Problem sharing file with windows 7

I am tring to set up pc with the new macbook air.
I can read/write files in Windows 7 from my macbook air. However, the reverse is giving me a headache.....(seriously)
In my macbook air, Preference->Network->Advance->Wins , I set the workgroup as WORKGROUP ( my windows 7 workgroup name)
Under the Wins servers, i've added ip address of my pc. (Tried both ways)
Also I check two boxes(AFP, SMB) in file sharing.
set my username to give full permission and none for "Everyone".
Now here is the problem. In my windows 7 pc, under the network, I can see my macbook appear. When I click, it is giving me a login pop-up. There, I've entered the login name of my macbook air, and password, but it kept giving me an error message that it is not the correct one.
I have no idea why this happening. The most bazzarre thing is that it sometimes is connected with the same setting. Can anyone please help me?
This is driving me for 3 days night and day.....
Any comment/advise will be appreciated.
thanks

Here's what I just did and my Windows 7 PC sees all the folders under my Mac user name.
I didn't touch anything in Network. It was already setup in the WINS tab for WORKGROUP.
I opened Sharing from System Preferences. Selected File Sharing and after a few seconds, shared folders (user name Public) and users showed up. Windows Sharing is ON. I clicked on Options, checked 'Shared Folders and Files using SMB (Windows)' and checked my user name under Account. It prompted me for my user password. If you look under 'Windows Sharing: On', you'll see this "Windows users can access shared folders on this computer, and administrators all volumes, at \\192.168.1.xx." <--- internal IP address of your Mac.
Then, I went over to my Windows 7 PC and mapped a drive to my MacBook Pro's internal IP address. I was prompted for my userID and password which I filled in with my Mac logged in userID/password. All the folders under my Mac user account appeared and I am able to open them. This may be all you need to do. Map the Mac internal IP to a drive letter in Windows 7.

Hi franki, I'm glad those web sites were useful.
Unfortunately I can't advise about your remaining problem because I don't have a suitable Windows computer to try things out on. Maybe somebody else here can.
I'd suggest you give a few more details about exactly how far you get and at which point things get stuck.
Also, if nobody on this board can help then you could try another one. There are several boards here related to networking, of which the Tiger Forums Getting Online & Networking one seems to be the most lively.

  • Sharing files with windows and OS X.

Alright, I have been helping my school setup about 20 new lenovo PC's and 2 iMacs. It is a newspaper class, but this isn't a small little newspaper. I am trying to figure out a way to setup a way for students to write their article and give me the word document files and pictures along with it. What would be the easiest way to do this? setup the Mac as a server? if so how do i configure the windows side to see the server? is there a cool app that will do this for me? i need help!
another thing i am doing is setting up a wordpress site so students can log on and post their articles online and it to be printed. i am very excited as the graphic designer to get this all working smoothly. so any bit of information helps
the PC's have XP and the school blocks most ports (network wise) except for port 80 but they have a ton of filters. and the iMacs are the newest, running leopard of course.
    Thanks in advance!

The only problem is that I tried to do that but when you log into the PC's you have limited access, theres no way i can have admin privileges. is there some way i can get a folder showing up on all those computers? maybe make an smb sharing service on the mac and setting up a shortcut on the windows boxes to the iMacs address?

  • Sharing files with Windows XP - fed up!

I have a wireless network with an iMac G5, a MacMini, both running Leopard 10.5.2, and a PC running Windows XP.
After resolving various problems I had each machine capable of seeing files and folders on each other - Great!
For an unassociated reason, I simply restarted my Airport base station without changing any settings. Since then, the PC cannot see the macs and the macs cannot see the PC, although each Mac can see the other. The PC connects correctly to the network and thus to the internet.
I have waited days for each machine to find the other on the network but to no avail.
Is there any way that I can kick the system back to life??

