Problem synchronizing with iPod

A user is have quite a few problems synchronizing with his iPod.
He is only able to sync if he logs in as an administrator (he has two accounts on the machine), runs iTunes, cancels the sync (the administrator account doesn't have the music files), closes iTunes, logs on again with his regular account, and opens iTunes again.
It seems to be a permissions issue, but he does have administrator permissions on the folder when using his regular account.
How should iTunes be set up so that administrator permissions aren't needed to sync with an iPod?
In addition, is there a way to update iTunes software via the updater without administrator permissions?

Is Fast user switching enabled on the PC?
Checking on this because iTunes doesn't like Fast User Switching on XP or Vista. See:

  • Solution to problems synchronizing with Mercedes C...

    Warning: this is long but worths reading if you have trouble synchronizing your Nokia's phone book/addressbook with COMAND APS.
    I have spent hours looking on Mercedes and Nokia forums for my problem and did not find a posted solution. I have now found a solution myself so I decided to post here hoping it will help other people.
    First my issue: I have an E-Class W211 (Apr 2005, UK) with phone pre-wiring, the Mercedes SAP v2 cradle and a Nokia E61i (S60 3rd edition). Till about a week ago the whole was working perfectly: was able to make/receive calls, read/send SMS, synchronize the phone's and SIM contacts to the COMAND, etc.
    About a week ago I upgraded the firmware on my phone to overcome some other (irrelevant to this) issues I had. When I got into my car after the phone's firmware upgrade I naturally needed to pair the phone with the COMAND/SAP Cradle. I did everything according to the manual that came with the SAP v2 Cradle and thought all would be good again. Then, I try to re-sync the COMAND's address book with that of my phone's by following the manual's procedure (dial 0000).
    The synchronization started ok: phone exited Remote SIM mode, got indication "Please Wait" on Comand and phone went into Sync mode. Almost immediately though I get on the phone "System Error" and just the option to press ok. I pressed ok and few seconds later the synchronization process ended, Remote SIM was activated again but phonebook was not loaded to COMAND. I repeated the same process over and over again, removed pairing and went over the whole pairing process from the beginning but still no luck. Unfortunately neither the phone or the COMAND would give any information on what the problem was.
    I checked for many hours on Nokia and Mercedes forums, on Google, etc. but still no luck. I found quite a few people facing the same problem mainly with N95 and E-series phones but no solution. Strange thing was that all were facing the problem from the very first time they tried to transfer their phone's contacts to COMAND while in my case in the past it was working and stopped working after upgrading my phones firmware.
    After hours of trial and error (removed recently installed phone applications, restored old phone backups, etc.) without luck I thought the problem would be the new firmware on my phone. But... I had no way to go back to the old firmware but even if I had I would cause the same issues that the new firmware solved again (so "rolling back" the firmware was not a real option). So I started going through every possible "core" phone setting that could have changed with the firmware upgrade to see what could be wrong and voila: if you go to the Connect->Sync menu on your phone you will see there a sync profile called PC Suite. Select it, click Options, Edit Profile and then, Connection. You will see that one option is Server Version. If selected Server Version is 1.2 underneath there is another option called Server ID. These two (Server Version and Server ID) are what cause the problem. You have the option to edit the PC Suite profile and set Server Version to 1.1 (then Server ID option disappears) and synchronization with COMAND will work. But as you might have side effects with PC Suite in this way, the ideal thing to do is to create a new sync profile, copy the settings from the PC Suite profile (you are prompted for this) and then, go and change this new profile so that Server version is 1.1. That was it (at least in my case) and I hope this will be helpful for others too. I also had Mail For Exchange installed on my mobile and removed it but I don't think this was the issue (will actually re-install MfE on my mobile now).
    Obviously, this Server Version 1.2 option did not exist on the old firmware of my phone so there was nothing to configure and all was working ok seamlessly but when it came out and set as the default by Nokia caused the incompatibility with Mercedes COMAND.
    Good Luck!

