Problem using the clone stamp tool in cs6 64 bit

I am trying to use the clone stamp tool, however each time I alt click  on a PC runing system 7- 64 bit and try to clone an area, I get a window stating that I have not defined an area. Alt clicking again does not solve the problem. I work in a computer lab and this option works fine on our Macs using option click in PS CS6.

If »Show Overlay« is checked in the Clone Source Panel is the cursor showing the source imagery?
Could you please post a screenshot with the pertinent Panels visible?

Are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift/ctrl-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, cleaning caches, font validation, etc.)?

  • "Could not use the clone stamp tool because of a program error". How to fix this fault?

When I try to use the Clone Stamp Tool I am met with the message shown above. I have tried in all the ways I could find to beat this: different photos, switched the computer off and on again, run a de-bugging program through it (Advanced System Care 5 Pro) and Microsoft's own stuff. The problem exists solidly and, without one of its most important picture repair tools Photoshop is pretty much useless.
I have just set this new Photoshop Elements 10 program up on my Windows 7 (64) laptop. I have plenty of memory and a large enough hard drive; the machine is fairly new, stable and does not usually suffer from programming problems. I have found nothing on any of the Adobe Forums, or in other sites, to give me a hint as to what has caused the problem other than a bad program disk. My first conclusion was that I should reinstall the program, but it appears that I will then lose one of my two registration rights, that strikes me as being ridiculous as reinstallation is surely the most logical thing to do with a potentially faulty program disk! But I would have to uninstall to reinstall, and that's when the the second registration cuts in I am advised. I have tried every way I can think of to beat this to no avail. I'll be truly grateful if someone can help me out on this. Thank you!

Thanks guys! I'm afraid that I'm still not sure: I've been told that uninstalling - after of course deactivating - amounts to a life gone... Yet according to the set of licence rules Adobe has, you're allowed to copy programs in a mirror image which, of course, would be used for a clean wipe - and surely that contradicts their set of rules? The rules seem to imply that that would be okay: no life lost. My concern is that through no fault of my own I have what appears to be a duff program; it's out of warranty now (my fault - I didn't install it until I could buy a more heavy-duty laptop). If the rule is "two-strikes-and-your-out, then I lose my last reactivation after THIS installation. I will get in touch with Adobe - but I live in the UK, and therein lies the problem: the equivalent of $39 dollars for the chat and whatever else it might cost is off-putting to me I'm afraid. If I could find out whether or not Adobe has a patch or something I would be a lot more happy about it all - the reinstallation after all may NOT cure the problem and I'd be stuck with a bunch of coffee cup coasters! Hey, ho...

  • Program error when trying to use the clone stamp tool - PSE 8

When trying to use the CLONE STAMP TOOL, getting the following:  "Could not use the clone stamp tool because of a program error".
Runnng PSE 8 on Windows XP/SP3.  I purchased the key to have a full version, versus the 'trial version'.  I also have Photo Essentials 3 installed and have used it without any problems.
    Any suggestions?

    I figured it out - it was ID 10 T error...ugh.
Was following along in a book and blindly did what it said....was forgetting to hit the 'alt' key when first defining the area to clone....
However, it was kind of a confusing error message - something like "clone area not defined" would be more of a help.
    thanks.

  • Could not use the clone stamp tool because the area to clone has not been defined

Freshly installed Elements 10.  Can not use the option-mouse click to define an area for the clone stamp.  The error I get is:
Could not use the clone stamp tool because the area to clone has not been defined (option-click to define a source point).
New Mac Mini.  Had the same problems in Elements 9 so I installed the 10 trial.  Is this a key binding error?  Did not have this issue with Elements 9 on my Mac Air or my Windows 7 system.
I'm not a newbie and know how to use the clone tool.  I won't say I'm an expert so if it's something related to layers please throw out some ideas.

This problem came back up.  I hadn't used PSE since last November and was frustrated to run into it again.  I don't think it's a layers issue afterall.
I use a wireless keyboard and mouse on Mini and mouse on Air, although keyboard for Air is upstairs at a desk with monitor for occasional use.  Regardless blue tooth is on for these devices.  Problem exists.  Turn bluetooth off on Air and the problem is gone.  It must be related to option key when bluetooth is on, I guess some different mapping.  Even when I have bluetooth on and try to use Option key on the Air keyboard it does not work.
So now where do I look for configs to check?

