Problem unscrewing K9A2 Platinum mobo from case

I need to move my K9A2 Platinum mobo ( along with peripherals and add-on boards ) to another computer case. All has gone well with removing all my peripherals and add-on boards from the old case but when I have tried to remove the mobo a two of the screws cannot be unscrewed. They were held to the bottom of the old case with metal clips. I could eventually remove the mobo by forcing out the metal clips but no matter what I try I cannot seem to unscrew either of the screws from its metal clip. Whether I hold the metal clip on the bottom of the mobo in place and unscrew the screw, or whether I hold the screw in place and turn the metal clip on the bottom of the mobo, the threads holding the screw to the metal clip are not unloosening the screw from the metal clip.
I seem stymied. The only practical solution I can think of is to cut through the area holding the metal clip on the bottom of the case with some sort of small blowtorch-like device, if something like that exists, but naturally I am afraid any heat I apply will damage the mobo.
Thoughts ? Suggestions ? I really need to get these clips off so I can transfer my mobo to another computer case I have since it is my main desktop computer right now, although I will soon be building another system

Another thing you can try is carefully pull on the to put pressure against the screws and then see if it helps to get the threads engaged. If no luck then your only other choice is to carefully drill out the screws and hope the drill doesn't slip and damage the MB.
I have had similar problem in the past and putting pressure against the screw like that usually does the trick.

  • My six year old K9A2 Platinum Mobo (Is it failing?)

Hey All, I'm a long time MSI customer. I've owned at least three MSI mobo's. On my day-to-day rig, I've maintained a K9A2 Platinum. Which, is rather old (6 years). I've attempted to keep it in good working order, but over the past year. I have been encountering a persistent problem with the on-board Sata ports. Sata ports 1-4 have trouble reading my HD, during the boot sequence it fails to read the drive. The AMIBios will not recognize the HD if, I have it connected to port 1. 2-4 it works, however once booted and in windows. The system is unstable. I experience freezes and delays in HD processing. Essentially, I abandoned the on-board Sata ports and bought a HDD Controller, it's a Rosewill Sata II/ATA PCIe card. It runs and works, but lately I have been experiencing disk read errors upon boot, after my PC has been shut-down for 6+ hours. I have to restart, enter bios and "trick" it to boot. Basically just restarting a few times.
I've attempted multiple troubleshooting techniques, ranging from Memory test diagnostics all the way to Hijackthis and looking for any malicious programs on my system. It's clean, I use Nod32 and the HD is defragged and optimized on a weekly basis. I've flashed the BIOS, running the latest version.  Upgraded the CPU from dual-core to quad-core (more so because, I wanted a faster processor). I've pretty much exhausted, what options I can think of to combat the issue. I'm running windows xp pro sp3. I know this mobo is 64bit compatible and windows 7/8 ready. However, I just haven't made the leap yet.
Wondering, if anyone could provide information on how to properly diagnose Sata II port problems. Thank you in advance.
Apologies forgot to include system specs:

Thank you again, for the replies. I unhooked the 24pin ATX main power connector, eyeballed the pins and cleaned the caps. I reseated the connector, and I haven't encountered an error yet. However, I'm not convinced and ordering a new PSU. I'm better off with a new one anyway, even though this stock PSU has served me well over the years. I would test, but I don't have another 500w PSU on hand. I do have a digital voltage reader. I'm going to test it. (mostly for science) I was beginning to suspect the PSU, since this has been an on-going issue. You guys, have been much more helpful than the MSI techi-support. The tech immediately assumed it was the HD, in their reply to my concerns. Anyway, long story short. I know it's not the HD. I'll check the bios, voltage reading just for comparison. Thank you once more for the help and advice. :-)
Wanted to reply because I had that board for years and liked it a lot...  Yea, I think you can get it running....!  Upgrading the PSU is solid advice like the other posters have pointed out.  It surely can't hurt *anything*.  (Great thing about the PC is upgrading individual components when it suits you, right?)  Best of luck in getting it running to your satisfaction!
--About tech support in general...one of the most difficult jobs there is in "PC-dom" is long-distance tech support.  Sight unseen, the best technician is still only guessing when he offers suggestions, but the best advice you are likely to get is from people who have long years of experience and who have tackled  and solved many a problem themselves--people like the ones in this forum, as you point out.  The best anyone can do, though, in this situation is offer advice and opinions based on that experience.  As you noticed, people who inhabit a company's "official tech support" are often salaried, scripted employees who can read a problem checklist wonderfully but often have little to no understanding of how the various concepts the checklists cover actually work...  So, yea, often you are better off seeking out a forum for its advice--only going back to the company as a last resort if you've tried everything the people advising you come up with--it's probably time for an RMA at that point (if the product is under warranty) or else purchasing new components (as in your particular case.)  Again, good luck--I loved that board!!!!