    Thanks for a thorough description of your problem and devised solution.
    I was getting very happy with your description of facts, for I recognized them all. However, in my case your solution did not work: I did change back to Server Version 1.1 of the synchronization profile and still get the "System Error" message.
    I have no doubts whatsoever that this happened with the 110.07.127 firmware upgrading.
    Do you have any other clue on how to proceed from here?

  • Problem  Synchronizing New Ipod Touch

    Just bought 8GB Ipod Touch, which replaces an 80GB Ipod. When synchronizing the new Ipod Touch, only about one-third of the songs synchronize, and I get an error message saying "Attempting to copy to the disk Ipod Touch failed. An unknown error occurred (-69)". Any help is appreciated.

    Thank for taking the time to reply Katrina,
    The files are in AAC (m4a) format and were moved with Windows Explorer. All files were moved at the same time.
    The OS is Windows XP. I don't think it's a permissions problem as all the files were copied at the same time and were playable before moving. I didn't make it clear on my first post that the greyed out fields are only on the "faulty" tracks, the data is not missing or greyed out on the "good" tracks.
    Folder and directory attributes are identical on the faulty and good tracks, hence my thinking that database indexing is the issue, rather than the music database itself - I may well be wrong - this is where my knowledge runs out, hence the cry for help!
    Any ideas or suggestions you may have would be appreciated.

  • How to find which songs are not synchronized with iPod?

    I have about 5,000 songs in iTunes and the same minus 7 in the iPod.
    How do I find the songs that were not synchronized?
    Thanks,

    Hi, the instruction are difficult to follow, I am not a programmer. Secondly I understand that it finds duplicate songs. My problem that some tongs were not transfered to iPod for some reason. I checked the duplicate songs from the menu and it showed hundreds, because some of them in the Best of or live Albums.
    I think iTunes should have an option finding non synced songs.
    Thank you,

  • 3 problems happening with iPod, is it dying on me?

    I have a 30g 5th Generation iPod. A little while ago, I started noticing these problems occuring:
    1. Occasionally when I turn the iPod on, the songs will not start and the time bar stays at 0:00. I have to reset it by holding menu and the center button and then it will play songs.
    2. When watching a video, the battery lasts 15-20 minutes before saying the battery is dead and needs to be plugged in (was fully charged when started video). Sometimes, if I let the iPod sit for 10 minutes, it will have half a battery when I turn it on again.
    3. Occasionally I'll be listening to a song or watching a video and the iPod will randomly turn off, no battery dying or any other notice. It just turns off and then I have to trun it back on. (I do not have the auto-off setting on)
    I tried a restore but I have noticed all 3 problems again since the restore. Is there anything I can do to save my iPod or is it time to buy a new one?
    Thanks!

  • TS1363 Help with Problem encountered with iPod Touch 5th gen After performing  Sync.

    Hello Friends.
    My name is Joaquin. I was wondering if anyone can help with a problem I have encountered with my iPod Touch 5th generation running under OS 7.0.4.
    After performing a Sync, a lot of the song in my iPod showed a red icon beside the song. It is the same Circle with a square in the center icon that shows the download progress status that you see when updateing APPs, etc.
    The songs play perfectly in my computer library and in an old iPod Classic but not in the iPod Touch. The only difference was that when I connected the iPod I got a message stating something like "Transfer purchases from iPod touch to computer" despite of the fact that I did not make purchases from my IPod.
    I will really appreciate the help. I can´t survive without my music. Thank you in advance.
    Regards,

    Does the iOS device connect to other networks? If yes that tends to indicate a problem with your network. Yes
    Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
    Did the iOS device connect before? no
    Try the following to rule out a software problem:  (Not clear what you did)
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
    Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
    .- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem. Since it connects to other networks that indicates a problem with your network

  • Anyone had this problem? With iPod Classic?

