Problem transfering pics to external hard drive

When I copy my pics in iPhoto 6 and then try to drag to a new folder on my external hard drive, often, I get the message "the selected items cannot be all put in the same location because at least one of them named DSC-0002.JPG is busy"
What do I need to do?
Thanks!

Do you mean export to a folder on your HD? If so, it's probably arising because of the naming convention of your camera and there are two files with the same name being exported. Solution is to select the pics in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and use one of the naming options, which should prevent the issue arising. The continue the export to the folder.

  • Problems transfering music from external hard drive to ipod.

When I plug both ipod and external hard driver (WD 1600B014) into my Gateway laptop, only 1 device will work at a time with the other saying "usb device not recognised". This means I am unable to copy selected itunes songs onto my ipod.
This is driving me insane as I have 60gb of music on my hard drive which I want to chop and change frequently.
I have tried all manner of solutions including buying a powered usb hub (belkin) and starting a clean sheet with my laptop, installing all manner of new drivers for the usb ports.
I have the same problem with my 5G ipod 40gb.
I have tried the same problem on my dads desktop computer and the same problem arrises.
Does anyone have any answers as this has been driving me mad for ages and ages.
Is this a common thing or is it a problem with Western digital hard drives (although i thought they were a pretty big brand).
Any help would really be appreciated.

if I want to copy all those song files onto my iPod, they have to be copied into itunes first, and there's not nearly enough space on my desktop for that.
No, you don't have to copy the tracks to your internal hard drive. Just turn off the "copy music to iTunes Music Folder when adding" option in the iTunes Advanced preferences. Then use the "Add To Library" menu command and select the appropriate folder(s) on your external drive. iTunes will add the tracks to the Library but not move them to the internal drive.
Once that's done, use iTunes to transfer the music to the iPod. You can then, if iTunes is set for manual synchronization, remove the tracks from the Library if you want to remove the reference to the external drive.

  • Trouble opening iPhoto library in Aperture that has been transferred to an external hard drive.

I am having trouble opening my iPhoto library in Aperture now that it has been transferred to an external hard drive.
    Versions being used:
    MacBook Pro 13-inch mid-2010
    OS X v. 10.9.1 Mavericks
    Aperture v. 3.5.1
    iPhoto v. 9.5.1
Order of events: got MacBook > took pictures > created an iPhoto library > upgraded to Mountain Loin > added more photos to iPhoto library > upgraded to Mavericks > purchased and downloaded Aperture > copied iPhoto library to a 750 GB WD My Passport.
When attempting to switch to this iPhoto library while using Aperture an error stating, “Unable to Switch to Library. Aperture cannot switch to the selected library because the file system of the library’s volume is not supported.”  iPhoto can access this iPhoto library with no problem.  What is missing? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

“Unable to Switch to Library. Aperture cannot switch to the selected library because the file system of the library’s volume is not supported.”
Aperture 3.5.1  is checking for file system compatibility, iPhoto not always.
copied iPhoto library to a 750 GB WD My Passport.
Check the filesystem on your WD drive. Did you remember to format the drive for MacOS, before you copied the library there? It needs to be formatted MacOS X Extended (Journaled) to be used with any photo library. iPhoto may be able to open the library, if the filesystem is not supported, but you are risking data loss.
You can reformat the drive with Disk Utility, if the file system is wrong (after backing up your iPhoto library to a different drive). See:
    iPhoto: Issues with FAT32-formatted drives
Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture

  • Transferring data from external hard drive to new replacement Macbook Pro...

