Problem using 2 separate computers with iPhoto

My friend and I have both upgraded to iPhoto 6. We have a problem when she brings a CD of her images to my house. When I load them to my computer I can view them regularly in iPhoto 6. However, when we try to view a slideshow and it gets to her photos, and her photos only, there is a gray screen with a light gray dashed square outline representing the image and it has an exclamation point or question mark in the middle (can't remember which). Also, when I try to export her images to my desktop it will not work.
Has anyone had this problem? I've already rebuilt my thumbnails which didn't help.

Deborah:
The gray screen and exclamation point indicates that iPhoto cannot find the image file that should be displayed. How is your friend burning the disk? It should be via the Share->Burn menu. Then the disk will mount in your iPhoto like this. You can select an album that she created and burned and run a slideshow off of it.
Her disk should look like this with the full sized image files in the Originals folder. You can check to see if they are there.
If the disk was created by exporting the files via the File->Export->File Export menu option then they would have to be imported into your iPhoto library for you to view them in iPhoto or use in a slideshow.
Do you Twango?

    Can I use two separate computers with the same adobe ID.  I want to update my kobo from either unit

    I doubt it is possible to run two instances of iTunes on the computer at the same time.  To do so would require two users to be signed in and running iTunes under each user.
    The better solution would be to either clean up and merge the two libraries or have iTunes running on a second computer.

    Have the project, events and media on one drive which is common to both macs.
    You can download FCP X to both macs using the same Apple ID that it was purchased with.

    Having problems using ION tape express with itunes.  The song is on hard drive as temp1 not the name of the song.  And I have problems playing it in itunes
    because it says it cannot locate the song'

    Then correct the name of the song or point iTunes to the new file.
    Issues with restoring should be directed to the manufacturer of the backup software/device... this is not an Apple or iTunes issue.

  • Using network file share with iPhoto 08

    Hello all: I am a new "switcher". My home network consists of a windows machine and my new imac, with a linux file server which I use to store all data files including my family's extensive photo library.
    Back in windows land I was able to just point Picassa to the photo directory on my server and in this way all computers could share the same photo files.
    I need to figure out how to do this with iPhoto 08. When I tried doing this yesterday, iPhoto wanted to copy over to my imac all our photos from the server. This is not exceptable.
    I am able to do a similar thing with iTunes, where all our music lives on our linux server, but each computer can see and use the files from the server.
    Thanks very much for the hand-holding, Chris.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
    Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. It will create an alias to the Original file, a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version.
    However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
    Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.

  • Using Places and Faces with iPhoto and Aperture 3

    I have been a long time user of iPhoto, but have recently moved to +Aperture 3+ to use its better editing functionality. Initially I just imported photos for editing in +Aperture 3+.
    I recently decided to "share" the previews with iPhoto and leaving the iPhoto Library in its current location.
    Q. I had assumed that any editing in Aperture would modify the image in the +iPhoto library+. Is this the case or are they duplicates in each separate libraries?
    Q. Aperture also seems to offer easier assigning of Places and/or Faces but this is not being reflected in the +iPhoto library+. Again are these metadata changes not being carries across to the +iPhoto Library+?
    Q. Is there any way to sync and changes from one library to the other?
    I would be grateful for any advice as to how the setup should be altered before I get in a complete muddle.
    Thanks in anticipation.

    Aperture and iPhoto are entirely different applications that work in very different ways.
    The only communication between the two is as follows:
    Aperture is able to parse the iPhoto Library to allow it to import the contents while stacking the Originals and Modifeid versions, preserving metadata and so forth.
    Aperture can share its Previews with the iLife apps, including iPhoto.
    That's it.
    So, specifically, what interaction there is between the two is designed to facilitate migration from iPhoto to the more powerful app. After that, iPhoto has exactly the same relationship to the Aperture Library as, say, Pages or iMovie.
    iPhoto has no knowledge of, and knows nothing of how the Aperture Library works. It cannot read the Aperture library.
    Q. I had assumed that any editing in Aperture would modify the image in the iPhoto library. Is this the case or are they duplicates in each separate libraries?
    This is not the case.
    a: Aperture is designed for a non-destructive workflow and won't change any file anywhere, anytime.
    b: You seem to have confused Aperture with an Editor like Photoshop.
    It's not an adjunct to iPhoto, it's a complete replacement for it - and then some.
    Q. Aperture also seems to offer easier assigning of Places and/or Faces but this is not being reflected in the iPhoto library. Again are these metadata changes not being carries across to the +iPhoto Library+?
    No. See above.
    Q. Is there any way to sync and changes from one library to the other?
    No.
    I would be grateful for any advice as to how the setup should be altered before I get in a complete muddle.
    Pick one or the other to use. They both do the same job, just Aperture is a whole lot more powerful.

  • Copy iphoto 6 library intact to separate laptop with iphoto 8?

