Problem saving pdfs

Any ideas, anyone? I am preparing artwork for big display walls, CS3, and am working in 10% scale. Images are in 720 ppi, embedded so that they will give 72 ppi output in actual size. When saving as pdf and opening the file in Acrobat I get an error message that the file is not pdf compatible, even though it is saved as pdf, and the image is blank. I have often done this before on CS2 without problems. Was ist los?

The stuff is going to be viewed at about arm's length in a narrow corridor. And there's quite a bit of fine detail so I don't dare reduce the resolution.
I eventually solved the problem by making the pdfs out of InDesign, placing Illy pdf compatible files. O.k., I get heavy files, but that's what I expected. About 200 MB for a 112 x 170 cm image in 72 ppi with jpg High compression. Like I said, the original was in 10% scale, hence 720 ppi to alllow for scaling up in final output.
I eventually managed to coax a pdf direct out of Illy by saving as pdf compatible, opening the Illy file in Acrobat and saving from there, but the file was nearly twice as heavy as out of InDesign (398 MB which I knew straight away was ridiculous. I know all about compression for pdf - have done a lot of experimenting and a lot of display work - but this is the first time things have gone badly wrong and also the first time I have tried doing it out of CS3. Never had any problems with CS2.
Although the problem is "solved" in a roundabout way I am still open to further suggestions. There's definitely something fishy going on.

I have problems saving pdf files in the web when I use Safari.  I don't have this problem with firefox.

do they save ok if Safari - Preferences - Security - Allow all other plug-ins is unchecked ?
If so, likely an adobe or other pdf plugin
Re-check the setting above & quit any browsers,
Look in this folder by triple-clicking the line below, then ctrl-clicking it & choosing Services - Open
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
remove anything with pdf in the filename & test again
Sometimes, plug-ins can be in the User Library folder :

  • Problem Saving PDF with Opacity Masks in Illustrator CS3

I'm having trouble exporting an Illlustrator CS3 file to PDF. I have two layers in the the .ai file that have opacity masks applied. When I save the file as a PDF, the two layers with opacity masks seem to disappear (or they are flattened down to white/100% transparency.) They do not show on screen nor when printing. I've tried opening the saved PDF in Illustrator to investigate, and the layers are still there, but with no opacity mask. Where am I going wrong? I've tried a new file with a simple shape and a simple opacity mask, and it exports fine to PDF. So something is wrong with my file set up, but I can't pinpoint what! I have also tried exporting to various versions of PDF, and nothing works. Help!
    Screen cap from Illustrator:
    Screen cap of PDF:
Correct (Illustrator) with subtle starburst effect:
    Wrong (Acrobat PDf), no starburst!
    Thanks for looking!

Not sure what's going on in your file, but it's definately having a problem with the Steaks layer. Trying to release the clipping mask and ungrouping all the layers is having a problem so it might have something to do with the way the streaks layer was built.
Using your file I replaced the streaks layer and put a starburst that's clipped to the icon shape. I've attached two files. One is for Illustrator CC so you can retain the gradient fill on the stroke which is only available in newer versions of Illustrator. The other has the starburst I created expanded so that you can open the file and retain the startburst look.

  • Problem saving pdf from preview

Since upgrading to 10.4.3 I have noticed that preview behaves strangely when re-saving pdf files. If I preview a pdf document and the use the "save" function to make a copy, the copied file is about twice the size of the original, and the Table of Contents data seems to be lost. I've noticed this for files produced from the TeX package, such as are on the physics electronic archives (http://arxiv/org). Any explanation would be appreciated! I realise that I could just save a copy directly, but it is sometimes handy to preview first, and I am a little disturbed to discover that preview appears to be changing pdf files unnecessarily when saving them.
    12" powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I can't help you, but I'm having the same problem with version 9.4.1
I have been trying to "save as" some .pdf documents (monthly statements) from a financial institution, but it does not work when I right click on the file, or when I right click on the document.  Like you, I click on the "disc" icon, and nothing happens.  I was able to save these in August and prior, but not now.  It makes no sense.
When I open these documents, they appear in a web window, not in the Reader software, so there is no tool bar showing "file", "edit", "view", etc, like what appearsw in Acrobat.  I'm stumped.  I posted this several days before you, but no replies yet.  I'm not real eager to pay $39 for the adobe help desk just yet.

