Problem running BCUpdate.exe (boot camp 2.1 update)

Just bought a new iMac 20", upgraded from OSX 10.5.4 to 10.5.6 (plus all other s/w upgrades), ran Boot Camp, made a 50GB Windows NTFS partition, installed Win/XP SP3 from the Windows DVD. Booted into WIndows. So far so good.
Under vanilla Windows, I stuck in the Leopard Install DVD and autoran the Boot Camp drivers install. It crashed half-way through with the blue screen of death (flashed up for only 1 sec), and then the machine automatically rebooted. Now it will no longer boot normally into Windows, it gets halfway and then repeats the crash & reboot scenario over & over.
So, I reinstalled all of Windows (again!), but instead of using the Leopard Install DVD, I tried to run the Boot Camp 2.1 Update package, BCUpdate.exe. However, when I double click on the package in Windows, nothing happens. I right-click -> Open, and it doesn't run. Run as... Administrator, it doesn't run. Safe Mode won't let me run it either. The checksum of the file is correct. I don't get it.
What am I doing wrong???

Hmm, for that to work, I would need hardwired Internet access. All I have is wireless, but Windows doesn't see the Broadcom card, so I can't go the online Apple S/W update route.
So, I'm still stuck. Maybe there's some way I can make an autorun CD or something out of the BCUpdate.exe file...?

Problems with Boot Camp 2.1 update & Heat Generation with new MBP

After spending a lot of time debating whether to go with a high-end mac or high end PC, I eventually went with a top spec MBP (17” 2.93 ghz). This was a difficult decision to make, not to mention expensive.
I figured - the Mac was the winner although lower spec then a similar priced PC it had a major advantage – to run Windows XP (which I use for some creative and recreational purposes).
I am now very frustrated and angry – the peace of mind, stability and straightforward Mac ideals that I admire have been non existent so far. It has been extremely stressful!
Problem 1 – when setting up boot camp I wanted to go with the NTFS option, so I partioned 50 gig of space. But after choosing this, the only confirmation option that was displayed was for FAT so I was left wondering if that was correct? (I was very slow and methodically following instructions).
*Problem 2* – After boot camp was set up, there was not Ethernet driver in the Boot Camp / OS Install Disk so I couldn’t connect to the net. It is just lucky one of my neighbours has an unsecured wireless network that I ‘hopped’ onto, to download the driver.
*Problem 3* – HEAT!!! when running an old spec video game (Unreal Anthology) the MBP became incredibly HOT. So much so that I had to stop after a few minutes because it was clear that damage was being caused. I have since read on other discussions that this is a problem many other MBP users running boot camp are experiencing.
*Problem 4* – I downloaded the Boot Camp 2.1 update hoping this would help, but all it did was cut all the sound and disable the keyboard apple keys. I had to uninstall boot camp then reinstall the older version to get the sound back (no ethernet connection again!)
I am extremely upset – I feel I have been miss sold. I brought the Mac with Apples reassurances (and their sales patter of ‘oh yeah, your windows programs will work better on a mac’) only to find this is NOT THE CASE.
I hope I have been doing something wrong, because then I can sleep better knowing I have just spent a lot of money on the right tool I need for my job. At the moment I have a nasty feeling of painful regret and stress – everything I hoped to avoided when buying a mac.
If any apple support people or other users can help I would really appreciate any feedback you may have. Thanks in advance…

Hi I too just bought a MacBook Pro 2 weeks ago. I settled on a Mac as I had so much problems running Mac OS on my Dell laptop.
I had OS 10.5 running on my work Dell Latitude D520, it was not a hack but a genuine retail version of Leopard. But I had issues with the keyboard / track pad not working, so I had to use external keyboard / mouse. Not fun on a laptop.
I’m now running OS 10.5.6 and XP 64 bit on my MacBook Pro. I chose XP 64 bit so I can take advantage of the 64bit CPU and the 4 Gig of RAM in my MacBook Pro.
It took me 2 days to get all the drivers to work properly well I say all, the bluetooth does not work but I don’t use bluetooth so don’t really care.
I chose XP 64 bit over Vista 64 bit as Visa is the worst OS Microsoft have come up with to date.
*If any Apple guys is looking at this please let me know if Apple will ever produce XP 64 drivers, I think I’m not the only one interested in the drivers.*

Problem 1
The Mac will only format FAT32 as it cannot write NTFS only read it. You need to choose NTFS when you are installing from the Windows CD, you can still convert your FAT32 system to NTFS within Windows.