    Hello,
Apple have arranged to give me a replacement Macbook Pro due to faults with hardware on the one I am currently using. I will be going to pick up the replacement Macbook Pro tomorrow morning.
As a complete novice I just wanted to check that I have backed up the data from my current laptop onto my Iomega external hard drive properly, as I am slightly nervous about losing all my work and not being able to transfer all my files onto my new Macbook Pro tomorrow.
I did a back up using time machine earlier today which took quite a long time and seemed to go successfully. Is this the right thing to have done to save all data from my current laptop onto the external hard drive?
Will transferring data from the external hard drive onto my new Macbook Pro be a simple task?
Will I have to reinstall all my software such as Logic and Pro Tools? Also will my preferences and settings for music software be changed?
    I'd greatly appreciate any advice.
    Thanks,
    Deena

    Well it's like this.
If your problem on the Mac didn't affect the software or the TimeMachine backup, then restoring from that using SetupAssistant (when you first set up a new Mac it will ask you to restore) should go fine.
HOWEVER, if there are software issues on the Mac that also transferred to the TimeMachine drive, that will only transfer them back onto your new computer.
You can't very easily just pick out the things you want to restore from TimeMachine with, it doesn't give that fine detail of control, and if it's really messed up, it might not restore anything at all.
The golden rule of backups is to maintain two separate and easily accessible hardware copies of your data off the machine at all times.
Since you don't know for sure if the TimeMachine restore is going to work as intended, and your only other source is going to disappear, I'd advise a additional backup of your Music, Documents, Pictures and Movie folders etc., to another regular external drive via regular drag and drop copy methods.
The operating system and programs can all be reinstalled from fresh sources on the new machine, provided you have the AppleID and password, license codes for your programs, email passwords and any other necessary information to re-establish the license on the new machine.
(In some cases licensed software HAS NOT transferred to a new machine with a TimeMachine restore and had to be reinstalled)
Some times you have to contact the developer or "uninstall" the licensed program so it sends a signal to their servers that the program has been removed, else your license code may not work on the new machine.
You might decide the new machine would be better off with a fresh install of your programs that you know are 100% compatible with Lion etc., leaving a lot of older stuff you installed over the years off the new machine, if you restore from TimeMachine, you don't have this option. You pretty much get all the crap along for the ride,
If your new machine gets all crapped up, then restoring Lion is going to going to be a tough challenge, as you need a strong reliable Internet connection to download a fresh copy of Lion from Apple servers (no more disks). Once you do that, then somehow you have to use third party software ($$) to cherry pick your files out of TimeMachines trap. More headaches than you anticpated, and likely a charge by a specialist.
So I'd advise another hard drive with a copy of just your files, just in case a crap-up occurs
You can restore Lion yourself if it craps up, install programs from fresh sources as you know how to do, use the old license codes and then return your files manually exactly back into their same Music, Pictures, Documents, and Movies (etc, not Library) folders as before.
The key to this manual method is to make sure to use the same user name as before, so all your file location data pathnames retained by program files like iTunes to where the songs are located on the drive, are matched. Once you open these programs and restablish the links in OS X, then you can move them around.
Some tricks, if you use iPhoto, you can right click "show package contents" and inside is a folder with your Originals, copy that out and you can reimport your pictures into the new iPhoto Library on the new machine.
So use TM if you dare, but prepared to do things manually is my opinion.
TM restores have not been all that reliable or dependable, the more messed up your machine is, the worst the restore seems to be.
    Good Luck

  • Problem running Itunes from external hard drive- Please Help!

So, last night I transferred my entire music folder over to an external hard drive. It copied all the files and I then proceeded to tell itunes where my new music folder was located. The problem I ran into was when I actually deleted the music files from my internal hard drive my library won't automatically find the files. When I click on a song it comes up with an error message saying, "original file cannot be found, would you like to locate file?". If I tell it yes, I can then manually tell it where the file is, and it will play. I'm really hoping there is an easier way around this issue because going in and doing this for every song in my library would take years. Should I clear out the library and then drag it from the external hard drive? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.
    Sean

I am experiencing a similar problem. I already had all my files on an external drive, where I had transfered them a few months back, and everything was working fine. I have now moved them, again, to a larger external drive, did everything the same, but now receive the message "original file cannot be found, would you like to locate file?" I was advised to use the "add to library" button under "FILE" in the menu bar and all the music was finally imported into iTunes, but the problem now is that the new data on the music files is missing all the metadata, and I am still stuck with all the original files with the "!" in front of each file that is going to have to be manually deleted one file at a time, all 30,000 of them. I would like a way to start over and get it right the first time. Anyone have any solutions? I have found a program, "Super Remove Dead Tracks" which should solve the problem of eliminating the "!" tracks, but so too all the metadata. Ideally I'd like to be able to locate the original files with all the attached metadata and get back to where I was 24 hours ago.