  • Problems saving pdfs in IE "not enough disk space"

After updating Adobe Reader from 9.... to Adobe Reader X 10.1.23 I cannot save a pfd file opened with a browser, wether using Internet Explorer 8 nor the actual firefox. The error message is something like .." not enough disk space" , what's not right!!!
    I reinstalled 'Reader X - no solution
I deinstalled Reader X and installed the old Version 9 - saving is no problem!!
What can I do ??? Thanks..

when you make a dvd using dvdsp, you need to build it on a local drive before dvdsp can burn the dvd.  So more than likely, .... there's "not enough space" on that drive.
You should always have a minimum of 10% free space on ALL drives and at least 20% free space on your startup drive.  Having less space can create all sorts of problems and the data on the drive can get corrupted and unusable.

  • Problems saving PDF comments in Reader X

    Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this behavior?
I created a PDF from FrameMaker 8 using Acrobat 8. A collegue reviewed the file and made comments using the Comment and Markup Tools feature in Acrobat Reader 9. Later he upgraded to Reader X and commented in the same file again. When he saved the file from Reader X, all of the comments (aproximately 95 of them) were wiped out of the PDF. Operating system is Windows XP, service pack 3.
Is there a limit to the number of comments/markups that can be made? Could this be a version compaibility issue?
    Thanks,
    Darci

Please repost in the Acrobat SDK forum.

  • Reader, IE8, Win7, and Oracle - Problems saving PDF

Hi there! I have an odd annoying issue. In short, my problem is that I cannot save PDF's generated by Orace in a browser window on my Windows 7 PC. My Windows XP machine does this just fine. Both are using IE8.
My work uses Oracle for a good bit of our tasks. I frequently have to save generated PDF's from the Oracle system. The work flow is like this:
    1) Login to Oracle in IE8. Then open Oracle via IE8. This process opens up a Java window that houses the actual Oracle app.
    2) Generate file from within Oracle. This opens another IE8 window in which I can choose the format of the file (RTF or PDF). When I click next it will generate the file...if a PDF it will normally open inside the browser window.
    3) At this point on my Windows XP/IE8 machine, I can click save and a dialog box opens allowing me to choose location and name for the file. On my Windows 7/IE8 machine, when I click save, nothing happens.
If I change the settings in Reader to dissalow opening the file in the browser (forcing Reader to open), I can navigate to "Save As" and save the file. This just requires several more clicks (and to anyone that has used Oracle, you know that the last thing I need is several more clicks for a task).
I can print fine, so I can use a PDF printer to "save" the file, but again, this is more clicks.
If I navigate to a PDF on the web (I used the IRS as a test), I can save just fine, same as on my XP machine.
I've tried disabling UAC in Win7, doesn't help. I've tried adding my company's Oracle website to the trusted list, doesn't help (PDFs come up in an Unkonwn Zone no matter what I do). I tried manually enabling every item under the security settings of IE8 and it didn't help. I've tried running IE8 as an administrator, didn't help.
Thanks in advance for the help.

I found a decent workaround (not a true solution)...remove Adobe Reader and install PDF Xchange Viewer instead. Its free and has browser integration that actually works correctly. Looking over this forum, it seems that Adobe Reader has a number of problems with Windows 7...I would have thought that Adobe would have their act together better. I guess I was wrong.

  • Problems saving PDFs in Safari

This issue just started today but any time I click on a PDF and do a "Save As" out of Safari I am getting the following error message:
The document "document name" could not be exported as "save file name"
Never had any issues w/ this before today and I frequently save PDFs through Safari. Any help is appreciated.
    Jared

I am also no longer able to Save As... a pdf in Safari. On another thread I read that after updating Acrobat Reader, as I, too, did a couple of days ago, a user could not save Safari pdf files. He discovered a new Adobe plugin in the Library/Internet Plugins folder (not user library) called AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin. Moving this to my Disabled Plug-Ins folder or trashing this allows one to Save As... pdf files from Safari. I have no idea what this plugin does, so I'm not sure this is an appropriate fix. I probably can't do something in Acrobat Reader now.

