Problem UDMA6 with 648 Max

My PC :
Pentium 4 2,4 Ghz + 256 Mo Pc 2700
Windows 2000 SP3
1 hd Maxtor 60Go ( IDE 1)
1 DVD + 1 CDWR ( IDE 2)
Windows refuse to switch the hard drive in UMDA 133 ( mode 6 ) and stay in PIO.
but my CDs switch in DMA and UDMA 2. why ??
I flashed my Bios ( V1.3) but it's the same.
my SiS IDE driver is :  v2.2.1.0
thanks...

You should not run a slower device  on the same IDE channel, move the CD ROM over to the secondary IDE channel and you should notice a difference.  )
Keep your hard drive(s) on primary IDE, and place CD ROMS, DVD/CDRW's on the secondary channel.
If you run a number of drives you want a reliable p/s-350W+ for higher end graphic cards-hd, etc.
Also check PIO/UDMA setting in BIOS...Default is AUTO, etc.

  • External USB 2.0 HDD Problems with 648 Max

I'm getting I/O error and/or very slow read performance from an external Maxtor HDD when I use the rear USB ports that came with my 648 Max. When I use the front ports on my case, I get very good read and write performance. I installed a firewire card and it also works very well. Why can't I use the ports that are connected to the motherboard?

ok i dont have the manual with me to make sure if this is correct or not but you can check yours.
i know that alot of the newer motherboards have a mixture of 1.1 usb and 2.0 so it is possable that the msi 648 is the same (again look at your manual) and if so you might be hooking it up to your 1.1 port whereas your case usb is hooked to your 2.0 usb ports.
this is just a guess but it is worth checking out in your manual. hope this helps.

  • I can´t reset with 648 max

    I have a motherboard 648 max.
    1 DDR 512 MB 400 MHZ
    1 HD 120 GB Ide
    1 Ati Radeon 9100
Problem is can´t  reset my computer , when it initiates my monitor it remains if signal and leds power y hd ignitions.
I have to unplug behind source feeding and to return to connect it.
They can say the solution to me?
    The bios have defaults settings.

Where do the D-Bracket LEDs stop? The 648Max has a lot of problems with DDR400. Also needs a strong PSU. Go through some of the older posts. You'll find a plethora of information.
    Do a search for 648Max.

  • SiS AGP drivers with 648 MAX-F and TI-4600 GS

A few days ago I bought a new computer. Here are the specs:
    Compucas 6A21B 300W SuperLowNoise
    Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 2,4GHz
    MSI 648 MAX-F
    Kingston 512Mb 333Mhz DDR
    Seagate Barracuda ATA V 80Gt 7200rpm
    Gainward Geforce4 Ti4600 ultra/750 XP golden sample
    windows 2000
I have tried everything to get the SiS AGP drivers work. Every time I start with them I get a white screen with colourful horizontal lines. There is also gray at the bottom of my screen. This picture comes after the windows screen, when it should say preparing network connections and everything. I have service pack 3 and DirectX 9. I have tried many different versions of the drivers from both MSI and Gainward/NVidia. I even upgraded my BIOS. From bios I have tried all the DRAM timing things. Now I have a nice set of drivers on my computer. Is there anything else to do than wait for new drivers? It works fine after I uninstall the AGP drivers. Does the operating system matter?

Did you try the newest drivers from Nvidia's website?
Did you try video card in another system when you had it in the shop, and another video card in your system? I take it you did a clean install of Windows XP. Mine has had no problems in WindowsXP, It's a Chaintech Ti4600. While I do have Windows 2000, I haven't used it on this system so I'm no help there. Also did you try setting BIOS to default settings? Come to think of it, I think it defaults to graphics card in PCI slot, maybe I'm thinking of another board. Don't know if that would make a difference anyway. Can you go into safemode and update or remove the agp drivers and start over? Is this fun or what? Did the AGP drivers you installed, create a Sis agp utility folder in the start menu? That might give you some information about any possible problems. What are the agp voltage readings in the BIOS?
Oops! Checked my BIOS, there is no setting for graphics card in PCI slot. Way too many motherboards.  I'd try re-installing XP from scratch, install all sis drivers, install Nvidia drivers, install XP service pack. If that doesn't work, get mad, scream and run out the front door with arms flailing!

