Problem using migration assistant to transfer from iBook G4 to new Macbook

This is probably a very simple issue but I am a luddite. I can connect the old iBook and new MacBook by firewire and commence the migration assistant process. However, towards the end of the transfer I get a message saying that there has been a problem and I need to check all connections. The Macbook is wirelessly online (via Time Capsule) but the iBook is not online - is this the problem? Or is it that the iBook software (OS 10.3.9) is out of date?

You're lucky it isn't working. I would not use MA. You may end up overwriting Intel files with PPC files causing your computer to become dysfunctional. Instead connect them via Firewire. Boot the iBook into Target Disk Mode and the MacBook normally. The iBook's drive should appear on the MacBooks Desktop. You can then manually transfer your files. The following will help you with what you need to copy:
Folders You Can Move to Your new Mac
From the Home folder copy the contents of Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites.
In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
If you want cookies:
/Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
/Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
For FireFox:
/Home/Library/Applications Support/FireFox
/Home/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist

  • I used Migration Assistant to transfer from my VAIO Sony computer. I can't find any of my photos or most of my music.

I used Migration Assistant to transfer from my VAIO Sony computer to my IMac. I can't find any of my photos or most of my music. I suspect it is in a folder called VAIO  in Finder under Shared but it wants a password to open it that I dont have. I never had a password on the Sony computer and I have tried all the ones I can think of.
    Any suggestions.

  • I used Migration Assistant to transfer from MBP to Mac Mini. Documents cannot be "seen" or "found". Stumped!

I used Migration Assistant to transfer from MBP (Leopard OSX 10.6.8) to Mac Mini (Lion OSX 10.7). Documents cannot be "seen" or "found". Ditto Music , movies, and pictures.Stumped!

System Preferences/Users & Groups shows you the various user accounts you have.
Look at your hard drive in the Finder sidebar. You should see Applications, Library, System, and Users. If you look in Users you will see a Shared folder. From the user Migration Assistant created, find the iTunes folder and drag it to Shared. Log out and log in using your normal user account, go to the same place and copy it to Music in your normal user account. Another option is to leave it in shared so any user can access it. You will have to tell iTunes where to find the music by going to iTunes/Preferences/Advanced.

  • Use migration assistant to transfer from old HD (10.4) to new HD (10.6) to new

    Hello,
I am helping a friend replace a failing HD on her Macbook (mid 2007, Intel, runnung 10.4 tiger). the hard drive has not failed yet, but we cannot repair permissions and cannot repair the disk using disk utility or disk Warrior. At the genius bar the utility they used showed a couple of bad blocks and lots of error and so we do believe the drive will fail sooner or later.
I have purchased a new hard drive to put in the Macbook and would like to install 10.6 Snow Leopard on the new drive.
My question is this, can I put the old hard drive that has not yet failed into an external enclosure (USB 2, not Firewire)
and then use migration assistant as I am installing the new system to move all her stuff over (her account, files, apps, settings)?
I have several other computers at my disposal and originally I had planned on copying her home folder to another
external drive hooked up to my powerbook, then launch the Macbook with ne drive in target mode and just drag the
home folder to its place after the installation. But she has some games and apps that she might lose if i do this.

Ok on first reboot & putting dome info in Accept the Mogration Assistant invite, then here's the 3 screens & choices, (though this is from Lion/10.7, yours should be close...

  • I began using Migration assistant to transfer from my PC to my Mac but it does not let me continue past selecting items to migrate

I began using the migration assistant. It downloaded fine on my PC, and I was able to follow the steps on the apple website, but it will not let me continue past selecting which items to migrate on my Mac. However, if I try to exit out of the window it says migration in progress do not close. There is not a bar to measure the progress of the migration on either the PC or Mac like the instructions say there will be.

  • Migrating from ibook tiger to new macbook leopard

I have just bght a new macbook running leopard.. I only really have mail/photos/email/music on my old ibook running tiger. I started up the new macbook (160g HD) conected ethernet to old ibook. Using migration assistant it was all going well untill new macbook kept saying "connection lost, check connection" etc. I turned off and on, and "resumed migration", when i returned i had an error msg on old ibook saying "migration problems, may not have been comleted".. Anyway, I only have an old 60g ibook, but when i resytart my macbook it gives me all the welcome movie, asks where i am etc, then it gets to the point in migration assistant when it shows my old computers "Files", "network settings", and "applications" it shows 10kb next to network settings, but next to the other two it says "calculating" and then after about 5mins the screen goes grey and i get the spinning wheel that never stops. The old ibook say "new computer is ready" with the moving line bar.. also the "space available" on new macbook is down to 89.9gig, even though i only have about 30gig of files etc to be brought across.. I tried this over wireless network as well but same thing happened.
1)should i reinstall everything on new macbook and start again
2)have i installed everything twice without knowing it (i have tried the process a few times by turing new macbook on and off

If I do that will my library be accessable on the macbook without the external hard drive?

