Problem transfering an image during a Video chat

I can send images to a couple of friends by droping the image on the upper half of the video chat window. They get an "Incoming File Transfer" dialogue box which they must first clik on and then choose Save. But for one friend with an iMac using leopard the save buttons do not appear. He gets the first window of Incoming File Trans but when he clicks on it it does not open up further with the Save button or Decline buttons showing. What have we over looked?

If he is getting the File put in his Downloads folder he probably has Auto Accept On.
He may have a modem that does not like the fact IChat uses port 5190 on TCP to Login and 5190on UDP to Send files
In this case he may benefit from going to iChat menu > Preferences > Accounts
Logging out of AIM (Deselect Use this Account)
Then is Server Settings change the port to 443

  • Problem transferring JVC Everio HD Camcorder Video files to ZEN 1

I can't seem to succesfully transfer video files recorded by my JVC Everio hard dri've camcorder to my ZEN. The files as originally downloaded from camcorder to PC are?.MOD format which is not visible to ZEN Explorer as a videofile and will not convert at all. I?changed the file extension to .AVI?and these are now visible and will convert and transfer, but?cannot be played by my ZEN.
Has anybody else had similar problems, or?does anybody have any suggestions?p.s. I have succesfully transfered other video files including AVI files?recorded using my Fuji stills camera.

welcome batman to the  board ...
well... the iApps iMovie and iDVD are meant to work
    with firewire connected miniDV camcorders...
you lose the convenience of the iApps... anyhow:
    Streamclip
(free) is the weapon of choice, in case, your
    HDcorder stores as mpeg1...
for mpeg2 conversion, you need additionally the Apple
    mpeg2 plugin (20$) ...
    helpful?
    Thanks for the quick response!
Well, I think they are in mpeg2 format, but not positive. Anyway, I did away with miniDV camcorders because they transfer much slower to the computer than the HD camcorder...but now I get this issue! lol I guess that's what I get for switching to a Mac!
Is there any other way besides the $20 plugin to convert the file? Will the plugin lose any quality in the conversion process?

  • IChat audio not working during video chats

For the last month or so I have been unable to get normal audio connections during iChat video chats.
The person on the other end can hear me, but the audio I hear from them pops in and out and frequently seems muted. I thought it was their computer at first, but now the problem seems to be happening to me chatting with different people that are on different computers. It's also not an internet problem at my home, because the problem occurs consistently when I am at different locations, in different cities.
It's not my mute button, and I've checked my sound preferences in system preferences and everything looks okay. This seems to be associated with a system software upgrade and I'd love to know how to fix it. Running OS 10.6.4 on a MacBook Pro 17".
I read some of the other discussions on this topic and couldn't find a solution, or anything I could easily understand how to fix.
    Thanks for any help!

    Hi,
iChat 5 uses your whole Internet speed.
This is different to iChat 4 and Earlier that was capped by what was set in System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming (Also not there in Snow Leopard).
If you and your Buddy are on vastly different Internet speed iChat will try to match the lowest Upload speed at both end.
After that Buffering tries to smooth out the natural variances in Connection speed you have.
This is where the issue mostly lies.
iChat has always tended to drop Audio before any picture issue show up.
As the Max setting in Quicktime was 1.5Mbps a 5% or even 10% variance was handled by iChat.
However in iChat 5 you may be on a 20Mbs+ service both Up and down and 5% of this is more than can be handled by the iChat Buffering.
What you can do is Limit iChat in the iChat Menu > Preferences > Video/Audio section > Bandwidth Limit.
Set it to 500kbps as a start.
Get your Buddy to do the same no matter what version they have.
If this is successful then try the 1Mb setting.
You can change during a chat.
If you have the Connection Doctor Open (Video Menu) you can watch the Bit rates change as the Buffering smooths this out.
Get you Buddy to Increase his Bandwidth Limit once the Bit rate has smoothed out.
Essentially repeat for each increase until you find what speed you can manage predictably and works with the most amount of Buddies.
    NOTES:
Don't try below 200kbps. The real world lower Limit is 100kbps and you need some for any variances if someone only has 128kbps upload.
384Kbps is the lower limit for a 4 way Video chat with you as Host, so 500kbps is more than enough. You will only see figures in the Connection Doctor above this if both ends are on a very fast service. (Higher speeds as Host does stop 3rd and 4th Buddies causing a quality drop off).
Things that can impinge on your Connection Speed are other computers such as one doing a Download of something. You are left with a smaller Portion (Bandwidth).
Other apps also use some Bandwidth which is why iChat refers to the control as Bandwidth Limit - allowing enough for other apps.