  • Wierd issues with 648 MAX-L

I recently put a system together with the 648 Max-L mobo.
    P4 2.4
    Maxtor ATA133
    Windows XP
    1 Gig PC2700 Crucial
    Radeon 9700 (non-pro)
Philips Seismic Edge (was Aureal Superquad)
    Having some weird issues;
    1) Occasional crashes -I ran Goldmemory tests and the ram failed.....so I am RMA'g the ram but......ran Memtest 86 and it passed! ????????? So I think maybe it's good ram and the mobo is having a compatibility issue.
    2) When I turn the PC off, the drives light up! Namely the operting lights actually come on and burn steady when I turn off the PC....I have to hit the main kill switch to shut them off. Really weird.
    3) Maxtor has bad sector, but I am going to do a low end format that Maxtor says will fix that.
Anyone have any ideas? Once I do everything else, the next step is to get a new mobo....but this one works good other then the above issues, and I hate to waste the $75.00 I paid for what should be a good mobo. I could get another board and RMA this one....but if it IS the board I doubt I will buy the same one.
Anyone have any similar issues or ideas?

Oh, It also is in a mid tower ATX case with a 400W Mustang power supply.

  • 648 max , testing base and extended memory

I dont see the thread i answered to one time that someone spoke of using ddr400 with 648 max or max-L board and they were getting testing base and extended memory error from the LED's.  Well i just got the same error today and my system would not boot i cut the power to the PS. and turned it back on it would start to boot and hang i could barely get to the windows logo sometimes the vid card wouldnt even boot the logo to the screen. This is with an updated mobo that msi sent me that i had just put in , it seemed to run fine at first then this problem started occuring.  The only difference i had in the setup from the previous outdated board was i had the mem in DIMM 3 and not DIMM 1, so i moved the memory back over to DIMM 3 and now the problem is gone. Just something for those of you with the same problem to try.
Oh and i forgot one more issue, i cannot set the dram speed in the bios manually i have ddr 333 it should be 167 mhz so i set it to 4/5  and the system will not boot at all  i end up having to reset cmos.  I called MSI about that and they told me to just have it set to SPD , I said i know that and im fine with leaving it that way but it should let me set it manually if i wanted to and that i wondered if that had anything to do with the random " testing base and extended memory " problem.

    It was probably myt thread...
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/e_service/forum/viewindex.php?threadid=6204&boardid=10&styleid=1
Have done some testing with both DDR333 and DDR400 and my results are in the thread.
Right no I'm using my DDR400 as DDR333, manually set to 167MHz, using DIMM1, and havn't seen any problems. I'll try the DIMM3 to see if I get any changes.
And by the way.. I tried setting my DDR400 manually to 200MHz and it wouldn't boot at all. After a lot of ugly language I finally got it back to the BIOS....after a reset of the CMOS.
Seams like you should use SPD if you want to use the correct freq for your RAM.
Have you tested the new 1.3 BIOS?

  • 648 max and HT

alrighty guys, im building my own computer and decided to go with 648-max because my friend has one with radeon9700 pro and 0 problems, so i thoguht id follow his line. anyways, im going to get a P4 3.06 ghz processor with hyper-threading (HT) enabled on it. now i see on MSI's mainboard page there is 2 diff 648-max's, basically one with HT support and one without. now my question is, is the HT support on that board just part of a BIOS upgrade or part of the hardware? i found 648-max's for like 80$ at places liek newegg but i cant find 0 places that specifically state it enables HT in the specs. is this new 648-max, the one with HT, replacing the older? or is it a completely separate board? if it is a different board, could someone please link me to a site selling one, i would like to check it out, thanks you much
    -Brian

I have just purchased a 845PE Max with Hyper-Threading ready written all over it. It even has the label stating " Intel 845PE Hyper-Threading Technology" Well guess what? Even though my CPU (P4 2.4Ghz B), and my motherboard 845PE MAX both support Hyper-Threading you still need the BIOS that supports the Hyper-Threading. The BIOS does not come with the option to enable Hyper-Threading.The board comes with the latest BIOS update. I have written to MSI requesting the correct BIOS. I guess it's the luck of the draw? Good luck with your board!

