Problem restoring library with the vault

I've had three disappointing experiences today with Aperture. Two are minor, but the third is a major issue. The first minor issue relates to an unexpected image size limit for export (see thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=340789&tstart=0 )
The second (minor) disappointment was an incomplete "undo" when I made a mistake while editing a book. In this case, I used a solid color as a background for captions (for highlight) on each photo. I imported this solid color as an image (in the image browser) and copied it to a photo placeholder located behind each caption. This was a 90 page book with ~150 captions. I accidentally deleted the color "image" and all the highlights disappeared in the book. I immediately completed the "undo" command, which returned the color "image" back to the browser. Unfortunately, it did not put the highlight colors back into each of the 150 captions, so I had to drag the color back into each placeholder box individually (not a big deal, but not much of an "undo" either!
The third (and far more serious issue) relates to restoring the project with the vault. After deleting the highlight color (described above), I thought the easiest solution would be to simply restore the project from the vault. I had just backed the project up minutes before making my error, so this seemed to be a good solution.
After first duplicating the Aperture Library (for safety), I used the vault to restore the Library as it was before I made the error. After restoring, I found my 90 page book was completely destroyed! All the text and pages had returned to the default template pages with no photos and with the default "latin" text! Curiously, I had previously made a duplicate copy of the book that appeared to be in good shape. Unfortunately, I had added considerable content since this earlier copy was made.
I deleted the "restored" Library and replaced it with the copy I had wisely made before the restoration. It worked and I was "happy" to fix the original problem by simply dragging the color background 150 times.
The question I now have is: Can I now trust the vault to restore my library? I don't think so! Has anybody else had problems using the vault to restore their library?

There ought to be a FAQ about this, but there isn't, so here goes.
Yesterday, I tried to restore my Aperture Library from a Vault. But the process would not complete because one of the files would not copy. In my view, the Restore function should continue with all the other stuff in the Vault, but it just quits. So, in these circumstances, the Restore Library fails and the Vault becomes useless as a secure storage device.
After much trial and error, I discovered that it is possible to remove the offending file from the Vault. As follows:
1. Note down the message which identifies the problem file.
2. In the Finder, go to the Vault and Control-Click on it. This brings up a list of optional actions. Choose "Open Package Contents". Now you can see what is in the Vault. There are files, documents, and sub-packages.
3. Go to the Project (a sub-package) which contains the offending file (eg. in my case, it was one of the "Rolls" in the iPhoto Library which had been imported), again Control-Click and choose "Open Package Contents". Now you will have a pile of folders, and from the message which Aperture gave you when the Restore failed, you should be able to identify the folder which contains the offending file.
4. Open the folder, go to the offending file and remove it from the Vault. Leave the file on the desktop, because it is very likely that you can open the image in Preview and then save it again as a JPEG or TIFF to be reimported back into the Aperture Library, once the Aperture Library is restored.
5. Run Restore Library once again from the Vault. If there's another offending file, you will have to repeat the process until all the corrupted files are out of the Vault.
Without this procedure, it seems to me that the Vault becomes useless as a source for Restore Library, and if the Vault can't restore the Library, what's the point of having it. Apple has to change the Vault procedure to make it usable. A back-up is of no value if one corrupt file will cause the whole back-up to fail. The procedure can identify the offending file, and let you know at the end that it was unable to copy that file, but otherwise your restoration is complete.
An alternative altogether is to simply use a back-up program to back-up the Library to another disk, and then use the back-up program to reverse the procedure if the main Library becomes corrupted. I regularly back up my entire disk as a bootable back-up on three fire-wire drives.

