Problem Rendering/Encoding

It seems like this is a very common problem. I built a movie in iMovie and exported it to iDVD. I built the entire DVD and when I try to burn the disk it stops at encoding the menus. I cannot even get to the burning part. I have changed the photos and video in the drop zones and that does not help. I also moved the project from my external HD to the startup disk. Nothing seems to work.
Thanks for any help you can give

If there are no warnings or exclamation marks while in map view, then please drag and drop this item to the trash and restart your mac (use the finder to locate this item/s):
com.apple.iDvd.plist
Also please run apple's disc utility and repair permissions at this time.
After permissions are repaired, shut down your mac. Disconnect any ext. 3rd party devices (ie, ext HD's etc. ) Power back up.....then please try your iDvd project one more time.

• Idvd burning problems during rendering/encoding

I have made several attempts to burn a dvd and when it gets to "step2: Menu and slideshow redering and encoding..." it never goes anywhere. If I cancel the process I get and error "error during rendering/encoding. there was an error during rendering/encoding of the menus/slideshows. Burning process aborted." The project is a 4 minute slideshow of pictures (jpegs) with one itunes imported song. The entire project was created in idvd and is no larger than 200megs. I have tried to burn this project on 3 different macs (2 G5s and a G4 powerbook) and they all have the same error so it must mean that I am doing something wrong. I have previewed the slideshow and it has no problems and am burning DVD-R's (tried a few different ones).

with one itunes imported song
Was this a iTunes Store purchased song?

• Error during rendering/encoding -- PLEASE HELP!!

Hey everybody!! After trying twice to burn this project to DVD, I'm about ready to rip my hair out!! First of all, here's the specifics about my computer:
Mac OS 10.3.7 / 800 MHZ Power PC G4 / 256 MB SDRam / My programs are iMovie 4 and I have iDVD5
OK, I'm trying to burn a movie that is about 1 hour, 23 minutes long. Even though my movie is not 90 minutes long, iDVD does tell me that it is too long and that I need to click on "Best Performance" in my iDVD Preferences. No problem, I did that. (By the way, at the time of the burning, I have about 5.1 GB on space left on my hard drive.)
Before burning I do repair permissions and delete my "com.apple.idvd.plist".
So, it burns and burns for roughly 6 hours. Right at the very end, the disk spits out and an error message comes up saying:
Encoding Video
Error during rendering/encoding:
This is very frustrating because I need to get this video done by tonight and turn it in by Monday morning!!
Any suggestions?? Please help!!! Thanxx!!

I have about 5.1 GB on space left on my hard drive
I don't think that's enough. Remember a DVD is 4.7GB (which iDVD first stores on your hard drive) plus temporary files that iDVD needs.

• I repeatedly get "error during rendering/encoding of menus/slideshow" message.  This process is the same on my iMac, MacBook and another iMac.  I have been burning dvd's int he same way for the past 12 months using the exact same steps successfully.

I keep getting "error during rendering/encoding of menus/slideshows" message.  I have been burning DVD's in exactly the same way for the past 12 months and mostly on my MacBook which is 3 years old.  Obviously I'm using iDVD.  I purchased an iMac about a year ago and moved to use this for dvd burning without problem.  A few months ago (approximately) I started to experience problems with burning with the error message above.  I tried everything including starting the whole process from scratch right down to capturing the movie clips from my video recorder into iMovie, then using them in iDVD.  Still the same message came up.  I lost count of how many times I repeated the process with different clips and variations and the same thing happened.  This was also the case with my MacBook and my husband's iMac.
After taking both of mymac's tothe service centre, having new optical thingys put it and even a new hard drive on my iMac along with a new DVD burner the same thing happened.  They told me it must be the process that I am using that is incorrect!
I took my 27" iMac to an apple shop and asked them to assist me while I use the same technique as I always had.  The same message came up so they tried using my clips in one of their mac's.  The same message. They tried it with different clips and the same message.  The only way we could get theirs to work was with a magic DVD which did not produce what I needed and was limited with only one page.
I now cannot use any of my Mac's for the intended purpose that I bought them for - to produce good media for my work!  It was suggested that I purchase some non Mac software to burn DVDs which defeats the object of having a mac with iDVD in my opinion.  I have a book on iDVD which is very informative and have followed the process to the letter and checked all the trouble shooting and still no remedy.  It was mentioned that an up-date may have caused the problem on all my macs.
I feel that this issue should be addressed by Apple as a matter of correctness.
I now find that on the net there are many posts in forums and such like with exactly the same (almost word for word) problems.  Please Apple, keep/regain your good name and sort this out.

