Problem: Screen Shuts Off For No Reason

I have the new iPhone 3G.
My screen shuts off (the screen turns black, but the phone is still on...like if you shut the monitor off on a desktop PC while the tower is still on) randomly which requires me to do a hard reset (holding the sleep button at the top of the phone and the home button at the same time until the Apple logo appears).
This happens without warning when I do the following:
1. During a call, when I need to use the keypad, put a call on hold, activate speakerphone, etc. the screen will stay black and will not turn on when I touch it. This means I can't even end a call unless the caller hangs up. It is clear that the phone is still on (I can hear the caller at the other end), but I cannot use the screen at all. The screen comes back on when I put the phone back up to my ear, but then when I pull it away to touch the screen it goes black again.
2. After I complete a call, the screen will shut off before I can press the "end call" button. Even after the call is terminated from the other end, I cannot make the screen come back on.
3. After the screen automatically goes to sleep (goes black), I cannot make it come back on.
In all 3 of these instances, I use a hard reset to make the screen come back on. In the first instance that I listed, I have to do a hard reset during the call in order to disconnect the call and get the screen to come back on.
These problems do not happen during/after every single call. For example, sometimes it will be after one call, other times it will be after five calls. It happens without warning and without reason. It is very inconvenient because I am resetting my phone several times a day. When I call customer service lines (for any company), I can't use the keypad to do things such as "Press 1 for English" without doing a hard reset in the middle of the call and calling back several times until it works.
I would really appreciate it if you could offer some advice on how to fix this problem.
Thank you.

I had the same problem, and a very helpful person in another thread suggested I try removing the phone from the case, as it's probably blocking the little sensor next to the earpiece. When it's close to your head, the display shuts off (because, naturally, you're not using the screen). When you take it away, the screen should pop up. If that sensor is blocked, the thing thinks it's still next to your head.
I'm going to experiment without the case for a few days. if it's fixed, great. If it's not, I'm taking the stupid thing back to the Apple Store. We'll see.
Course, if you don't have a case... I'd say either attempt to erase and restore it from within iTunes or get on the horn with Apple support.

I had trouble upgrading my iPad2 toiOS 5.1.I have had it for about 1 year.  I had never upgraded it.  I tried a few times but I kept getting a message that I would loose everything on my iPad if I did.  I bit the bullet andfigured that I would restore it from the back up on my laptop.  Some of the backup files were corrupted.  I was unable to retore my exchange email or my notes from the noted app.
Today, my iPad shut off for no reason and I couldn't get it to turn on again, even though the battery was 70% charged.  I had to press the on button and home button to get it to come back on.

I'm not sure what problem you are experiancing but it would be well worth contacting apple.
If you have had it for less than one year it should be covered under warrenty

We were on our computer and it just shut off for no reason. any suggestions?

You haven't provided any valuable data, it could have been a power problem where the computer is plugged in. Personally I use a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) when I plug in my computer for just that reason.
BTW when posting please complete your profile so we know what kind of iMac you have and the version of OS X. Also what were you doing when the computer shut down.

If the reset does no work
    Try:
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
    Maybe the replacement is defective.

  • Iphone shutting off for no reason.

Over the past few weeks, my Iphone has been shutting down, or turning off, for no reason.  I have tried to reset the device using the Apple method where the home and sleep/wake buttons are pressed and held together, still will not turn back on.  Last time this happened it took about four hours before the phone would turn back on.  Why is this happening and what can I do to fix this problem?

Basics from the manual are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new.

  • FW 31.0.017 problem - Screen shut-off

I have a very irritating problem after the up-grade to 31.0.017.
Closing the slide of my N95 causes a momentary 45 degree scew of the display and then the screen shuts off completely. The phone is still on and recieves calls etc. but the display remains off. Opening the slide (in either dirrection) switches the screen back on again after a short delay.
I have tried numerous resets (hard and soft) and reinsalations (NSU) but no joy!
The old question arises - is there a way to reinstal 30.0.015?
My advice right now is don't update yet if you have an old N95 RM-159 (0534841)!
Anyone experienced the same - any solutions???

Out of curiousity... is the phone being de-branded? De-branding the phone might caused the bugs since HW not supported by FW...

  • Macbook shutting off for no reason

So a few months ago, when I put my macbook to sleep, I would have problems with what I believe to be the harddrive spinning. I would put my computer to sleep and a sometimes a second and sometimes an hour later the hard drive would start spinning and wouldnt stop until I shut it off. Now, rather than putting my computer to sleep I always turn it off. Recently, one of 3 things has started to happen when i turn my computer back on.
    1. It runs perfectly
    2. It shuts off after about a minute, then once I turn it on again shuts off more and more frequently until it refuses to turn on. At this point, I have to leave the computer shut off for 5-10 minutes before turning it on, and at this point, it usually runs fine.
    3. It runs perfectly until I open a second program, or a program that takes up a lot of memory. This will continue to happen until again, I leave my computer shut off for 30 minutes or so, then turn it on again.
I have been told that it may be a problem with the battery, but I don't understand how as I always keep it fully or almost fully charged, and also, when this problem happens it is typically plugged in. (The problem continues if I unplug it also) Also, once my macbook stops shutting off, and I turn it back on, I can unplug it for quite a while and the battery seems to work perfectly.
I also have a problem with a crack on the right side of the mousepad, right along the edge of my macbook, but I don't think thins could lead to any of these problems, as I have read about so many people with the same problem.
If anyone has any suggestions or has heard about anything like this happening, i would really like to hear about it, thanks.