  • New mac user, need help transferring music from external hard drive

I am new to using a mac. I have had an iphone for almost a year so I am catching on quickly to my macbook but this problem has stumped me and all my mac using friends.
I have a 500gb seagate external hard drive aswell as a new 500gb seagate internal.
I transferred all my music from an old ipod onto the external hard drive. There is about 50gb of music.
When I plug my external into my pc desktop I can see the music folder organized into subfolders with files inside that are encoded unless they are opened in itunes. My pc doesn't have enough internal memory to open and store my music library so I have just left it on the hard drive. When I plug the hard drive into my macbook it will show the music folder as having 50gb but when the folder is opened, none of the subfolders or files are visable.
I went ahead and dragged the folder from my harddrive onto my desktop. It took about an hour to transfer all the files but now the folder is sitting on my desktop and when I open it, it is empty. If i look in the folders info, it says it has the 50gb. If i try to drag and drop it into itunes nothing happens. If I drag and drop it into the itunes music folder, it will go there but will not show up on itunes.
I'm stumped and no longer eligable for apples telephone support as I bought this macbook from a friend. Any help would be greatly appreciated

  • Help!  Can't copy iPhoto pics to external hard drive anymore

All of a sudden, I can no longer drag pics from iPhoto to my external hard drive.  I've done this with no problem for at least six months, and now, can't do it.  The hard drive is a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1.5 TB.  It has a 3.0 USB cord.  No issues up until now.  I can still drag music to the external with no issues, but fro some reason, not photos.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The interesting thing is that for the first year I have had the external hard drive, this was my routine:
    1. Have iPhoto and External Hard Drive both open
    2. Create and name folder on EHD
    3. Put cursor on folder of pics on iPhoto I wanted to copy
    4. Click, hold, drag, and drop in folder
    5. Copying automatically starts and finishes
Now, in order to copy, I have to open the particular folder on iPhoto, select all, copy all, then go to the EHD folder and select paste.
This isn't much more, but I guess I'm wondering what happenend on my EHD or iPhoto to make the "drag and drop" inaccessible all of a sudden?

  • Screen sometimes freezes when transferring to/from external hard drive

I have a brand-new macbook pro 15" (standard settings). Ever since I've taken it out of the box it's been having this intermittent problem where the screen freezes. The first time it happened was when I was migrating my files from my time machine backup. I didn't make much of it then but it has kept happening for the last 3 weeks or so since I got the computer.
When it happens I can still move the cursor around the screen but nothing responds. I can't close or quit anything, or even force quit. The only thing that works is to restart the computer using the power button. This has led to me losing work on more than one occasion (VERY frustrating). I've tried leaving it for a while to see if it eventually 'wakes up'. It doesn't. I've checked the hard drive and other hardware and haven't found any errors. I've installed all software updates.
All I've figured out is that this seems to happen when I'm transferring large amounts of data to or from an external hard drive. It happens with several different drives, which work fine on other computers, so it's not just the case of one malfunctioning external hard drive. It doesn't happen consistently either - sometimes transferring the same info later on works fine.
Has anyone had similar problems and/or (even better) found a solution? I'm planning to ring apple support once they're open and will update this if I find out anything else.

    Tia,
Songs transfer to the iPod form iTunes. iTunes can obtain the song files from any location: main HD, secondary HD, ExHD.
You need to get the song files on the ExHD recognized by iTunes. Then you just need to sync the iPod to iTunes.
This is the high-level explanation. If you need more info, read the links below and/or post back.