Thanks Bengt W for your attention to this matter.  So much appreciated.  And thanks for putting me right on the aim of forums (new to this).  Although, you may regret asking for more information.  I've added everything I can below.
The process I used is as follows:
Import recorded clips of between 5 and 15minutes each from my video recorder into i
Edit the clips (remove unwanted start and endng)
Add title to front of clips
‘Share’ them to ‘movie’ (export using QuickTime)folder in .mov format individually
Open iDVD and ‘create new project’
Select ‘favourite’ theme that I have set up forall my work dvd’s (this has been used successfully many times and I’ve triedwithout using the favourite them).
Add 2 submenus for each group of clips
Select submenu  - drag and drop between 3 – 6 clips in each of the twosubmenus
Change title colours on clips
Dragand drop image into drop zones where required
In‘map’ view I check for any yellow warnings before burning to disc
In an attempt to remedy the problems I’ve tried the following:
Try new DVD discs
Try different themes (favourites and standardones)
Change images in drop zones
Start whole process again even from importingfrom camera again
Two other completely different computers (iMacand MacBook) with iDVD
Go to apple shop and use their computers to doin iDVD
Try with one clip and no menu pages added
Use a clip that I already have that did notoriginate from my camera
Turn computer off and restart
New hard drive
New optical lense (thing)
New DVD burner
Saving to disc image rather than dvd disc
Other points:
I also have a ‘flip’ and ‘iPhone’ whereI’ve imported footage camera which, although limited, records and makes videoclips and burns them to DVD through iDVD without problem.
For example, I have just gone through steps 5 - 11 using some clips that were already imported from my iphone to iPhoto and dragged across.  I used a theme that I've used before which has failed and added one sub menu page where the clip went.  It burned to disc image successfully.
The startup disc, I believe will have no space issues asit’s a new hard drive with no use apart from this.  That could have been an issue before (I didn’t check it) butnot now.
Other technical stuff that I don't understand but you may:

• Error message during burning: Error during rendering/encoding

Hello,
I am using iDVD 6.0.2 to create a DVD. I have pictures and videos. The videos are in .ASF format and they are played on Quicktime on my computer.
Anyway, when I go to burn the DVD, it goes through the slideshow fine. But then, once it starts videos, it stops and the following error message shows up:
Encoding Video
Error during rendering/encoding
I am using a Memorex DVD-R (8x, 4.7 GB, 120 min video) dvd. Is there any way possible I can fix this problem? I really need this DVD soon. Thank you so much.

Best Buy and Office Depot carry Verbatim by me. Use only DVD-R, not DVD+R.
My guess is that .ASF file...........
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save as Disc Image...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

• Error in rendering/encoding in iDVD v 7.1.2 with MacMini & music in intro not playing

I am having some difficulty in creating a DVD in iDVD.  I've created  50+ home DVDs before, but now I am getting this error message every time:
Error in rendering/encoding
"There was an error during rendering/encoding of the menus/slideshows. The burning process has been canceled."
My process is the same every time:
1.  I use iMovie and export the movie,
2.  Add it into a new iDVD project, add music etc.
3. Click Burn
I have cleared the iDVD cache, tried to recreate the project several times, tried to save the project as a disc image or video_ts folder and get the same error every time.
Additionally, I cannot get any music from itunes to play in the intro.  I've tried music from itunes purchases and music i've added via my cds.  I've never had an issue either playing in the intro before.
I am wondering if my DVD burner gave out.  If so, is there a way to check that?  Can I create the DVD image up to the point of burning and use homesharing to burn onto another Mac in the house (none of them have iDVD, but all can burn)?
Help!
Janetta

What version of iMovie are you using and how are you exporting out of iMovie to iDVD?
Where is your iTunes library located.  Some have reported problems with getting iTunes tracks to play when the library was on an external HD.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If you can create a disk image of the project that will play with DVD Player then we've narrowed down the problem to the burn process.
Can you burn a DVD data disk via the finder?

