Problem restoring from  tape a backup with different retention days

As part of our procedure to test data restore for the SAP platform, recently we tried to restore a backup of the QAS SAP database from tape but had problems . During the analysis we think this problem happened because the retention of the backup on tape differs from the one in the configuration of SAP initSID.utl file; originally, the backup was made to a virtual tape using the brbackup tool /expiration parameter of 3 days, then cloned to a physical tape with a longer retention (30 days).
As a temporary solution to restore the data, we extended the u2018expirationu2019 parameter in the brbackup/brrestore configuration file (.utl) and since we still had the logs of the original backup (.anf file), we were able to complete the restore succesfully. We then changed back to the original the expiration time in the .utl file
We need to run the restore option in Production (PRO) environment but still we are not sure if this workaround is acceptable. Does anyone know if this option is correct or if thereu2019s another known solution for this case

I just upgraded to the 5s but the sales lady did not restore from my last backup with my 4s. How do I get my pictures and settings restored? I cannot seem to get it to give me that option. Can anyone tell me what to do? Thanks so much!

If the phone has already been set up, you will need to go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings to be able to go through the setup again. This time use Restore from Backup.

  • Help with Restoring from Time Machine Backup with new Hard Drive

Hello. Recently, my hard drive died in my 24" Early 2008 Aluminum iMac. Luckily, I had a time machine backup, and I took it upon myself to replace the 320 GB Hard Drive with a 2 TB Seagate Barracuda disk. The hardware replacement (although difficult) went fine. Now, I'm having a bit of trouble restoring the new drive from my time machine backup. The new disk shows up in Disk Utility with the correct capacity. I formatted the new drive with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using my installation disk. My only problem is that the drive isn't showing up when I am choosing which drive I want to restore my time machine backup onto. I can pick out the backup I want perfectly fine, but I can't find the new drive. Any help?

UPDATE: I restarted it (Classic IT Crowd "Have you tried turning it off and on" moment) and the drive shows up on screen. Right now, I'm waiting for it to "Calculate disk size needed for restore" and I'll keep you posted.
UPDATE 2: Currently restoring. Let's see if it's successful.

  • Restore from time machine backup to different mac

The logic board is fried on my apparently backed-up, out of warranty MacBook Pro (MBP), which was running Lion. I don't have enough time to figure out the steps and get it done. I need some help here.
    Option 1:
I am weighing and thinking (and weighing and thinking..) should I turn an underutilized iMac at home (running Snow Leopard) into the recipient of the files and programs of the MBP? This would mean restoring from that backup over wi-fi to the iMac. This solution has distinct challenges I believe, but I am not familiar with what they are. What do I need to do to accomplish this option? How many pre-requisites and steps would I need to take?
    Option 2:
Buy a new MBP (big bill) or MacBook Air (MBA, cheaper), and attempt the use of Setup Assistant to bring the apps and data over to the new MBP or MBA. Supposed to work easily.

    Hi Steven,
The question is, which option would you most LIKE to do. Both options require the same step and will hav the same outcome. Replacing your MacBook Pro with a new one would surely be the best experience, but migrating to an existing iMac would be just as simple.
Either way, as you know, you would use Migration Assitant to transfer the data to the new recipient. You mentioned using WiFi, but if you have that backup on an external USB drive, that may be much faster.
I can't think of any problems this would pose, except maybe the loss of settings that arent compatible with the OS of the backup. if you choose option 1, it may make it easier to upgrade the iMac to Lion that way it receives that backup more seemlessly.
I hope my suggestions help! Let me know if you have any more questions

  • Restoring from Time Machine backup with older OS

I was having difficulties upgrading from OS X 10.5.8 to 10.6 so I decided to backup my entire system via Time Machine and then do a clean install of 10.6. The upgrade was successful, however this being a clean installation none of my files were restored. I intended to restore from the Time Machine backup but I'm hesitant to do so because the backup was with 10.5.8 and I'm not sure if I'll run into conflicts with restoring from the old OS. I'm looking to see if the community has had experience with doing this and if it is safe do so. Can I restore from the 10.5.8 backup and maintain my 10.6 OS?

i'm also curious for the answer on this one :-)

  • Rman backup with different retention

    Hi,
I have to write script on RMAN backup retentions and policies.
    My requirement is as below:
Daily backup Name and retentions : db_daily_bkp_sun,db_daily_bkp_mon...with 7 days retension
Weekly backup Name and retentions : db_wkly_bkp_01,db_wkly_bkp_02...with 4 backup retension
Monthly backup Name and retentions : db_mnth_bkp_jan,db_mnth_bkp_feb...with 12 backups
Yearly backup Name and retentions : db_yearly_bkp_2010,db_yearly_bkp_2011,db_yearly_bkp_2012
All backups will be full online. We have to store backups in local disk.
We have created backup locations on disk as below.
    Daily : /orabackup/daily
    Weekly : /orabackup/weekly
    Monthly: /orabackup/monthly
    Yearly : /orabackup/yearly
So is it possible to take such backups in RMAN without using any third party software ? If possible then please provide me such script.