  • In Photoshop 2014 how do you use the clone stamp tool and keep the image panel from moving

I don't quite know how to use the clone stamp tool in the Photoshop 2014 version.  When I click on the clone stamp it creates a duplicate of the image and it moves around and I can not apply the clone stamp to the area I want to correct.  How do you lock it down to keep it from moving?

    Hi Smoothery4501,
The Photoshop clone stamp tool allows you to copy one area of an image and copy it onto another area.
Click on the clone stamp tool then press the alt key on the keyboard and click on the image to define a source point.

  • When using the clone stamp tool and press the alt key layer just moves

when using the clone stamp tool and press the alt key to set a point it seem to create a new layer and just moves the layer arround. I can not get the clone to now work. what did I do?

Open the Clone Source panel. I think you'll find the Clipped option is disabled. If so, enable it.

Could not use the clone stamp tool because the area to clone has not been defined (option-click to define a source point). this is what shows up in the command box when ever I click to start to pick the spot i want to use as the clone. makes my cloning tool useless. can any one help? I have reset the tools restrted my computer. i am at a loss...

Are you working with more than one layer?  If you are working with multiple layers it makes a difference when selecting source spot and then trying to clone to a different layer.  I find that I have to be sure I am selecting the corresponding layers for source and then for application when working within multiple layers.
At least for me this is the case when getting that type of message.  I am very new to this program though, so maybe someone else has a more concise answer for you.
Good luck and write again if this doesn't help.

  • "Could not use the clone stamp because the area to clone has not been defined (Alt-click to define a source point)".

Few users access our Photoshop through Citrix on a mac but use a Windows 7 platform once they're in Citrix.  They're all having issues using the Clone Stamp tool.  Get the error "Could not use the clone stamp because the area to clone has not been defined (Alt-click to define a source point)". We've reset the clone stamp tool, reset all the tools, and reset the preferences. We've made sure that we're in All Layers.  Nothing seems to be working.  None of the other forums helped either.  Adobe support is no help either.
    Thanks,
    Moe.

Did you check with Citrix support?  Did you try both of the Alt keys.

  • When I try to use the clone stamp another layer of my picture is copied on the photo I'm working on.  Is this a defect or is there a tool I can use to stop it and return to normal usage of the clone stamp?

The "Sample Field" letters are very dim.  After punching several times the right click revels "Clone stamp mode".  The next little circle has a line through it and after several right clicks, it says: "turn on to ignore adjustment layers when cloning,"  Despite this I cannot get any kind of a response to change any of the existing entries.  Bob

My Photoshop CS 5 has some strange actions when I copy a portion of a photo using the clone stamp  to transfer to another part of the image. It carries the entire layer (not just the stamps selection) across the screen and I cannot place it where I need to. It appears as if I selected the entire layer on purpose (which I did not)
The below items appeared when I opened Photoshop CS 5:
“Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver and has temporarily disabled G & U enhancements. Check the video card malfunctions website for latest software. GPU enhancements can be enabled in the performance panel of preferences.”
(I believe this started after the automatically updated Windows was applied. It was coincident with the before mentioned problem . . . but I don’t really know if it had anything to do with it. )

For the Clone Stamp problem, check the Clone Source panel and Clipped is probably unchecked.
If so, check Clipped and see if that makes a difference.
    (Window>Clone Source)
As to the video card problem:
Which version of windows are you using?
What is the make and model of your graphics card?
Do you know which update windows installed?

If a tool is acting up, one suggestion is to reset the tool.
Ctrl-click on the clone tool icon in the Options bar and select Reset Tool.

  • Clone Stamp Tool in CS6 Will Not Work on Tiff Files

All of a sudden the Clone Stamp Tool does not work when working on a tif file. Yes I get the Circle with + sign when I press the ALT Key but tool will not clone.

    Hi Trevor!
I found out that it affects all file extensions.  Files were created after adjustments in Bridge. Layer is not locked. Opacity is at 46. Now as I reviewed your answer, I was looking at a FAQ about the same thing. Truthfully I did not know that you could reset tools.
I found out how to reset the CSTool and voila!!! Now works fine.
    Thanks for the advice...
