  • Can't Update or Restore iPod Mini

My iPod Mini shows up in Windows, but instantly says 'Do not disconnect' even when fully charged. iTunes doesn't recognise it and the Updater usually hangs. I've tried everything including the 5 R's and have followed the steps in this article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716. When I use the Windows 'safely remove hardware' function, I get an error message saying Windows was trying to write data to the device - I can't see any way of stopping this, even after removing iTunes and the Updater from the PC. The last step offered by Apple is to reinstall Windows, but I don't see why I should have to do this as Norton SystemWorks tells me everything is working fine. Since quite a few other people seem to have been having similar problems recently, could this be to do with an automatically-installed Windows update causing a conflict?

I am having all the same trouble with my Nano. It was working beautifully until today, when I noticed that it was not showing up in the Itunes menu. Itunes says it's not connected, but my computer and it have a fine connection with power, etc. I have tried all of the steps, etc., and have had no luck. Now it will not let me restore it. I get a message saying that there are other applications using Ipod... but I have shutdown everything. I am just stumped. Any suggestions anyone?

  • 2 Problems with iPod Mini

well, I recently encountered 2 problems with my iPod Mini.
#1- It says the battery is charged, but dies out as soon as I start to play a song
    -And-
#2- (the reason I joined this forum) just about 4 minutes ago, The screen has that black Apple logo on it, but it stays there forever. I reset it, but when the logo appears, it still stays there. I plugged it into my computer, and the logo is still there. It dosent respont what so ever. I cant even turn it off. Please tell me how to fix it.
    "HOORA!"
    Thanks- Marine

    For your battery issue:
If your iPod is old, the battery is probably just worn out and needs replaced.
After about 400 charge cycles, the battery is only able to hold up to 80% of its charge. After even further charge cycles, the battery can hold less and less.
Read more about it at these pages:
    iPod Battery FAQ
Getting the most from your iPod battery
    General iPod battery information
If your iPod is out of warranty, Apple can replace your iPod with the same model and a new battery for $59 and $6.95 for shipping. If it is in warranty, there will be no service charge, but there may be a shipping fee.
For Apple to replace your battery, go here:
    http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
3rd parties can also replace your battery with a generic battery for lower costs. They also sell DIY kits so you can replace it yourself, and never have to send it in.
Note that those Support articles are a tad outdated, so while their information is about the same, exact number figures may be off (Example: they say battery life can last 8-12 hours. New models can last about twice to three times that.)
For your second issue: (I don't have a premade message for this :P )
It sounds like the formatting messed up or the hard drive is failing. Reset it again, and as soon as the Apple logo pops up, hold the center and Play/Pause buttons until it goes into Disk Mode (if it doesn't get into disk mode, you really have problems, likely with your motherboard). If it gets into Disk Mode, plug it into a computer and use iTunes to restore it.
Try that and let me know how that works for you.

  • Cant Restore ipod mini

My Ipod mini has the folder with an exclamation point icon on it and I have tried all the solutions apple provided and none have worked to solve the problem. So I tried to restore my ipod mini and even that didnt work. I switch my ipod mini into disk mode so that the ipod updater software can recognize it but as soon as the updater software connects to the ipod mini, the ipod then restarts itself and the updater software is no longer connected to the ipod and goves me the error "cant mount ipod". I have tried restoring it several different times on different USB ports several times. I am stumped and have no idea how to solve this problem and help would be appreciated.

If your iPod is recognized in Explorer, close the updater program and try this.
Click on start/control panel/admin tools/computer management/disk management/right click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”.
Choose something lower down the alphabet, say “M”, or something similar.
A drive letter conflict can sometimes cause the 'can't mount iPod' message.
    Then try the restore again.