  • I can't restore 'library' with support files from Time Machine

backup - I can't restore 'library' with support files from Time Machine - Ask Different
Due to an accident, my entire applications folder with all the support files, including plists and caches got deleted.
I tried restoring by files from the most recent Time Machine backups but I cannot retrieve my applications with the support files.
I even tried it with migration assistant on a new image.
    Is this impossible?
    Must I start from scratch?
    Details of the ‘accident’
I was using this app called ‘AppCleaner’ that also automatically deletes related support files which are normally left behind if one simply trashes an Application.
In the search view, I typed the app name and I selected all the apps in the results using Command + A. Unfortunately, this selected every single Application in the Applications Folder in the background and I trashed and deleted all files.
    Anyway.
I tried to restore the applications and library from my Time Machine Back-ups but failed to do so because I didn’t have enough space to restore. (I have a 11inch Macbook Air 2012 64GB SSD
When I tried to restart in recovery mode, I had the same problem, I was disallowed the option to restore using my time capsule backups because my SSD didn’t have enough space for the backup.
I then tried to restore it to a totally different but new image on a 64GB USB3.0 Sandisk USB Stick, but the process stopped after hours of being stuck around 30.4 percent and the computer was unable to boot, leaving me with a persistent verbose message suggesting it couldn’t identify the os, kernel or anything.
I finally tried restoring the state using migration assistant on the very same SSD that had my files missing. This happened successfully and I have all my applications in the applications folder.
But now I have 13GB free (I had 2GB before) and all my application support files, saved states, preferences, caches and customizations are gone.
Basically, it feels like I just got a new macbook with my documents and itunes folder loaded on to it.
How can I get my apps back to the pre-deletion state or is this impossible? Do I have to start from scratch? I thought my Time Machine Backups would restore it to exactly the same state, am I wrong?

Can you simply navigate to your Time Machine backup with the Finder? Treat it like an external hardrive and just look for your old Applications folder. /Applications/
Also, quite a few apps put config and support files in ~/Library/Application\ Support/
So you may be able to get the files from there as well.

  • After upgrading my 3gs to ios5, I get 2 copies of pictures synced from my computer, 1 in the Photo Library and another in a library with the same name as the folder I put the pictures in to put on the phone. Any ideas why?

When syncing pictures from my computer to my I-Phone I get 2 copies of the pictures, 1 in the Photo Library and another in a library with the same name as the folder I put pictures in to put on the phone. This started after I upgraded to ios5. I have tried re-installing I-Tunes. I have not reset the phone. My main concern is the amount of memory pictures take up on the phone. It's not a problem now but could be in the future. Any Ideas on why this happening?

It has always been this way.  it was never different.  This is how the iphone handles photos - always has.
There are NOT two copies,  There are simply two ways to access the very same photos.  All synced photos will ALWAYS be under Photo Library ( you can look at all photos at once this way or do a slideshow of all photos).  Those very same photos can also be accessed from the individual folders so you can show or slideshow just that folder.
Just as a book can be in the library and in the fiction section, there is only one book/photo.

I have a problem when working with the console VMWare.
Sometimes it is impossible to connect any of the hypervisor to the guest OS managed by them.
I get the message: "Unable connect to the MKS: Host address lookup for server <name of the hypervisor> failed: No such host is known."
This message always appears in conjunction with the reconfiguration of virtual switch: "Reconfigure vNetwork Distributed Switch .... Initiated by Cisco_Nexus_1000V_ ....."
Upon completion of the reconfiguration, Communication console, with guest OS is restored, or on its own or after a reboot srv-vc.
In this time, I do not see any message in Nexus 1000v log.
    What is this?
    Thanks in advance.

Smells of a DNS issue.  Are you sure your ESX hosts are reachable from your client via DNS hostname?  Try pinging them from a command prompt/terminal.  You may have DNS server issues.
As a temp fix, edit your [windowspath]/system32/etc/drivers/hosts file and manually add the ESX host name and IP, then re-test.

  • I just lost all recent updates to my iCal from the last days. Can this possibly happen ??? What can I do to restore iCal with the most recent updates?

Hello All, yesterday afternoon I just lost all recent updates to my iCal from the last days. How can this possibly happen ??? It may have occured after I chose the Refresh function after I had problems searching my iCal for a particular event. I think my iPhone was also not properly synched in the morning but I didn't pay it much attention and opened iCal on my MacBookAir instead.
How can I prevent this from happening again?
What can I do to restore iCal with the most recent updates?

