Problem running Office 2004 applications

When I try to run any office 2004 for mac application I get the error:
Microsoft Word: launch failed with error code -2855 (cfragStdFolderErr) for application /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Microsoft Word\n
It only happens with office 2004. All of my other applications seem to run perfectly.
Can anyone help me with this problem (i.e. offer a possible solution)?
Thanks
Apple Macbook 13.3" Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Apple Macbook 13.3"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I can't run anything associated with office 2004. I tried downloading the 11.3.4 update and when I try to run it I still get the same error.
I should have mentioned earlier, the error only shows up in the console; when I click on an office 2004 application, the icon bounces once and does nothing.
Thanks for the ideas...Do you think I should reinstall os X. I've only had my computer for 2 wks, so it would be easy to back up my personal stuff and reinstall. I do most of my work on office. I can't do anything without it.

Since today I can't run any of the office 2004 products.
When i try to start enthourage from the dock or from finder, the icon bounces a few times, but no message or any reaction.
The same occurs when i start word, excel, powerpoint. All the other programs (not microsoft) work correctly.
Any Idea how i can fix this problem?

    Hi eljebee,
Did you just update to QT 7.2, or installed the Java SE 6.0 Release 1 Developer Preview 6?
    Check this link:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070713094450677
In many cases, the problem can be solved by simply updating prebinding again, which happens automatically when you re-apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 combo updater, as recommended.
    Good Luck

For the rare few, such as myself, who have some Office 2004 or older documents that fail to translate well in Office 2011, another option is to run Office 2004 in Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) installed in Parallels:

Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2004-macword/word-2004-wil l-not-open-or-save-documents/b04eb870-9b0d-4f3b-bb47-b122301e36f6
So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?

Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
    Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
    #2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk  of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
    #3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

    That's it really.

I just installed the Lion operating system, basically to upgrade my iPhone. I didn't realize that my Microsoft Office 2004 application would no longer work. I have been using Word for my writing and I receive most of my emails with Word attachments. I have been using Apple products for years, always touting their reliability and customer service. I am not a techie, I just want to be able to do what I do on the computer and Apple always fulfilled my needs. Now I am told because of some operating system gobbledygook, I have to go out and purchase new software to use Word. This is despicable. I see no particular benefit to using Lion, but I do see a lot of detriments. Apple now seems to have turned into Microsoft, making software obsolete so they can make more money and to **** with the customer. You can be sure that my next computer will be a PC. I have completely lost confidence in Apple.

I seem to never tire of saying this. It was for Apple when they first announced 10.7 to disclose this. Yes, it was widely reported -- or rather, rumored -- but not by Apple. And many people who have gotten caught by this assumed that Apple itself would have told them beforehand about the loss of this very important feature which they had come to rely on. As far as I know, not even in fine print, does this appear anywhere on the Lion announcement or any of its links.
I am not saying Apple had to continue Rosetta in Lion, or forever, just that if it was going to be dropped, it should have been made known.
As relative "insiders" we should not forget that many people don't have the time, habit or interest to do this kind of research. I think it is a breach of trust that Apple has never directly made this announcement or given people the opportunity to decide beforehand if giving up their PPC apps for a new OS is a worthwhile tradeoff.

  • Problems installing Office 2004 on macbook

I've been trying to help a friend install Microsoft Office 2004 on her MacBook. When she enters the disc into the drive and goes to the setup assistant the assistant becomes unresponsive halfway through. When she tries to drag the MS Office 2004 file from the CD to the Applications folder, it works for a little and then stops, giving this message:
"The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in batang.ttf could not be read or written. Error code -36"
Is that an error with the CD or the actual CD drive... any help would be greatly appreciated!

You might try repairing the permissions before running the installer.
I just installed Office 2004 not long ago and I remember the installer seemed to hang a bit. I'm not sure what the error code is but the batang.ttf is a font. It's possible that the part of you install disc is damaged in that area? Might try cleaning off the disc even if it looks clean.