    This is my first post, hopefully not a stupid one. I have an imac g5 with 17,000 photos in my iphoto 6 database. photos are totally categorized into hundreds of separte folders for real estate purposes. I want to buy a new macbook pro with iphoto 8. Is there a way to direct copy from my existing computer iphoto files to the new computer iphoto?,,, still keeping all files intact and separate. Basically I want to create an exact duplicate without affecting my original iphoto library.(which took 5 years to accumulate and is priceless to my business) ?
    thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Yes, just copy the iPhoto LIbrary folder intact into the Pictures folder on your new MacBook Pro. Launch iPhoto and it will convert the library to iPhoto 8. That's all that needs to be done.
    However, before running iPhoto 8 on the library for the first time I'ddownload and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name in the owner section and Staff in the group section. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. This will assure that the ownership of the folder and enclosed files have been set to the new owner, etc. It's just a precaution.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Using Panorama Maker 4 with iPhoto troubles...

    I searched and could not find anything so i decided to post. I wanted to mess around with Panorama Maker so i took a couple pics of my room and imported them into my iPhoto. After i did so, i opened up Panorama Maker and i couldn't find any of the photos i imported. I couldn't even find the iPhoto library. For some reason it's hidden or something.
    I guess I have a few questions, how do I create a folder of my imported pictures separate from my iPhoto library so I can open them in Panorama? And how, if there's any way, can I view the iPhoto folder in Panorama? Or if there's something else i should be doing please let me know!?

    Hi, ProjektDM. Your iPhoto Library's contents are intentionally made inaccessible to other applications, to prevent you from corrupting the library database by tinkering with the pictures in it. So if you want to assemble pictures into a panorama outside of iPhoto, you'll need to do either of two things: a) don't import them into iPhoto before doing so, or b) after importing them into iPhoto, export copies of them to the desktop or a folder on the desktop, and work on the copies. After your panorama is finished, you can import that into iPhoto if you like.
    With most cameras (not including most Canon cameras), you can easily copy pictures from your camera or memory card onto your computer without importing them into iPhoto or any other application. If iPhoto opens automatically whenever you connect the camera or card reader to your Mac, simply quit iPhoto before importing the pictures. Then drag-copy the pictures from the card to a new folder on your desktop. The Import... command in iPhoto's File menu can be used to import the pictures into iPhoto later.
    To export pictures from iPhoto to a folder on the desktop, simply drag the image thumbnails from the iPhoto window to the folder (of course you'll have to leave enough of the desktop exposed so you can see the folder). Or, select the pictures you want to export and use the Export... command in iPhoto's File menu.

  • HT1850 problem when duplicating a book with iPhoto.

    When I try to duplicate a book with iPhoto, only 4 pages out for 46 pages gets duplicated. I cannot duplicate the entire book.

    Thanks, I use iPhoto 11 v 9.4.1 (701.67).
    I first select the book I wish to duplicate and then I tried control click / duplicate. Also select photo in the menu then duplicate. Then the short cut command D but it doesn't work properly either ways.
    However, I just found out after I wrote this post that other books or cards are duplicating without any problem at all.
    I only have this problem with my lasted book.
    Thank you very much

  • After downloading 24.5.0 I get frequent "stalling" and hanging of Thunderbird, on two separate computers with McAfee

    While reading mail that has already downloaded, Thunderbird seems to stall when selecting a new message, and I get a message from Windows at the top of the screen telling me that Thunderbird is not responding. If I wait a couple minutes this clears up and I can click on the next message. I can work normally for a while, then it will hang a few times, then it clears up for a while. Windows 7, 64-bit. Happens on two different computers with different apps running, different anti-virus packages, probably not all the settings are identical.

    First, thanks for offering to help.
    Anti-Virus Related Issues
    1. McAfee AntiVirus Plus doesn't create an extension called McAfee Anti-Spam Thunderbird Extension in Tools | Addons | Extensions as noted in the web article. Nothing there. It does create two other plugins in Tools | Addons | Plugins. One is called McAfee Security Center and the other is called McAfee Virtual Technician. Disabling either had no impact upon mail performance. Yes, I closed the application and restarted it after turning the plugins off to be sure that they weren't still running.
    2. Disabling attachment scanning didn't seem to have any impact, but I may have to wait until I get some significant attachments to tell for sure on that.
    Routine Sysadmin Chores:
    1. Yes, using POP. One computer does not remove mail from the server, the other does, daily. There is no significant build up of old mail on the server. Also, nothing changed in this regard from before installing 24.5.0.
    2. I do archive mail, but mostly I clean out the folders. There is not a big accumulation of email in folders, particularly on the machine running McAfee. Regardless, this hasn't changed since I installed 24.5.0.
    3. I empty junk and spam folders several times a day on whichever computer is being used, and compact regularly. There is no build up in those folders.
    On the bright side, both systems seem to be doing better with mail this morning, before doing anything at all to try and fix the problem. I am going to let this sit for a few days and see how it performs.