    hello,
I have a problem for the raid on my msi k9a2 platinum.
currently, I have 2 SATA hard drives, on first (samsung 750 GB) I have vista ultimate 64 installed, and on second (maxtor 200 GB) I have games. in the bios I see "Raid: Ide" and when I met "Raid: Raid" blue screen at startup vista.

Why are you trying to run a single drive in RAID mode? Sounds logical that Windows would Blue Screen, you have no RAID array. Just keep it running at IDE mode, should be fine...
PCI latency should be set as low as possible, though I doubt you will notice any difference between the 64 and 32 settings. This setting mostly applies when you have add in cards that need to hold the PCI bus longer than default...

  • K9A2 Platinum/Lian li case front usb connection

The LIAN LI PC-61 Case has 2 USB inputs on the front of the case. The cable coming from the USB inputs has one 10 pin connector with pin #10 blocked. Sticking out from the 10 plug connector are 2 sets of connectors (4 pieces). A continuation of the 10 pin connector.
    VCC 1 (red), USB 1- (white), USB 1+ (green)=in one piece.  Ground 1 (black)=separate.
    VCC 2 (red), USB 2- (white), USB 2+ (green)=in one piece,  Ground 2 (black)=separate.
The K9A2 MB has 3 connectors labeled JUSB1/2/3. My card reader (it only has the single 10 pin connector) is on JUSB1.
I tried using the Lian Li 10 pin connector alone but nothing works. How should i connect this configuration?
Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Front Panel connector for JAUD1 on K9A2 Platinum mobo

I bought some headphones for my computer and they work well when plugged into the line out and mic on the back. It's a pain unplugging my speakers in the back and plugging in the headphones, then switching back when I want my speakers again.
I noticed there is an internal JAUD1 connector which suggests that I can attach a front panel audio device to it. Where can I get such a device and what is it called ( I can look on New Egg if I know what to look for ) ? Does MSI sell one ? Does it attach in front into one of my drive bays ( I have lots of them in a Lian Li case ) ? If I have the device attached and plug my headphones into it, can I listen to audio through my headphones without having to unplug my speakers ?

My case is about 10 years old I believe. It is a Lian Li PC-70USB Full Tower ATX Case and it still is excellent. But it did not come with a front panel audio connector. Is it possible to buy one anywhere which can fit into a drive bay and which connects to the JAUD1 on the K9A2 ? I will search New Egg for "front panel audio connector", and I will ask Lian Li if perhaps they have one for older cases.
You can buy a new soundcard that comes with some front panel bay too ,though is much more expensive than a simple new case.
If you managed 10 years without a front jack why would you want it now ?!
Buy some USB headshones ,if there is a front USB connector ,maybe you get even better sound quality.
The sound on the Platnium is not so great anyway ,i ve turned it off in the first 2 months of usage to use either X-FI either D1 which are much better sound wise.

  • ESATA problem on K9A2 Platinum

I've been having a baffling problem with my new external hard drive, a WD MyBook Studio Edition.  It's firewire and usb connections work fine, but I have had zero luck getting the esata port to work.  When I have the HD plugged in and turned off, turning on the computer will turn on the white light on the HD that means its on, but I can't see it in the bios or in vista.  Any ideas?

Disk manager doesn't see the disk yet, that is my first and biggest problem.
How do I know if the port is turned on?
    Bios is set to AHCI.
Sorry I didn't see these responses sooner, apparently I didn't have notifications turned on.  I really appreciate you all being helpful, as WD tech support told me I was on my own pretty much.