  • Restore ipod mini freezes itunes and doesn't restore

I can't manage any music on my ipod mini with itunes. So I decided to try the restore...Everything goes smoothly until I get to the progress bar where itunes is "restoring" my ipod. After an hour of waiting and the bar sitting at about a millimeter completed I close itunes. I've also updated, and reinstalled itunes many times. My music is still on my ipod and it still charges and works perfectly except when I want to manage my music. Please help :P

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Still having Problems with IPOD mini

I formated, updated and restored my iPod Mini; I cahnge computer, virtually everything that was discussed here and still ahving a problem.
I solved the problem of not recognized in itunes but appered in windows as disk drive. Now, when I'm uploading songs, I get to load only a fex (15~20), after that, it appears a message on the ipod display for low battery, then I go back and connect it to the AC adapter and the battery appears fully charged. Then i try again and the same problem.
I remember have run a chkdsk on the ipod and looks like some system files are corrupted. Specifically one names "ipod control"
Doew anybody now what can i do to solve this? Is my last hope before truw it away and by another one (from a different brad due I'm not willing to take the risk of this happening again)

Don't toss it: fix it! I had the same problem (corrupted system files) even after restore, and ultimately realized the CF hard-drive was going bad. So, I upgraded my Mini and even wrote a story about it: http://www.audioholics.com/techtips/setup/loudspeakers/iPodMiniUpgrade.php

  • Problems with iPod mini in iTunes 7

I recently installed iTunes 7.0.1.8 on my PC and have been having problems with my iPod mini (Windows format, software version 2.6.1). Initialy I could not see the iPod in iTunes but I followed the advice in a support article to change the Startup Type under Terminal Services Properties to "manual" which seemed to work.
However now new music that I have purchased will not transfer because it says that my iPod software is too old; but the Update button on the Summary tab in my iPod Preferences is greyed out - help?!

  • ITunes can't restore iPod mini

I had to restart the player in disk mode to be able to connect it/see it in iTunes. When attempting to restore my iPod mini 4GB, iTunes 9.1 (79) lies saying that the player 'cannot be restored because it contains files that are in use by another application.' This player was loaded 3 years ago. The computer is a Mac mini PPC 1.25 now using OS 10.4.11. iTunes is unable to access the playlist. Since I'm not sure erasing the iPod with Disk Utility would do any good, please advise. Fernando

    Hello macarra,
Have you tried resetting your iPod first and then re-attempted to restore it via iTunes? To do this, toggle the hold switch on and off, then press and hold the Menu and Select (Center) buttons together for a couple of seconds until the Apple logo appears.

  • Can't Restore Ipod Mini

Hi can anyone help with this ?
My daughter's ipod mini has folder with !mark. My computer doesn't recognise it in normal mode, when I set to disc mode and try to restore the software I get a message to say 'can't mount ipod'. It's fully charged.
I am stuck and would be grateful for any help

If the iPod is recognized by the computer whilst in disk mode, you can try changing the drive letter by going to Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Computer Management / Disk Manager with the iPod attached and right clicking on your iPod and choosing Reassign. Make it a much higher letter, like I:
Note this can happen when your boot drive is not C:, or when you have a network drive that conflicts with the iPod assignment, or when you have other portable storage devices that are sometimes attached. It's always safe to move the iPod well away from the lower drive letters.
Do also try other ports, preferrably those on the rear.

  • Problems when iPod mini was transferred between family members

My father and I both have iPod minis. My father, after a few months, decided it was too hard for him to use, and subsequently gave the iPod to my sister. She doesn't have a computer of her own, and would like to use mine to keep her music on. The problem is, when I connect the iPod to my computer, it charges, but isn't otherwise recognized by iTunes. I suspect that this is due to the fact that my father had initally set it up with his laptop, and somehow it is already seen as being registered to a computer that will no longer be using it. Any ideas on how to fix this problem?
    Two other semi-related problems:
    * I downloaded a song for my sister, but using my own iTunes account. I want to play this song on her iPod, but again, it won't be recognized by iTunes.
    * She wants to change the name of the iPod (minor, but still an issue). How can you do this?
Any help would definitely be appreciated.

I just fixed this problem. Apparently, after reformating the iPod completely (via the computer, not via the manual way to do it on the iPod itself), it allowed me to change the name and register the iPod on this computer.