  • Calendar Server 3.5: Problem using user's ID with uniuser -mod command

    When there are two users who have the same Common Name (CN) in LDAP but
    different User ID's (uid
    field), I have a problem using the uid
    field as an argument to
    uniuser -mod in Netscape Calendar
    Server (NCS) 3.5. For example, there may be two users, User1 and User2, who
    both have the CN "John Smith."<BR>
    <P>
    <B>User1</B>
    uid: jsmith2
    sn: Smith
    givenname: John
    nscalxitemid: 10001:00314
    <B>User2</B>
    uid: jsmith
    sn: Smith
    givenname: John
    nscalxitemid: 10001:00213
    <P>
    Let's say I want to change the value for nsCalOrgUnit2
    for User1 to "jsmith." In NCS 4.0,
    I can specify the uid as
    an argument to uniuser -mod
    . However, in NCS 3.5, if I specify the
    uid as an argument to
    uniuser -mod, the entry
    for the user does not get changed.<BR>
    <P>
    <B>Calendar Server 4.0</B><BR>
    <P>
    %uniuser -mod "ID=00314" -m "OU2=jsmith/OU3=People" -n 10001
    <BR>
    uniuser: modified "Smith, John"<BR>
    <P>
    (The LDAP entry for User1 also reflects this change.)
    <P>
    <B>Calendar Server 3.5</B><BR>
    <P>
    %uniuser -mod "ID=00314" "OU2=jsmith/OU3=People" 10001
    <BR>
    uniuser: no need to modify "Smith,John"<BR>
    <P>
    (The LDAP entry for User1 does not reflect the change.)<BR>
    <P>
    %uniuser -mod "S=Smith/G=John/ID=00314" "OU2=jsmith/OU3=People"
    10001<BR>
    uniuser: no need to modify "Smith,John"<BR>
    <P>
    (The LDAP entry for User1 does not reflect the change.)<BR>
    <P>
    If I use the command uniuser -mod "S=Smith/G=John"
    "OU2=jsmith/OU3=People" 10001
    in NCS 3.5, the script will change the entry of the first "John Smith" in the
    database and will cause the LDAP entry for this user to be updated as well.
    However, the entry modified may or may not be the correct one. So, in
    NCS 3.5, is there a way to specify a particular uid
    to ensure that the correct LDAP entry
    is modified?
    <P>
    To modify a user's information using the uid
    field in Calendar Server 3.5, change
    the user.ini file. The
    following steps show how to change a user's information by modifying the
    .ini file:<BR>
    <P>
    <OL>
    <LI>Open the user.ini
    file, which is in the path /users/unison/misc/user.ini
    <P>
    <LI>Add a section containing the desired changes. For example,<BR>
    <P>
    [Test]<BR>
    OU2 = jsmith<BR>
    OU3 = People<BR>
    <P>
    <LI>Run uniuser with
    the following options:<BR>
    <P>
    % uniuser -mod "ID=00314" -s Test 10001
    </OL>

    It turns out to be a problem with the user Keychain. It has some weird entry that was sending the wrong password. I delete all entries to the server and that corrected the problem

  • Is it possible to use multiple hard drives with iphoto?

    I am pretty new to Mac's so bear with me, I used to use multiple hard drives on my pc with my photos seperated by catagory in different hard drives. Is it possible to run iphoto with multiple hard drives without the photos loading onto my Imac? If so, How do I set it up. I have tried importing to a external drive, but when I check the file path of the photos it shows my Imac hd in the address. I seriously dont know why I cant just add the external hard drive as a library and have Iphoto work, Help

    There are instructions - and not the caveats - on how to do what you want below.
    However, you'e not quite grasping iPhoto:
    I used to use multiple hard drives on my pc with my photos seperated by catagory in different hard drives.
    When you do this, you're using the Finder (or file manager) to categorise the photos. All well and good, but why? That's exactly iPhoto's job. iPhoto is a database designed to help you manage your pics - including categorising them.
    Anyway:
    *How to do it:*
    Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
    *What Happens:*
    Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
    *Some things to consider:*
    1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
    4. *Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.*
    My own opinion:
    I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers
    If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    *For Users of 10.5 and later*
    You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and later* ...
    Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
    To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
    This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
    If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
    If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
    *If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
    For users of 10.6 and later:
    You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
    For Users of 10.4 and later:
    Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    If you really want to spread your photos across volumes like this, Aperture would be a better fit.

  • Using Sony GPS-CS1 with iPhoto 9

    Hello all
    Just a query, if anyone has any tips for using a Sony GPS-CS1 with iPhoto 9?
    I have several files I would like to sync with images. I would also like to create the tracks that the unit does on a map as well?
    I have recently been using the bootcamp method with windows but find this a pain as relly like using iPhoto which is where my library is.
    I would appreciate any help anyone can give on using this technology.
    Thanks in advance
    Stephen

    looking at their web page I see no Mac support. If the device creates a standard format GPS data file then HoudahGeo - http://www.houdah.com/houdahGeo/ - would be able to associate the GPS data with the photos
    for a map you must create a book - or use an external program like Google Earth exporting the photos for use with it