  • K9A2 Platinum PROBLEMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well, im on BOARD #2, and #3 is on it's way....
ok, I purchased the first board on NewEGG thogether with a Phenom 9950BE, 4GB OCZ 2x2 DDR2 1066 5-5-5-15 @2.1v and Saphire ATI HD4850. well the first try was bad, the board would not recognize my 4 WD RAPTORS, the promise controller would not detect them, and the SB600 could only read 2 out of 4 and only if 2 where connnected and not the 4....
well, I send that board back, in the mean time I visited Fry's Electronics and purchased the board again, now this time is working so, so...   I managed to install VISTA64 SP1 with all the patches, etc, and play few games, except i still have problems:  I disabled the promise controller as i need to run 2 ARRAY's of RAID 0 (2 Raptors 740 each, one array for OS and one for GAMES) the problem is that I get random lockups, Blue Screens, etc. also when I choose to restart the computer or send it to SLEEP, as it is shutting down the HD make a weird sound that they never made before and if I restarted the SB600 raid bios would not detect the arrays, i physically have to power down, wait and restart, so the arrays are detected.
also I try to overclock the PC, the Phenom is able to run at 3ghz but it freezes some times immediately but others it would last few hours with gaming in between, i tried several voltages from 1.33v to 1.41v and some times get a BlueScreen that reads a processors error, one core did't respond on expected time... or something like that.
    [bashing removed]
    my spec's are:
AMD Phenom 9950 Black Edition B3
    MSI K9A2 platinum 1.5 bios
    Saphire HD4850
    4GB OCZ DDR2 1066 5-5-5-15 @2.1v Dual CH.(2x2GB)
4x WD RAPTORS WD740 on RAID 0 (two ARRAYS)
    PIONEER DVD-RW DL IDE
    CoolerMaster STACKER case w/2 120mm fans and 1 80mm
Dual PS: CoolerMaster Real 450w PS & Ultra 400w PS

well, the design of the CoolerMaster STACKER case is for two Power supply's working in tandem, it has a connector that turns on both supply's at the same time, so I split the load as follows:   all Motherboard plugs, 3 120mm fans, 1 80mm fan & Pioneer DVD drive; powered by thr CoolerMaster REAL 450w, it list power as follows: PEAK (60S) +3.3v@30A, +5v@35A, +12v1@18A, +12v2@16A, -12v@blank?, [email protected]
    CONTINUOS: +3.3v@20A, +5v@25A, +12v1@12A, +12v2@10A, [email protected], [email protected]
as for the other power supply it powers the following: HD's (as of now 2; 1 WD Raptor and 1 Seagate 7200.9), 1 120mm fan and the ATI HD4850
I don't think Im starving the system of power...
im installing windows vista 64 (yeah, yeah, XP is more stable, but I had an ABIT A8N nforce4SLI, Athlon X2 3800 OC's, 2GB Patriot DDR, 2x Geforce 7800GT OC's on SLI and 4 HD's, and I never had any problems, and I had the CPU running on stock cooler and stock voltage. and I had VISTA 32, and 64 and never since I bought it ever give me problems, i could OC everything from CPU, memory, HT, PCI-e, etc.
why this board is so bad?
this is the current ERROR i have just now:
"A clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor within the allocated time interval..."
    technical info. ***STOP: 0X00000101  (0X0000000000000031, 0X0000000000000000, 0XFFFFF980012C6180, 0X0000000000000001)
I did enable promise controller and used the 2 HD on the ports controlled by it as JOBD each, the RAM is @ 1066mhz, voltage as recomended 2.1v and I did try to OC the processor just to try, since that is the purpose of buying the Black edition 9950 to 15x200 @ 3000mhz 1.41v, everything else is on Auto.
before I get SCHOOLED by other users, yes I do want to OC the proc. I have installed vista 64 w/o OC the proc and it runs ok, but i still had random BSOD here and there...  but since this is proclaimed the best board for OC the Phenom and AMD even pushes the SPIDER plataform and makes it easy to OC.  I also just installed an after market heatsink (CoolerMaster Gemin II w/2 120mm 1200rpm) and the bios reports the CPU @ 29* C

