and concatenated? The column name I
wanted was REGN_NUM. the saved name is REGN_NUM
REGN_NUM
REGN_NUM
REGN_NUM.
I just copied that new name from the Object Explorer and notice that line breaks are included. What is going on here?
I just tried to rename that column again in the Object Explorer interface by right-clicking the column and clicking rename. I back-spaced out the visible letters and then pressed the delete key several times just in case there were trailing line feeds. During
the renaming there looks to be the name I want in place before I click out of the rename input field. But low and behold, the quadruplicated name again appears. Huh? So I went to the next column, went through the renaming process by typing the new name in,
and that one saved properly.
Does anyone know what might be happening here?
Thanks in advance for any replies.

>After importing spreadsheet data with no column headings,
How did you import it?  Use the SSIS Import/Export Wizard, column names can be assigned:

  • How do I load an SSIS package created in Visual Studio 2012 Shell (Integrated) onto SQL Server 2012 using SQL Management Studio 2012

I am fairly new to this whole process of working with the Microsoft development environment.  Here is what I have to work with:
an NT server running Microsoft SQL 2012  - Microsoft SQL Server Standard (64-bit)  11.0.2100.60
and on my laptop (all freebie downloads):
SQL Server Management Studio 2012            ver 11.0.2100.60
Visual Studio 2012 Express  for Desktop Development and
    Visual Studio 2012 Shell (Integrated)
I was able to create an SSIS package in
2012 Shell (Integrated).  It takes a flat file and imports it into an SQL database table.  It runs successfully from within the
    2012 Shell (Integrated) envrionment.
But I am having trouble figuring out how to set this up on the 2012 SQL Server.  I see that one of my colleagues created an Integration Services Catalog,
and using SQL Management Studio I was able to create a folder under that called DigLic.  But when I go to the Projects subfolder of DigLic and attempt to import my SSIS package, I get an error message:
"To launch the Integration Services Deployment wizard, one of the components: Integration Services, Management Tools - Basic or Business Intelligence Development Studio has to be installed by the SQL Server
2012 Standard, Enterprise, Developer, or Evaluation Edition.  To install a component, run SQL Server Setup and Select the component name"
I realize that Express Versions of Visual Studio lack the full feature set of a professional version.  But am I wrong in assuming that owning a server version of SQL Server 2012 gives us license to a professional
version of SQL Management Studio 2012?  If so, how would I go about getting this software component installed?  And I am not clear if this is something that needs to be installed on our SQL Server or if I simply need a professional version of SSMS
    loaded on my laptop.
I work for a company that is fairly fractured in its repsonsibilities, so I would need to know exactly what to ask for if I need to track down any licenses that I might need and if I need to have any specific software installed on our SQL server or on my
    laptop.
All helpt would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Arthur,
Thank you for your reply.  But at this point, one of my points of confusion is what software I have available to me.  I wish I had a useful central help desk to call up and just say, "Hey, load me up with all of the professional version(s) of Visual
Studio.  But I do not know what we have license to.  And I kind of need to know what the options are, so that I can ask a specific question of our vast buracracy.
For now, I have downloaded only free versions of Visual Studio client software.  Since my company does have servers running Microsoft SQL Server, I am going to assume that we have proper licensing for those servers.  But does that server license
allow me to get any professional versions of the PC client software for the various Visual Studio(s) 2012?
And if I get a professional version of Visual Studio 2012, does that do away with the three different flavors that I have right now?  I have 2012 versions of SQL Server Management Studio, Visual Studio Express, and Visual Studio Shell (Integrated).
    Your feedback is much appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Why SQL services is dont start in configuration manager studio 2012

I finished installing SQL server Management Studio 2012 and that of configuration management studio.
When I wanted to log in did not find server name, and I tried <pc name>\SQLEXpress, still did not work.
So checked configuration management studio and I noticed that usually we see arrow type button (like "play " button) on the picture of CPU beside word- SQL server services on configuration management studio, was not seen.
is it the reason why it SSMS don't find Server name?
I freshly install SSMS, did I miss to install something?
    Please help... Thanks

Also, did you install Express edition, if so, Express edition does not have sql Server agent service but you will see that in the configuration manager with Stop button kind of thing and you cannot start that,o do not worry about it
A more appropriate description would be
Express edition has SQL Server agent code inbuilt but is disabled by edition restriction. It is there because when you upgrade SQL Express to Enterprise or Standard Upgrade just need to enable that code to bring Agent services it saves itself from hassle
of writing a code for agent.

  • Deploy SQL Management Studio 2012 through SCCM

    Hello,
Has anyone successfully deployed SQL Management Studio 2012 with SCCM?
    A couple of specific questions:
    - Which folder from the SQL Media is required to ensure that only Management Studio deploys (we would like to limit the size of the deployment Package)?
    - What command line options do we need to use to install the Advanced version of Management Studio with all of the Tools and Books Online.  I have found the following but there is not a clear distinction about what is required and what is optional:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144259.aspx
    - Can someone confirm the following command line options for machine that has 2008 R2 Management Studio on it?
    Setup.exe /q /ACTION=upgrade /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS /FEATURES=Tools
    - Can someone confirm the following command line options for a new installation of 2012 Management Studio?
    Setup.exe /q /ACTION=Install /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS /FEATURES=Tools
    - Do I need to use /PID for the product key if I am only installing Management Studio?
    Thank you,
    Matt

    Hello,
I had a couple of failed upgrades involving SSMS while testing on one of my laptops with a Hyper-V machine. I couldn’t blog about it because I couldn’t find the reason myself. I ended uninstalling the tools on SQL Server 2008 R2, and then proceeding with the
upgrade. Both issues occurred with RC0. I used Hyper-V snapshots to create restore points.
Besides that I had some issues enabling .NET Framework on Windos Server 8 using the GUI. However, enabling .NET Framework from the command prompt works perfectly.
    Hope this helps.