Random glitch.  It doesn't matter; if you didn't backup the data, then you can't recover the data.
In the future, for any 'important' data, back up that data regularly.  Forward the 'important' text messages to your email.  Trasnfer your photos & videos to your computer, etcetera.

  • A problem has occured with the licensing of this product?

I installed a new hard disk in my MacBook Pro. I had made a backup and after restoring from that everything works except Adobe products. I get the message:
"A problem has occured with the licensing of this product. Restart your computer and re-launch the product. If this problem still occurs after restarting, contact Customer Support for further assistance, and mention the error code shown at the bottom of this screen.
    Error: 213:5"
I have run uninstall, then reinstalled and reregistered (Photoshop, Illustrator and inDesign). Still the same result.
Any ideas about what I can do?

You cannot restore Adobe apps from a backup. Run the Creative Suite Cleaner Tool, reinstall them properly. If it still doesn't work, you seriously should consider reinstalling your machine from scratch without resorting to the backup data. Doing this may have introduced other issues like retaining a flakey configuration that prevents services from being run or invalid user permissions. Tracking this down would be more complicated than just starting over with a clean slate...

If you’re using the paired remote and the Apple TV status light flashes white, the problem isn’t with the remote.
Then what is the problem since I have troubleshoot my remote, it is working but cannot do anything on apple TV?

If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)

  • Hi! I can't upgrade my iTunes 10.3.1.55 on my Windows XP 2002 SP3 to the latest version of iTunes. Got the message: "A problem has occured with the Windows Installer-package. A program needed for this installation could not be run." What to do?

Perhaps let's first try updating your Apple Software Update.
Launch Apple Software Update ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"). Does it launch and offer you a newer version of Apple Software Update? If so, choose to install just that update to Apple Software Update. (Deselect any other software offered at the same time.)
If the ASU update goes through okay, try another iTunes install. Does it go through without the errors this time?

  • Why does my iPhone 4 not charge correctly?  Problem is definitely with the phone and not charges or chords.  Phone will charge but very slowly and no icon comes on.  Computer and iTunes doesn't recognize it a being connected.

My iPhone 4 quit charging correctly.  It does charge but very slowly and icon doesn't indicate it as charging.  I've checked cables and charges and the problem is definetily with the phone.  My car stereo no longer recognizes it as a device.  Neither does the computer.  The real strange thing to me is that when I plug it into my old klispch speaker dock it will play songs.  My battery life is good when it is charged so I don't think its the battery. I've tried resetting the phone and cleaning the charging port.  I'm out of warranty.
Would disconnecting the battery possibly reset it from some glitch or is the charging port got some bad contacts?

I checked with the Genius Bar.  It was a new dilema to the lady that was helping me.  She took it to a back room and worked on it but it came out the same.  She gave me some options for repair or credit for replacement.
I just kept the phone and put up with slowly charging it by plugging it in and then turning it off.
I couldn't transfer anything from itunes.
I finally got fed up and bought a new charging port for $10. and a toolkit for $3.  I looked up a video on youTube for the replacement and did it.
That solved all the problems, it was the charging port, must have been some bad pins or something because it patially worked.

Having installed an upgrade for Photoshop Elements 13, I cannot open the application. I get an error message saying "Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor cannot be opened because of a problem. Check with the developer to make sure Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X".
I have since uninstalled and reinstalled the app, but get the same error message.

Which version of OS X do you have? It's not clear from your post whether "installed an upgrade" means you just installed PSE 13 as an upgrade or you installed an update to PSE 13, like ACR 9 or 13.1. Please clarify.

    2)  install Snow Leopard Server (now available from Apple for $20 telephone orders USA & Canda only) into Parallels 8 to run your Palm software in Mt. Lion:

No not jailbroken. After the update which took about 45 minutes. The phone went black. Dead. Wouldn't restart. Using the new itunes I tried to restore it. It went through the motions; the white Apple and progress bar appeared on the iphone screen. Then I got a message "Itunes has detected an iphone in recovery mode. You must restore this iphone before it can be used with itunes." Then the phone went completly dead again. I Repeated the process and got the same results. Is there another way to restore the phone if it's dead, besides itunes?
