Problem transfering files to new computer

I am still using version 1.4.1 and upgraded my old Mac g4 to a new iMac running osx 10.5. I had the store transfer my files and programs to the new machine. I can see all the thumbnails etc and find them by keyword and so on but on the image it says "file "xyz etc" is offline or missing." A search of the hard drive shows the files are there. Is there an easy way to fix this?
Thanks,
BB

Well, you haven't provided enough details (such as in what folder were/are your files and catalog on the old/new computer, have you preserved your folder hierarchy etc.), so they might be on your hard drive, but not quite 'there'.
You can use the Locate Missing folder command on your top-level folder. This will link images in the catalog with the respective files on your drive.

  • Problem transferring Itunes to new computer

After unsuccessfully trying to use MA to move all of our files from our old G4 to a new Intel MacBookPro (our computers kept freezing up 1/2 way through, I've since read that this isn't the best way to do it) We then tried transferring everything manually via firewire cable and target disk mode but not using MA. This seemed to be working until we got to iTunes. We followed the instructions posted here, Consolidating the library, moving the iTunes music folder and putting it in the exact location on the new computer. Everytime it would seem to be working but after 4.28 g's it would just stop and freeze up. We have about 15 g's to transfer. I keep looking through all these posts trying to see if we missed something but it sure seems we were doing everything correct. We then tried using our iPod as an external drive by enabling disk mode but kept getting a message that there wasn't enough space on the iPod (even though there was) I have since read that even a 20G iPod can't hold more than 4G's in disk mode. Any advice on how to get our 15G of music and movies from the old G4 to the new computer would be appreciated. I don't have an external drive, but would consider buying one if I thought it would help. I'm just afraid I will run into the same problem trying to move it to an ED.

Thanks - but I discovered that my new itunes folder wasn't empty after all, in fact it was full of files that were invisible (not showing in the music folder) from my failed previous attempt. I dragged it to Trash (though didn't empy it), and dragged the properly organized folder from the external drive into the same place at users/username/music. A dialog box immediately came up and I selected "Replace all", which I hope has overwritten all the old data that may be hanging around. At least the music folder now has all the right files in it and the library file is the same. But will this have linked everything properly? Can I just open iTunes now?

  • Problem transferring music to new computer

i just bought a new laptop after my old one crashed. i have been following apple's instructions in the article "how to use your ipod to move music to a new computer." i am able to do all of this except when i get to the step which says to open up the ipod and drag the itunes folder to the my music folder. my problem is that i do not see the itunes folder when i open up my ipod. if anyone can help me and give me any insight on what i can do to find that folder or to finish this process i would greatly appreciate it! thanks so much!

See this migrate iTunes library post for the steps I normally recommend. It may be easier to redo the transfer if the library still works on the original machine.
Otherwise are you certain that all the media was copied across? I have tools and suggestions that can relink the media files if they have been put into the wrong layout as long as there is still a degree of structure, but if they are nowhere to be found then they can't help.
The locate button doesn't necessarily start you in the right place to look for a missing track. If it were that easy iTunes ought not to need your help at all.

  • Transferring files into new computer

I have a new MBP on order. Upon arrival, I would like to copy my "Safari" bookmarks & "RSS" feeds, and my "iTunes" podcasts into the new computer. I use an external backup, so I can copy these files (settings) onto the drive, then on to the new laptop once it arrives.
Does anyone know where these files (settings) reside?
    Thank you in advance.

safari bookmarks are kept in the bookmarks.plist. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301239 as far as the podcasts go, are they stored in your itunes library?? if so, it is easiest to use an ipod to transfer them. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173

  • Problem transferring files from PC to MP3 pla

I recently have had problems transferring music from my computer to my Zen Touch.
I am using firmware version .0.03 Zen Touch and version 2.02.05 of Creative MediaSource Organizer. I have been able to transfer files perfectly fine for years up until a few days ago. When attempting to transfer an album, I get the following two error messages:
"Error: unable to download file. This file format is invalid."
"Error: There is not enough disk space at the destination for this
    transfer."
The first error baffles me. Every file is in mp3 format and plays fine on my computer. I have no explanation as to why I am getting this error except that my Zen Touch is dieing. :-(
I have figured out the reason for the second error but I have absolutely no clue why it happens. When transferring the mp3s, the album folder grows to a ridiculous size. A 90 MB folder got changed to 9.23 GB!!!! Half of the songs on the album became -2 GBs each while the other half remained normal and completely unchanged. The songs that were greatly increased in file size still played fine on my PC however there would be 000s of minutes of static following the song.
The music already on my mp3 player still plays fine. The only problems I have been having is with the transferring of new music to the player.
So, I'm hoping someone has experienced this issue and has been able to fix it.
    Thanks.