I'm getting that error when I select "Edit Top 200 Rows" on a table. The SMSS will crash. This is running on Windows server 2012 R2. Is there a fix, SP update, something? I did not have this problem on Windows Server 2012.

    Hi Lee,
According to your description, it is a known issue that has been submitted to Microsoft. I recommend you voting in the following connect items, your feedback is valuable for us to improve our products and increase the level of service provided.
    http://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedbackdetail/view/952483/getting-error-when-right-click-table-of-sql-server-2014-db-and-click-edit-to-200-rows-in-ssms-2012

Additionally, I also reproduce the same error message as yours when using SSMS 2012 to connect  to SQL Server 2014 database on Windows Server 2008 R2  and selecting "Edit Top 200 Rows".
To work around this issue, as Shanky’s post, please use SSMS 2014 to connect  to SQL Server 2014, then you can use the "Edit Top 200 Rows" feature. Or you can write T-SQL to edit data from SQL Server 2014 database in SSMS 2012.

  • Don't have permission to do anything in SQL Management Studio 2012

I have installed SQL Server 2012 with SQL Management Studio on Windows 7 Enterprise SP1.  When I log into Studio, it won't let me do anything other than view.  I am using Windows Authentication and am logged in as a domain user with local admin
rights.  I installed SQL with this same account.  If I try to use SQL Authentication, I can't figure out the default password for "sa".  Any ideas as to how to get access to this so I can create new databases from within Studio?

I am using express.  Should I try developer instead?  I should mention that I also have whatever version of SQL Server Express came with my Visual Studio 2013 when I installed it.
    Express should work fine.
When you install SQL Server, there is a screen where you are supposed to enter a Windows user that is to have sysadmin permissions. There is a button "Add Current User" which is convenient.
On the same screen you can also specify that you want to have SQL Server authentication enabled, and in this case you must specify the sa password. That is, there is no default password.
Now, I don't install Express Edition very often, but I seem to recall that the Express install by default skips some of the screens unless you press an "Advanced" button along the way. The screen I'm talking about may be one them. But in
that case, I would expect the user under which you ran the install to be added as sysadmin.

  • Management Studio 2012 Slow As Molasses

I have seen other posts before about previous versions from 2008 R2 to 2005. I have used both and never had problems. I am now running Windows 8 x64 and just installed SQL Management Studio Ent x64 SP1 CU3. I don't have any problems
opening MS, but my problems are specifically for example when I right-click on a database in order to
see the menu to click on Properties, it first does nothing for a few good seconds, and them the mouse turns into a circle that rotates for a few more seconds, and then finally does the menu appear so I can click on properties.
Then, after clicking on properties, it takes a few more good seconds until the menu itself opens up so I can change the DB's settings.
I also noticed that when I opened a query file which I saved, until the window will open, and after I click on the
Execute button to execute the query until it opens also lags for a few seconds.
    I have tried already to:
    - Change the IE settings for certificate revocation
    - Modify my hosts file for crl.microsoft.com
But neither of them helped, and they also seem to be referring to a specific problem where MS doesn't open fast. By me it does.
Compatibility Mode + changing UAC as was recommended in another post didn't work at all as I couldn't even open MS.
I have tried changing the new display/graphics settings in the Options which didn't help. Nor did deleting the settings for MS stored in my user profile.
    Please help,
    Reuvy

    Hi,
It may be a silly question: how much memory and what kind of CPU do you have? (For example my laptop has 32GB RAM and a Core i7 CPU and never seen this issue. ;-) )

    Hi Mahesh,
Could you please install the Microsoft Windows Software Development Kit (SDK) as dave’s post? Below is the download link for the latest release of SDK.

  • SQL Management Studio 2012, App-V

Hi. I'd like to know why SSMS 2012 hasn't been made compatible with App-V 4.6 or 5. I can't find a App-V recipe document on any of Aaron Parker's sites. Also, I have attempted to package this application myself however I have run into issues.
Please advise. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Curtis

What are the issues? I'd suggest describing your environment and sequencing steps to get any meaningful feedback.

  • Installing SQLServer Management Studio 2012 - Windows 8.1

I've tried several download sources trying to get a DB instance installed (works fine), however, getting an executable SSMS eludes me.  Saw lots of explanations of how to install it; they don't end up producing a tool I can run.  Anyone with
either a link that will work, or the caveat I need to follow to get functional SSMS on Windows 8.1 would be appreciated.

First please give information about what version of SQL Server SSMS you are trying to install. Again you did not give any information about error ? Unless you give complete information it would be difficult for us to provide you correct answer.
Please edit your question and add more information
