Problem Time Machine with Hard Disk iOmega 750 GB USB Desktop
When time machine try to format the HD on Mac Os Plus format: fail. Time Machine can't format he HD and it disappears. I try to format in disk utilities and only can in MS DOS FAT mode, in Mac Os Plus: fail. Please help me. Thanks.
Just found the solution in a post from Christopher Wolf. (Thanks again, Christopher!)
"If you attach a drive which is greater than 512GB in size and comes pre-formatted using the Master Boot Record (MBR) partition scheme then you will need to re-partition the drive using either the Apple Partition Map or GUID Partition Table partition scheme before it will be usable by Time Machine.
To re-partition the drive, open Disk Utility, select the entire drive, select the Partition tab, select "1 partition", select the "Options" button, and then select either "Apple Partition Map" or "GUID Partition Table", click OK to dismiss the sheet, click "Apply" to repartition the drive. All existing data on the drive will be erased! "

Hi, we recently bought a new iMac with Mavericks and a Lacie 5big thunderbolt series disk. At the Lacie disk we configured as they were 2 hard dsik of 4 Tb each one and added to time machine. Today the user called saying that time machine only made 2 copies one general at 4pm and the other one at the second disk at 7pm and no more copies until 10pm.
I know that time machine makes copies every hour, every day , every month, etc; so we were thinking why it only made 3 copies in that mount of time and why it took the second disk. In the old iMac with Lion this never happened.
Any idea about this?.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

Safari Crashes On Startup after restore from Time Machine after hard disk crash
I have a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.7.4, 4 GB memory , 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. My 160 GB hard disk crashed two weeks ago and was replaced by the apple store. I was backed up on a 500 GB Time Capsule and restored my system from that source. Everything works appropriately except Safari (Version 5.1.6).
Steps taken to date based on discussions here:
1. Updated all software
2. Booted in safe mode, still crashes
3. Booted as guest, still crashes
Any additional help I can get would be appreciated. In the meantime I have been using Firefox, but all the links that go from email or browswer messages load Safari and it crashes every time.
Thanks, G. Silver

I think I solved this. From another question on the forum, I found the following:
Download and install Safari 6 from this link (it's the link used by software update to download Safari6 for Lion 10.7.4) :
http://swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/37/23/041-5058/lr5tynbldi18zcrqo8a8uq88 rnjushqliu/Safari6Lion.pkg
I did this and Safari 6.0 is now up and running without crashing and all my bookmarks etc were preserved.
Thanks for pointing me in the correct direction. I would stll be interested in why Software Update wouldn't download Safari 6.0.
All the best,

