Problem transferring keychain access to new iMac

just bought a new iMac, but am having problems with keychain access which has not automatically transferred with Migratiin Assistant.
can anyon help please? My old computer is also an iMac.

Are you really using 10.4.9? 'Apple Menu > About this Mac' should tell you the correct OS X version number.
The keychain is stored inside your home 'library'
On your old Mac or old backup find the /Users/YOUR-OLD-USERNAME/Library/Keychains folder. This may be hidden! You will need to use the Finders 'Go Menu > Go to Folder…' to open the library within that folder. Just drop the old home folder into that field to complete the path and add /Library to the end of it.
Double click that file & it should import that into the Keychain Access database.
Eject the backup & double check that you can still read items in the old keychain. It should copy it into the new library - but I cannot recall if 10.4 behaved the same way.

  • Problems with transferring iTunes Library to new iMac

I am having a problem with transferring my iTunes library to my new iMac. I have read many of the suggestions posted in this forum along with numerous articles on other sites. I have not seen anyone describe my exact problem.
When I got my new iMac, I used Migration Assistant to transfer everything (files, applications, settings, etc.) from my old iMac to the new iMac. On my old iMac, the iTunes music folder (i.e., the actual mp3s) are on an external HD, while the iTunes Library file (the database and xml files) were in the /user/Music/ folder on the old iMac.
After the Migration Assistant was done, the /user/music/ folder and the library files were copied to the new iMac, but the iTunes music folder was not. It is still on the external HD.
If I open iTunes on the new iMac, iTunes shows me all of my songs, but if I play one, I get the "song can't be found; do you want to find it" error. In iTunes preferences on the new iMac, the "iTunes music folder location" is the new iMac.
I have the 2 iMacs connected by a firewire cable, but neither iMac recognizes the other computer as being on the same network. That is, in Finder on the new iMac, I cannot see the external HD of the old iMac.
I can't change the library location on the old iMac, because the new iMac does not appear in Finder or in the "Change Music Folder Location" dialog box.
I want to move the music folder (the actual mp3s) from the external HD of the old iMac to the INTERNAL HD of the new iMac. I don't need to keep them on the old IMac, as I will be selling that computer. Of course, I want to keep all my playlists, artwork, etc from the old library.
    Does anyone have a suggestion?
    Thanks.

Never mind. Figured it out. I attached external HD to new iMac and consolidated. Duh.

  • What I Learned About Transferring Stuff To A New iMac

Just got the new 21.5" iMac with Fusion drive.  First time that I ever attempted transferring from the old to the new.  I wanted my excel/word docs and photos in particular to transfer.  That was my main goal anyhow.  But on the prompts from the new computer I transferred the whole shebang, not exactly knowing what the whole shebang would be....the only broad categories given by the system at the time were Users, Settings, Documents, and I think one more thing I cannot recall.  Had the option to check or uncheck the four boxes, they were pre-checked by apple, I assumed this was the common thing to do so I just did it.
I was going to use Numbers this time on this computer and avoid having Microsoft Office for Mac on the computer and all of its trash program...well...all that transferred over....so now Excel 2008 works, which is a good thing, but I  know I have the undesirable files loaded too...not happy with that but it is what it is.
Makes me wonder what other things were on old computer I could have lived without on new....on a side note, right after the computer sprung to life and said it was ready to go it gave me a message the Flipmac4 was not the right version or something.  Not sure how much it is needed or if it is outdated.  I think it has something to do with watching videos.  Perhaps I can uninstall it permanently and still watch Youtube and other vids.  Anyone know about this please pitch in.
It is nice to have all the photos and documents transfer over seemlessly like they did I just wish there was a way to be more selective in the process maybe I would have nixed Microsoft Office for Mac and other thing...I dunno....not really complaining just expressing what I have learned today....Please respond with things I might have done better if you know of anything so next time, maybe another three years from now ha ha, I can be better at it....
    THANKS ALL!
PS, even the passords for the internet apparently transferred....like when I went to sign on the apple communities the user ID and password were already pre-filled with my data.

