Problem solving expertise appreciated. What does a MacPro do in its initial booting phase?

My MacPro 3.1 (2008) with 20 Gb Ram does no longer want to boot. I checked the harddrive (startup disc), it is OK (my MacBook) boots from it. I checked the ram, it appears to be OK. When I push the power button the fan begins to work, red lights appear shortly on the RAM circuit boards and they go out again but then nothing happens. Monitor does not wake up, there is no start up chime, machine appear unresposive to any keyboard commands.
Anyone can tell what may be wrong, what the cause is why the MacPro does no longer want to boot and what could possibly be done about it?
So some Problem solving expertise and advice is higlhly appreciated. I really like to know what exactly does a MacPro do in its initial booting phase? Information that could bring life b to my well respected grand-old lady.

Conventional wisdom is that you get nowhere until you get the chime.
For that reason, the approved method is to remove everything that could possible be dragging down power and test the absolute minimum configuration, hoping to get the chime. Once it chimes, you slowly build it back up. adding one part at a time until you find something faulty or it "comes clean".
Disconnect AC power and remove:
graphics card
All other PCIe cards
All Hard drives
All Optical drives
All RAM -- then check for the power light blinking
next step is to restore one pair of DIMMs and try for the chime.
Then more DIMMs
Then graphics card, etc.

In what regard are you referring to? Are you experiencing this every time you are trying to convert your pdf? Have you tried other pdf's?
A few other questions:
What is the file size? (there is a 100 MB limit)
What is the original doc type of the pdf?
What are you converting it to? excel? word?

I updated software and restarted my mac, It didn't move from the grey screen so I powered off and on while pressing Shift + Cmd +V. It now will not not move from 'launch_msg(): Socket is not connected'. What does this mean?

As you see first is executed select from TABLE_2 (Node: <<66800638>>, Close Row Count = 1) and this is correct number of close row count
next we have

and after this we have

And this is incorrect number of CloseRowCount (should be aprox. 60k)
Finally result is wrong because we have no records (inner join by BI Server doesn't work :( )

I'm wrestling with getting all of this to work myself.
Can you see the job in XGrid Admin? It sounds as if the job is failing, but I can't be sure. Clicking on the job in XGrid Admin should give you a "play by play" and tell you where it is failing.
My experience has shown me that permissions is the root cause of alot of issues, and I cannot find any clear reference on what permissions the "Podcasts" folder needs to make all of this work.
Following the documentation, the "pcastxgrid" user doesn't actually get assigned any permissions via the file system or Group membership, so I'm not sure how all of this needs to be set.

Looks like some LabVIEW beginner was just playing with various array operations. Doesn't seem to do anything useful.
The upper loop Creates a 2D array where each row depends on the input array. The first element is the number of valid elements following on the same row. then length is calculated from the difference of elements N+1 and N. The rest of the row is an increasing ramp with increment 1, starting with the number from the (input array +1).
This is repeated for each element in the input array except for the last.
The second loop reads the first element to get the lenght back and then gets the following valid elements. When you press stop, it processes the next row until you run out of rows.

[SOLVED] 2010.05 images do not ´see´ my CDROM after initial boot.

I was pleased to see the new release images of 2010.05 appearing. I thought i´d try a fresh install, but on my 800mhz machine, the installer could not see the IDE CDROM on the second part of the booting process. I get the Arch menu and then when the installer looks for the CDROM to install Arch, it waits for 30 seconds and then can´t find it. Obviously the CD is readable because it booted initially. I´m guessing that whichever modules are loaded for this bit of the install, it hasn´t loaded the one I need. I can confirm that the latest cut of Debian Squeeze does not have this problem.
Can anyone help?

There are a few IDE controllers that are not supported properly yet by the new Linux libata subsystem. In old images, we offered an option to use the old "ide" subsystem instead of libata, support for that has been removed.
However, I doubt that you have one of the very few controllers that still don't work with libata. There is no way to tell unless you provide more details about your hardware - specifically, the mainboard chipset and/or ide controller.
A stupid, yet possible workaround: Write the image to USB too. Boot from the CD and have the USB inserted at the same time. It will start booting from the CD, but mount the file system from the USB afterwards and keep running from there.

we are using CR out of Visual Studio 2005 and 2008 for a PDF export.
We are able to start a report process and can see on the load of the process that the report seems to be generated, but we didn't received a report PDF file.
We add the following Registry key (depending on CR version) to get log files:
For 10.5: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Business Objects\Report Application SErver\Server\
For 10.2: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Crystal Decisions\Report Application SErver\Server\
and got the following error message:

Maybe do you have any suggestions what the problem could be? What does it mean with "Low system ressources"? There should be enough memory, hard disc size and cpu power on the machine.