  • Is there a way to trigger the exhaust fan during video chat?

The exhaust fan usually works during say...youtube videos or other activities that heat the laptop up, but it never comes on during skype video chats. This makes the laptop extremely hot. Is there a particular reason it doesn't turn on to prevent overheating?

Install smcFanControl to manually adjust fan speeds.

  • Video chat: over-seas

    Hello all,
I know video chat connection problems have been addressed a lot already in this forum, but I haven't been able to find one that was specific enough to my situation.
I've been trying to video chat with a friend that lives in Spain, and we haven't successfully connected even once so far. We can instant message with no problems, but when we try to video chat it gives us both messages like: "Ben/Lindsey did not respond" "... insufficient bandwidth" and "Lindsey cancelled connection."
With previous problems, I've suspected my router of having a firewall I don't know about. I have no idea if that could be the problem, but even if it's not, is there a way to check?
The report iChat prepared after our last failed video chat attempt is as follows:

Any error log is almost useless without knowing what modem and routers it is going through that may be the casue of the issue.
Error 7 is normally a software protection feature of the modem or router.
It could be that it is Not Responding to Internet Pings or that it has over zealous DOS or SPI protection as modern Internet Speeds can be greater than ther default setting.

  • "vcencoder" process slowing video chats

During all video chats my Macbook begins to heat up, the fan kicks into gear and friends on the other line tell me my video quality is degraded. My processor seems to be getting overloaded, and I've discovered that the "vcencoder" process is eating up 40-70% of my power, while the "ichat" process itself wants another 50% or so.
Is this normal? Is there any way to not have my machine overloaded like this?
I've tried rebooting and even reinstalling iChat, but to no avail.

Did you use ChatFX or ShowMacster Add-ons in iChat 3 ?
    Have you deleted them ?
10.4.10 broke ChatFX and it should have been deleted then.
I take it this never fails with an Error log number ?
Can you check Users/(your account)/Library/Logs/iChatConnectionsErrors and see if you have any since upgrading to Leopard.
If you Open one it will open in Console and drop to the Bottom of the Log.
It is likely to be very long.
The bottom is all the Binary Images info of what was open at the time
It will list at the top of that section what was involved in iChat's start up.
SO at the start of the Binary Images does it mention in the first 5 or 6 lines anything about the Add-Ons I mention ?

  • PlayBook Contact & Calendar Sync/Video Chat - can't get them to work

I love my PlayBook ((OS 2.1.0.1088) and as a BB9790 user had never bothered to try to use native contacts/calendar applications until recently when a couple of relatives bought PBs and asked me questions. I have a number of GMail accounts which work brilliantly for mail receiving and sending on the PB, but have failed totally to get contacts and calendar to sync despite selecting that option for one of these. In desparation created a new Hotmail account, imported some key Outlook contacts and tried to sync them with my PB. Nothing. If I try to create a new contact I always get the message after tapping to enter the contact information: "Application was interrupted. Please close and open it again to continue." If I do that and restart contacts, nothing changes. I tried deleting all my email accounts and starting again with a GMail as the primary email with sync for contacts and calendar, but the problem persists. This also impacts Video Chat as it uses the same contact application so is unusable. If I search Contacts it appears to do a remote lookup but never finds any contacts.
The Calendar application when opened just shows the Calendar app icon in the top left corner with 31 and no calendar. Swiping down to show the settings, indicates 3 GMail calendars from different accounts are in place and if I press refresh it suggests a sync is taking place but no calendar framework ever appears, let alone entries.
Would appreciate any suggestions as I have read all the related PB contacts' forums which haven't offered a solution to this particular issue. Thanks

  • Can ANYONE with 10.4.8 do video chats?

    Hi all..
I've been having all kinds of problems doing iChat audio and video chats--various combinations of me not hearing and/or seeing them, or vice versa; plus plenty of "not responding" errors (error -8). Occasionally it will work, but the next time we try, it usually doesn't. I've been working with a few people having OS's ranging from 10.3.9 to 10.4.8, and Macs ranging from Powerbook G4s, Powermac Dual G5s, Intel MacMini, MacBook, and MacBook Pro. Following advice I've seen on the Web, I've tried port-forwarding ports 5060, 5190, 5220, 5222, 5297, 5298, 5353, 16384-16403 in my router or the other persons', or not forwarding them, opening those same ports in the Mac OSX firewalls, or not, turning the firewalls off in one or both Macs, turning them both on, same for the routers and modems, quitting and restarting iChat, rebooting both machines, etc.
The common denominator in all these experiments I've conducted is this: if both the Macs are behind routers (different routers) and one or both are running 10.4.8, iChat cannot be consistently used to do video chats. (It can work occasionally, but definitely not every time.) If neither Mac is running 10.4.8, it works, even with the firewalls up.
So, my question is: is there anyone out there running 10.4.8 that can do video chats consistently? If so, what's your secret? Thanks!