  • Problem installing ipod mini hardware error msg

Installed software ok but when I connect ipod mini to USB 2.0 I get "Found new hardware wizard. There was a problem installing this hardware: apple ipod usb device. An error occurred during the installation of the device. One of the filter drivers installed for this device is invalid." If I click finish I get a pop up at bottom saying" A problem occurred during installation. Your new hardware might not work properly." Click out of that and my ipod and itunes works ok. How do I correct this nusance? Tried reloading 3 times now, same results. Brand new to ipod.

hey, i finally figured out how to do it! i had the same frustrating problem as you until just a moment ago : ) This is what you need to do:
    1) Reset your iPod Mini by holding down on the Menu and the Select button until the Apple appears.
    2) Plug it into your computer, windows and mac should be the same for that
    3) Go into the iPod Updater and update the software : ) should work... if you need anything else, just ask or go to the following:

  • Problem w/ipod mini reseting/charging

I've been having a problem with my ipod mini (2nd. gen 4gb) not fulling charging even after 8 hours and then shutting itself off and reseting after a few minutes of use. I've read some of the posts and couldn't really find a solution yet. I've tried reseting manually while plugged in to my computer (I don't have a wall plug-in adapter) I made sure I'm fully updated (v. 1.4) and have not yet reset it to factory settings, I'm hoping not to have to do that because I have a huge library of music on my computer and do not want to have issues reloading some of it onto my ipod. I have started the process to send it in for repairs but an afraid I will be charged the diagnostic fees (I can't afford the possible $100) I've got a dark spot in my lcd screen in the upper corner and a few scratches on the case from being transported in my purse with my keys but other than that it hasn't been traumatized in any way (never dropped etc.) I'm thinking about going to my local apple store tomorrow to see if they can help. I just want to know that if I cancel my repair order before sending in my ipod that I won't be charged anything and also if I do end up sending it back that it won't be sent back with a bill unrepaired. Please help me I got this a few months ago for my birthday and cannot afford to buy a new one if this ones broken and not repairable!

Ok so I charged it all night and took it off this morning and as soon as I turned it on and toldit to play a song so I could try calibrating the battery it said low battery and shut off again! It showed it was still charging on the screen, I unmountedit from my computer showed an almost full battery then jumped to half full then shut off. I'm getting so incredibly frustrated with this thing, somebody please help me out here!

  • Restoring iPod mini

I tried restoring my iPod mini to delete the songs, but it isn't working. Any suggestions?

    dell   Windows XP

Would you care to give us any more info to work with?
There was a virus on my computer and somehow, all the songs on my iPod were deleted. When I plug my iPod mini in, the computer still recognizes it and says it has used a certain number of gygabites, but there are no songs. I asked a question about this before and you told me to restore my iPod so I could put all the songs back on from before. I clicked on the link on the apple website to restore it and went through the steps and it prompted me to restart my computer so the new hardware could take effect. I restarted it, but then nothing happened. I plugged the iPod in thinking it would be restored, but it still does the same thing. Any ideas?

  • Help on Restoring Ipod Mini

I have recieved a Ipod min (4gig) from a friend of mine. It didnt come with any of the cables, tho it came with a Belkin Powerdock. He gave it to me, telling me it wouldnt charge. I managed to get it to charge, i could even listen to the music and access itunes. But it was running really slugish, so i thought... why not restore it, and update it? well....when i restored it... i now permanently have a little image of a AC adapter being plugged into a wall. I dont have a AC adapter, and i have NO idea on where to get one...
Today, i bought a wall adapter, but its not AC, you plug the usb into the Ipod and then into the outlet thing and that is suposed to work, but i still get that image. I even tried the... sketchy thing... idno i saw it in another thread.
Any help would be appreciated! ....

I got it from Target. I purchased a car charger just before then, because i was also told that was suposed to work too, but it didn't and before anyone suggests this, i dont live ANYWHERE near a ipod store.
the adapter i bought, its a small white box, that plugs into the wall, and it has a USB socket on the back, the adapter came with all the cords i needed. When i plugged it in, i thought it would work, but it still shows me that image.
retrying the reset...? well.... i would but my computer wont recognize the ipod anymore...

  • Restoring ipod mini after updating

i downloaded the ipod updater last night and the computer did not give me the option to retore, only to update. so it went through the process, but i really want to restore it to the original settings and can't figure out how to do it after it's already been updated with the latest software.
i tried to re-install the software, but the ipod didn't respond.
also, i am connected by USB and running OS X 10.2.8. the information online says i should be connected to the dock? and be running a newer version of OS X? is this the problem? is there a way to get around it. i don't have a dock for the mini.
    thank you.