• Error in rendering/encoding

I am trying to burn my DVD, but keep getting an error, "Error during rendering/encoding." I tried repairing permissions in disk utility, but the same problem keeps occurring.

Preferences
Root level = Macintosh HD / Users/ "Your account" / Library / Preferences
and is named com.apple.iDVD.plist
There are two libraries - and it is in this one in Your account the pref file that
needs to be trashed is located.

• Error in rendering/encoding menus

iDVD 7.0.4 is giving me errors when I go to burn:
Error during rendering/encoding
There was an error during rendering/encoding of the menus/slideshows. The burning process has been canceled.
The project has one movie created by iMovie. The menu has one movie in a drop zone published to the Media Browser from iMovie in the Medium size. I've also tried replace the movie with a static image and got the same problem. I've tried switching to other templates. The movie has 3 chapter markers named simply 1, 2, and 3. The movie name has hyphens, which should be completely legal. If they aren't, someone at Apple needs their butt whooped. I've tried trashing iDVD's prefs file, repairing permissions, and rebooting.

Apple does have a tech support line but it is fee based if your mac falls outside the 90 day to 12 month warranty period unless you also purchased extended care / applecare. Is your mac by any chance under warranty?
If not then users like you and I make up the slack where apple leaves off as you worded above. Let's keep your question or post active to see if others have further recommendation. The good news is that most of these issues are resolved in time by other users who also have had similar issues and are now aware of how to resolve them.

• An "error during rendering/encoding" message

• Error message: Error During Rendering / Encoding

Greetings,
I have used iDVD in the past without problems on my macbook pro. Now it seems there is no way to make it work! I get this error everytime: "Error During Rendering/Encoding" the error is in the menu/slideshows, but I see that it never gets past the menu item on the list of things it is working on. I have tried going to the older menus and no luck. It says that the burning process has been cancelled. Any ideas?????
Thanks!

Hooray! I got it... I used what you said and this other post (below) helped as well. Is there a way to remove the apple logo from the menu page?
Here is the other post that helped as well:
I was having the same problem yesterday and researched all the solutions in the Forum. I wasn't experiencing the problem with burning to a disc, because I was trying to burn a disc image, so the variable of "better" versus "best" disc wasn't a factor. I did three simple things that I read about, after I tried four times and received the "Multiplexor Error" thing. One, I deleted encoded assets (Advanced > Delete Encoded Assets). Two, I trashed the iDVD preference file (home > library > preferences > com.apple.iDVD.plist), but only after I closed the iDVD application. Three, and maybe this stupid little glitchy thing made a difference, I deleted from the title and scene headings all characters other than letters of the alphabet and numbers. I have a few "&"'s and "/"s in there and maybe a few other little lazy short-cut things. Sort of a Microsoft thing, but maybe that was the trick. So, this morning the Disc Image was created, I've burned several DVD's (Magnavox DVD-R), they work on my Sony Blu-Ray player and all is happyland today.

• Can't Burn DVD - keep getting "Error during rendering/encoding"...Help!

I have a new IMac computer with Leopard and I'm having problems burning DVDs. I created a project using IDVD and have audio and pictures (imported individually from Iphoto) that I created into slideshows. I'm try to burn my final copy and continue to receive the "Error during rendering/encoding" message. I looked at earlier threads and saw some people had success when saving it first to a disk image however when I attempted to do that I received the same error. I know I have plenty of memory space since this project is very small. Please let me know if you have any ideas!!
Thanks!