    Powerbook G4 1.25 GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I have no problems with 10.4.8 and video chat.
I do NOT have any of the cited ports open on my computer or port forwarded on my DSL modem/router (an ActionTec GT701-WG running an ISP-specific firmware load for Qwest Communications, my ISP). I am NAT'ed here at home, using static IP addrress assignment on the home LAN. One of my sons who lives here in Colorado, too, has a G5 iMac on Comcast Cable, and, like me, has no iChat-related ports open on his computer or port forwarded on his cable modem/router. He is also NAT'ed and is running 10.4.8 with latest security update. He's not static IP on the home LAN -- his modem is dishing out "192.168.1.x" DHCP addresses. Similarly, my other son, who lives in Florida, has an iMac G5, I'm 85% sure that he is on a cable connection, too. He is NAT'ed and is running 10.4.8 with latest security update and has no iChat-related ports open on his computer or port forwarded on his cable modem/router. He is DHCP, too, on the home LAN. We can all talk to one another. Unfortunately, my Quicksilver computer is too slow to do multi-user conference, but I have ichat AV'ed with each of them individually and they tell me they iChatAV with one another.
My work-provided Powerbook G4, running 10.4.8 with latest security update, also works between most hotels' networks and home, from as close as Cheyenne WY to as far away as Sydney Australia. I have no iChat-related ports open on my Powerbook. On my most recent business travel trip to Phoenix AZ, in addition to touching bases with the spouse at home, I multi-conferenced with both sons on it. That was cool. I had never multi-user conferenced before.
I am unable to iChat AV with anyone from my work computer (or my work-owned laptop affiliated to their LAN), though. Apparently, once the connection tries to migrate from oscar.aol.com to handoff traffic for establishing P2P SIP, snatmap, A/V, etc., connections, my work's firewall blocks all that stuff because, I am presuming, it doesn't look like traffic on those ports (5060, 5678, etc.) is "established" but rather appears as uninvited inbound traffic, so it gets blocked and the call crashes, regardless of who calls whom. Our IT guy won't open destination ports 5060, 5678, 16384-16403 from any IP to my IP, so, no iChatAV capability from work. It's too bad there wasn't a way to port-forward the P2P traffic over a ssh tunnel.
While on the road (i.e., business travel), I confess that I have had a few problems with audio/video distortion, dropped calls, or unable to connect reliably, but not many instances of that -- not very many at all. I suspect that these occurrences have had more to do with choked bandwidth or lots of fading or interference on the wireless channel on the hotel connection more than anything else.
When I have read these threads in this forum, they seem to indicate, to me, anyways, that perhaps the routers/hubs installed between the computer and the DSL/cable modem are the likely culprits for crappy or no iChatAV sessions. You might want to focus your attention on these devices, until a more robust iChatAV comes out, if ever.

  • Can initiate video chats, but not successfully recevie invites

So the problem is that I can initiate video chats with everyone on my list, and that works great. The problem is that when they try to initiate a video chat with me, I get the dreaded Error -8 and Failed to start video because: 'I' did not respond. I've tried most things that I've found in these forums - firewall port fowarding and to no avail.
I've tried bypassing my router (Airport Extreme) and go straight through my cable modem that has no firewall, and I get the same results.
Firewall on my MacBook is off. I tried turning it on and forward the ports there with no effect. I'm testing with 2 different people, on has a MacBook with iChat 3 and the other a PC with AIM 6.1 - I can initiate video chats successfully with each, but get the error if they try to call me. If either of us are on the same network, chat works fine both ways so that would indicate a port forwarding issue or firewall to me, but none of the settings I've tried so far are helping. Anyone have any ideas?
Cable modem is a Thomson DCM 425 if that matters.

    Hi,
It seems reading the User Manual that it will route via a hub over Ethernet. However the USB section says that a windows machine has to enable UPnP to be allowed through the XP firewall.
That would allow a minimalist set up of DHCP and UPnP allowing several computers to use the internet with no further action.
It does not seem to be VoIP aware to be able to use a Phone over the internet.
It would seem will have to look further for the cause.
In the System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall tab > Advanced button is Block UDP traffic ON/selected ?
Is the Stealth option Active ?

