Problem replacing a Mac Pro disk drive

Yesterday, I received a pair of 500GB SATA drives for my Mac Pro and one 1.5GB SATA drive. I installed the two 500GB drives in slots 3 and 4 in my Mac Pro yesterday to install a fresh copy of Snow Leopard and than clone it to the second 500GB drive. No problem there at all. I am booted onto one of those disk drives now.
Unfortunately, I am having a hard time installing the 1.5GB drive. I want to install it in slot 2, but for the life of me, I cannot get the sled's slider lock to unlock. It is on the orange color and it will not slide at all. Just for the heck of it, I tried sliding the locks on slots 3 and 4 where I put the other two drives yesterday and they are also stuck.
Why were the sliders working fine yesterday, but today they are stuck? How can I replace the drive in slot 2 now? I am stumped as to why this was fine yesterday, but not now. I didn't even touch slot 2 yesterday.
I want to install that 1.5GB drive to use it for Time Machine backups. I was going to try a pair of plyers, but I am concerned that I might do some damage.
Any advise on how to fix this perplexing problem will be appreciated.

The door latch is what 'unlocks' the sleds.
Drive bay #1 can be difficult.
Sounds like it wasn't closed properly yesterday or you didn't pull the latch all the way out and up.

  • 2006 model Mac Pro disk drive

I recently put a 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black disk drive into my 1st Gen Mac Pro. I believe I am now having problems with it. I am thinking about getting it replaced, but I want to make sure this drive is OK in this computer. I know originally the specifications said the drive bays would only support up to 750GB drives. Seems like what I read said you could put 1TB drives in, so I went ahead and did it. Is there someone who is 100% certain that 1TB drives are OK in this system?

I have a couple in mine, 1st gen. But I always zero erase and do other tests before I put it into use.
Apple... never updates or changes their spec sheets to show disk drive capacity, newer graphics cards, or where higher density RAM is "supported" or works.
750GGB was the largest known at the time. Same when the G5 came out and 250GB at that time.

  • 2013 Mac Pro Disk drive strategies...

I'm trying to figure out a reasonable disk drive solution before I order a new Mac Pro.
I currently have a 2008 Mac Pro with 2-1 tb SSD drives. One of them is the boot drive with the OS and apps, the other has my user directory. There's also some external drives for backup and other uses. This layout has worked well for many years because, as we all know, you can never have enough space for your user directory. Video and audio take up a lot of space.
But now with the options for the new Mac Pro, I'm not sure about the best way to duplicate what I have now. I've already assumed that I'm going to order it with the 1 tb flash drive option, but then what should I do with my user directory? I guess it's going to have to be external, and probably larger than 1 tb, but what?
    Any suggestions?

Maybe I am just too cheap, but I look at that OWC setup with a ThunderBolt to eSATA, and for US$229 (empty), you get a two-drive ThunderBolt-adapted enclosure. That has a lot more appeal than US$1400 for a Promise enclosure.
    Thunderbolt made affordable...
    OWC MercuryElite Pro+
    Lacie ThunderbolteSATA Adapter
    RAID Ready | eSATA x 2
They are also showing a new (not yet available) two-drive enclosure with dual ThunderBolt and USB-3, coming soon.

  • Why my Mac Pro hard drive noise and too slow?

Why my Mac Pro hard drive noise and too slow? Totally 8 gb speed system but now very slow . Please give some suggestions

Another thing you can do in Lion (and ML) is click on the "Info" button in Disk Utility to get the SMART status of the drive. It's more detailed now than it used to be and it might tell you if something is wrong.
A lot can go wrong with a hard drive which is why I tend to point people to the downloads section of the following web site:
    http://scsc-online.com
They have a free hard drive troublleshooting download book there. I reccommend people download that before asking questionis because there are tons of problems that can act like hard drive problems when there's nothing wrong with the system at all. For example, how full is the drive? How many applications are running? What's the status of Spotlight indexing? How many apps are you running? How much memory do you have?
I could probably think up 20 or 30 more if needed.

  • Problem between a Mac Pro / 01-2007 and ATI Radeon X1900XT

    Hello,
My friend has bought a second hand ATI Radeon X1900XT with a fan Zalmann Fatality VC-ZV9 and has the following problems. She can switch on her computer without any problem and the card works fine (Photoshop, ...) As soon as she launches Secondlife client, the screen gets black few minutes after, and if she tries to switch off and on the screen, it says "No signal" anologic or digital. This card is reported to work very well with Secondlife. It can't be overheat, since it comes very quickly, and just after the crash, she can touch the card which is not hot. The fan works fine. How can I investigate to find out what goes wrong with this card ? Her computer is a Mac Pro bought in January 2007 with 3 Gb RAM and Leopard. The problems has occured before 10.5.3 version of Leopard was installed. I've made a test of the Video Memory with Techtool Deluxe and it didn't find any problem.
    Thank you

I think I'm having a similar problem: running a Mac Pro/ATI Radeon X1900XT. Was having issues with general artifacts that seemed to come and go randomly. The machine got very hot one day when the AC was not on and the office was closed: random artifact "pixel dots" became lines on the screen, and then the entire screen just went black.
I had to do a hard shut down, and it's happened several times since. When I pulled the ATI card out, there was considerable dust built up at the intake which I cleaned out. It hasn't blacked out again, but the artifacts remain on the screen.
I suspect the card is about to die, but was trying to see if anyone else had this experience? Also, if anyone recommends replacing it with the same card, or if there is a better recommendation? I do general design and photo editing, no gaming and nothing very intense.
    Thanks for the help!!