  • Setup problem importing library from external hard drive

my old iMac died, and I am setting up iPhoto on my new iMac (10.7.2).  I had backed up my iPhoto library to an external hard drive before the old iMac went kaput.  However, when I try to import this library when setting up iPhoto, the Library file itself is inhibited / not selectable.
I also tried copying the Library to my Pictures folder on the new iMac, but that is failing (error code -36) about a third of the way through.  That incomplete file, also, is inhibited.
appreciate any suggestions on how to confront this problem.  thanks.

    Thanks, Terence.
When I held down the command/option keys, it prompted me to select a Library.  This time, I chose the Library resident on the EHD.  iPhoto then indicated it needed to run an upgrade in order to render the library (paraphrasing - I should've written down what it said).  That took about 20 minutes, and then it proceeded to import.  I could see all of my Events, and everything appeared to be good to go.  My plan was going to be to then figure out a way to get the photos individually backed up and then monkey with it some more until I could have the Library resident on the Mac HD and backed up on the EHD.
However, before I got that far, I noted that many of my Events were empty.  I would see a thumbnail image for it, but clicking in it would indicate that there were zero photos in that Event.  I'm flummoxed.
Right now, I am individually exporting the files to newly created sub-folder within Pictures so that I at least have a copy of everything on the new iMac, but that is failing about a third of the way through and yielding an error indicating that the files cannot be copied to users/....  Further, I'm not exactly sure what to make of the empty Events issue.  I read another thread on this that says to close and re-launch iPhoto with Command/Option held down and run the repairs, but someone had written that their empty events vanished when they closed the application.  Should I proceed?
    Thanks again to you both.

  • IMovie -Problem restoring events after external hard drive failed.

iMovie 09 – The external hard drive failed where I stored my 2012 events.  I do not have a backup copy of these events. I bought a new external drive and named it exactly the same as the old drive. Then I uploaded archived original video clips to it recreating the events.  I used the exact same event names.  However when I view the projects I made from the original events, I get “this clip’s media file is not currently available”. The file path I created should be the same as the old, so why does the project not recognize the recreated events?  Any suggestions what I could try?
If I were able to retrieve and copy the old events from the failed drive to the new drive, would that work?
Has anyone successfully dealt with this problem?

That's a very interesting scenario that you've described. I've been concerned about a potential situation arising where I may need to restore Events from a backup drive. However, your situation is somewhat different in that you've had to re-import the Events to a new drive from an archive.
My main video drive is a Maxtor One Touch III Turbo comprising two 500GB drives set up as a RAID 0. So, effectively it appears as one drive totalling 1TB, with data being written to both drives simultaneously (but not mirrored). However, if one drive fails, the other becomes ineffective as it contains only partial data about imported clips (the remaining data being on the failed drive).
I backup the Maxtor to a portable 1TB drive by cloning it using SuperDuper. My thinking has been that, if the Maxtor fails then a simple rename of the backup drive to the same name as the Maxtor is all that will be required for iMovie to retain the linkages between Events and Projects. I hope this is the case!
I hope you get a solution to your predicament - sorry I can't offer any useful advice!

  • Transferred songs to external hard drive, now iTunes can not locate files??

I transferred all my song files using various tutorials on the site, I consolidated my library, etc. The external harddrive was referred to as "F:" when I did this.
Later when I downloaded a few podcasts with my external HD disconnected, they were stored on my c: harddrive. At that point I had iTunes files on both my C: drive and F: drive (with the F: drive being disconnected at the time).
Now my external harddrive when connected is referred to as "G:" by my pc, and iTunes could not find any of my songs previously transferred to F:. I went to preferences/advanced again and selected G:/iTunes as my new folder location, and now only SOME of my songs are located by iTunes, not all. I'm completely confused.
    Any advice? Thanks.
    Completely frustrated,
    Andy
      Windows XP

Just a refining comment: iTunes recognizes some, but not all, songs that were transferred to the new hard drive, following iTune's instructions to change the directory then consolidate the library.
I am baffled why iTunes recognizes some songs, but not others, within the same folder....
The easy solution would be to use "import folder" and re-import the entire iTunes files on my harddrive, and then delete the duplicates, which would include the ones non-findable by iTunes. But then my playlists would be affected. I guess I'd have to re-build my playlists manually, using the new imported files in place of the files that iTunes can't recognize, prior to deleting all the duplicate non-findable files.
Argh, I hate pc's...thru & thru...any suggestions before I spend a few hours re-building my playlists and deleting the non-findable song files??
    Thanks...

