Problem using Time Capsule as Router

I just purchased an Airport Time.Capsule.802.11AC 2TB router for my home, which for the last year worked happily with a an inexpensive router.  My home system is reasonably complex, with a guest house with an Airport Express used as an wireless access point, and and Airport used in another part of the house.  Both the Express and Airport extend the network (and have done so in the past).
Since installing the Time Capsule 2 days ago, I have had no end of problems, first with getting devices to connect wirelessly;  I seem to have (generally) solved this problem by deleting the old wireless details and entering the new wireless access details (even though the access point name and password remains the same).
Still, problems plague me.   The Airport seems to intermittently report that it cannot extend the network;   internet access speeds are sometimes slow or non existent (last night, download speed was 2MB/S, upload speeds noon existent).   I suspect this must be because of some conflict within my system: I use a cable modem, and right now all wireless clients gain access via DHCP.
I've attached my 'settings' for the router.
Is there a setting which is obviously out of place, or some other idea as to how to debug?  I wonder if the router is using a new wireless protocol what older iPads/laptops/etc cannot speak to as quickly, but dismissed that as somewhat illogical.

How can I determine if it is a firmware fault?
Because you test precisely for where the fault is..
To do that you measure local lan speeds, connectivity and reliability using ethernet and wireless.
And then do the same with WAN.. you will discover where the problem exists.. if it is wan speed or drop out then you can be very sure it is WAN bugs.
This is as I stated an issue with the AC model.. and all the firmware seem to be affected but you should be on 7.7.3 as the earlier ones are not secure.
Why would Apple ever release such a device with a known fault?
The following is pure speculation .. and might get deleted.. !!
Why did apple release a bad update for iphone 6?? Lack of testing.

Why do they produce phones that bend? Lack of testing.
http://www.macrumors.com/2014/09/25/apple-responds-to-bending-issues/
This is more typical apple response .. ie in normal usage they are fine. ie it is end users that are at fault. Should not wear tight pants.
In networking there are huge numbers of products in the marketplace. To get reasonable products to market you need to test vigorously and update continually until you find all the bugs.. Since Apple released the AC model there has been two firmware updates.. one on the day of release.. and one recently with the ssh bug.. (one other was withdrawn after a few days.. as typical it caused more problems than it fixed.. which is lack of testing). For a new leading edge product this is totally inadequate. But I am sure it worked fine on the two different cable modems they tested it on.. and 3 different dsl modems and 2 different fibre setups.. unfortunately there are thousands upon thousands of modems and routers out there. A large beta program is required.. but Apple could not do that as it would be releasing hardware without marketing fanfare.
I personally have these issues with the Airport Extreme and Time Capsule on my ADSL.. it simply does not work reliably. No other router I have tested fails.  I have tested lots.. but the Apple cannot maintain a pppoe connection to ISP equipment. All other routers can. For some it works perfectly.. for some it doesn't work at all.. for me it drops out at 2min intervals. It is simply unsuited to the task. Find another way to use it .. or return it. Clearly they don't get enough returns to believe the issue is that big.
In the forum we deal with it every day.. eg today.
ISP Speed issue after installing TC
Just do a search for SB6121 or SB6141 which seem particularly prone to the problem.

  • How to use Time capsule as Router and link to a Receiver

    Hello
I'm currently using a Time capsule as WLAN Router. The plan is that I'm attaching My NAS via Ethernet LAN to the Time capsule. Time capsule will be linked via the Ethernet LAN cable to My Receiver so that I can Listen My Music over My home loudspeakers.
Can anybody Tell me whether described will work? If yes, are there any setitings in the Air Port Utility I have to consider to make everything work?
    Thank you!

The TC is not a streaming device.. it is merely a hard disk mounted inside a router.
That means My Receiver.. whatever that happens to be.. has to be a media device that can play from a network file store.. So there is no settings in Airport utility.. because the TC is too dumb to need to know anything.
BTW the TC is a bad place to store files, as it has no way to back itself up.

  • I'd like to use Time Capsule as Router and remove D-Link Router.  Is that what it's designed for?

I currently use a D-Link Router and also have a 1st generation time capsule as use as a back up device.  I've just purchased a new 2TB Time Capsule and would like to use it as my primary "only" router just after my cable modem, it that there primary design?
Currently I have a Cable modem with a Static IP address and then on the D-Link I've configured my NAS, Power Mac, iMac and Computers with all there own IP address.  I've looked on the Time Capsule I have hooked up now and I'm not sure if the TC will let me do that.
I really should of researched before, but I'd just bought a mini mac with lion server and it talked about the ease of using TC with it and purchased before researching...