Can anyone help me with this or should I just give up on my Zen Touch?

  • Transferring CS3 to new computer and upgrading to CS6

I am wanting to transfer my Adobe CS3 suite to my new Macbook Pro. I'm worried about not being able to access my design files correctly once transferring to my new computer. I'm also interested in upgrading to the latest CS6. Any advice would be appreciated!

To install your CS3 Suite, don't try to copy the application files. If possible, use the installer discs or a copy of the installer file you original used to install on your old computer. If you don't have the original discs/installer file, you can download the installer here:
    Other downloads
Deactivate CS3 on your old computer.
As to buying the latest CS6, you can do that from the Adobe Store.

Will my whole itunes library be transferred to my new computer with home sharing,in other words will I be able to use bothe computers at the same time ? And will I have two copies of my all my playlists?

    Hi there J1750oe,
You may find the information in the article below helpful.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4527
    Transferring playlists
If you want not only your content but also your playlists to exist on your new computer, you will want to transfer a copy of all your playlists from your old computer. To do this, choose File > Library > Export Library on your old computer. Save the XML file that is created to your desktop.
Send the playlists file to yourself as an e-mail attachment, use an external drive, or use file sharing to move the playlists file to your new computer. Once the file is on your new computer, open iTunes and choose File > Library > Import Playlist. The import process will remove any items from the playlists that you didn't share via Home Sharing.

  • I Have a Ipod Classic that all my music is on. After my previous computer crashed I have not had any of my music able to be transfered to the new computer from the Ipod. Is there a way to do this

I Have a Ipod Classic that all my music is on.
After my previous computer crashed I have not had any of my music able to be transfered to the new computer from the Ipod.
Is there a way to do this?

Unfortunately, unless you have a backup and can restore the iTunes library to the new computer, you are stuck with the current state of the iPod. This is one of those things that makes doing backups so important.
Unless your music is all purchased from iTunes (not from your own CD's that you imported into iTunes and then downloaded to the iPod), you will be able to re-download all your iTunes store music back to the iPod when you install iTunes on the new computer. When you first attach the iPod to the new computer and new iTunes the first time it will tell you that this iPod is synced with another iTunes library and let you initialize the iPod (which will erase everything on the iPod - so don't do this unless you don't care about the stuff on the iPod now).
I've seen 3rd party apps in the past that will let you copy music/content from iPod to computer and bypass iTunes, but not sure if they still exist as this was several years ago.
    good luck

  • I have problems transferring files from PC to Mac and from Mac to Mac

I have problems transferring files from PC to Mac, and from Mac to Mac.  PC to PC is fine.  Nothing but problems with the Mac.  One example:
While working on my PC, I open shared folders on an external HDD connected to the Mac.  I click on paste to move the files.  I get an error after a few seconds to a minute of trying to move several files from my PC Win 7 to Mac OS Maverick, that there is a file already at the destination on Mac. This statement is true, but it was just put there because I am copying them over in that same action.  It reads 0Kb and wasn't there before I started.  Then I get an error: The Action Cannot be completed because the folder is open in another program.  Close the folder or file and try again..
Whether I click on it a bunch right of way or wait, it still takes about 45 seconds. I have to do it with every file and it only happens when copying from a PC to Mac.  I have even restarted both computers so nothing is using any files.  If I copy one file at a time, I don't get any error.
So I have one file to move, no problem.  If move 5 files, The first will go fine, but it shows all 5 files in folder at once.  All other files than the first show 0kb. I get the file already existing error once it starts the second file transfer, and I select move and replace.  Then I get The Action Cannot be completed because the folder is open in another program.  I wait or click repeatedly until it starts to move file.  That file will then show something other than 0kb.  When it is done, the error process starts all over.  I tried checking the PC with unlocker, but the files do not show themselves locked on the PC.

Its not only French. Even certain characters in English will come across as gobblydegook from 1 platform to another. I see this in emails that likely were composed in Word & the characters don't come across.
Not sure if this is still true, but years ago someone explained that there is a standard character set & then I think its extended characters & those vary from platform to platform or language to language, etc.