I would first go through Setup Assistant (which opens automatically) without migrating anything. Run Software Update to install the latest updates from Apple, but otherwise use the iMac +as is+ for a while. When you are satisfied that it is working 100% perfectly, you can run Migration Assistant from Applications/Utilities/. This way, if you have a problem, it will be easier to troubleshoot.
Note: Since this is a refurb iMac, it is possible that it will have Leopard pre-installed instead of Snow Leopard. It should come with a disc for upgrading to Snow Leopard, if Leopard is pre-installed. If that is the case with this refurb, you should upgrade to Snow Leopard and test run it for a while before migrating the user data from the G5.
In Migration Assistant, you will be asked to select the data source. You can connect the two Mac, but you can also use that external drive with the clone. If that external drive is FireWire 400, you will need a cable that goes from FireWire 800 (9-pin) to FireWire 400 (6-pin), for example
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/1394B96036/
because the new iMac will only have FireWire 800 (if it's the early 2009 model). If the drive has USB 2.0, you can connect it that way to the new iMac. The option in Migration Assistant is +From Time Machine backup or other disk+. The external drive clone is the "other disk."
Then, Migration Assistant will ask what to migrate. Here, you should select to migrate only Users. Do not select +Applications, Settings, or Other...+ This will migrate user data from the old installation and leave everything else alone.
That is the easiest way. You can also connect the external drive clone and use Finder to copy the files over manually. That's the way I usually do it myself, so that I have more control over what gets transferred.

  • Major Problem with kernel panic on new iMac: HELP!

My housemates 24" core 2 duo imac kernel panicked when playing Call of duty 2 (side question: if anyone has any reason why it keeps freezing and the screen getting full of horizontal lines would love to hear from you)
Now I can not start the computer. Whenever I restart, it plays the chime, but then has another kernel panic. Spoke to apple.. i reset the pram.. and then it came back.. ive zero data deleted my hardrive then re-installed osx.. and it is still doing it!! (i ran hardware tests and said everything was working fine..)
The graphics card is nvidia 7600GT
Also.. When starting up the imac, just after the apple logo white screen turns to the desktop, the screen flashes a lime green for a split second.. i know that shouldnt happen!
It wont let me send a report to apple wen i get a window saying "imac shut down unexpectantly".. when the button clicks.. no report comes up.
The operating is a 24" 2.16 Ghz iMac intel 2 core duo, 1GB RAM!
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.
    Cheers.

I had the same problems. New iMac 24" arrived last week (a replacement because the first one had a faulty screen and keyboard). Set it up at the weekend and it seemed fine for 48 hours until I started watching a DVD on Christmas Day. About 2 minutes into the DVD I got a kernel panic, then the computer would not restart. I left it about an hour and tried again. It started successfully, but had another kernel panic when I opened the Dashboard. Again, it failed to restart. I think that something is overheating whenever the computer tries to do any 'work' and then it crashes. I too got panics when trying to boot from the installation disc. Spoke to customer support over the phone and nothing we tried worked, so I've had to send back for another replacement system.

  • DVD drive problems : should I buy the new iMac ?

Hello, being new to these discussions, I don't know if this question was answered before.
My last iMac's DVD drive stopped working after 3 years use. And from reading the discussions, this problem seemed quite common.
But 3 years is not bad, considering the posts talking about the DVD drive not working on NEW iMacs.
Does anybody know if Apple is going to do something about this soon ? My computer is a working tool, and I cannot spend time or money on repairs all the time.
    Thank you.
    A Mac user since 1985

+"Well, since nobody has an answer, I suppose I will wait until I no longer see the DVD drive problems on the discussions."+
That might be a while. I bought my iMac Oct. 15 and the DVD drive is already not responding. Backing up files, I had burned 2 DVDs from the same package, Toast says this one is a CD-RW and unwritable, and makes a noise like it's trying to eject it but nothing happens. Disk utility says the DVD drive is empty and nothing shows up in the Finder. Using Terminal (drutil eject) and starting up with the mouse button held down makes the same noise as trying to eject it in Toast, with the same results - nothing.
Still trying to find the receipt to take it back & get it repaired. I sure miss the hole for the paper clip.

  • Problems installing Windows 7 on new iMac?

I've heard from users on other forums that there are some problems installing Windows 7 on the new iMacs, mainly that the display goes blank partway through installation due to some kind of driver issue. Can anyone confirm this or elaborate? I've heard there is a workaround but it sounds a bit complicated and I'm wondering if I should just wait until Apple patches Boot Camp with full Win7 support.

I would wait until Apple updates Boot Camp to officially support Windows 7.

  • Transferring keychain to a new computer?

I just got a new iMac, and I would like to transfer all of the passwords (stored in Keychain) from my old computer to the new one. What's the best way to do this?
    Thanks!