I had the same problem but then I was using a non-supported OS.

My laptop runs a bit hot at times but to me all laptops run hot maybe more so Mac laptops. You are running the 2.93 GHz so I guess it does run hotter than my 2.66 GHz.

Problems using vista with boot camp

Hello,
I am currently running vista with boot camp and I have been experiencing a few issues. First on the windows partition it claims that no sound driver is installed-is there an easy fix to this? Also I have been trying to plug in my WD My Book USB external hard drive but I cannot find it to use...although in the device manager it claims that it is working properly. Thanks guys

When you first installed Windows did you install the drivers that came on your Leopard Installation disk?
If not then boot into Windows and get to the Vista Desktop. At this time, insert your Leopard Installation disk in the drive. This should automatically begin installing the Boot Camp 2.0 hardware drivers on your partition. Once completed, you will be asked to reboot into Windows and then you should be all set.

I just finished installing window 7 64 bit and put the serial key. (I started up Window 7 for 1st time)(I was able to access both mac and windows)
But when i take a look in my window, i did not find the Boot Camp Assistant(Which is supposed to be in the taskbar)
Can anyone help me with this?
Problem:Can not find boot camp assisstant on the taskbar in Window 7(Which should be, since my friends has it) nor in the control panel.

Bootcamp Assistant is what you used to create the Bootcamp partition. It will not show up in Windows. If you mean the Boocamp Control Panel, did you install the Windows Support software?

Macbook Pro running Windows with Boot Camp, wanting to use iMac as second monitor.

I am using a Macbook Pro that is running Windows with Boot Camp. I want to connect it to my iMac so that I can use the iMac as a second monitor.
If it is not possible, I also have a TV that I could use using an HDMI, however when I tried this my Macbook Pro running Windows 8.1 did not detect it in the Display Settings.
What are my options? I just want to use my iMac or TV as a second monitor!!

Win7 can't install boot camp 3.1 update.. says it's needs 3.0 first

i just (successfully) installed WIn 7 on my mac pro..
i formatted the partition with boot camp assistant 3.0.1 on the Mac and then proceeded with the guided instructions and got WIn 7 installed.
i've read that this Boot Camp 3.1 updater is highly recommended for Win 7, but when i try to run the .exe file in windows it says it can't run without Boot Camp 3..
i thought i had boot camp 3.. (3.0.1)... but that was on the mac.. do i need it in windows?
if so, where do you find an installer for boot camp 3... google only turns up a few torrent sites..

You missed the part where you are in Windows and insert OS X SL DVD and run Apple SETUP to install the device drivers and services.
I think it is foolish to install yr old drivers first, no other motherboard would require you to, but that is req'd to use the (also old and somewhat out of date) Boot Camp 3.1.
New Macs actually do have newer driver versions (but is still kept to 3.0.x something).
You will still need REalTek audio drivers. YOu need Apple's for HAL, Time, and a startup OS selector, and to support sleep and other power settings.

Unable to install Boot Camp 2.1 Updater

I've attempted several times to update Boot Camp to version 2.1. Each time I try to run the update I get the following message:
"The installer encountered errors before Boot Camp could be configured. To retry these operations at a later time. please run the installer again".
I've deleted and downloaded the installer on several occasions only to be confronted with the same message. I've also run the "repair installation" program on the existing version of Boot Camp to see if there is an error that prevents the update working. I've also followed the advice in the following Support Article:

Running msiexec /update from the Command Line in XP results in the same error message I quoted above.
Has anyone got any idea how I can resolve this? I'd be grateful for any help offered.

There are lots of things that cause the installer not to cycle through. The two major are 1) a conflict of some kind with a display driver. 2) a conflict with the language of your cuurently running Boot Camp 2.0.
If its your Display driver you need to go to -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware Tab -> Device Manager -> Display Adaptors.
Look at how many Display adaptors you have. You really only need one(which sometimes is there twice). If you have more than one then you probably have a program like "GoToMyPc" or LogMeIn" which has put it's display adaptor there. If that is the case then you need to first unistall the program and then in the Display Adaptors section -> del the driver.
Test if this is the source of your prblem by running the installer again.
(P.S) there are a few PC video games and other programs that install Display drivers so if you dont have either of the Remote Access Programs I mentions be aware that that the conflicting Display Driver could be comming from another program.
If your problem is a conflict in the language of your running version of Boot Camp then you'll need to do the following
in Windows goto Start ->Run -> type "regedit" click OK -> in the new window go to EDIT -> Find -> type "Boot Camp Services.
The Boot Camp setting should come up if they did not come up try another search with Boot-Camp Services. Look at the language settings. If you run in English it should have a Value of 0X00000409 (1033). If it does not then modify the info to match. This only works if your set to English. If not then you will need to investigate the values for your language.