I think we want to back up a bit here. I am not sure what "Low System Resources" means or what it's about. So, let's try the following:
1) Are you able to export to any other format?
2) Are you able to print to printer?
3) Try a new simple app and add a viewer to the form. See if export from the viewer export button works.
4) In the above new app, export to CR report format from the export button on the viewer toolbar.
5) If you are able to get an exported rpt file, it will have saved data with it. Run that report in your original app (comment out any db logon code). Can you export a saved data report?
6) Make sure you have read / write permissions on the win\temp directory
7) What database are you connecting to and what is the database connection method (OLE DB, ODBC, etc.)

Imac G4 freezing, but with weird fix. What does it mean?

My 5 year old IMAC (10.3.9) has been freezing more and more over the past few months. I use it almost exclusively for the internet. It varies, but the freeze happens after anywhere from 20 to 50 min. of internet use.
After trying to fix the problem by getting rid of some old files, etc. (to no result), I finally found that unplugging and plugging back in my keyboard to the base fixes the problem every time. What does this indicate? A faulty connection, or some arcane disease i've picked up somehow? Has anyone heard of a similar problem?
I guess the obvious solution would be to pick up a new keyboard and see if that is the problem, but thought i'd post here in case it was a common problem with a different solution. TIA.

First try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.
If that doesn't do it, try the following;
The original Apple Pro mouse cable frays in the chord just as it exits the mouse, over time, and shorts out causing symtoms similar to yours. You can't see the fray by looking at it thru the exterior covering. This can happen to third party mice over time too.
Mine did it. I plugged it into a different port, so the chord exited the mouse in a different direction, and had very few freezes after that. Once I got over my frugalness (cheapness!) I bought a new one. Eventually it got to where I couldn't even work for more then a few minutes without a freeze.
So, try a known good mouse to see if that's the problem.
Don Archibald, a Level 5 here, said the USB ports on the keyboard (for you desktop users) are underpowered and can cause this problem also if the mouse is plugged in there. This can even fry the keyboard sometimes (happened to him). Try plugging your mouse into a port on your monitor or tower.

[Application Builder] What does "disconnect type definitions" accomplish?

Inside the Build Specification properties, there's an option "Additional Exclusions" -> "Disconnect type definitions".
The only piece of documentation I've found is at http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/371361H-01/lvdialog/additional_exclusions_sd/ but it's not very descriptive. It suggests that disconnecting might cause front panel objects to be displayed incorrectly. Is this the case?
What does this option do? Its existence suggests to me that type definition info persists inside a compiled LabVIEW application, unless we choose to disconnect them.
When should I disconnect, and when should I leave type definitions alone?

I only know one use case for this option: when application builder throws errors during builds or exe itself doesnt work.
One reason to use it is when you use Network Shared Variables with typedefs - I recall problems with shared variables not founding theirs typedefs after build. This option also happens to fix more exotic problems - see LV2014 bug fixes:

So, other than to workaround app builder problems - I don't know any other reason to mark Disconnect Type Definitions.

Well when you see the Flashing Question Mark it's the firmware telling you it can't find the bootable OS it's supposed to boot from.
It might have forgotten it or it might be trying to boot the wrong one, or one that doesn't exist anymore.
Hold the option key down while booting up, you'll get a selection, pick the boot drive and once in, set Startup Disk in System Preferences.
You might be having other hardware issues.

Apple has no physical stores of their own in Dubai, so unless you mean that you purchased from the online Apple Store for the UAE, you purchased from a dealer, who may or may not have been authorized. You can check the expiration date of the warranty on your iPad yourself by entering in the serial number here:

If it does indeed show the warranty has expired, then what you need to do from here will depend on who you purchased the iPad from and when you really did purchase it. Perhaps you actually purchased it in August and are just misremembering? Check your receipt. If you confirm that you did purchase within the last calendar year, tell us exactly where you got it and we can probably offer advice.

I bought my iPad 2 three months ago from apple, and all my updates re from apple through iTunes. Version 4.3.3 is the latest version I updated, have been trying hard to update 4.35 but I get error messages all the time when the update is almost complete. Unless you have a backup from which you can restore, yes you will lose all of your data and settings.
You should be able to sync your content back to the iPad if you have been syncing with iTunes all along. If you don't sync with iTunes, you can download much of your paid content again for free as long as you use the same Apple ID. This explains downloading past purchases.

Unfortunately, at this point, you must restore the device before you can move on. There is nothing you can do to avoid it now.
