Problem running JSTL in Tomcat 4.0

This is the error that I get when I try to access my JSP page:
java.lang.ClassCastException: org.apache.xerces.jaxp.DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl

I'm using the xml and core libraries and I should let you know that yesterday it was working just fine. Today, without changing a thing it just started giving me this error. Please help!
P.S. I've been working with JBuilder 6.0 and Tomcat 4.0. But I've also tried using Tomcat on its own and it gives me the same error message. Thanks in advance for any help you could give me.

I've always preferred working directly with tomcat with an ant script that way you're sure of what you are doing.
This is recurrent problem : you've got jars that need to be in your project classpath to compile your application but that must not be deployed : ie : it must not be copied in your WEB-INF/lib directory of your webapp in tomcat. (servlet.jar's another one, or even junit.jar if you unit test)
Actually you can define this in JBuilder : go to your webapp's properties window (right click on webapp -> properties) and go into dependencies tab (i suppose that its called that way, mine's in french ;-). You will find the list of libraries that you have defined for your application. Just define xerces as to be excluded from your webapp for deployment.

Simple setup problems with JSTL and Tomcat

Hi all, I'm having some problems getting JSTL to work the 1st time. JSTL setup seems to be a common problem for relative newbies, but having read previous threads, I still haven't been able to solve my problem so hopefully someone can help:
the jstl.jar and standard.jar are in my WEB-INF/lib directory, so I don't think it's a classpath problem.
My jsp page has the following at the top:
<%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jstl/core" prefix="c" %>Later, I reference a bean var with :
<c:out value="My var is : ${var.property}"/>In my web.xml I have:

I think this note from the JSTL mailing list by Shawn Bayern, one of the lead developers of Jakarta JSTL and the author of "JSTL In Action", will clarify it:

Don't put that <taglib> in your web.xml. All the books tell you to do it, but Shawn Bayern has the right answer. The URI should be the one that's in the TLD JAR .tld files.

When running the same example, by creating a local server in Eclipse(creating new Server connection pointing to same Tomcat 6.0 installation) it runs fine without any error.

Problem running car demo jwsdp-1.3,Tomcat 5.0

Hello. I am having problems running the car demo on the jwsdp-1.3 with Tomcat 5.0.
I get the following error message:
"A jar file containing the Servlet 2.3 and JSP1.2 classes is required to compile
carstore. Please define the property servlet.jar in your build.properties file and ensure
that the file exists."
I replaced the jsf EA 4 with the beta, and cleared out the cache in catalina as per the
installation documents. I am probably missing something here. I checked my path,
(I am using windows xp) and made sure the jsf directory was in the path.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I changed the path to the tomcat 5.0 that came with the jwsdp-1.3.
However, I am still getting the same error message. I have checked the build.properties file, the path, the path where ant is located, and the path is pointing to the jwsdp-1.3 directory.
I have been working with the examples in the java web services tutorial, and for the most part have not had any problems running the examples using the jwsdp-1.3, ant and tomcat 5.0(except for CH 11, on the jaxb examples)

Problems running 1.4.1_01 vm under FreeBSD in linux compatibility mode.

I currently have a FreeBSD 4.6 box running in linux compatibility mode. We are attempting to get Tomcat 4.1.12 installed. The problem I am currently experiencing is the following:
when logged in as root, java executes perfectly.
when logged in as any non-root user, java generates an abort trap at start up, and prints the following VM error message :

I installed the jdk as root. the JDK in question is the linux tar script one. I have the linux_base 7.1 packages installed for FreeBSD, and have the linux emulation module turned on.

I'm having a similar problem, but mine involves Tomcat/JSTL. I'm running FreeBSD 4.7, with JDK 1.4.1_01-b01 (Linux compatiblity mode enabled). The tomcat(4.1.12) server crashes with simplest of jsp pages that issues the following jstl declaration:

When tomcat tries to serve this page, tomcat crashes with the following diagnostic message:

Communication problem between NetBeans and Tomcat

hi!
i got a quite mysterious problem. here is what happens:
- i start NetBeans 5.5.1 (the first time)
- i want to debug my JSF-Project, the Debugger starts
- After a few seconds the debugger waits for tomcat (it sais: "Waiting for Tomcat...") and tomcat starts
- Again after a few seconds the tomcat-debugger-output sais "Tomcat startet in 3333 ms".
okay.
when i enter http://localhost:8084/ in my browser i get the tomcat homepage, so the server has definitely started! But nothing happens in NetBeans and nothing happens with my project....
In the lower-right corner i see this blue working-bar that sais "deploying project" but nothing happens. The Project-Debugger-Output still sais "Waiting for Tomcat..." but nothing happens...
And after something around 3 minutes (i guess it's a timeout) i get the error "Starting of Tomcat failed." But is HAS started, i can login to the Administration-Area in my browser!
so i guess there is a communication problem between netbeans an tomcat. Netbeans waits for a message from tomcat but tomcat doesn't send it..or netbeans doesn't understand it.
But the story goes on:
When i press the debug-button a second time it takes only a few seconds till i get the message: "Tomcat server port 8084 already in use". OF COURSE! Because Tomcat has already startet and can't be stoped by NetBeans.
i'm trying to solve this problem for 4 days now, so i would be very happy if anyone has an idea where to start/continue the search...

