Problem syncing large photo library

I have a iPad 64GB and cannot sync my iPhoto library of 7000 photos. It syncs then states then when I select the photos on the ipad it hands saying "updating library" then crashes.
The library syncs fine to my iPhone and everything else seems to work - I also have plenty of space left on the iPad. Wierdly I can see and choose all the photos when I goto choose the background images but just cannot access them through the photo app.
Any ideas?

I have one iPhoto library with around 7000 photos, filled in different Albums (around 250) within other folders in iPhoto.
I have tried resetting the iSync history, deleting the iPad iPhoto cache, resetting the iPad etc etc. I have tried to delete any corrupt looking photos and have managed to import the whole iPhoto library to the iPad by selecting to sync it when all the photos are placed in one folder.
I run an art gallery and have different folders for each artist's work. iPhoto is a fantastic tool for this and I have found the iPhone invaluable for showing clients paintings - the iPad should be even better. So it is crucial for me to keep the folders. I have now managed to sync all the folders (and photos) by placing all my artist albums in one folder and selecting that to sync. This works. But what doesn't work is when I select the default, and just sync the entire iPhoto library with Events et al. Then it crashes whilst the Photos App is "Updating Library" after the sync. Then I am left with a malfunctioning iPad which keeps reseting with the Apple logo and spinning wheel inside.
So I have found a work around but it is not exactly perfect - very annoying. Especially as my crappy iPhone 3GS syncs perfectly and can handle all of the folders .....although admittedly not the Events. I wonder if it is the Events that are the problem?

  • Problems syncing large number of photos while choosing all photos option

I have 17,800 photos and have experienced problems with trying to sync in iTunes since release day 1.
If I choose to sync using the all photos option, the iPad will reboot during synch and appears to finish. Ipad will become unresponsive and hang with the apple logo on screen and a hard reset will then be required.
Then when trying to launch photo app in iPad it displays "updating library" for a minute or 2 and then photo app crashes back to home screen.
Have tried many options in trying to solve this including restore iPad software, deleting photo cache in iTunes, rebuilding iTunes library, etc.
Only solution I have found was to break down my 17,800 photos into events and choose to synch events instead of the all photos option and that works, getting all 17,800 photos into iPad. Photos take about 5.8 gb of storage.
There is definitely a problem with iTunes here in synching large number of photos using the all photos option and I have reported this to AppleCare support via two support calls. There does not appear to be a awareness of this issue in tech supports knowledge base and I am surprised to that there are not a large number of incidents reported as there are a few discussions started here on the issues of photo sync.
Hopefully this post will help others with the same issue.

Solved problem of synching iPad with desktop containing large photo library (20,000 photos): In summary, solution was to rename, copy and live iPHoto Library to XHD and reduce size of library on home (desktop) drive.
In the home directory, rename "iPhoto Library" to "iPhoto Global" (or any other name you want), and copy into an external hard drive via simple drag and drop method.
Then, go back to the newly renamed iPhoto Global and rename it again, to iPhoto 2010. Now, open iPhoto by holding down the Alt/Option key and opening iPhoto. This provides option to choose library iPhoto 2010. Open the library, and eliminate every photo before 2010. This got us down to a few thousand photos and a much smaller library. Synch this smaller library with the iPad.
Finally, I suggest downloading a program "iPhoto Library Manager" and using this to organize and access the two libraries you now have (which could be 2, 10 or however many different libraries you want to use.) The iPhoto program doesn't want you to naturally have more than one library, but a download called iPhoto Library Manager allows user to segregate libraries for different purposes (eg. personal, work, 2008, 2009, etc.). Google iPhoto Library Manager, download, and look for links to video tutorials which were very helpful.
I did not experience any problems w/ iPhoto sequencing so can't address that concern.
    Good luck!

  • My iphone storage is full due to my large photo library. As I want to go on taking more photos, if I back up my phone to icloud, can I then delete all my photos from my iphone to make room for new photos?

My iphone storage is full due to my large photo library. As I want to go on taking more photos, if I back up my phone to icloud, can I then delete all my photos from my iphone to make room for new photos? Or will the next time I back up lose all those previously backed up as it is a 'new' set of data?
I just want to find the easiest and safest way of not losing all my photos while being able to take more than my iPhones storage worth as it is already full - can someone help me please? I thought icloud was the solution to not uploading my photos to the mac but I'm not sure if the way it's going is working and don't want to delete photos or lose my phone and then find out what I'm doing isn't actually storing my photos permanently. Thanks