Boot camp assistant error update ROM

I apologize for cross-posting; I had this over at the Snow Leopard forum and it was suggested I try putting this over here.
I have a Mac Pro 4.1 using 10.6.5 and BC Setup Assistant 3.0.1.
I'd like to enlarge the space on my BC partition of my startup disk, but I have the familiar boot camp assistant error which tells the user that in order to install boot camp you must update the Boot ROM Firmware. I've already updated the firmware to 1.4 (MP4.0081.B07; SMC Version 1.39f5), so this gets me nowhere. What's a little different about my problem than most of the others I've seen is that I have an early 2009 Mac Pro, not a laptop, AND journaling is enabled on all my disks.
I tried downgrading to 10.5.6 by installing it on another drive and starting up from that. It shows that Boot Camp Setup Assistant is version 2.0, but still it tells me that I need upgrade the Boot ROM Firmware.
From within Windows I installed Boot Camp 3.1 and 3.2 and restarted both times. I've run Disk Utility and verified and/or repaired Disk Permissions on startup disks; so, too, Verify Disk.
I've tried installing Boot Camp on a new, blank, journaled drive. I get the same update your firmware message.
Any help you can offer over this American Thanksgiving Holiday will be greatly appreciated.

current situation
- I've recovered from external drive (mountain lion 10.8.1 ) which i prepared by Lion Diskmaker before.
Current issues:
1) I have Recovery HD but when I boot from it - Reinstall Mac OS X option is not working
2) I have EFI password and won't be able to clear it as well as reset PRAM
3) Boot Camp Assistant is not working as well with the error in the subject
Any ideas how to fix all of these?

Paragon-Software CampTune $20 can resize.
But I would just put Windows on its own hard drive instead.
Has nothing to do with OS X. Your drive's free space and how fragmented can be an issue when creating Windows partition.
The error message is in error itself and not helpful or accurate.

Boot Camp 3.1 update silently fails

Ever since the Boot Camp 3.1 update was released, I've been trying to install it Every time, it silently fails, whether I'm using Software Update, or downloading and installing the package manually from Apple.com. I'm running Boot Camp 3.0 and it's fine, but it puzzles me why I can't get it updated to 3.1.
Has anyone run into this issue?

I was having this problem as well - the installer would pause then crash ("aka The Program Needs to Close") every time I tried. In the general category of "Suspect anything not from Apple", I unplugged everything FireWire/USB and uninstalled the driver for my DisplayLink external graphics adapter.
The bootcamp 3.1 update then installed just fine. (And the DisplayLink driver reinstalled just fine.)
I expect that Apple hasn't tested their installer with a wide range of third-party drivers and hardware. Get rid of any hardware or drivers you can that are not bog-standard Apple or Microsoft and see what happens.

Boot Camp 2.1 Update: Error, would not install

I tried to update my Boot Camp to 2.1.
The reasoning being, that my dimmer button, my volume button, etc does not work on my Windows Vista Ultimate Side.
Other short cut keys worked (i tried): ie: Print screen via 'fn'altF11, etc
However, when I installed it, the following message appeared.
"the installer encountered errors before Boot Camp could be configured.
To retry these operations at a later time, please run th installer again.
Click Finish to exit the installer."
How can I install the Boot Camp 2.1 updater?

First, backup. Files and system with Ultimate's build-in programs or 3rd party.
run chkdsk for starters. you may want to dabble even more with msconfig and look at your logs, see if there are errors, what startup items and services are running.
I could not install BC 2.1 64-bit even though I have 64-bi9t OS and hardware, maybe because older Mac Pro has 32-bit EFI.
I'd look at uninstalling and reinstalling BC 2.0 and leave well enough alone and focus on just the small issues for now.
Oh, and WinClone is another method and free for backing up NTFS partitions from within OS X worth looking into.
I have not read of the error you got, off hand, that I recall reading.
I really think we need a BC 2.2 at this point in time.