  • Trying to get video chat working between mac and pc

im trying to get video chat working between a mac and pc
    pc-running xp with aim 6.0
will updating to aim 6.1 fix this ?
we can text chat with no problem
we can not audio or video chat
    any help would be great
    thanks santini

    Hi Z,
Lets check the Port Forwarding at your end.
Does this Zyxel have UPnP at all ?
If so use that and disable the Port Forwarding.
If not then these ports need to be forwarded.
I will list with Protocols as some device need these.
TCP 5190 for AIM Login and text chats (can be substituted for 443)
TCP 5220, 5222 and 5223 for Jabber (the last is for OS X servers and GoogleTalk)
TCP 5298 this is part of the Bonjour set up for iChat if you have other Macs
UDP 5060 this is for the SIP negotiation that iChat needs
UDP 5678 this is where the visible invites come and go out on.
UDP 5190 for AIM file sending and Group chats
UDP 16384-16403 This group of 20 ports is where any Audio or Video chat takes place.
As the 443 port is below 1024 (the NAT threshold) you should not have to Forward this.

  • Receiving mail or Checking for mail causes iChat to cancel video chat

I video chat with my wife on my home computer daily. We are both up to date with our leopard updates. We are both using port 443 in ichat. We both have quicktime streaming set to 1.5 Mbps.
Multiple times thru out the day our video connection is severed. Every time this happens, mail.app is checking for or receiving mail.
Any insight as to why this could be happening?

Can you tell us what sort of Speeds are seen in the iChat Connection Doctor during a Video chat ?
The Connection Doctor is in the Video Menu.
Also what speeds are both ends getting ?
http://www.speedtest.net/ Select a Server and it will Start (rather than pressing the Big green button top right).

  • Lion to Snow Leopard missing audio during video chat

    Hello,
After upgrading one of my MacBook Pros to Lion, I've been encountering a consistent problem when attempting to engage in a video chat with my parents who are using a MacBook that is still running Snow Leopard.
Prior to the Lion upgrade, video chats worked flawlessly, but after the Lion upgrade, the audio coming from the Snow Leopard machine is completely gone. Video alone works fine in both directions, and the Snow Leopard client is receiving audio from the Lion client, but the Lion client is not receiving any audio from the Snow Leopard client according to the iChat connection doctor.
    Not a missing update/firmware issue-
Both machines have all the latest OS updates applied.
    Not a hardware deficiency issue-
Both machines were able to engage in flawless video chats using iChat prior to one machine being upgraded to Lion.
    Not a bandwidth issue-
MacBook Pro (Lion) is hard wired to an ethernet connection which ties into a fiber optic connection 100Mbit/100Mbit (down/up).
MacBook (Snow Leopard) is hard wired to an ethernet connection tied into a AT&T Uverse connection 24Mbit/3Mbit (down/up).
As a troublshooting step, each machine was tested with iChat bandwidth limitation set to 500k, 1Mbit, and 2Mbit.
    Not a ports issue-
As a troublshooting step, both machines were placed into each respective LAN/WAN DMZ.
    Not a firewall issue-
Both machines are not running with a firewall enabled.
    Not a network configuration issue-
Video chat continues to work flawlessly between Snow Leopard only clients from the same networks over the Internet (tested with additional Snow Leopard clients on my end that have yet to be upgraded to Lion).
Not a microphone or sound configuration issue
First thing checked, double checked, and checked again.
After checking the connection doctor within iChat during one of the problematic video chats, it reveals that "audio quality" from the Snow Leopard client is always 0%.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?  Moreover, is there a solution?
BTW, Facetime video calls between all clients work fine, but we all hate Facetime and prefer to continue using iChat.
Any help would be sincerely appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
SoundFLower is an Add-on to the System that then appears in the System Preferences > Sound pane as well as being an App.
It allows the Mic (or input device) to be used by two apps at once.
It can also take the output of one app and get in to another.
    Sound.
IN certain versions of iChat and with certain Headsets you can have issues if the iChat is set "first" the the System Preferences are set Second.
In both iChat and System Preferences > Sound > Input chose any other device/input other that the propsed headset.
The chose the Headset's mic for the System Preferences
Now set the mic for iChat
Repeat for System Preferences > Sound > Output and the Headphone side.
    What is Arriving
Whilst a chat is going on open the Connection Doctor (Video Menu)
On the Stats tab/button you will get a live read out of Bitrate and Framerate and a visual representation of the incoming Video and Audio feed.
Bit rate will vary based on what you pay for and what the Bandwidth Settings is. (you can change it "Live" during a  chat and see the Buffering change the rate slowly).
The Framerate should be at least 15fps
Intels can be higher whit 30fps being the top rate.
The Visual bars should be green and 100%
They may vary if your service varies to much.
    Buffering
    Any Internet service will vary.
iChat has  buffering mechanism to cope with this
Earlier versions of iChat were limited by the Quicktime Streaming setting that used to be in System Preferences (Up until Leopard).
Now iChat and Messages can make use of All your bandwidth.
The Buffering will drop frames in an effort to keep up if someone is sending more data than you can handle.
There comes a point when it judges it will lose sense of the Audio due the number of dropped frames and it will cut the Audio.
If the Audio bar is showing nothing then check the Bitrate.
Let me know what you see.
Comparisons with you other computer would be useful.