  • Mac Pro Hard Drive Connectors

I need to replace the two screws that hold the hard drive connectors to the Mac Pro.
Does anyone know where I can begin to find these? They are two small black screws.
The previous owner of my Mac Pro removed them so that he could attach an SSD drive loosely to the Mac Pro.
I'm going to replace the SSD drive, as it failed, and it comes with a 3.5" tray that should attach to the Mac Pro hard drive carrier, but when I push it back in to align up with the hard drive connector, since he removed the screws, it doesn't align up and go in without me manually connecting it. I'd like to get it back to the way it was with the screws.
So...I wonder what part number that is or how I can get those two little screws, the exact ones?
    Any advice would be great.
    Thanks.

Yeah there are two models for this Icy Dock SSD Kit...I think I want the screwless version.
MB882SP-1S-2B - uses screws to mount the drive and has more ventilation for a moving parts 2.5" drive
MB882SP-1S-1B - is screwless and is meant more for SSD drives
    I use the screwless version.
As for dvwearhouse and others, unless you know the part number, how do you know where to look?

  • Lost iPhoto when Apple replaced damaged MacBook Pro hard drive

My son and daughter-in-law recently had to replace their MacBook Pro hard drive. Apple did the replacement, but they got it back without iPhoto. Isn't that standard software when you purchase a MacBook Pro? Shouldn't it be part of the replacement, too?

If your computer shipped with Lion, follow the directions here to redownload the iLife apps:
Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion
If you erase install OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion on a new Mac that shipped with OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion installed, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store.
After installation, start (up) from OS X.
Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
    Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to complete installation of your applications.

  • Replacing a Mac Pro with a 2012 Mac mini?

Has anyone replaced their Mac Pro with a 2012 Mac mini? If so, are you happy with your decision?

I had the mini fitted with a SSD by Apple. Apple use the Samsung 830 and that is very capable and the price difference was not worth the effort of installing the SSD. Where installing memory is as easy as it could ever be replacing the hard disk is mind bendingly frustrating. You might think from videos such as this
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13wcKCYo_Xw
that it is a simple procedure. What they dont tell you is that this man has freakishly tiny hands. In the real world the job reminds me of disassembling mechanical wrist watches. You need a variety of specialized tools or its just not happening. And there is no soothing music.
Also the video above misses a critical step. The antenna grate will not fit back into position unless a hook like tool is used to go through a specific hole in the grate and pull up from under whilst applying a pressure in the necessary horizontal direction.
So my advice is not to install your own HDD/SSD. The memory I used was from Crucial because Crucial is the retail side of Micron who provides Apple their memory for the mac minis.
    http://www.crucial.com/upgrade/Apple-memory/Mac+mini/Mac+mini+%28Late+2012%29-up grades.html
Having heard of memory failures in AHD from different manufacturers and read about the need for 3.35v DDR3L I ran what I got from Crucial through 6 cycles of the advanced AHD, taking about 10 hours. No failures.
I am running Parallels and under various virtual machines running simultaneously I have intensive CADs, IDEs, and all the latest games on steam maxed out on a 30 inch display, without lag or any noticeable loading time at all. It is by far the fastest machine I have used. Very impressed.

  • Is it ok to switch my mac pro boot drive to port 4?

hi, my brand new mac pro hard drive is kind of loud. is it ok to switch my main drive to port 4 farther back in the computer?
    will it be slower?
    thanks so much!

There will likley be no discernable difference.
If you do not have a drive in the first bay, it may change the airflow slightly, as it will no longer act as a dam to improve the airflow of the intake fan.

  • Mac Pro internal drive problems

    Hi there,
I bought a Mac Pro in October last year for business use and it's been going fine until about a month ago.
I have two internal drives and one of them was making a terrible THUNK! noise, powering down, then trying to start again - you can hear it spinning, not quiet getting there, then spinning again. When this happens, the machine hangs, sometimes until the drive gets back on it's feet, other times I need to do a hard restart. 50% of the time the machine will not start at all. ( gets to gray apple screen and goes nowhere)
It seems to be the boot drive that the machine shipped with that's causing the problems as Disk Utility keeps finding erros on it. When I repair it, the machine works fine for a while until, when I'm working away, suddenly THUNK! and everything starts over again! Also, my bluetooth mouse and keyboard seems to be palying up too, but I don't know if this is related.
I'm tearing my hair out and I need to edit some video on it for work soon, but this seems like it's going to be impossible if the drive keeps stopping like this!
Any advice would be much appreciated!

Definitely get the backups current, an external FW would be nice to have too so you have it off line.
I zero every drive before using. It is possible that there are bad blocks. Which, according to a Google report, means it is likely to fail anyway. But zero the drive may be enough. Or 7way write erase.
Or use Windows and the vendor disk utility (which seem to be limited to DOS or Windows, even Vista has one) to recertify the drive.
I would buy a drive now, and try to get it replaced.
A severely corrupted directory can cause a drive to sound like it is in the death throes of failing.
Do you have Disk Warrior 4? have you installed Applejack? used Single User Mode and run fsck to repair the drive?
And have you already setup a 2nd boot drive? always essential to have an emergency boot drive; a working backup drive; and your main boot drive.
If a drive is going to fail, make it early on.
There are tools like Intech Speedtools to test and remap bad blocks. I always test and torture test a drive for a few days before trusting it.