As i wrote before, the same problem occured for me. I have found a solution which is : Go to tools menu and then select options . In the proxy info, select No Proxy.

Note: When I configure my application on the Tomcat 5.5 and java 1.5 then it runs fine. But the problem arises when I compile my code on the java 1.4 and run on the Tomcat 5.0

Character encoding problem using XSLT and Tomcat on Linux

I have an application running on a Tomcat 4.1.18 application server that applies XSLT transformations to DOM objects using standard calls to javax.xml.transform API. The JDK is J2SE 1.4.1_01.
It is all OK while running on a development enviroment (which is Windows NT 4.0 work station), but when I put it in the production enviroment (which is a red hat linux 8.0), it comes up with some kind of encoding problem: the extended characters (in spanish) are not shown as they should.
The XSL stylesheets are using the ISO-8859-1 encoding, but I have also tried with UTF-8.
These stylesheets are dynamicly generated from a JSP:

Probably you need to set your LANG OS especific environment variable to spanish.
Try adding this line:
export LANG=es_ES
to your tomcat/bin/catalina.sh, and restart tomcat.

Problems running servlet due to missing classes?

Hi everyone,
I am doing a project which requires me to convert a java coding into a servlet. This java coding I am working on is some kind of location based service which tracks people (receiving an argument of a string as IP). It imports an external SDK called Ekahau SDK (some off the shelve product). Now I wish to convert it into a servlet so that the function that the java coding performs can be run from a webpage i created.
I have previously posted a thread on this forum called "Converting java coding into servlets?" when I had trouble compiling the servlet. Now that I could compile the servlet already, I still have problems running the servlet from my browser.
The webserver I am using is Apache Tomcat. Previously I was trying Apache HTTP server but since now I need to use servlet, I have shifted to Tomcat instead. I have been getting these "java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:" when running the servlet from the browser. From the previous thread, I got suggestions from the replies saying that I need to put the jar files I need into my "C:\Tomcat\webapps\try\WEB-INF\lib" directory. I have been looking for the missing jar files from the internet and putting them into my "C:\Tomcat\webapps\try\WEB-INF\lib", but each time after adding a new jar file, I get another new "java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:". Are the missing jar files really the problems? Cause it seems a bit weird to me that I need some many jar files which I dont even know why I need them for.

Well, it's kind of logical that as you put more jar files (classes) in Tomcat, it changes the error to ask for the classes (inside a jar) it cannot find.
There was a good class->jar finder on the internet some years ago, but i don't remember the address. Try looking for that and search all the missing classes (NotDefined) and their correspondig jar files.

Hi ! I have a similar problem, well, it's along the same line ...
I'm using NetBeans 4.1, and i've coded a servlet. Using NetBeans to launch my servlet (with the bundled Tomcat 5.5.7) works fine, however i need to deploy my application unto a Tomcat 5.5.9 server.
Thus, i copied the WAR file generated by NetBeans into the Tomcat 5.5.9 webapps directory, and Tomcat expands it.
Problem is when i run my JSP pages with the form tags, they do not work on the Tomcat 5.5.9 environment. Anyone knows why?
(These work on the NetBeans Tomcat bundle 5.5.7)

I have new a folder classes in webapps\root\WEB-INF\,and put the .class

can't run ,it give me a error than http:404 not found.

Hi,
Make sure the class is in classpath or in WEB-INF/classes folder and make an entry for servlet tag in web.xml in WEB-INF folder.

Problem in configuring Apache Tomcat Server

Hi, I am facing problem in configuring Apache Tomcat server. I have downloaded its version 4.1.18 from the Internet. After unzipping and installing it, I have enabled the Root Context, enabled the Invoker Servlet, haven't changed the port to 80 from default 8080, have turned on the Servlet Reloading, have set the Java_Home variable in autoexec.bat, and have changed the DOS memory setting to 4096.
Also, the concerned lines in my autoexec.bat file look like this:

set java_home=c:\jdk1.2

Still, after having done all this, when I start the server using startup.bat (which happens without any problems) and type in http://localhost:8080/ on the browser to test the server, nothing happens. It doesn't show me the Tomcat Welcome screen. I get an error page saying "This page is not available". Why? Where am I going wrong?

2) set tomcat_home-c:\jakarta-tomcat-4.1.18
Is the minus-sign after tomcat_home also in the autoexec.bat?
Replace it with an equals-sign
3) When you run startup.bat, is a new command window opened and are the following three lines displayed at the end? It should stay open, otherwise something is wrong (unless running as a service).