I have been an ardent user of aperture for years now and got used to the great workflow. Ever since version 1 I have been enjoying working with aperture. It is the workflow that kept me from changing.
I got a new MacPro 12 GB ram, 4TB HDD my library mostly indexed files sits on a raided 2TB for maximum of comfort. I did this in an effort to keep me from writing the posts I writing lately. I do not have the time rally to do this but reality is something different.
Today I am working on a job I need to finish quickly and in aperture workflow manner. Boot camp 3.1 update keeps returning in apple software update

On my 12" MacBook, I have installed the Boot Camp 3.1 update. When I open the Apple boot camp control panel and click About, it says 3.1. However, every time I open Apple software update, the 274MB Boot Camp 3.1 update is always there, even if I reinstall it again and again. What could be causing this?

Ok, so I installed drivers from the system restore disks that came with my laptop, and the error message changed, still doesn't work, but progress is good, right?
Now it says:
"The installed product does not match the installation source(s). Until a matching source is provided or the installed product and source are synchronized, this action can not be performed.
Contact your administrator or product vendor for assistance. If there is a matching installation source, type it below or click Browse to locate it"
Now, what on earth does that mean? In the test box, the default path is "C:\ProgramData\Apple\Installer Cache\Boot Camp 3.0.0\", which doesn't exist on my computer. When I click "browse" it lets me look for a .msi file, which I cannot find and do not know where to look for.
If I click OK, another error pops up saying:
"The file 'D:\Boot Camo\Drivers\Apple\BootCamp.msi' is not a valid installtion package for the product Boot Camp Services. Try to find the installtion package 'BootCamp.msi' in a folder from which you can install Boot Camp Services"
Please, please, please, if anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this, Iwould be very obliged. Thanks again in advance!

Graphic problem in Windows with Boot Camp?

I only just noticed this today when I was editing some pictures in Photoshop using Windows (Boot Camp). My version is Windows 8 64-bit and the Photoshop is CS 6 but I suspect the same thing would happen even if I were using Windows 7.
Whenever I view an image in Firefox, Chrome, Windows Picture Viewer or any other program besides Photoshop, the image is always displayed as it is and appears as crisp and sharp as it should. For example, if I load a picture that's 600x600 pixels outside of Photoshop, it would look exactly like it is - at 600x600.
But once I open it in Photoshop, and if it happens to be a very big picture (which it is for me, most of the time), the picture would look resized (i.e. smaller), but the Photoshop navigator would still say it's displayed at 100% magnification. So a 2000x2000 picture would basically look half its real size but still be at a zoom setting of 100% according to Photoshop.
That in itself isn't the problem, but trying to edit/crop the image is. If I were to select a part of the picture and resize it to, say, 100x100 pixels, the final image would be a bit blurry, even if I save it at "most high" quality. That obviously makes my image "un-usable" because the quality is so terrible. This doesn't happen at all on a computer without retina display but on mine it makes the task of editing images in Photoshop frustrating and pointless.
I really think it's an issue with retina display's native resolution not being supported in any version of Windows, so I'm hoping anyone who uses a Macbook Pro RD, Windows AND Photoshop could help me get around this problem.

Did you grab and install the graphic driver from Nvidia?
Apple or even Microsoft driver are not always the best.
Boot Camp 5.0 drivers to start just to enable the various chipsets and basic support.

The Windows 8 installer does not contain the correct graphics driver for your computer. You'll need to attach the USB media that contains the Boot Camp drivers during installation to address this issue. See this article for more information.

I had problems with windows 7 after the installation using boot camp. The GT 650M was not showing up as the graphics adapter. I fixed the problem by inserting my windows support software CD a second time. I did not let it use auto run. I went into the Windows 7 directory and then into the Nvidia directory and ran setup.exe. This installed the Nvidia drivers for me. If this works correctly, you will have an Nvidia control panel available to you. I set the resolution to 2880x1800. I also set windows to 200% magnification.
I think what happens is that after you install windows, and then run the windows support CD, the main boot camp setup script seems to stop on the nvidia driver install--everything else installed correctly.

Problems with bluetooth in Boot Camp

I recently installed windows xp with bootcamp on my macbook and the bluetooth is acting weird while in windows. It will pair with my devices (Phone: Samsung D-407, Headset: Plantronics Explorer 220) but in the bluetooth connections window it will only show them as connected for a second or two and my devices won't work. I did install Service Pack 3 for windows and I don't know if that affected it or not because I didn't try the bluetooth before updating. Would that cause any problems or is it something else?

It may be too late, but have you tried going into the drivers using Vista's control panel and either removing the drivers or reverting to precious drivers?