    Hey EmilyEliza,
As you are clearly aware, it is important for you to have backups of your important data, including all of these photos you are currently keeping on your iPhone. While it is possible to use iTunes or iCloud to do backups of your iPhone, the problem becomes how to access those backups if you have deleted the photos from your iPhone. Once you have done the backup and then removed the photos from the iPhone, the only way to access the photos is by restoring the backups to the phone. See this article for information about backups made from the iPhone -
Back up and restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iCloud or iTunes - Apple Support
If you want to easily access the photos once they are off of the iPhone, another approach to this would be to import your photos from the iPhone into an application on your Mac, such as iPhoto. To learn how to do this, use the steps in this article -
Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your Mac or Windows PC - Apple Support
Once those photos are on your computer, it is still important to back up those photos to somewhere else, so you can be sure of their safety before removing them from the iPhone. Your Mac’s Time Machine application is one method of doing this -

  • HT4236 Syncing my photo library to my phone, albums out of order

Syncing my Aperture photo library to my phone from my Yosemite MacBook Pro (I also tried it with iPhoto and same store), the projects (called albums in iPhoto) are all out of order - just random.  I use a naming convention of date then name with the date in the format YYYYMMDD so even if it were to be resorted, they would be in chronological order.  They are in that order within Aperture and also on the screen in iTunes where I select which projects I wish to sync.  But then after syncing, they are all there in the Photos app, but in random order.  I'm a photographer and often need to access a photo from a session that I need to be able to find quickly and I pretty much can find what I need when it's sorted correctly.  I believe this problem only came about after a recent update of the software, which may have been with Yosemite.  Please help.  Thanks.  Steven

  • How to un-sync the "Photo Library" album?

Ok my iphone 4 16g is totally full & there is almost 6g of photos.  The problem seems to be with a folder titled "Photo Library" which has a double of every single photo already on the phone.
How can I un-sync this folder so I can free up a ton of space?

The photos in Photo Library are not duplicates of the photos in the albums (folders) synced from your phone to your computer.  The actual photos are in Photo Library; the albums only contain links to the photos in Photo Library.  The same is true for Camera Roll.  It doesn't contain duplicates of any albums you create on your phone either.  The actual photos are in Camera Roll and the albums only contain links to these photos.
If you want to import the photos from Camera Roll to your computer and then delete them from your phone, see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.  Syncing your phone doesn't touch the Camera Roll, except to include any photos there in the iPhone backup that is created/updated when you sync.

  • Yosemite, iPhoto 9.6 upgrade, large photo library is not recognised.

iMac 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (Early 2009) with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Ram, 1 TB HD.
Just installed OS X Yosemite and iPhoto 9.6.  I didn't run iPhoto immediately after instal, but my wife did while I was gone.  She told me later that iPhoto didn't work and that when she clicked iPhoto, it asked to fix the permissions and after a bit iPhoto became unresponsive so she shut down the computer.
When I opened it, it asked to upgrade the library to work with the new version of iPhoto.  Clicked ok and let it run...it did not last more than 5 minutes.  When trying to open iPhoto now, it pauses for a second, then it displays the initial first time use splash screen (yellow sticky that says how to add photos to iPhoto).
The photo library in the finder shows it to be 230GB which is about the size I remember it to be.  Showing the package contents I can see all of the photos in the "old masters" folder.
    I have tried the following:
    - Re-boot
    - Repairing disk permissions (from recovery mode)
    - Reset PRAM
    - deleted and re-installed iPhoto
    - Utilised all the options in the iPhoto Library First Aid (all take about 1 second to complete)
    - Ran iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild photo library (took under a minute)
I have another copy of the library in another folder as well as an online backup (but all have been updated with the problem library so I don't think that will help much).  As we speak, I am doing a local backup of the photos to an external drive just in case something further were to happen or I need to do a clean instal (don't think I can wait to have all of that download from the online backup).
So if anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated.
    1. Is there anything else I can do to save the database before having to just pull all of the photos out of the library and losing all of the metadata?
    2.  If thats all there is to do, what is easiest and best way to do manually or automate this...and to retain as much of the metadata as possible?

  • Problem syncing stacked photos

I have the latest iTunes and Photoshop Elements 4.0. I've created collections in Photoshop and I'm trying to sync the collections to my iPod. iTunes only sync's photos that are NOT stacked. Thus if I have a collection of 50 photos, but 40 of them are part of a stack, only the remaining 10 photos sync to the iPod.
I have thousands of photos in Photoshop, and stacking is an important organzation feature for me. I don't want to unstack them just so that I can sync them to my iPod.
I'd like to use the collections as a way to sync a subset of photos and keep them logically organized on my iPod. (I don't want to sync ALL photos)
Any ideas on how to solve this?

Figured it out.  Somehow the extension changed from JPEG to JPG.  Changing it back sloved the problem.