  • Problems with MSI 648 Max

I have problems with my sons MSI 648 Max Mainboard, everything seems to be alhright, but when I upgraded the BIOS version to the lastest. the computer starts to hang. I have also but a new harddisk in to the computer an some more RAM. I think the problem begin in the powersupply, its just a 250 W powersupply to the computer, and we have av 1.8 GHz Celeron. Have anything had this problem, or is it something I should think about after the upgrade of the BIOS?.

I know that 250 watt is to small, but the computer have function great in 2 months. But after i have taking out the old harddisk and but in a new bigger one, and placed some more RAM (256). After that I installed Windows XP on the new harddisk, but after that I upgraded my BIOS version to 1.4. After the upgrade of the BIOS the computer starts to freeze after a while. I tried to reinstall XP but the computer freeze under the installation. I have tried to switch back to older BIOS version, but I cant make it work. I have really hard to believe that the powersupply is the reason why the compter freeze.

  • Weird problem with my 648 MAX-L board

    Hello friends:
    I recently brought a 648 MAX-L board and had a weird
problem: every time when I power on the system, it
could not find my hard drive (Seagate 80G/7200 rpi).
But when I reboot, the hard drive is found and the system could then boot without problem. So the problem
is that I have to reboot one every time I'd start my
PC. This is weird. I suspect something is wrong with
    BIOS battery?

if you disable fast boot does it start first time
a weak psu may be related to this, drive not spinning up fast enough first time

  • SiS 648 MAX problem!

    Hello!
I have a very annoying problem with my MSI 648 MAX board.
The computer freezes and reboots when i put in another DIMM in it.
I have two identical TwinMos 256mb PC3200 DDR modules.
They both work fine when they arent used together.
When i put in the other one, the sympthoms i described above happen.
I have formatted c: and tryed with both WinXP and Win2000.
I'm using the latest SiS AGP & IDE drivers.
Nothing in the system is overclocked.
I have upgraded with the latest bios.
    Other system speccs:
    P4 2.0 (400mhz).
    ASUS GF4 Ti4200.
    80gb Seagate.
    350W "Noname" Powersupply.
Is this a known problem and will I just have to face the fact that this won't work? :(

    It's a JNC Power Supply 350W.
    The amps are:
    +3.3V = 24A
    +5V = 35A
    +12V = 12A
    -12V = 0.8A
    -5V = 0.5A
It has worked fine with this board before and with another board (Abit th7 II raid).
The problem itself is getting worse, windows freezes with just 1 memory-stick now :(
Formatted once again and tried WinXP and Win2k without any success..
The Memory / GFX works fine in another computer.

  • MSI 648 max problems, please help

Just put a new machine together and I am having some problems, hopefully someone can help.
My machine seems to run pretty stable in OS, but dies when any game is played. It will crash anywhere from 2 minutes - 45 minutes in the game. Ive tried several games: C&C generals, unreal2, etc with the same results.
Bios are updated and nothing is overclocked. Win XP is fully updated.
    Specs:
    MSI 648 max, 533fsb
    p4 2.4 northwood
    Seagate 80gig hd 7200rpm
    MSI g4 ti4200

HSF currently being used is the retail box HSF
With the case sides on,  here are temps at idle after 10 minutes in OS:
    Proc: 136

With the case sides off, here are temps after running 10+ minutes in OS:

    Vid card: 114
Here is the error that pops up (after crashing) when playing Command and Conquer: Generals:
    Technical Difficulties
    Sorry a serious error occured
    Thanks in advance

Well my roomate cancelled the memory test after 12 hours, so I dont know those results.
I do know that after removing 1 of the DIMMS, the machine seemed to be stable playing games.
I sure wish MSI would have stated it only accepted 1 double sided DIMM.. especially when the reccomend Kingston ram, which is double sided......
Me and my roomate BOTH bought this motherboard, while my roomate only bought 2 DIMMS of 512, I bought 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So now it looks like we need to return these motherboards and get new ones... I HAVENT EVEN GOT MINE OUT THE BOX!!!!!!!!
Any reccomendations on an MSI motherboard (or any) that support  double sided DIMMS? I am looking for 3 slots...
    thanks...
Any other advise on how to get this motherboard to work with all this ram would help too, so we dont have to RMA through newegg....
Anyone from MSI read this board?????