  • Which files do I transfer from external drive to new MacBook Pro?

    Hi there,
My hard drive went bad on my MacBook Pro, but fortunately I did a weekly backup.
Unfortunately, it was not a Cloned back up or a Time Machine backup, so I can't seem to be able to use the Migration Assistant to transfer my files to my new MacBook Pro.
Is there a list of files that I should make sure to copy over?
I know that I need to copy my apps that aren't already native to Mavericks.  Also, most of the files in my User Folder.  Is it wise to copy the entire library in the User Folder, or should I select individual files and folders?  Is there anything else I should look for?
If there is a step by step tutorial on this, and I have somehow missed it, please point me on my way.
    Thanks for any help.

Is it a bad idea to copy things to the library (the one that is located at  macintosh hd/library)?
One thing is for sure...I'll be switching to Time Machine or CCC...this is taking a looooong time.
    So, any ideas out there?
It is too late, but either a bootable clone (I use SuperDuper!) or a Time Machine backup would have made the transition smooth.
I do not know of any "cookbook" approach to help you.
I think I would have reinstalled OS X 10.9.4 and then moved all my data files. I do not know what settings, files, etc. would need to be moved.

  • I'm trying to use migration assistant to transfer applications from my imac to macbook. Using either a firewire or network, as I'm waiting to select items to migrate, I receive an error message that "the application quit unexpectedly". My imac is newer.

I'm trying to use migration assistant to transfer applications from my newer imac to an older macbook (10.5.8).  I keep getting an error message "application quit unexpectedly" as I'm waiting to select the items to migrate.  I've tried using a firewire cable as well as just a network connection.
    Thank you.

    Here is some information:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889
It mentions that migration is not supported with 10.4; now you said you have 10.5 - it may be the same problem. Besides, migration assistant will recognize an older system and move apps etc. over to a newer system - I'm not sure it will do the same thing in reverse.
And, there are a couple more problems: one is that your newer versions may not be backwards compatible with the old 10.5 and the second is that is you are trying to copy apps so you can use them on both, it most likely violates the SLA (unless you purchased them on MAS).
So, if none of those two apply, I'd simply try target disk mode (without the assistant) and drag over the apps.

  • I used migration assistant to transfer files from my old compaq laptop to MBP but I have no idea where they are??

I used migration assistant to transfer files from my old compaq to Macbook pro but I don't know where to find all my pictures and music in the MBP. Where do they go?

I have now migrated my stuff again - I think the problem is that I clicked skip this user on previous attempts. Now I have 4 different users, one has my photos, one has my music and another has my documents as well as the one that is my usual one. I just need to figure out how to get the pics and music into the one I'm using day-to-day and I'll be sorted.

  • Trying to use Migration Assistant to restore from Time Machine backup but it keeps "Looking for other computers..."

    Hi!
I just bought a new MacBook Pro 15" and I wanted to transfer my old files from a previous Time Machine backup done with my old MacBook Pro 15".
Both computers have Mac OS X 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion) installed.
I always used Migration Assistant without any problem to accomplish this task, but now I don't know why it's stuck on a screen displaying "Looking for other computers...". What? What computer? I'm trying to restore from a Time Machine backup on an external hard drive, so I don't understand what computer it is looking for.
Do you have any idea to solve the problem?
    Thanks!

Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the page that opens.
Select the System keychain in the list of keychains in the sidebar of the window. If you don't see the list, click the down-arrow icon below the sidebar.
Then select Passwords in the Category list at lower left. Click the Kind heading in the list of keychain items to arrange it by Kind.
Locate the AirPort Disk Password with the name of your Time Capsule. Double-click the item and check the box marked Show Password in the inspector window that opens. You'll be prompted for the administrator login password. Make a note of the AirPort password, then close the inspector window and delete the item.
Also delete any other AirPort DIsk Password items for that same Time Capsule, which may have had a different name in the past.
Quit Keychain Access and try again to back up.