Time Machine with Multiple Disk
I wanted to know if it is possible to have multiple time machine disk. I was thinking about have one disk at home, and taking another disk offsite. I was thinking about switching these disc out like once a month or something like that so I always have a copy of my Itunes Library and other important files off site, and also so that I have another backup incase both my Imac hard drive, and my backup drive both stop working at the same time.
Can you "fool" Time Machine into backing up to two separate volumes by giving them the same name?
You wouldn't connect them at the same time... you'd connect one at work during the day and the other at home at night time.
That way one backup (the one at work, say) stores all your changes during the course of the day and then the other one (say at home) backs up all your changes made at night.
They would each, of course, back up all changes made since last connected (for example, as soon as you connect your "home" drive it will automatically back up all the changes you made during the day in one fell swoop, then make incremental backups during the rest of the evening).
PS: I am using SuperDuper right now to clone a TM backup to another drive but I want to be able to use both drives in turn to make incremental backups (once I've completed the clone). -
I am using Time machine with an external hard drive...
for the first 6 months it was working great no problem...now the time machine logo in the top right of the desktop just keeps spinning constently..i stop it manually and starts again and doesnt stop until i do. Botht eh hard drive and the iMac have been restarted. any thoughts? Thanks
Why would what matter?
You can look here for possible alternatives if you prefer:
A whole lot about Time Machine for help with TM problems. Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM. See also Mac 101- Time Machine. -
Problem using Time Machine with Seagate BackUp Plus Pls HELP!!
I have a late 2006 iMac (running OS 10.5.8) & am trying to back up using Time Machine with a new Seagate BackUp Plus drive. When I select the Seagate drive in Time Machine it tells me I msut first erase the (Seagate) disk. When I hit ERASE, I get a Time Machine error : COULD NOT UNMOUNT DISK. I see from various posts that 10,5 & 10,6 have issues with some external drives so want to upgrade to Mavericks (to get around this incompatibility issue): HOwever apparently my iMac is too old (by 1 year) to allow this. Can anyone give me any advice on how to get my iMac content backed up via Time Machine using the Seagate BackUP PLus drive I bought (becasue it is supposedly "compatible with PCs & Macs".
Thank you!!
WendyYour Seagate drive should work just fine. If it doesn't have any important data on it, try re-formatting it with Disk Utility to blank it out. Or run the Disk verify/repair and see if you can get it to fix any problems.
I have a Drobo FS too. You probably need a firmware update, they issued one a while back to fix problems with Time Machine. Use the Dashboard or download it from their support site, http://www.drobo.com/support/updates.php
Just curious how long you let it run after it "stalled". If it is a big file it could just be taking a while to copy over, do you see activity lights on the USB drive? The first time you use time machine let it run overnight, it's going to take a while, after that it will update quickly.
While you're at it, you might want to verify your start-up disk too with Disk Utility. -
I use Time Machine with an external hard disc which has worked perfectly for some years. Recently Time Machine has aborted backups if the screen saver starts when back-up is in progress. I use a Maxtor OneTouch4 back-up system. Any ideas?
Has Apple recently up-dated my OS (Lion) such that every time the screen saver starts it disables Time Machine. I have to switch-off the computer and re-start in order to undertake a back-up. I have now switched of all screen savers. Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) -
Time Machine with Ethernet network hard drive ???
I would like to buy a WD World Edition Ethernet hard-drive.
Can I use Time machine with an Ethernet drive plugged on my Ethernet router ??
(a SFR box - French ISP provider)yes, I've read the article and others links, and there's some issues. When the NAS disk is full using this hint, some datas can be lost. Not recommanded.
Too bad ! I've not bought it yet, but it's seems a good product anyway for others uses (shared with others Macs, PCs, iTunes server with AAC support...)
but another disk is needed for TM... GRRRR. Now I hesitate to buy it.