  • K9A2 Platinum Sata Raid Problems

I could not get my 2 500 gb seagate 7200.11 drives to work on the sb600 raid controller, in raid 1 (set to raid mode in bios).  I'd set it up and it would remain functional until I formatted it and put stuff on it. Then when I restarted, it says critical and can't locate the second drive, but it shows up in the list of definable drives.  My older 200 gb seagates 7200.9 in the same setup do not have this problem.  I finally got my 500s working by hooking them up to the promise controller instead.  (Although no longer a current problem, I wouldn't mind knowing what would cause this for future occasions.)
My new problem is, I had to unhook all but the drive I wanted to install Windows XP on (A separate 120 JBOD configured drive) so I could get it to be C:/.  This all went fine.  However when I hooked up the 500s again, Windows XP would not boot, the screen just stayed black, with them not hooked up, it boots just fine, with the 200s as well.  When running the Windows XP setup again, the 500s appear as C:/ instead of the 120 in the disk select screen of the install.  It's like the 500s took over the drive letter when they are hooked up and thus can't load.  Is there some way to stop it from doing this or am I completely off on this.
    My computer spec is:
    K9A2 Platinum
    AMD X2 6000
    2*2gb OCZ PC6400
    ATI Radeon 3870
    700 Watt OCZ PSU
Update: Installing XP ignoring the fact its not C: fails.  It copies all the files onto it, then after restarting I get a black screen.
Another Update: On a whim I tried disabling the SB600 raid and set it to AHCI instead as I read that other people were having problems with it and it all works perfectly now.  It's too bad this doesn't work, but I'll just put the 200s back in my old computer instead.

I'm having the exact same problem you did. Same Mobo. Except I started off with Promise RAID 1 because when I tried using SB600 RAID, my SATA DVD drive would not function in Vista Ultimate x64. So I had my Raid 1 configured on Promise T3 with BIOS 2.8.1030.0021 using 2 320GB drives. One of them Seagate, one WD, both 3GB/s transfer, only difference was that Seagate has 16MB cache, while the WD has 8MB. But both drives worked fine in the array for some time, and then after doing some updates from Windows Updates now the Raid config shows that encountered a critial status, "A disk member of an array has failed or is not responding", "Problem is detected with Array : 1". And when I go to the see the Array status it shows the Seagate drive on ID channel 1, but for the 2nd drive it shows questions marks all the way through the item line. I checked the drive, it seems fine. And even when I go to define a second Array, it shows the WD available on channel ID 3. So it definitely see both drives, but how do I re-add that WD drive that it doesn't see to my earlier defined array without loosing data on my Seagate drive?

  • Continuing K9A2 Platinum & Vista Install Problems - new variance

    Hi All,
This is a contiunuation of my earlier post. https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=113866.0
    My full system specs are:
    MSI K9A2 Platinum MB
    OCZ Technology 2x2GB 240DIMM PC2-6400 Gold
    AMD Phenom 9500
    2 x Samsung SATA DVD Writer SH-203B/BEBN
    GeForce 8800GTX 768MB PCIE DVI
    Coolermaster Cosmos case
    Seagate 320GB SATA2 HDD ST3320620AS
    OCZ 1010 GameXstream PSU
Following the problems described in my earlier post (see above) - which I thought were HDD related - I have tonight bought the Seagate HDD listed above. Installed the HDD, attempted to install Vista Home Premium 64.
Installation seemed to go fine, towards the end - when you get the 'Windows will now start for the first time" screen - the system blue-screened (too quick to get the message, looked like a RAM issue) and crashed. Re-started and then the installation aborted itself.
Second installation try: The system went through the installation process, I passed the bit where you choose the partition to install (did a format), installation seemed to go fine, one re-start, system gets stuck in the 'Completing Installation' phase, I would say roughly around 70% installed according to the blue progress bar.
Interstingly, when I now attempt to perform a new installation attempt I do not even get to the screen where you choose the language and country settings, I just get stuck at the black screen with the Microsoft name written and the green, interrupted bar sliding from left to right.
Am I back at the same stage where I was in my previous post https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=113866.0
This is crazy. I have built around five or six systems so far and never had problems like these...
    Please help.
    C.