I've just purchased a new 2TB Time Capsule and would like to use it as my primary "only" router just after my cable modem, it that there primary design?
Yes, the Time Capsule is designed to connect directly to a modem.
on the D-Link I've configured my NAS, Power Mac, iMac and Computers with all there own IP address
You can set up "static" IP addresses for each of your network devices....IF....the Time Capsule is set up to be the "main"' router on the network.
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Click the DHCP tab below the icons
The DHCP Reservations box will allow to you assign a specific IP address based on the MAC address or AirPort ID of each device.
Devices could be assigned IP addresses in the 10.0.1.x range or 192.168.1.x range depending on your preference.

  • Problems using time capsule to extend wireless network

    Hi all,
For some months I had to move to Germany for work (I'm from Italy, sorry for my English).
I am sharing internet with some other people, the wi-fi router is in their apartment, so basically I don't have access.
As the signal is strong enough only in one room I would like to use my time capsule to extend it also in the other rooms.
But when I try to extend it, my macbook pro connects to the network I would like to extend and the time capsule is not seen anymore.
To see the time capsule again in the airport utility i have to reset it to factory default.
    Do you have any idea?
The wireless network is WPA2 protected, the provider is the German "Unity Media".

As the signal is strong enough only in one room I would like to use my time capsule to extend it also in the other rooms.
Apple's "extend" feature will only work if the Time Capsule is "extending" the wireless signal from another Apple wireless router. In other words, the "extend" feature is not compatible with wireless routers from other manufacturers.
You will need to connect the Time Capsule to the wireless router using a wired Ethernet connection.  Connect from one of the LAN <-> ports on the wireless router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.  Then, you can configure the Time Capsule to provide a separate wireless network for your use.

  • Should I use time capsule as router, or use the one from ISP?

I have a Sagecom wireless modem/router provided by my ISP (Bell). I currently have Time Capsule set as a bridge on my network and connects directly to my modem by ethernet. Would there be any advantage to using my Time Capsule as my wireless router instead of my Sagecom modem?
Would it have more range, or be faster, or backup faster?

I have the latest 3TB time capsule (got it about 3 weeks ago). I will admit I have no info on the Sagecom router. I did a Google search and found almost nothing. That being said, this is what I got from my network info:
      PHY Mode:          802.11n
      Channel:          11
      Country Code:          CA
      Network Type:          Infrastructure
      Security:          WPA2 Personal
      Signal / Noise:          -35 dBm / -87 dBm
      Transmit Rate:          195
      MCS Index:          23
I am running a iMac that is one month old.
Where can I get more info?

  • Problems using Time Capsule in mixed Network.

My NAS started to play up so I invested in an Apple Timecapsule as we have several Macs and the beast is supposed to support other OS's, including Linux and Windows.
Mac side words like a dream. Mr Apple's stuff generally does in my experience.
I can mount the disk in Linux (Ubuntu) but the operation is most odd. I can copy files from my Linux machine to the Time Capsule but not all types of file can be "seen" by my Mac. In particular, jpg files don't show up at the Mac end. They do show as being there to Linux.
I've not tried Windows yet, that gets minimal use here.
Has anyone mastered using a Timecapsule as a simple NAS under Linux and can offer some tips, please?
I've pretty well Googled this to death, there are conflicting versions of what are claimed to be working fstab entries (including the one I'm using) but no examples of what I am observing.
    This is my fstab entry:
    //<ip_address>/Data/Files  /media/macnas  cifs   uid=brian,credentials=/home/brian/<credentials_file>,iocharset=utf8,sec=ntlm   0       0
The aim is to use the Time capsule as a back disk for my Linux machines as well as my Macs.
    Any assistance greatly appreciated.
    Brian
PS: Previously I was using on of my Linux systems as a Time capsule server for my Macs, that was easy to get working in comparison going the other way!

What Mac OS are you running?
There can be some interesting issues with Mavericks.. it might simply have permissions wrong.
    Or the files are hidden.
See the commands in this thread might help.. since you seem to be a bit of Linux eggs spurt.

TC is really not suited to NAS duties. So good luck with backups on it.

  • Which modem when using time capsule as router

I need a modem to set up a wifi network with my time capsule , any recommendations ?  cheers

I think you would agree that a modem we might recommend would be of no value to you if you purchased that product and then found that your Internet Service Provider (ISP) did not support that model.
So perhaps, the "best" modem would a model that your ISP supports....and likely also provides.
If your ISP offers you a choice of modems, post back with the list and ask other users for their comments on those models.

  • Backup problem with Time Capsule over Router

    Hello fellas,
I am facing a back up problem with my TC(2TB) with Time machine. When I try to back up it gets stuck at "preparing backup". However when i directly connect to it via its own wifi, everything works like a charm. I even erased older back ups and created a new one. When I, however, switch back to the router setting (TC connected to a Router and me connecting over wifi) I still do see the erased backup on the right side. When I try accessing them, I get a black window where I should be seen a mirror of the desktop. I can manually (over Finder) add and erase files in the TC. The TC does pick IP and is active.
I did verify and repair the TC.(Permission tab was grey)
    OS 10.9.5
    TC version: 7.7.3
Hope you guys can help me.

