Problem turning off legacy filevault.

Hey everyone,
I began the process of switching over to the new filevault, but have encountered a problem turning off the legacy vault. Everything seemed to be goin well, at first. It took about 30 minutes for copying to complete during decryption. However, it has been hung up at "copying is complete..." for nearly 12 hours now and is showing no signs of moving on. I have received no errors. What can I do to maybe kick start the process again or should I just do a forced shutdown. Any help here would be greatly appreciated because at this point I honestly don't know if I have any other option than a forced shutdown.
Thanks

Ok, so I'm answering my own question here but it worked. I ended up doing a forced shutdown (holding down the power button until shut down initializes) from the screen indicating that "copying is complete..." When I restarted (manual restart using the power button again) the legacy vault was off and the new file vault was on and working properly. No data or settings were lost and everything was working properly.
Thank you to all of you who took the time to look at my initial question even if you didn't have an answer for it.

  • Can't turn off Legacy Filevault

I have an iMac with 2 "legacy" filevault accounts from Snow Leopard.
I turned off legacy filevault on one of the two accounts, but the second account, which is a portable home directory, always generates an error during the decryption process. I have tried repairing disk permissions, rebooting etc, nothing works.
Any and all suggestions are welcome!

    - open the account (so that the Home is decrypted)
    - make a copy of Home folder
    - set a new temporary account (Admin)
    - restart with this new temporary account
    - remove the original Home folder, then remove the original account (via System Preferences - Users & Groups)
    - rename the copy with the original name
    - add a new account with the same original name via Users & Groups), that is recreated the deleted account
The system ask you if you want to use the existent Folder with the same - OK
At voila you have the account decrypted

  • Need additional space to turn off legacy FileVault?

I have a 320GB HD but the finder says I have almost 500GB of data which is impossible.  The about this mac tells me that I have 2GB free. I moved 100GB of items to the trash then emptied the trash and it still tells me I have 2GB free.  I recently upgraded to lion and when I go to deactivate legacy filevault as I am guessing that is the issue it tells me I need additional space? How can I use an external HD to fix this issue?  Can I just delete the sparsebundle that is 200GB?

Okay, I was under the impression that you had to deactivate any legacy/previous version of Filevault before you installed Lion. I don't believe that the two versions are in anyway compatible.
Do you have a backup of your prior SL volume?

  • How can I turn off legacy file vault when it needs additional 170 GB free on a HD that is only 250 GB?

I am trying to migrate to a new Macbook Pro (OSX 10.8.3) and I cannot migrate files over from my prior Macbook Pro (OSX 10.7.5) because of legacy file vault being on. When I try to turn off Legacy Filevault on old computer, it says I need to free up 170 GB of HD space. I only have a 250 GB HD to begin with! I don't see how I can possibly free up that much space. I need help!

Use a external storage drive and copy all your users files there, then Trash > Empty Trash the originals, then reboot and try Filevault again.
    Most commonly used backup methods
Note that any +4GB sized files will not transfer to a FAT32/MSDOS external drive many are formatted too.
You first need to change the format of the drive and in doing so, will erase all data on it.

  • Upgraded to Lion. Error turning off Legacy File Vault

I want to use the new file vault so homefolder files are encrypted in my time machine backup. When I was prompted in System Preferences, I chose to "turn off legacy file vault." After the passwords, etc., the system works for a while and has just returned an error message, something to the effect "an error has occured. Legacy File Vault will not be turned off." How do I get Legacy File Vault turned off (e.g, unencrypt the drive?)
    Thanks.

  • How can I turn off the FileVault?

How can I turn off the FileVault? It keeps saying 'Encryption paused', even I connected the power adapter.
What impacts does it have on my Macbook Pro if I cannot turn off the FileVault?
    Thank you!

If you don't already have a current backup of all data, back up before proceeding. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Disk Utility.
In the Disk Utility window, select the icon of the startup volume from the list on the left. It will be nested below another disk icon, usually with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar. When prompted, enter the login password of a user authorized to unlock the volume, or the alternate decryption key that was generated when you activated FileVault.
Then, from the menu bar, select
              File ▹ Turn Off Encryption
    Enter the password again.
You can then restart as usual, if the system is working. Decryption will be completed in the background. It may take several hours, and during that time performance will be reduced.
If you can't turn off encryption in Disk Utility because the menu item is grayed out, you'll have to erase the volume and then restore the data from a backup. Select the Erase tab, and then select
              Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    from the Format menu.
You can then quit to be returned to the main Recovery screen. Follow these instructions if you back up with Time Machine. If you use other backup software, follow its developer's instructions.
Don't erase the volume unless you have at least two complete, independent backups. One is not enough to be safe.

  • Problem turning off Filevault

    Hi,
I am trying to turn off Filevault, but when I try to do it, a dialogue box appears saying I have insufficient diskspace. The problem is, it says an additional 4080 GB are required! Unfortunately I don't have access to a drive of such capacity, and my internal drive is a mere 80 gigs. Does anyone know why this is happening?
    Any advice is appreciated!