@Russ_xp: No, not yet. I have been scouring the OCZ site to get an idea on compatibility and settings but have been disheartened when the advice for the K9A2 and my memory modules said: "Please call"
Sent an email to European support of OCZ and am awaiting their reply...
I had a look at the memory timings in the MB's BIOS, though and have to admit that I was baffled by the number of different settings that I could manipulate. On the MB's that I played with before there were less fields to manipulate so entering 5-5-5-15-2T was easier (don't laugh).
    Cheers,

  • K9A2 Platinum Cold Boot problem

Hi, recently I have encounter this problem on my K9A2 Platinum that didn't occur before, where after powered off for a few hours, when booting up, there is power to the system but the system won't boot (i.e. no POST or anything). The reset button on my chassis also won't work at that time. And after pressing the power button to shutdown, it won't power up again until I've turn off the mains and wait until the power LED on the mobo to turn off and turning on the mains again.
After that, my system would be able to boot successfully, but the bios clock will be slow by a few hours. E.g. current time 9am, bios time 5am. I've tried flashing the bios to the latest version and resetting the bios settings doesnt help at all.
    Can anyone plz help me?
    My current rig config is
    K9A2 Platinum w/ phenom 9500
    6gb kingston ddr2 1066mhz
    PowerColor HD3870
    Xonar Essence STX
    Coolermaster RPP 750w
    Thanks a lot in advance.

Did your problem start after you added this mixed batch of RAM? When did you add RAM to what you had 2 years ago? AMD works best when only 2 sticks are used and you have messed that up by adding 2 more sticks of different RAM. Does it work OK if you remove two of the sticks?
Not really, I had the mixed batch of ram for almost 8 months without any problems. And the cold boot problem does not happen everytime. I've just tried booting up without any issues this time round. I would see if the problem occurs again and test it with a new cmos battery.

  • Houston, we have a problem.. My new K9A2 Platinum will not install an OS

I purchased a K9A2 Platinum (Version 1) and everything went fine with the hookup and install until I went to install the OS.
    Here's the set up:
    1) 9600 Phenom
    2) 4 GB A-Data DDR2 800 RAM (2 2GB Sticks)
    3) Diamond HD3870 Video Card.
    4) 260 GB WD Caviar Sata Drive
    5) LG 18x DVD
note I also Have a 160 GB PATA WD Caviar as well.. more about the in a minute.
I hooked everything up Sata drive as Sata 1 and DVD as Sata 2,
Checked BIOS to be sure everyone was recognized.
Tried to install Vista 64 bit.
    Entered Location, activations etc..
    and Install began
    1) Copied files
    2) Expanded files
    3) Updated system
(no errors occured during these steps)
System rebooted and got the message Windows is booting for the first time etc...
Then to the finalizing Installation line, which... well.. never gets final (I've left it on that screen for 3+ hours).. Sometimes it locks up.
I tried installing Windows XP and I get through all of the installation, but when it reboots to WIndows from the DVD.. It can't find the OS..
I installed the PATA drive and tried installing Vista to it with no difference in the results.  I suspect I am doing something stupid here (I have done this before.. it's my fifth build and never a problem before). A note that on the PATA if I use the Chip Select jumper (Out of the box settings) Everything's recognized but it sets it up as a slave. IF I set it as a lone master  the BIOS recoginizes it, but windows doesn't. If I set it up as a master.. the system doesn't post. I am going to try to install XP on the PATA and see if that works, However I want to run Vista on this beast, so even if it does, well I still need help..
Yes I promise, this is all a cry for help... If anyone has any ideas I'd surely be apreciative..  In fact I'd be so appreciative I'd help you remove an garbage (viruses, spyware etc..) for free (ok I do that for free anyway.. I'm cajuntek everywhere I go on the net.. You can find me in the Security Cleanup forum at dslreports most often..  Thanks again for any help you guys can provide on this.

I don't trust [Auto] Vmem in the BIOS.
First, Cajuntek, I would try beta BIOS 1.33.
You can download it from http://www.magnaroute.com/deliver/
This BIOS has been very stable for me, MSI Tech Support gave it to me to attempt to solve memory stability I have had with 4x dual rank memory modules.  It doesn't fix that problem but it does make the system more stable and compatible over the publicly released BIOSes as far as I can tell.
I would also suggest you put in a fixed voltage value in the BIOS for your memory.  I use 2.3V because I am overclocking.  You can probably use 2.0V or 2.1V.  It is possible that the [Auto] setting may be giving your system too little voltage on the memory and that may be causing your lockup.