  • Question getting Rosetta to run Office 2004

I am trying to get Office 2004 to work on a new iMac 7". The user does not know which of the 20 copies of Office are his product id so I need to copy the office folder over to his new Mac. When I do this and click on an application it starts terminal. When I install Office from the cd it runs fine with Rosetta but since I copy his installation over it tries to run terminal. Any thoughts how i can force it to use Rosetta to run? I thought I could select the app and click get info and pick use Rosetta check-box but there is none.

but as so many people have found out if you have the Office cd's and serial numbers you still cannot figure out which copy is installed.
Which seems pretty dumb. You can call up "About Word" (or Excel, PowerPoint) and it will show you the product ID number you were assigned by the online registration, but not the product key you used. So it is just about impossible to determine which product keys have already been used.
That said, it doesn't matter what CD you use to install Office. The keys are not on the disk. The installer uses a checksum that validates whether or not the product key you enter is good. The Adobe CSx disks and most other software is the same way. It would cost an absolute fortune to actually press a unique disk which contains an ID that matches the activation ID sticker that comes in the package. So your only real issue is trying to figure out which product ID to use.
So I guess the answer is there is no way to tell OSX to use Rosetta to run Office?
As I said, you don't have a choice. Office 2004 contains only PPC code and so has to run in Rosetta. That's why there's no option to choose it.

  • Problems with Office 2004 on Leopard

I'm having trouble with Excel 2004 since i upgraded to leopard. Keyboard quits working and then the program crashes. I checked the Microsoft site and they seem to think the problem is with the OS Leopard. Anyone else having issues with Excell or Word?

Its easy to blame OS X without giving a reason why - in cases like this the easiest thing to do is to lay the blame at the feet of OS X without any substantiation.
Is your OS fully updated or are are there further updates you can download? There may be, for example a keyboard firmware update you need to install.
There may also be some updates for Office you can install.
Also bear in mind that Office 2004 is not Intel native and uses [Rosetta Emulation|http://www.apple.com/rosetta>. Upgrading to Office 2008 may also be worth considering as it is Intel ready.

  • Problem running a sample application in sun app server PE 8

    Hi,
I am trying to run the petstore application with oracle 9i. It's a demo application that comes with app server. I set the classpath in the app server to the oracle driver files. I am able to deploy it successfully. But, when I run it it gives me this error:
java.sql.SQLException: Error in allocating a connection. Cause: Class name is wrong or classpath is not set for : oracle.jdbc.xa.client.OracleXADataSource
I am using oracle thin driver.
    Rgds,

Yes, I am deploying the application as an ear.You would need to configure the JAR as a module within the EAR. If it is required only by a web app, you could add it to the WEB-INF/lib for the web app.

  • Problems running an JAR application

Hello, i'm using this command, in a Linux shell, to trying to run my application
    java --classpath "/root/Desktop/a/ESTGF_3D_Final_Window.jar" -Xms512m -Xmx512m -XX:PermSize=512m -XX:MaxPermSize=640m -XX:+640m WFPlayerFrame
and i get the following error:
    ** ERROR **: file ../../../libjava/jni/gtk-peer/gnu_java_awt_peer_gtk_GtkFramePeer.c: line 174 (Java_gnu_java_awt_peer_gtk_GtkFramePeer_nativeSetIconImageFromDecoder): assertion failed: (pixbuf != NULL)
    aborting...
    Aborted
Can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong...

It depends on whether or not you wrote the jar file you are attempting to run. The application is failing because of an assertion error, but you can disable those on the command line. Add the following option parameter to the java command you have there..
    -disableassertions
Assertions are normally disabled by default. But I understand that it is possible to activate them programmatically and I think that is what has been done in this case. I suppose. It makes one wonder why, perhaps there was good reason, but not knowing anything about the app, hard to say.