  • Problems syncing iPad photos and Aperture

I think my iPod Photo database is corrupting for some reason as I keep getting intermittent problems syncing photos from Aperture across to my iPad.
Running Lion 10.7 on a Mac Mini with Aperture 3.1.3 and each time I get the error if I delete the iPod Photo folder it will do a full resync the next time I connect, but with over 5000 photos it takes some time.
Anyone had a similar problem or know why it might be doing it?
    Thanks

From your words "syncing with my old iMac" it appears that you are now syncing to a different computer. What might work for directly imported photos (emailed, CCK, screen shots) is to connect your iPad to your new computer and right click on the iPad in the left part of iTunes and select the backup option. When that is complete then you right click and select transfer purchases. Then let iTunes erase the Ipad and replace it with the contents of iTunes on the new computer and then restore from backup
Photos synced to the iPad are not included in the backup and those will be lost unless you can get them from your original computer. However, there may be some third-part computer programs that can get the synced photos off the iPad.
For what are in backups see:

  • Why does Iphone sync the photo library folder when it is not checked in itunes.

    Hi,
I have any iPhone 4 running 4.3.3. iOS. I recently synced photos in iphoto 6 and selected the folders i wanted I wanted to sync in iTunes.  after the sync, the folders that i wanted to sync are there, but also the photo library folder is there.  I wish to not have the photo library folder there since it is just a duplication of what is in the other folders that i have asked iTunes to sync.   Any Suggestions???

Well, actually it is not a duplication. The Photos app stores photos the same way that iPhoto does. All photos synced to your phone are stored in the "Photo Library". The photos you see in the various albums/folders are really pointers to the actual photos which are in your photo library. They are not duplicates, and no you cannot get rid of the Photo Library.

  • Syncing with Photo Library

I had about 1,000 pictures on my MacBook on iPhoto. All these photos got synced with my iPhone 3G. I had a boo boo on my Mac and reinstalled the OS. All 1,000 some photos were deleted from my MacBook. But these photos are still on my iPhone in my Photo Library, I don't want to lose these photos. Can I get them back on my MacBook?

Keep in mind that the photos on the iPhone have been resized and scaled down into an iPhone compatible format.
This program should allow you to extract them, though you will lose quality:

  • Problems Accessing iPhone Photo Library - Wild

Having some issues accessing or even finding the photos stored on my device.
    iPhone 4S iOS 5.1
Image Capture only sees the "Camera Roll" (500 or so pictures in there) but I can't access anything else.
Here's how my Photo Library is structured on my device:
    Camera Roll (518)
    Photo Library (2,385)
    Old Camera (741)
    Old Library (1,644)
I can't access the last three using Image Capture, iPhoto - can't even find any of these photos via 3rd party file browser utilites. I've also mounted the iPhone to disk but can't find photos anywhere. (I've tried showing/hiding hidden files in OS X - still nothing)
It's strange - they're obviously on the device somewhere.
    Any ideas?

Neither iPhoto or Image Capture will see any photos on your phone other than photos in your camera roll. The photos in your library are photos that were synced to your phone. The photo sync is one-way: Computer to Phone. The only way to extract these photos from your phone is through the use of third-party software, like this:

  • Problems syncing new photos

Just tried - several times - to sync new photos from PC to iPhone and they are not showing up on my iphone! Help! never had this problem with my iphone 3 but my iphone 4 seems to have all sorts of teething problems. Any advice would be gratefully received.

It's the ios4 that's causing this problem. It's happening on my 3gs too. If you look under wallpapers you will find your photos there.
Hit the home button twice to bring up the multitask bar. Find the photo app, keep your finger on the app for a few seconds until the red - appears. Hit the red - to close the photo app. Hit the home button once more to go back to your home page. Then open the photo app again and your photos should be there.

  • Problem publishing large photo albums

I'm using iWeb (iLife'08) to create several a photo gallery: there is a page with the gallery showing all the albums, and each album has 100 to 200 pictures. The albums were created in iPhoto and "inserted" into iWeb using iWeb's media tools.
Publishing to .Mac has been very frustrating: 1st time I created the entire site, with 10 albums (2000+ pictures all together) and a couple of regular text pages. When I tried to publish iWeb took forever, went into working in the background and eventually came back with an error about not being able to connect to .Mac and to check my internet connection. Needless to say I checked it and it was all good: able to login, plenty of iDisk space available, etc.
2nd time I decided to start with just one album in the gallery. This time it worked. I started adding (to iWeb) one album at a time and then publishing "changes". It takes some time but it works. However, if I change anything in one album (already published) and add a new album iWeb will again take forever just to come back with an error about the connection to .Mac.
is there a practical limit to the size of albums in iWeb? Should I use iPhoto directly to create a photo gallery in .Mac and use iWeb to link to it? What is the best way to use these tools to create a large photo gallery?

Keep it down to about 24 photos per album and 6 albums per page. You can always add more album pages and have an index page to get to them.