    Hi,
RMAN will make you have only one retention.
You can have more kind of retention using the option "keep until" in your backup command.
It'll certainly do what you need.

  • Problem restoring from time machine backup!

    Hello,
Today I upgraded my Macbook Pro to Mavericks just after doing a full Time Machine back up to my ecternal hard drive. Beforehand i did also check if Logic Pro 9 was compatible and from what i saw on the internet it seemed to be, however from my testing it is not. And i have some very important work to be doing with it (already a long way in so can't lose it) so i tried to restore my mac to Mountain Lion through restoring through time machine which was all well and good.. until 1.4%. Which is when it stops, says it hasn't worked, to restart and try again. I am asking anyone for advice with this matter as i currently have a Macbook that is no use to me and really need to get it working again.
    Thank you in advance

Are you doing the restore after booting into the Recovery Volume?

  • I'm having a problem with logging into a FileVault-protected user account after restoring from Time Machine backup.

    Hi all,
My computer had been running really slowly for a while, so I decided to erase the whole hard drive and reinstall the operating system, and then I was going to restore the files I cared about from Time Machine. The main account, which had all my documents and photos, was FileVault-protected. The last thing I did before erasing the hard drive was to run one last Time Machine backup. As far as I remember, I always ran Time Machine backups with the FileVaulted user logged in.
I don't remember whether I was using FileVault 1 or 2. I had been using FileVault 1, but I installed Lion as soon as it came out and I thought I had migrated to FileVault 2 at that point.
Once I erased the hard drive and reinstalled the operating system, I browsed the Time Machine disk and, within the Users folder, there was no folder for the main user account. When I tried to reinstall everything by restoring from Time Machine backup, I'd get the option for all the user accounts, but when I tried to log in with the main one I'd get the dreaded "You are unable to log in to the FileVault user account "User" at this time. Log in failed because an error occurred." Finally, when attempting to restore from the Time Machine backup again, I noticed something strange: After the computer got to about 10% done restoring, it declared itself completed successfully and rebooted.
I've tried a number of tips that came up from questions about similar issues on the Apple support forum, but had no luck. Is there any way to get these files back? Did they ever even get backed up?
    Thanks.

    Hroodbwai wrote:
I can't find it! not sure what's going on but the only folder shown is the " Shared" folder.
Did you have only the one user account? If there were others, they should also be in the "Users" folder. You probably won't have access to the files inside them, but they should be there.
From what can make out, it looks like it's not backed up any of the files for the filevault account. Can't see user folder when looking through previous backups in Time Machine galaxy view.
Are you doing that from a Finder window set to your internal HD, or your computer name? It should look something like this (with the Finder in List view):
    |
    |
I'd been logging out and backing up manually on a regular basis.
Scheduled backups should run normally; but they won't back up the File Vault sparse bundle, nor will any run manually.
The only time it's backed-up is when you actually log out.
You should have seen this window on logout:
    |
    |
    followed by this one:
    |
    |
If you didn't see the second one, or cancelled it, the account wasn't backed-up.

  • RMAN Backup Restore from tape

    Hello Gurus
We have lvl0 RMAN database backup restored from tape but due to some reasons we could not apply recovery on it. On checking the information in controlfile, it identified only the system file and no other file. So, we recreated the controlfile and decided to recover using backup controlfile option (until cancel or until change or until time). However, to my surprise, when I listed the checkpointchange# and checkpoint_time columns of v$datafile_header, I found the difference in timestamps ranging 24 hrs -- which menat we had to apply 24 hrs of archiving to bring all dbfs to a consistent state (before it allowed us to open the db) -- so far so good, it worked that way.
My question is that, while I trigger a lvl0 RMAN backup at say 4PM on 27th July and it finishes on 4PM on 28th July (as I am directly pushing around 1 TB data to tapes) -- what is the consistency timestamp of this backup. In other words, is this backup available for a restore of 4PM 27th July? Or is it available only for a restore of 4PM 28th July and later ...?
Isn't it that RMAN works at block level and when I fire a backup it should give me all the dbf's of that timestamp..?
    Appreciate your inputs/comments.

When taking a online backup with RMAN, the datafiles backup is always inconsistent because it needs the archived redo logs generated during the backup to be consistent: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14192/intro005.htm#sthref70.
A full online backup can only be used to restore the database to a point in time starting after backup end: if a backup starts at 4PM on 27th July and it finishes on 4PM on 28th July you can use it to restore the database to a point in time after 28-JUL 4PM.

  • Restore from iphone4 itunes backup stops after upgrade to ios6. does it have to do with my computer settings as it starts hanging and cannot connect to the internet anymore either till I restart.

I have the latest version of iTunes and the iOS6 installed on my iPhone4. The restore from my iTunes backup stops at the end of the recovery process though. Do I need to change anything in my computer settings to let it totally finish?

It was down for about 2 weeks when I started to 'play' with the settings. I don't know what I did, but it worked again. The computer stopped working again about a month ago and I just am now getting to it. I don't know what else to do and why it stopped.