  • My iTunes library is on an old computer. Not enough memory to consolidate the associated MP3 files. Transferred library to new computer. How can I add the MP3's without having to re load every file / folder again? Thanks.

Hello, I'm trying to transfer my iTunes library from an old computer with small hard drive to a new windows 8 laptop.  Much of my library consists of links to MP3/ 4 files etc but there isn't enough harddrive memory to consolidate the files into iTunes music folder.  I downloaded the library onto an external hardrive and have installed it on the new computer.  All files that were in iTunes music (now iTunes Media file) work fine.  I have transferred over all my MP3 files but of course iTunes library wont play the file as there is no established link to the file and it asks whether iTunes should locate the file. I don't want to have to import every MP3 file/ folder all over again and then delete the unlinked entries in iTunes as this will take way too much time.  Is there a way to sync all of these MP3 files to iTunes automatically or do I need to go back to start and somehow try and put the library back onto the hard drive and get the files consolidated to that from my old computer?  Any help most gratefully recieved. Thanks.

The files that weren't inside the media folder on the original machine need to be copied over to exactly the same paths as they had on the source machine. See this thread for an ongoing discussion of a similar problem. See also this post on migrating the iTunes library.

  • Transferring Files from Old Computer to New Computer

I upgraded my iTunes to 9.1.1 on my old computer (and new computer). On the old computer, I have everything organized in playlists. When I transferred all my music from my old computer to my new computer (via ipod), my playlists do not show up. All the songs are in Music on the top of iTunes. Is there anyway to transfer the itunes exactly as it appears on my old computer to my new computer? Would a USB transfer cable take care of this problem? Please help

    Hi there,
what you did is only transfer all of the MEDIA files into your new computer's iTunes. There is no problem with doing this, but all the media files include are well, the media obviously, and the tagging info (which displays name/artist/album/etc.) If all you do is move the media files onto the new computer and load iTunes, a new copy of iTunes (with no playlists/ratings/play counts and new settings) will load up, and put your content in it.
If you wish to preserve your playlists/ratings/etc, you need to import the iTunes Library File as well. This is by default located in your iTunes directory. So instead of just moving everything from "iTunes Media" (default location), it is best to move the ENTIRE "iTunes" folder, with the Library file and your media files.
However, one trick may still work. If you transfer JUST the Library file over (iTunes Library.itl), transfer it to your new computer, REPLACE the current iTunes Library file with the old one (so delete the new one, put the old one there). Open iTunes while holding SHIFT down the whole time, until a screen pops up asking you to find a library. Select choose library, and go to the location of the Library file we just moved. Select it, and if all goes well your playlists should be there!
You might come across one issue however, and that is if you changed the relative location of your media files. For example if you USED to have it on an external drive "my Music" and now it is on the internal drive in a folder labeled "iTunes Music", the computer may not be able to find your songs because it is looking in the wrong place. If that happens, and you are willing to lose your play counts and ratings, it actually might be more of a time saver to start over again and make your playlists from scratch.

  • Transferring iTunes to new computer... '?' in file names aborts copy?

    Hello,
I've been trying to copy my iTunes library from my old computer (a very slow eMac G4/700 running OS X 10.3.9) to a new one. I've been following the directions as shown here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173#next
and the problem I seem to be having is that some of the songs have illegal characters such as '?' in the file names. Doesn't seem to bother iTunes when it comes to playing them, but OS X balks at copying said file, and aborts the whole copy process... and I have to go in and edit the file name, then start the copy all over again. Needless to say, it's more than slightly annoying by now.
Are the modified file names going to cause a problem when I try to play the songs on the new computer? Is there an app that does batch file-name conversions just for this? I know there are a lot of apps that do file-name conversions... once the user gets all fluent in all the switches and options and whatnot, which seems like a wee bit of overkill if I can find something that just fixes them quick-like... I can't be the first person to have had this problem?
    Thanks,
    Monte

I don't know of a quick fix. I have had the same problem and from the iTunes main window have edited the id3 tags to remove the offending characters. If you use the 'keep' option enabled then iTunes will rename the file on the HD to match the info in the 'name' column of iTunes.
You can check Dougs Scripts at http://www.dougscripts.com/itunes/index.php and see if there is a script that can do the work for you.
Now I make sure there are no offending characters in the song names.