  • MSI 648 Max - Display Problems

I recently bought the MSI 648 Max motherboard, as my system needed an upgrade quite badly.  To cut the costs down a bit, I’ve used some parts from my previous system (eg the video card which is an 2x AGP, 64 Mb, Kyro based card) but got new RAM, CPU and psu.
I put together the system (described below), loaded Windows ME, updated all drivers with latest releases, and the thing works but the quality of the display is really bad    ;( .  That is, I get lots of video artefacts (shadows, fading text, vertical lines, distorted colours, etc).  The video card was working fine on my other machine.  Also, Sisoft Sandra says that the card is operating at 2x AGP, as it should.
I am not overclocking; some of the BIOS parameters I used are as follows (based on the OPTIMAL DEFAULTS):
    AGP Aperture Size                     128 Mb
    DRAM CAS Latency                      by SPD
    Timing Setting Mode                      NORMAL
    MA 1T/2T Select                      AUTO
    Primary Graphics Adapter      AGP
Allocate IRQ to PCI VGA      NO
    CPU/DRAM Frequency Ratio      by SPD
DRAM Frequency                      167 MHz (for now)
    CPU Frequency                      133 MHz
    AGP/PCI Frequency                      66/33
    DRAM Vcore          2.6 V
    CPU Vcore         AUTO
The system temperature showed in the Health Status is less than 40 C (104 F).
I have tried the latest AMI BIOS (version 1.3), and then reverted to version 1.0, but I still have the same display problem.
I would really appreciate some help.
    Ciao

  • MSI 648 Max with AGP X8 - BIOS update

I have replaced my old AGP card with Radeon 9550 256MB for use with my new Dell 20" WS monitor.
Every time, after starting or during 3DMark03, it crashed back to desktop and sometimes retarting my pc.  I try ram settings, aperature etc with no luck.  My pc has TrueBlue 480 watt PSU and the voltage reading is good.
In the end, I searched this forum and found out it was the problem with AGP X8 so I changed it to AGP X4 via ATI control panel, my pc went through 3Dmark03 with no problems at all.  AGP X4 works flawless.
Regarding BIOS - my motherboard is SIS 648 MAX-L HT ready (Hyper-threading) and its latest BIOS version is v3.1.  I'm just wondering that is my board exactly the same as non-HT 648 MAX board physically?  Since they use same chipset with same layout and also because I noticed the BIOS update for non-HT version is different with v1.5 and has the fix for Radeon 9700 problem which could be related to my problem.  Since I'm using Pentium 4 2.53Ghz, Hyper-threading is a useless feature, could I flash my board with this BIOS?
    Thanks in advance

then leave it at that then. the actual real-life performance difference between 4X and 8X is negligible
Thanks, just asking...I guess I answered my own question!

  • Help for SIS 648 MAX-L Startup Problem

I just bought an MSI-648MAX-L, a 2.4GHz cpu and a Jaton GeForce4 TI4200 card. Installed all of the above + PC2700 512 MB RAM and a WD 80GB hard drive, floppy and CD. Turn on the power and my screen flickers all four of the diagnostic leds light up green and then nothing. I hear the hard drive spinning and the CPU fan and video card fan but nothing else. Tried one other AGP video card and a PCI video card but nothing on the screen. Seems like the BIOS is not loading. So I turn the computer off and set the BIOS reset jumper. Turn it back on again and still nothing. Checked all the connections, the seating of the CPU and tried again, still nothing. Any idea what might be wrong?? I hope I don't have to buy another MotherBoard and also I hate the idea of removing my CPU once installed. ;(
    Thanks for your help..
    Kumar.

What kind of video card is it?
If it's a radeon 9700 pro, look in one of the other threads  on this site to figure out what revision you have, rev 1.1 or 1.2 9700 pros will not work on some 648 max boards ( well for me it was 648 max L im not sure about the 648 max but im assuming it has the same problem.
What happens with radeon is since the mobo sets the agp automatically, and there is the 8x bug the system doesnt boot. But the card will work fine on machines that have 4x, In this case RMA the card to radeon and make sure to specifiy that you get a 1.3 rev.
Otherwise you stated you have tried other processors and memory that were "known" to be good.
DDR 400 or DDR 333 memory?