  • K9A2 Platinum/ problems adding 15k SAS to existing 15k SAS with Vista64 OS

This is my first build. I am trying to add a Fujitsu 15k SAS max3147rc to the existing max3147rc which has the Vista64 on it. Both disk are currently setup in the array under LD1 and LD2. This is the only way I was able to see the 2nd HD without formatting the existing HD which has the Vista 64 on it. Both show up in the arrray as Promise 1+0 Stripe/RAID0. The mode is 1+0 and raid is 0 for both drives.
Only the HD with Vista 64 shows up under my computer. Both drives show up under Disk Management. The one with OS is listed as NTFS and the other is listed as unallocatedand only has the option to make it a New Simply Volume.
Shouldn't both of these drives be on LD1 in raid0 for the fastest speed? How can it be done without formatting the drive with Vista 64 on it
Also, here is a link to a diagram of the SAS cable pinout.

Bandwidth is useless when latency kicks in.
As IDE drives have a typical latency of 8~10 ms where SAS has 3~4 ms, there is no way IDE will pass SCSI bandwidth or not.
Except when you use 1 task, but a modern PC doesn't do that.
As for money on a decent RAID-controller, IDE (SATA) will not beat SCSI (SAS), no way on earth.
For click-open only access-time matters, bandwidth is second.
For AVI decoding/encoding bandwidth matters, as you have large continues files.
In my test you need to do more then 1 thing, as is common practice today, I used large files (you could use small) as they show you the difference enormously.
Try it and find out, most people that are not used to SCSI drives believe IDE can beat it.....sorry but it's not the case.
Raptors are old poor performing drives when it comes to SCSI, and the controller won't help you....try a real SCSI (SAS) Raid, it will blow you from your feet
Test under linux, gimme the results of your drives in seconds:
    Code: [Select]
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/export/out.dat bs=1M count=1024
Afer every test, delete the out.dat, show the result screen, then I will show the one for the forum, that has 2 SCSI drives in software-raid1
On a very old machine the result could be this:
    Quote
    1024+0 records in
    1024+0 records out
    1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 332.856 seconds, 3.2 MB/s

  • K9A2 Platinum Boot Problems

Dose any one know why I cant' boot from the DVD drives that I have connected to The SATA ports 5&6, I can see the drive in the CMOS boot order and I chose the first DVD Drive (Port 5) as the first boot disk.  Is it even Possible to boot from the Promise T3 Controller on the MB (K9A2 Platinum V1). I am using the other controller (sb600) for a RAID 0=1 Array. I ma trying to install windows 7 rc.
In order to install XP Pro I had to temp in an IDE CD/DVD drive on the MB IDE Connector

Maybe the DVD-device has a problem, as in not working all that well.
One troubleshooting step would be to try a different port, 5-6 is aimed at RAID it says on the home page:

  • K9A2 Platinum Bus Interface problem

    Currently running:
Motherboard: MSI K9A2 Platinum 1.6 Bios
    CPU: AMD Phenom 9950 BE (O.C. to 3.0 [200 x 15])
RAM: 8 GB G. Skill 1066 RAM (Underclocked to PC 6400 4-4-4-12 for stability)
GPU: 2x Radeon HD 3870 Sapphire Edition
    HDD: 2x Seagate 640 HDD's RAID 0 thru SB600
    OS: XP Pro x64
My problem is my 2 GPU's have a max bus width of 16x 2.0. When using GPUz, only the first card is rated at 16x 2.0, while the second is 16x. Both cards are in the dark blue "mazerine" slots, and the BIOS option for High Speed mode in slots x1 and x4 are turned on "auto." Any ideas?

Are you actually having any problems using the cards?
Normally I can run Farcry2 on Ultimate at 30-40 FPS no problem, however, with the bus width labeled as such i'm running around 4-5 FPS, so the 2nd card is creating a slowdown. I know the card is fine, because when it runs by itself not in x-fire at PCI-E x16 2.0.