    Don't normally do this, but I'm posting this in two places, iPod Classic and GarageBand because I think both of those audiences might have encountered this.
    1) Let's say I have +Song A+, recorded in GarageBand, with a tenor sax already in iTunes;
    2) I decide to add a flute. Do so in GarageBand;
    3) I keep the title of the song the same: +Song A+;
    4) I go to iTunes and delete +Song A+ (which just has the tenor sax);
    5) Back to GarageBand, and send +Song A+, with flute added, to iTunes;
    6) It's there. Plays +Song A+ with both sax and flute;
    7) Hook up the iPod Classic, it syncs but ...
    8) It plays version one of +Song A+, just the tenor sax, no flute;
    9) Why? This is the way I've always done it, with no problems.
    10) The only way I could get the new version of +Song A+ onto the iPod was to rename it: +Song B+. Then it was there. But that shouldn't have been necessary, at least from my past experience
    Is something not right with my iPod Classic?

    nemateoz wrote:
    Why?
    i'm not sure what criteria iTunes uses to detect changes, but the name would be one, perhaps creation date (and other things?). only "changed" songs are synced (otherwise the entire library would be x-ferred every time you sync)
    10) The only way I could get the new version of +Song A+ onto the iPod was to rename it: +Song B+.
    i would try adding 1 step: delete the song from iTunes, sync, then add the new version to iTunes and sync.

  • Problems with iPod Shuffle: nobody sees it after format

    I have a 2nd generation iPod Shuffle, and it worked alright for a month.
    However, I noticed an empty 0 bytes mp3 file I could not delete with either Windows or iTunes, and decided to format the device. Being foolish enough to do so, I formatted it via Windows to FAT, and then it synchronized with iTunes library OK (I did not reset or restore it with iTunes) But after I copied some music (about 600Mb) there and disconnected it from my PC, it wouldn't work.
    The green light near the on/off button is on, but the light on the other side is not glowing.
    I tried to connect it to my PC again, but neither iTunes (version 7.0.2, however I doubt it matters) nor Windows XP sees it. I downloaded the iPod Reset Utility, but it doesnt see the iPod either.
    I don't know what to do to bring it to life again.

    I have similar problems. I formatted mine under FAT32 with Windows' disk management mmc. Then i restored it with ipod shuffle's restore utility. after that I plugged it back in, itunes recognized a new ipod, prompted me for a new name with an option for "autofill".
    I first unchecked autofill, and tried to manually drag files over to my shuffle, but it fails to complete the sync process. then I tried changing its options under itune's Settings panel for my shuffle, it fails to sync too.
    so then i reformatted it in FAT32, restored it with the utility program. i opened itunes, typed in a new ipod name and CHECKED autofill. this time it completes the autofill on its first recognition phase, i could even listen to the song after i disconnected it from my PC. but when i reconnect it again, itunes can't sync with my ipod just as the previous try.
    I also tried enabling Disc Mode, but unfortunately my itunes is unable to sync with ipod, so the option was never enabled...
    Please Help!

  • Any ideas on problem with ipod and alpine cde-9881 car stereo

    I have an ipod 60gb v 1.2.1 and a new Alpine car stereo with Ipod connecting cable. When connected, the stereo message reads IPod searching. It never assumes control of ipod,or quits searching. I have reset and restored my ipod, had the apple geek at genius bar check it out. My ipod does not play on the alpine ipod ready stereo in my husband's car, nor the stereos in Car Toys. My husband's 30 gb ipod plays on the stereo in his car AND my car. Help! Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem? Alpine is telling me it could be a software problem with my ipod, and to revert to an earlier version of itunes. But my husband's ipod works in my car. So I did a restore using his computer and itunes....no luck. am interested in any ideas on a possible solution!!
    Thanks in advance

    Have you had a chance to look at this troubleshooting page? If not, have a look at the bottom section that covers what to try if the message keeps reappearing: iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode - Use iTunes to restore
    Towards the end it says "If after restoring your iPod, the message described above reappears, the iPod drive letter may need to be reassigned. See the "Change the Drive Letter" section of this document for steps to assign a different drive letter" which contains a link to this article: Windows confuses iPod with network drive and iTunes may exhibit strange behavior in relation to the iPod.