The Keychain's Import and Export commands are for Certificates.
To copy a keychain you should detach it first, using File. Delete Keychain Login, you will be prompted for Delete References & files, cancel, and Delete References. You want Delete References.
Copy the Keychain, to where you want it. Open Keychain.app, Edit, Keychain List Command. Add the original keychain back. Do the same on the new machine with the copied keychain.
Copying the System Keychain, will make your system unusable, unless you also copy /private/var/db/SystemKey. To check that your System Keychain is accessible in Terminal use: SystemKeychain -vt you should see:
    "Testing system unlock of /Library/Keychains/System.keychain
(If you are prompted for a passphrase, cancel)
    System unlock is working"

  • Transferring Lightroom to a new iMac

I am about to buy a new iMac desktop but I'm scared stiff about moving all my photos and Lightroom application to it. I understand that I should not use Migration assistant for the application ( I need to uninstall on old and reinstall on new) but how do I get my catalogue with all my image work, keywords, folders etc moved across, can I do this with Apple's migration assistant. Also, after I reinstall how will Lightroom on the new computer recognise the catalogue that has been transferred by a different route ?

I've also create another account with administrator permission, but nothing change!
The hd work with no problems on windows and on others imac with paragon or ntfs.

If you are still within your 15 day return period.  Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge.  (There are no realistic substitutes.)
You MUST speak to a senior advisor to get a free copy. The first tier people cannot do it.

  • Problems upgrading to SL on new iMac

I have a new iMac 24; came with Leopard. I have spent a week trying to upgrade to SL. The problem is that every time it boots after the upgrade I get only to the spinning wheel at startup (not beachball, but the gear-looking thingy) and it just hangs there permanently. (I had 10.5.8 on previous, fully updated.) I am using an upgrade DVD.
After countless hours, I have narrowed it down somewhat. I can get it to boot after a clean install, but after using the Migration assistant it once again goes into its death mode. I have narrowed down the problem to the "Applications" migration; i.e., I can install SL, migrate Users, prefs, docs, and then I can reboot under SL no problem. But if I migrate Applications, it boots with the permanent spinning wheel.
So now my goal is to figure out exactly which file(s) is causing this problem. I am looking through the log files but there are a lot of them and I'm not exactly sure where I should look. (I copied some log files via Terminal to another drive while starting up from the DVD.)
    Any ideas/suggestions? thanks

Look at these incompatibility lists: [(1)|http://snowleopard.wikidot.com>, [(2)|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3258], and [(3)|http://www.macintouch.com/specialreports/snowleopard/slcompat.html]. You may find one or more of your apps on one or more of the lists. If so, then it/they may be your problem apps, and I wouldn't install it/them. Also, at this point, I would just reinstall the apps that you decide are OK.

  • Transferring from old to new iMac computer

I am buying a new iMac to replace my 4 year old iMac. I want  want to transfer everything from my old iMac to the new one.
My question is which transfer method is best, Target disk or Time Machine?
Am not sure of exactly what happens when I connect the TM to the new computer & if this will download everything including apps.
Looking for pros & cons of each method before I start.

    Bob,
Please click the link below for a Time Machine tutorial:
    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/#timemachinebasics
Time Machine works quite well however as with any system it should be checked from time to time to guarantee everything is still working OK. Kind of like checking the oil on your car or double checking the front door is locked at night.
If you want to learn more about TM then I would also recommend looking over these TM FAQ's put together by Pondini.

  • Problem with Setup Assistant and New iMac

I just purchased a new imac intel (actually 2010 model from MacMall on closeout) and I want to transfer my files over from my old imac - 2004 G5 running 10.5.8
During the initial start up of the new imac I choose the option to transfer my information from another mac (using setup assistant).
I connect using firewire and start up the old mac in firewire mode (holding down T).  After the new mac calculates the files to tranfer I cannot chose the continue button - the button is greyed out.  In addition the remaining space available shows a negative (red number).   This also occurs if I choose to transfer from a time machine back up on an external drive.   Help.

You didn't mention what version of OS X is on the new system. I would strongly recommend starting over and using Pondini's
    Lion Setup Assistant tips
    or
    Snow Leopard Setup Assistant tips
depending on what the new system has loaded on it. If you have been using Time Machine or a bootable clone backup for the old system you can restore from that backup rather than having to mess with Target Disk mode.
If you still have difficulty call AppleCare, they're there to help on this type of issue. The number is in the owners manual.

  • 77 songs not transferred when synching to new iMac

I synched my video ipod to the newly purchased iMac after copying the library over on firewire to iTunes. I do not see a 'purchased music' file on the new iTunes. 77 songs and a purchased video did not load on the ipod. Do I need the 'purchased file' as proof for the iMac to synch? If so, anyone know where it is and how I transfer it?
    iMac 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    There is no Music folder.
Perhaps I should try to start from a clean slate again. Do you think it will make sense to wipe out all the data and re-install OSX, re-migrate? There will not be any lost data (compared to what I have now..)
When I re-installed OSX, I had to state a name. I chose the name on the previous computer, which led to a conflict when I tried to migrate. I had to choose another name for the new iMac. Could this have led to the inability to restore properly? (am I making sense?)