  • Itunes doesn't sync music that was transferred from an external hard drive

I transferred a song from an external hard drive onto itunes on my laptop. The song plays through itunes on my laptop after I've disconnected the external hard drive, but it won't sync the song to my iPhone. I have a lot of music on that ext. HD and I'd like to listen to it on my iPhone.

    Hi, Alex 58.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Try opening iTunes with the external drive connected and sync the music over to the iPhone.  If all media is located on the external drive, iTunes will not sync the requested media to the device without the drive connected.  You may need to remove the sync music preference and reapply it for the media to transfer.

  • I can not get my imovie clips transferred to my external hard drive. I did it before but I don't remember how I did it. I tried dragging it and I tried moving it under the share tab too. Help!

I have a Mac 10.8.2 and iMovie 08. I have uploaded movie's from my video camera onto iMovie, and now I cannot move them to my external hard drive. I was able to do this before, but I don't remember how I did it. I tried to drag it and I tried moving it by using the share tab.
Any information on how I can go about transferring from iMovie to my external hard drive would be helpful.
                                                                     AND
Any information on how I can transfer movies and pictures from my camera directly to my external hard drive would be helpful as well.
    Thank You!

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

  • Photos not showing up in iMovie project after transferring project to external hard drive

I just finished moving my iMovie '11 projects and events to an external hard drive.  In one particular project (the only one I've used photos in), the photos will not play back when I watch it in the preview window.  The picture shows up in the project editing window, but during playback the computer seems to use the last frame of the last played video.  All of the previous settings are the same, it will just not show the pictures.  I've tried re-inserting them, even trying different pictures that were not used originally, but nothing seems to work.  I've also tried closing iMovie and restarting it, but no luck.

    Hi all
I am having the same problem - all a bit wierd.  Yesterday I could drag and drop images from finder into my project.  Today, I can drag andf drop the images from finder and they display in the project - but not when it is played.
I tried importing the images into iphoto and dragging them from the media selection window - still no joy - I can see them in the proejct - but they just don't show when played.
Is it because the project has been marked as finished in some way - although I haven't finalised it?
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Premier Pro Project: Created on one External Hard Drive, Transferred to Different External Hard Drive, Project Will Not Open

Here is my problem listed in simple steps:
I created a project in Premier a couple years ago on a G-Raid mini external hard drive.
I backed up my project folder on a LaCie external hard drive.
The G-Raid mini hard drive died.
I cannot open my project from the LaCie drive.
When I attempt to open my project, I get 2 error messages:
First:  "The scratch disks are write protected or unavailable. To open this project, the scratch disks will be set to your documents folder. Would you like to continue?"
    I say "Yes"
Second: "This project contained a sequence that could not be opened. No sequence preview preset file or codec could be associated with this sequence type."
I say "OK", and that's the end.
My understanding is that the problem has to do with the fact that my original scratch disks were created on the G-Raid mini hard drive, and that Premier will not open my project because the code for my .prproj file directs Premier to a hard drive that is not connected.  I have tried to edit the code in TextEdit, replacing the name of the old hard drive with the new one where the code reads:
    <project.settings.lastknowngoodprojectpath>
This did not work.  I also tried changing the name of my new hard drive to match what the "lastknowngoodprojectpath" reads as in the code, but that did not work either.  I have searched high and low on the internet for someone who approaches the types of error messages I receive from the perspective of trying to open the project from a different hard drive, but I cannot find anyone who is specifically giving advice about this.  Any suggestions?

I doubt that the error concerning the sequence preview preset file or codec has anything to do with the scratch disc location.