  • Shared Files with Windows

I enjoy my MAC as does my wife, but she still has her Windows PC. Occasionally I will be in a file and she will go into it and not get a message that it is already open - the same happens to me when she is in a file that I then open. This happens in Excel, which I run on my Mac (Office 2004 for MAC) and she runs in Windows (Office 2003 Pro). It also happens when I run QuickBooks within Parallels. In both cases, the data files reside on my MAC, which she accesses. (I just had a thought - she shares under my ID, so perhaps I need to setup a new user on my MAC so it knows that someone else is using the file?)
We obviously are on the same network and share a printer and internet access. Is this something I am doing wrong or need to check/select to get the computers to recognize when one user is already in a file that another user opens?

The only thing you're "doing wrong" is expecting a permissive libertarian operating system to enforce Windoze-like fascist/paranoid restrictions on what you can do with your files ...on your computer.
Unix doesn't throw a hissy-fit if several clients try to read the same file at the same time. In most cases that's A GOOD THING. Typically, files are viewed much more frequently than they're edited; so, enforcing one-at-a-time access is more an annoyance than a "feature." This is especially true in Real™ multi-tasking/multi-user systems -- where dozens of clients may be logged on to the same computer. Remember, unix started out in the multi-user arena -- and has been playing that game, very successfully, for the past 35 years.
Unix also doesn't assume that all carbon-units are idiots. If several clients wish to edit the same file simultaneously, unix is cool with that -- and even provides each edit session with a scratch-copy to work on. The original file remains unchanged unless/until the operator explicitly instructs unix to "save" the file by overwriting the original. When there's a possibility of multi-user conflicts, unix leaves the policy-making decisions to the warm-blooded system components. The usual/accepted practice for avoiding collisions is to edit a copy of the original -- safely tucked-away in your private home directory.
BTW, unix has the ability to enforce exclusive access, but in traditional unix programming style, most interactive applications take pains to avoid unnecessary interference with the operator.

  • IMac G5 sharing files with windows computer

    Hi,
I have an iMac g5 which is wireless, I want to be able to access my other windows based computers to share files.
I have a Netgear wireless router and my iMac g5 is connected to the network (i.e. the internet works). From a windows computer I can access my iMac g5 through using "run" and typing in my ip and username, for my imac g5.
Apple help tells me that if I open a finder window and click on the network tab my workgroup will be there and all my computers will be there and i can connect to them. However the network appears but none of my computers do?
p.s. I have windows file sharing and apple talk activated.
    How can i fix this?

  • Sharing files with windows

    hi everyone,
    I hope you can help:
I am running a mac mini  (op sys 10.6.8).
I have a wireless network in the house through AE.
As of this weekend, I now also have a sony vaio laptop (treason I know but bought for my wife).
I have managed to connect the sony to the network, and can access internet.  I have also managed to get it to print to the printer connected to my macmini.
But I am unable to get the sony access to my files on my mac mini, although it does see the mac mini. When I click macmini on the sony, the only file appearing is a dropfile, but no access to that is permitted.
On one occasion on the mac, through finder/go/connect to server/browse/connect as, I saw the sony but then it disappeared.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you

Firsst, on the Mini, do you have File Sharing enabled
(System Preferences->Sharing)?  Also, do you have
the permissions set on folders that you want to share?
As far as seeing the Windows machine on the Mini, someone
else wil have to help there.

  • Problem opening files with Mac OS Mavericks and Elements

I have recently installed Mac OS 10.9.x Mavericks.  Since this I have had problems opening files in Elements 11.  I upgraded to Elements 12, blindly hoping the problem would fix itself, however it hasn't.   When I try to open a file the Finder window pops up then disappears immediately.  Occasionally it will stay open until I scroll down but then closes.   I keep the files on an external drive but the drive is working with all other applications, so I don't think it is that.  If anyone has had a similar problem and has any ideas I would be grateful as the program is unusable for now.  Thanks very much in anticipation

Hi Sjmitc, I followed Barbara's instructions about only about 24 hours ago and since then my files have been opening perfectly.  I tried it again before replying to you and they are still opening fine.
I did have to go through my files a couple of times to find all the Elements preferences, but the solution is working fine so far.  I will let you know if I have any further problems.  It is maddening when it happens, so I hope you can fix yours.