  • Audio and Video Chat problems

I have a G5 at home and have a MacBook Pro on the road and I am trying to video chat with my finacee (me using my mac account, her using an AOL IM account). We can text chat and send files through iChat, but if we try audio or video chat we both get the following error message. We both tried a test buddy (appleu3test01) and it worked fine, but we still can not chat with each other. I don't know what else to do.
There was a communication error during your chat. iChat encountered errors while communicating with participants in this chat. You can send details about the problems to Apple to help improve future versions of iChat.

  • Help - no audio during video chat

During video chats with another mac user, we both have video and can see each other, but neither of us has any audio. When we do just an audio chat, we can both hear each other without a problem.
This happens on my MBP with 10.6 and iChat 5.0.1 and on my PBG4 with 10.5 and iChat 4.0.8. The other computer is an iMac with 10.4 and iChat 3.1.9.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
So this is Linksys Modem that can Route with a Airport in Bridge Mode ?
    Good.
IS it using UPnP (in the Administration tab) ?
If it is then Port Forwarding, Port Triggering and DMZ should be Off in Gaming and Applications.
In Security tab (if it has one) the Firewall should be disabled (If it has a setting) as this interferes with iChat.
The Bit about "Responding to Anonymous Requests (pings) should also be set to Allow them (ichat Sends a Ping).
I have had a Netgear DG634G and currently a Sagem 2504 Fast Modem that both Report "Port Restricted". It is not a deal breaker.
More interesting is that you see no incoming Audio.
Get the Buddy to check his System Preferences > Sound > Input tab has the volume high enough and the device here and in iChat > Preferences > Video Section match in the Microphone drop down.
He/she should also check the Video Menu and that Microphone Enabled is ticked.
If those things are in place then try the Bandwidth in iChat at 500kbps
(Try it at both ends, then use the Connection Doctor > Statistics to change one end at a time to higher settings - wait for the Bit rate to settle).
The Bit rates you are seeing look OK (As does the other info)
The Bit rates at the Buddies end should have got a Message from iChat that the Connection is too low (Below 50kbps) for a Video chat.
Are you sure these are from the same Conversation ?
If the Buddy is on Leopard or Below they should go to System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming and change the setting to 1.5Mbps to get iChat to "see" as much as is practical of the internet speed.
It is almost as if they and doing a Download at the same time (Or another computer is taking all the Bandwidth)
What Internet Upload and Download Speeds are they paying for ?
What are they actually getting ?
Click the yellow star And the Start Test box.
If you are connecting in Video chat with th VPN active I don't think this is an issue (unless it is using up lots of Bandwidth - you results suggest not).
The issue seems to be at the odd results your Buddy is getting.

  • Sound Bleeps during Video Chat

Just purchased a Kindle Fire HDX for my dad so we can video chat, he is a novice computer user and was able to answer a chat from me with no changes to Skype as it was installed. During our chat on his side he kept getting sound bleeps every few minutes. I use Skype on a laptop so couldn't help much. He said the only setting he could find regarding sound was to uncheck a box for notification sound, but that didn't change anything. Can anyone using Skype on a tablet please advise me how to coach him to set up his Skype to eliminate this problem?

Have him check his outgoing video format the next time he hears the beep. The default outgoing video for the HDX is 1280x720 (16x9 widescreen).  When the connection is slow, it drops down to 640x480 (4x3).  When this happens, it gives a beep. He can see the change in format and quality on the inset image. If he finds it annoying, he can change the default resolution to "low" in Skype settings, and it will stay in the 640x480 format.