    1) Reset the System Management Controller. To do this, shut down the Mac, unplug the AC adaptor, remove the battery and then hold the power button down for 7 seconds. Then reconnect everything.
    2) Next, reset your NVRAM by holding controloption+pr when you turn the mac on. Continue holding those keys until the computer reboots a second time.
    3) If that does not solve the problem, insert the first of the two DVDs that came with your MacBook and reboot the machine while holding the D key. This brings up the Apple Hardware Test. Run the extended test and see if it finds anything. Do this with nothing but the AC adaptor connected to the computer.
    4) The cracking case is a recognized defect in the MacBook. If you call Apple or take your computer to your local Apple store, they'll replace it free of charge.

  • Macbook Pro Shutting off for no reason

I purchased my MacBook Pro in June 2010 and have never had any problems with it.  The back left foot by the charger fell off a while ago but it didn't seem to be an issue. Tonight my computer has shut off unexpectedly twice when it was plugged in.  The screen goes black, the charger light goes black, and when I try to press the side to see the illuminated battery light it doesn't light up even though I know it has charge.  I press the power button and it won't work for a few minutes. When it starts working and does restart the clock says its the year 2000.  It only turns off like this when I lean the computer on its left side.  Can someone please help me??!

Okay any idea how much this will cost to fix?
If it's just the MagSafe board, I'd guess somewhere under $200; if it requires replacing the entire logic board, somewhere around $1000 and probably not worth it, depending on which MBP you have.

  • Why does my G5 shut off for no reason?

My powerPC G5 with OS X 5.8 has been shutting down very abruptly and for no apparent reason.  I'll be working and 'poof' - off. It restarts fine with no mention of what just happened. It's done this occasioanally, but twice today.
I'm wondering what the first course of action is. I'm thinking running some sort of drive check/repair, but am not sure how.
I do have it plugged into a ups back up. One thing I've noticed is that when it does shut off there seems to be clicks or other sounds from other electronic devices around. It's slight and quick so I'm never quite sure what just happened. I don't know if the action my PowerPC G5 is taking is causing other electronic responces or if it is a power surge that is causing everything to respond and in the instance of my PowerPC G5 it just shuts off. Immediately and with no drawn out shut off.
I've not lost any data, but it is annoying and worrying.

One reason might be it is overheating.  I run the free version of iStat menus which lets me monitor hard drive temperatures (all I can do on my G4 - newer computers let you montor CPU).
What exact model G5 is this?  I think laptops may be particularly prone to overheating, especially if you put them on a oft surface and inhibit air flow.
Have you checked the crash logs to see if they say anything?

  • Shutting off for no reason

My MBP (February 2009) shut off unexpectedly this morning.  It was plugged in, getting LIGHT use, when I closed the screen put in bag, got home. When I pulled it out (about 20 minutes later) and opened the screen it was dead. Had to restart it.
Temperature wasn't real hot so don't know what's going on.
It did this yesterday after burning in iDVD.
I'm gonna call Apple support but wanted to throw it up here first.
    Thanks for any input.

Even though the battery meter, indicator, may read the battery has a charge or is fully charged that does not mean the battery is any good. More then likely you need a new battery.

  • It's shutting off for no reason, wont burn dvd 1260ux

I have a hp pavilion dv7-1260us and it came with vista but stupid me put on windows 7 which so far was a good thing, I did have a little problem of having to put all the drivers back and that was crappy because I had to put in 32 bit and 64 bit and now my dvd burner won't burn anything, i have the covert dvd x program and i've even tried just burning from the desktop and it gets to the end and says something is wrong or that I need the firmware updated but when I try to run the device manager it says everything is fine, but nothing is fine because it doesn't want to burn and it was fine two weeks ago and then bam out of nowhere it just stops. I tried reinstalling all the drivers, but I can't find the firmware for the dvd burner and now it's just shutting off. I was running World of Warcraft and I thought at first it was hot because the fan came and then it just shut off, and it was long time it was on. But then it died just after an hour of playing. I don't know much about computers so i'm freaking out. I got this computer used but it was still new in the box, the guy was trustworthy, but I"m so dissapointed in this, its' supposed to be a good computer and now it sucks. Help please please....I'm sorry if this the wrong place to post this, I don't know what to do.

I need anykind of help, could it be my computer just sucks, or could it be that the firmware does need to be reinstalled  but how come I can't find anything for my blue ray dvd player burner, and why would the computer just shut of playing a game, that makes no sense.