  • Problem restoring from previous backup

I tried to upgrade my 3GS to IOS5 but something went wrong part way through. Although I now have IOS 5 the phone has been wiped. I took a backup before I started and have tried to restore to that but it says now that the backup is either corrupt or not compatible with the phone! As part of this process I had to start the upgrade again and it took a later backup which I guess is not worth using at all. I would like to restore from an earlier backup than the two that it is giving me options for. How do I do this?
Also of concern is the well over a thousand photos that I had on my iphone - how do I now retrieve these?

    Graig,
Try backing all the way out to the "Welcome" screen and then proceed forward again and see if it see backups now.
Also, if the drive had gone to sleep or spun down before you got to the point of choosing a backup disk, that might explain it. Try backing out to the "Welcome" screen again, switch the external drive OFF wait 10 seconds, and switch it back ON. Now proceed with the install.
Let us know if this helps.
    Cheers!

  • Unable to restore from Time Machine Backup

    Hello,
My system recently crashed after removing the Boot Camp partition for Windows!
But No problem because I have everything backed up on my Time Capsule!
But actually there is a problem... I inserted my Mac OS X 10.5 Installation disk and tried to restore from a backup done on Mac OS X 10.6.1...
After 3 hours it told me that the restore was sucessful but when I restarted, a grey screen appeared and told me to restart again... And I keep getting that screen each time I try to boot.
I tried to repair the disk using disk utility but still getting the problem!
Can it be caused because the backup was made on Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.1) and I am trying to restore using a Leopard disk (10.5)?
    Thanks in advance.

I had the exact same issue, and thought I was safe with my computer backed up. After failed attempts to restore with the 10.5 disk I got my 10.6 Snow Leopard disk back off my friend. I erased the hard drive and reinstalled Snow Leopard, thinking I could use the migration assistant. Not so, since I had renamed my hard drive from Macintosh HD to a different name, there was but one backup I could choose from which was 10.5.6 or something like that and that was right when I first got my computer. So now I thought: oh now I have Snow Leopard installed on here and I have the Snow Leopard disk, restoring should work. Six hours later it was at 71% telling me it could not restore files. THIS IS INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING. So right now my computer is yet again going through the unneccessarily arduous journey of erasing it's hard drive and restoring from a backup of 10.6, not 10.6.1 which was made in September. Any help with this failure of Time Capsule and Time Machine would be appreciated. I had to type this on my iPhone since I don't have any computer at the moment. :'(
Try doing a full system restore from your TM backups. See the instructions in item #14 of the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.

How can I restore the photos which I restored in my iCloud Backup ?
Does not restore ! Just remaims idle !

I fixed this issue after a lot of time and pain (see below)
Seems to have come up on various threads so it seems to be an issue and should be escalated by Apple. They were none the wiser at the genius bar apart from telling me the iCloud backup is probably corrupted and I should call Apple care (as if that is going to do anything)

I experienced the same problem with the iCloud restore not working properly. I had my iPhone 4 replaced as the home button was defective. When attempting to restore an 9.5GB iCloud backup from the day before it just would not work properly. Firstly, half my apps did not restore, they would begin to download showing the progress indicator then just disappear, leaving my home screen naked. No big deal as apps can be downloaded again.
However, what was a big deal for me was the 1,625 photos on my camera roll, including many of the first year of my kid's life. The camera roll would say downloading x of 1,625 photos, download a few of them, then simply stop downloading any new shots. When I would restart the phone it did not show any downloading message, it believed the restore was complete. I tried about ten different restore scenarios, listed below, all of which gave me varying results (some resulting in all my apps restoring) but all of which would only give me some of my photos back.
What was a comfort was that I once got about 700 of the shots back. So the photos were still in the cloud rather than gone and this indicated that it was the restore process or the iCloud backup on my phone that was the problem. These are the things I tried in sequence as I despairingly tried to get my photos back...
Things I tried that DID NOT work
    1) Erase all settings and attempt to restore again from scratch (four times)
    2) Tried the restore from a different WiFi network (once)
    3) Tried the restore from one WiFi network then switched to another once the restore 'hung' (once)
    4) Tried the restore from an Apple store WiFi network (once)
    5) Tried the restore from a previous iCloud backup (twice)
    6) Had Apple replace the iPhone 4 (once)
With all of these I got a varying amount of my photos and apps back before it stopped restoring. I was also making the mistake (I learnt afterwards) of opening and moving between apps during the download to check progress.
Thing I tried that DID work
    1) Did not plug the phone into my MacBook, I used the wall charger only to prevent any iTunes sync activity
    2) Erase all settings and data, restore from the iCloud backup and input passwords in all the pop up windows once it reboots.
    2) Open photos app gallery to see photos downloading and show the progress message "downloading xx of x,xxx"
    3) Left it on this photo screen and did not touch the phone at all for the entire restore. I did not close the photo galley/camera roll app once, open any other apps.
Finally this time round it work and all my photos and apps restored in full. I am going to go back to syncing with iTunes as I don't trust iCloud for restores. It seems that iCloud does not handle photo restores that well, especially if the gallery is large. In short: Wall charger only, restore from iCloud, open Photos app, don't touch. Really hope this works for you too if you've had the same issue.