Henwen, Is this solution still working for you? I tried this same solution on mine a few days ago and had no luck. However, it actually let me open files this afternoon then when I went back in later today, it was doing the disappearing act again.

If you mean just moving files between a Mac and a PC with XP on it, get a USB flash drive, format it FAT32 (they usually come that way) and copy the files to that drive.

  • Having problem opening files with gradients in CS2

When I try to open an illustrator 9 file from CS2, I get "An unknown error has occurred." message. I believe this may be a CS2 problem because when I checked further, I discovered that only AI 9 files where the gradient feature was used were affected. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Lion server file sharing issue with windows API read/write ini file (GetPrivateProfileString)

    Hello,
I try to config lion server as file server for a windows application we use at work. All other computers are windows 7 or XP, lion server is the only mac. I choose lion server because it's size, quality and personal love of apple products.
10.7.2 lion server's samba file sharing works almost perfectly with all my windows machines, I can copy, delete, modify any text files or office files without any issue, but the most important windows application for my business doesn't work with samba file sharing. After some digging, I found it is because windows program can't read or write INI file stored on lion share. Windows API GetPrivateProfileString always returns empty if the INI file is store on lion share.
You can download a small application for read/write windows INI file from codeproject.com to test this problem:
    http://www.codeproject.com/KB/files/ini.aspx
I can open/edit the in file using any text editor without any problem. The only problem is with those windows APIs. ACL is turned on for my lion share and assigned "delete" rights to samba users.
I install samba3 on the same server; it works perfectly with windows API. My windows program also works. Looks like there is something wrong with lion server's sambax.
I'd prefer to use built-in samba even I have samba3 working. Built-in samba is very immature right now, but considered how young it is, I will give apple some time to make it mature.
Does anyone have same issue or knows how to fix it?
    Thanks,
    Michael.

All the memory is fine. The server rarely if ever goes down when there are only around 10-12 users connected. When there are 20+ users connected and working heavily it goes down often. When I say working heavily, I mean they are transferring huge files to the SAN (100GB+), sometimes 5 at a time per user, and there are a bunch of others who are reading large video files at a minimum of 220MB/sec from the SAN.
Though this worked on Snow Leopard without any issues, Lion just doesn't seem to be able to handle it. The odd thing is, on Snow Leopard there was only a single 1GB ethernet connection to a NAS system, whereas with Lion we have a much more powerful machine with a 6-port 10GB ethernet card and a 4 lane 8GB fiber card to a true SAN. You would think that the newer scenario with Lion would handle far more users with ease.
So far, very disappointing with regards to Lion's file serving performance.

  • New to Mac - File sharing issue with windows PC?

    Good day
I have a win7 pc with all my movies storred on.  I shared the folder on the network, and can access the folder from my windows pc and my MacMini.
The problem is that my MacMini does not pic up all the files/folders on the shared folder.  I would guess it only picks up about 80% of the files/folders.  When I connect to the shared folder from the windows 7 pc it picks up everything.
    More info:
    Win7 Home (all updates done)
3tb drive (not sure what you call it, but it was formated with NTFS guid table)
Full read Write share enabled to everyone
    MacMini Latest hardware and OSX.
Shared folder shows in shared part of finder.
Already did a restart of both PC and Mac
Already did a clean-up on mac.
The mac connects via wi-fi and win pc via ethernet
Please help me on what more I can try

I've seen this a long time ago, seems SMB on the Mac was limited to the number of listings, if you Share an inner folder, does OSX show more files in that folder?
No idea if this works in 10.8, but will mention it...
    SMBUp
Did you lose your shared folders with the update of Mac OS X from Snow Leopard to Lion? You can’t see your shared folders from your DVR or Medicaneter boxes hooked up to your TV? The internet tells you to install gigabytes of developer tools and use tons of command-line instructions to regain the ability to see your mac from your other devices in the house after moving to Lion? We might be able to help.