  • Having problems saving PDF version properties in PDF files

We have to set the Acobat version to Adobe Acrobat 5.0 (PDF 1.4) in our PDF files.
The PDF Version properties change even after they are set using any of the following 3 methods:
    1.      Document > Reduce File Size and then  Save As
(In my past experience  - if you only “save” the file, it doesn’t save some of the settings)
    2.      Also set them using -  Advanced   > PDF Optimizer and then  Save As.
    3.      These properties were originally set in the Adobe PDF Settings in the Word file before the PDF was created:
    Compatibility : Adobe Acrobat 5.0 (PDF 1.4)
When I close the file and re-open, the version is not what I set – it doesn’t save.
Is there something that has to be set in Adobe to save the PDF Version property??
I'm using Adobe Acrobat Pro v9.
    Thanks -- Karen

If you use Save or Save as (except the new AAx move of Reduce File Size and PDF Optimize to the save as menu) you will get a current version based on your Acrobat. To get a prior version you have to either create it with compatibility set in the print driver or PDF Maker or you have to used Reduce File Size or PDF Optimize to get a prior version. Maybe that is why they moved those two items to the save as menu so folks would realize that option.
If you save the file (other than with one of the 2 options mentioned) the version will revert to your current version. It sounds like you may be doing that in some way and losing the type. You can check by opening the PDF in a text editor (like WORD) and looking at the first characters of the file -- should read PDF 1.4. If it does, then you were successful. Of course, do not save the file from the text editor.
Since you are using AA9, DO NOT use Save As. Use either the Reduce File Size under the Document menu or the PDF Optimize under the Advanced>Print Production menu as I recall. Then close Acrobat, but do not save again. If you do, you will be right back to an AA9 document.

To save as a PDF, you do that from Print
To save as Wrod format, you export

  • Problem with saving PDF in Preview

When I open PDF file in Preview in OS 10.5. (make changes) and save it as PDF again, this pdf file does not display corectly on PC. Fonts are missing. When I save in Acrobat, everything is correct. I looked on the information about saved pdf, and Prewiev inserts some fonts to PDF. Acrobat reader on PC tells me, that some fonts can be removed and pdf may be not dispayed correctly. This problem is only in Leopard, because in Tiger was everything fine. Does anybody know any solution? Thank you.

I see this same behavior, and it is a serious pain for us LaTeX writers.
I have found a rather annoying work-around: if you manually close the file before re-opening it (Cmd-W), it will honor this "Start on the last viewed page" option and behave like it used to.
Of course, then it starts off at the start zoom level... but, at least, with a large project, you're not having to opt-cmd-g ("go to page") and remember page numbers.

  • Intermittent problem saving a pdf form

I have created a 17 page PDF form in LiveCycle Es with many dynamic features, such as adding or subtracting more lines to a table.  The whole document is about 700KB ( 800 after being partially filled in) in size.  I put fillable password protection on it and ran it thru Adobe Extension, checking Basic Fill-in and Final.
Most users are happy with it except two people are having problems saving it to their computer.  Both downloaded it from Firefox to their computers, then opened it and began typing.  Sometimes they are able to save their work and other times not.  One was able to do a Save As and rename it, but that didn't even work for the other.  One was getting an error message saying to the effect that the volume for the file was externally altered and cannot be saved.
They are both using Reader 8 or 9 and one has Vista while the other has XP.  I have downloaded the form at work and at home and cannot duplicate their problem so I suspect the problem is at their end.
Any ideas of what could be causing this?

I think have a similar question as you answered here.  But I want to just make sure I am understanding your response.
I have created a PDF form in LiveCycle and saved it as an Adobe Static PDF form.  When I supply this form to my users.  The only way they can fill it out and save it is they must have Adode ACROBAT.   The free Adobe Reader will not allow a user to fill out the form and then save it electronically.    They can only fill out the form in Reader and then print it out. Is this correct?
So any one I want to fill out the form and save it electronically will need to have Adobe Acrobat and at least the Standard addition...which costs money.

  • Problem in saving pdf with added pages

    Hi to all,
I'm new in this forum and I have a problem.
My scenario is: I have a dyanmic pdf of 2 pages. I inserted a button on the pdf which duplicates the second page (using the addInstance method in javascript in "click" event) and all works fine: I can add as many pages as I want. The problem is when I save that pdf: the saved pdf does not conserve the pages I added. How can I save the complete pdf? I have to set a certain property of the pdf? Or the problem is in a property of the subform?
    Thanks for your help,
    Enrico

I noted that I have a data connetion on my interactive form and it does n ot work. But if I remove any data connection, it works fine!!! Why this? I need that data connectio. Suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Enrico

Could you please share the screenshot of the exact error message that appears.
Are the PDF forms saved on your computer's local drive?
    Hope to hear from you.