    Problems with ipod connection.
    I have problems to connect my ipod to computer windows 7.
    When I connect I get the following error:

    And it recognizes the ipod when trying to go play music or videos make me the following error:

    I've uninstalled all apple applications and re-installing, as I formatted the ipod and continues to set the same error.
    What else can I do?

  • Problems with Ipod Touch

    Problems with iPod Touch.
    Hi, I bought an ipod touch in Colombia a couple of months ago but lost the invoice, I tried using it but everytime I connect the iPod to the computer, it restarts over and over again, I've tried all the recommendations show in the Apple support site, but no method has proved the question is, I can take this ipod to a Mac store in the U.S. for repair or change.
    I live in Venezuela, there is some Apple store in my country where I can take it.
    Thanks in advance for your quick response

    You should be able to go to the USA for warrantee service. If you purchased at an Apple store you should be able to go to your account in iTunes and see the purchase. I am confused by your statement:
    "I live in Venezuela, there is some Apple store in my country where I can take it."
    If you go to the Venezuela apple website you can see if/where there are Apple stores.

  • What happens when an iPod is synchronized with an iTunes library that is bigger than the available space on the iPod?

    What happens when an iPod is synchronized with an iTunes library that is bigger than the available space on the iPod? I did this some time ago. On screen was shown available space somewhat less than 120 GB, but maybe somewhere between 10 and 20 GB more in the library. I had to get the iPod updated anyway, so I did proceed. However, afterwards the total content of the library was only about 110 GB. Now I wonder what did actually happen. Was the first sign only corrected for double copies of the same files or lost files or where files deleted from iTunes? And if files where deleted from iTunes, were they also deleted from my computer?

    Same as you would if you bought a pc; copy everything from your old computer to your new one.  Then you can just sync everything from the new computer, as you did with the old one.

  • IPod Updater Code problem? iTunes not connecting with iPod.

    There may be a problem with the iPod updater.
    I have a 15 GB iPod (JQ418QZLQQF)
    Updated iTunes to 5.0.1.4. Connected iPod.
    Got a window...told me to downloaded iPod Updater 9/23/05. Did it.
    Updated iPod. iTunes would start writing and then quit. Got a window; told me to restore iPod.
    Tried restore 7 times. Failed. When iTunes tried to load it stalled, then McAfee Antivirus program hung up, then got messages that it could no longer communicate with iPod ... got (-36) errors.
    Got FAQ sheets. Did everything. Unplugged from internet, disabled antivirus program. No luck.
    Unloaded every non-related program in RAM. No luck.
    Tried iTunes and iPod in SAFE mode. No luck.
    Last error message was "Attempting to copy to the disk "IPOD" failed. An unknown error occurred (-53)"
    Bought 5th generation 20 GB iPod Color. Plugged it in.
    Reformatted it with the 9/23/05 ipod updater. ... iTunes could not connect to it.
    Tried the 9/6/05 updater. Still didn't work.
    Opened the CD that it came with and installed the 6/5/05 ipod updater software. iTunes immediately recognized the new ipod and loaded songs without failure.

    I ran into this on a client system yesterday. Same issue re: new songs with a dock ipod running ver 2.2.
    I tried to update on three separate g4 based macs, each running 10.3.9. On one, the ipod failed to mount. On the other two, the updater gave the message {approx} "the firmware for the update is not present" when the Update button was clicked.
    For no good reason, I tried using the "Update" in the Options menu instead of the button. I immediately got an administer confirmation box, gave the password, and the update proceded correctly. Monkey behavior triumphs. Got to be an installer bug. Try it and let us know if this works for you.