Can I increase the capacity of Time Machine with an external hard drive connected to Time Capsule via the USB port? My current Time Machine has a total capacity of 1TB. I'd like to double or triple its memory. I don't want to use the external hard drive in lieu of the Time Capsule hard drive. I'd like to use it in addition to. Just don't know if/how it's possible.
This is another one of those questions that I've searched the web for answers, and have gotten tricky answers back. So now I'm trying to introduce a clean slate to the mix.
Thank you for your time!Well, what you mentioning is possible. However, I don't know whether it's supported (as in, "easy to set up."). Time Machine officially supports backing up to a locally attached drive, to a machine running a Time Machine server (i.e. running OS X Server software), and to a Time Capsule. I don't know that it officially supports a drive attached to an AirPort or to a Time Capsule. Though I know some people have gotten it to work.
Best I can say is to try it. Plug the drive into the Time Capsule, ensure it's shared on the network, and then try and set it as a backup target from a machine in the Time Machine backup panel (you'll need to ensure it's mounted first). If it works, you're all set. -
Time Machine with multiple hard drives
I use a very large external hard drive for time machine. I back up to this time machine, the two hard drivs that are inside my macbook pro, 512GB ssd, and 250GB SSD that is in the optical drive. I then backup a 1TB portable hard drive which holds all my movies and then I backup another 1Tb portable hard drive which holds all my "reserve" files, which means they are files that are no longer important to be on my computer. Old pictures, music, etc.
Now, I can't plug all of these drive's in at once. So, let's say I have to do a backup and I have nothing plugged in but the time machine external hard drive. Will it only backup the two hard drives that are in my computer and then later somehow let me go and restore the other drives? Or will it attempt to restore all 4 drives at one time? Because if the one in my computer mess's up, the other's may not be messed up and I do not want it to restore those.
I have used Time Machine before to restore my system. But never since I have started adding extra drives for Time Machine to backup.
I am also planning on adding, yet another drive for it to backup which is a 1TB portable hard drive that I keep raw files on for photography. I'm just curious how this works when and if the time comes.well superduper is FREE, CCC isnt.........CCC can do the daily updates etc,. Superduper DOES NOT. the CCC and Superduper CLONES are bootable.......so, if your HD crashes, you can throw in the CLONE, and youre back and running in mins, rather than hours etc .
You should NEVER consider a backup a "backup", ........2 copies is 1, and 1 is none.....always have 2 copies of important files / pics etc etc,......... DECADES of work have been lost by people who thought their stuff was safe because they had a (meaning 1) backup.
Simplicity? Yes, Simplicity is my religion. CLONE your HD with programs and settings, ......and use a 2nd HD updated daily / weekly etc (preferable 2 such 'seecond' harddrives, copies of each other) with all personal stuff / work / pics / vids/ documents.....
superficially time machine is simpler, "smack a button and everything backs up".......in REALITY however when it "all goes up in flames"................the pro method (and my method) is QUICKER and more reliable by far to get down and running.
Ive restored other peoples from total crash and burns via Time machine.......and "my" way............my way always ends up faster by a mile. Also personal / work etc files are kept autonomous to the system data / programs OS,.....as it logically should be.
Time machine is the fastest incremental backup........but its as slow as paint peeling if you need it in case of a TOTAL CRASH.......wherein a bootable clone can be thrown in , in less than 20 mins. -
Setting Up Time Machine with a Partitioned External Hard Drive
I recently bought a new external hard drive (MyPassport) and I was advised to partition it in order to keep my movies/music files separate from the rest of my files. So I partitioned it, but now I can't figure out how to set up the Time Machine with 2 separate hard drives. Is there a way to set it up so that I can use Time Machine for both, one for movies/music and one for everything else?

Verifying Time Machine with Disk Utility
Is it normal for it to take a while (13 minutes) to verify a Time Machine drive using disk utility? My computer specs are listed below fyi.
It depends on how much data (more how many files that total size) is on the disk.
It will also vary depending on whether it's a USB, FireWire 400, or FireWire 800 connection.
In general, 13 minutes isn't terribly long -- TM backups have a rather unusual and complex structure, involving "hard links" at both the file and directory (folder) level, so there's a lot to do.
And don't bother running +*Verify Disk.+* Just run +*Repair Disk.+* The amount of time required is the same.
+*Verify Disk+* is really only useful to check your internal HD while you're running from it, since you can't repair the disk you're running from. -
G72-250US Notebook , Win 7 64 Home Premium,
Error :
When i login " There is a eminent problem with Hard disk, SMART check faled" ,Prmary hard disk self test failed .
Please help me with ths problemHi,
If this message is coming up in a black screen.
Then the harddrive in the system is about to go bad or already bad.
If you are able to boot to windows, FIRST BACKUP DATA.
Also run a startup test by tapping F2 as soon as you power on the system.
The smart test is a BIOS feature in most of the computer which is designed to keep cust informed if the HDD is about to go bad. But their are instances where the SMART will only let you know that the HDD is bad only when the HDD has bad.

There is error displaying that there is a problem with hard disk please back up your data and contact manfature. I purchased these recently in 2011 december in india. Please help me what to do.
The error usually means what it says. Back up your data to a thumb drive or something before it crashes and call HP Support for a hard drive replacement.