It appears that it's a bug.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/
en/mh1908.html has some information on the size
requirements, but doesn't address the problem you're
seeing. A search in thise forums for filevault
or file vault should bring up similar
problems. AFAIK, the best thing for you to do is
backup your home folder to another volume, create
another admin user account, log into the new account,
delete the problematic account without saving the
data, recreate the account, using the same
username/password combo, log into it, copy the

  • Problem:  Turning off/Connecting to Computer

My ipod will not turn off!! The play/pause button will not get my ipod to turn off. In addition, it's forever stuck in charging mode, draining battery until it turns off. I tried to reset it by connecting it to the computer, but it wont connect (nothing happens on the ipod or the computer) nor will it charge with the computer. Fortunately, I tried to put it into a dock charger, and that worked in charging the ipod again, but the problems above still remain.
What is wrong with this thing? Last time I used it was not too long ago, I added some songs to my ipod and everything was fine and dandy! Is it a battery problem that's affecting the ipod? Should I get the battery replacement thing apple offers (my warranty has expired).

This doesn't seem to work for me. Thanks though
    I made a miscomment.
The ipod turns off when I press the play/pause, but then it turns on automatically after 1 sec and says charging (if it's in the charger) or it says charged if it's not hooked up to anything.
I can't read the battery levels.

  • Problem turning off video`s...sound continues to play

Hi, I am experiencing a problem when turning off a video and switching to listening to music - the sound continues to play over the music track or audiobook - is anyone else experiencing this problem? The only way I can get round it is by pressing the next/fast forward button....but then of course when I want to watch the remainder of the video it restarts from the beginning, not from where I left off! Any help would be appreciated.

  • Problem Turning Off File Vault

My computer said it would take just under two hours to turn off File Vault. The process appeared to move along as it was supposed to. After the two hours, a message popped up that "copying is complete." My computer has been stuck on that screen for ten hours. Do I leave it? The "Cancel" button is grayed out. I don't want to lose my information. Your advice would be appreciated greatly. Thanks.

How much free space do you have?
If is possible that you don't have enough free space to turn off FV because it must make an unencrypted version before it can be turned off.
Do you have backups of your data?

  • Problem turning off snap to guide MX11.0.2

    I am using FreehandMX 11.0.2 on a Mac G5 OS10.4.10 - I can no
longer use the view menu to show/hide guides, lock or turn off
snap. I can use the layers menu to show/hide or lock but cannot
turn off snap. I also cannot delete the Guide layer from the layers
menu. I have tried changing keyboard shortcut, deleting preference
file from settings folder but nothing works.

    Willem,
I don't use the F-keys in combination with modifier keys.
    Opt-F1 through
Opt-F8 are used by the system. Check in System
    Preferences>Keyboard &
Mouse>Keyboard Shortcuts. Mac OS uses F9 through F12 for
    the Dock, Exposé
    and Dashboard.
If you never use certain system shortcuts, you could disable
    them in System
Prefs and thereby free them up for use in FreeHand. I have
    disabled the Mac
OS Spotlight shortcuts because they conflict with the
    magnifier tools in FH
    and Photoshop.
Here's what I use in FreeHand (US English keyboard layout):
    Grid>Show___F6
    Grid>Snap___F7
    Guides>Show___Opt+Cmd+;(semicolon)
    Guides>Snap___F8
Make sure when setting shortcuts in FH, you check "Go to
    conflict on assign"
to make sure you haven't used the same shortcut twice.
If you use a non-English keyboard layout, you might be seeing
    different
    results.
If you're using Entourage 2004 11.0, make sure to update to a
    current
version, because there's a known conflict with keyboard
    shortcuts in Adobe
    apps there.

  • 6300 problem - turning off - help!

    Hi
This morning I woke up and my mobile was off.
I turned it on at the top and noticed the battery was full - strange.
When I try to go into my messages it says 'Message storage memory not available', after a few seconds the messages appear again.
Once the messages have appeared, on the main screen in the top left hand corner an envelope appears (like I have received a message) this then turns round to be a paperclip. Then a 'G' in a box appears to the left of this other symbol.
These symbols then disappear, then reappear 3 times before the phone turns off again.
Any ideas what could be wrong?
(Sorry to have gone on a bit, just want to make sure I provide all details in case it helps)
    Thanks so much!

you can try updating your phone to the latest firmware using the NSU that normaly resolves the reset/shutdown issues.
as far as the message storange message is concerned that is because the handset is still loading and can take a few mins for the memory to fully load this happens on most of the newer nokias.
the symbol u are seeing with the paper clip rotating means that an multimedia message is trying to be recieved by your handset and the G in a box means the handset is using the GPRS connection to receive this.
my conclusion to this is the settings for the MMS may not be on the handset correctly causing it to shut down.. so i would contact your provider to recieve the latest settings... also a software update would be advisable to resolve the resetting