Hi,
I have a new mac with Leopard since a week, and I had the same problem ("error during rendering / encoding..."). This happened when burning to a disk image.
I tried a lot of things :
* very small project
* create a new user
* put pictures in a folder, and not drag them from iphoto
* change the theme
I still had the same problem.
The last thing I tried was to put all the files used by idvd on the hard disk (instead of of an external firewire disk).
It worked ! (with the small size project).
I'm trying to burn the large project again...
I will tell you if it succeeds...
Best regards,
Nicolas

Hi
This Q is close to - Something is wrong. What's it ?
You have to supply much more info to be able to start guessing.
• What material was used ? Video codec, Audio file format and Photo file format
• Free space on Start-Up hard disk. How much ?
• Brand of DVD used ?
• Type of DVD used ?
• Burn speed set down or not ?
• Version of iMovie, iDVD'11 v 7.1.2 (OK), QuickTime and Mac OS ( X.6.8 I read ? )
And all extra info You can supply - that set's us on track.

• I've tried everything-I still get error during rendering/encoding using iDVD

I have a iMac Intel core duo (2005) with OSX10.4.11 and iDVD vers.7.04, 2 gigs of RAM and 56Gigs of free HD space. I can't burn a 3 slide slideshow to DVD without getting rendering/encoding error. I can't save a Disk Image file nor a Video TS folder. I have tried deleting the iDVDplaylist to trash. I have repaired permissions from install DVD. I have also logged on as new user with same results. I've tried using different themes and I have also tried from scratch using Magic iDVD. The built-in dvd burner works fine with regular files so I am confidant it works OK. This is the first time I have used iDVD and all slides are from the media pane and there are no errors in map view. Can anybody help!!!!

Hi
Did You in iDVD - Turn on TV-Safe area ?
Anything goes beyound this - OR EVEN Touching IT ! ? - It must not.
Titles and Chapter names (on menus) - Only A to Z and 0 to 9 - NO OTHER letters as : - ; .  etc.

• My mac Mini has problem rendering images and video

THE PROBLEM:
My mac mini has problem rendering JPEG image. There are strips on the images. Other images such as GIF, PNG, TIFF, and BMP are displayed nicely.
The images shown in the links below illustrate the problem:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/terencewong/71481156/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/terencewong/73360989/
(Please note that this image is grabbed from my faulty Mac Mini and saved into TIFF. For uploading purpose, I converted it into JPEG on ANOTHER computer.)
For movies, AVI can be playback without problem. But when it is converted to MPEG, it looks like an untunned TV channel.
FIXES TRIED:
I did erase and install 3 to 4 times using both the install disc and my Tiger Family Pack. All ended up with strips on the JPEG images and the generated MPEG movies.
I've also tried to flash the firmware to 113-xxxxx-124 using ATI's october 2005 universal ROM update, however, the ROM Revision shown in System Profiler is still 113-xxxxx-116 no matter how many time I reboot the system.
INVESTIGATION:
Yesterday, I did some research and got to know that JPEG and MPEG are using DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) for decompression. And the ATI Radeon 9200 chip provide such a transform on hardware basis, which free the CPU from doing something else. Feel free to point out my inaccuracy.
HARDWARE SPECIFICATION:
I bought the Mac Mini in the last Februray.
The system Boot ROM version is: 4.8.9f1
Display card is ATI Radeon 9200
Chipset Model: ATY,RV280
Revision ID: 0x0001
ROM Revision: 113-xxxxx-116
A POSSIBLE CONCLUSION:
I suspect that it is this part of the chip (the DCT) that is faulty.
Anyone know how to fix this problem?
Many thanks!

Assuming that your display is tightly connected, thus the problem is not caused by something as simple as that, the fact that a full erase and install has not removed the problem would, I think, point to this being a hardware issue, and given that everyone's mini (with the possible exception of some of the latest ones) has the same video chipset as yours, and do not suffer the problem that you appear to, it seems very likely that your mini has a fault which is in need of repair.
If you have an Apple Store nearby, I would take it there to have it checked out - at the very least they should be able to replicate your problem using an in-store display, and if not, thusly suggest it's something external to the mini and concerning your display or something very unusual in the immediate environment of the mini. If you don't have an Apple Store in reach, I'd take the system to an Apple authorized service provider since at the present time it is under warranty.