Mavericks has a lot of issues with networking.. And it effects TM and the TC more than most things.
Apple finally fessed up there was some issues.
OS X Mavericks: Time Machine problems
Let me recommend you follow exactly the same list as in this thread.
I just updated Safari 7.1 and OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 now my Time Machine is not backing up and I don't know how to fix it.
In your situation there is a couple of other things to add.
Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only.
I am not sure how your router is handling ipv6 or bonjour for that matter.. both are necessary to have TM work.
    If that doesn't solve it..
Use Finder to force the connection to the TC to AFP protocol.
From top menu, Go, Connect to Server.
Type AFP://TCgenx.local (where you replace TCgenx with your nice new short name). local is the default domain in the TC and it can help to specify as your router is probably using a different domain.
Even better is to use the TC IP address.. but it has to be static.. so you will need to set it by dhcp reservation in the main router.
AFP://192.168.0.100 (replace with the actual TC IP you can get it from the summary screen in airport utility but must be static).
If you still have issues post back more details.
What router are you using make and model?
If it is not apple compatible it may simply never work.. some routers do not handle specific apple protocols like airplay or bonjour and this affects how it works with TM.

  • Using time capsule model A1409 and trying to use it as only backup. Already have Verizon wireless router. Do not know which cable port to use in back of time capsule. And also it is asking for password. Have tried all of mine and it will not work.

Want to us my time capsule model A1409  as only backup. 2 TB hard drive.
Already have Verizon wireless router. Do not want to use Time capsule as router, only back up for iMac.
Do not know which cable port to use in back of time capsule to Ethernet port back of my iMac.
And also it is asking for password for the server John Garland's Time Capsule so Time machine can access it..
Have tried all of passwords can think of and none work.
Held the reset button for one second on back of capsule and do not see if anything happened.
    What a conundrum.
Appreciate any help to get this working.
    Thanks,
    John R

I have a 2TB Timecapsule and really only use it for Time Machine backups. But the Wi-Fi side is used to sync my iPad at times.
    Mine is wiredup thus;
Eth cable from iMac to modem (not the WAN port should you have one),  then eth cable from modem to T/Cap in the WAN port (bottom port with an O sign above it)
I believe when its connected up you may have to set up a wireless network. Follow the instructions to set up Wi-Fi and Network
and then give it a password. The WiFi icon should appear in the menu bar where you can switch it on or off.
Its been sometime since I set it with the help of Apple Techs so I might be a bit rusty.

  • Can I use time capsule as an external disk only (not as a wireless router)

how can I use my time capsule as an external disk only. I have had problems with time capsule as a wifi router.

Sure.. but it is still a network drive and must use wireless or ethernet.. the best way is plugged into the main router in bridge mode.. but you can use it in secondary network.. although the setup is more complicated.
It is also less good than a simple external drive.. which is cheaper, faster and more reliable. Consider if the TC doesn't suit your needs get rid of it and opt for simple external drive.

I have an Airport Extreme as my router and am using time capsule to extend the network in my new house. My ISP is only providing me 4-5 ip addresses and wants me to set up my router to issue out new ip addresses for all my devices. How do I fix this?Help.
They said I need to change my settings to NAT settings. I haven't been able to figure out or find anything. I have also spoken to Apple Support on the phone for hours without being able to figure out how to do this ( i don't think he knew much either lol.) Please help me because I've got about 15-20 devices in my house that require to be connected to the internet and this is just making things ridiculously slow and painful for me.
    Thanks!

It is on DHCP & NAT under router mode yet my isp is still the one issuing ip addresses to my devices instead of the router issuing them

  • I already have a DSL gateway that is a wireless capable and is used as a router to set up my network. Do I have to use time capsule to connect to the internet, or can I use it to join my current network and use it as a backup disk?

Yes, you can connect to your current router using Ethernet (highly recommended) or wirelsss only.

  • Can I use time capsule with a ASUS (RT-N16)router?

I will use a router with vpn. Can I use time capsule with it? And if yes, how do I connect them?

There is no vpn built into the native firmware of N16 so I presume you are going to use third party.
Just plug in the TC and bridge it.. ie go to Internet tab of airport utility and select connection sharing off.
wireless then you will need to figure out.. you can setup roaming on 2.4ghz by using identical wireless name = ssid and security but lock both to different channels.. pick out of 1, 6, 11
In a PC network make sure you use the TC with a new name.. no spaces no special characters.. same with wireless. TC also restrict wireless on 2.4ghz to only 20mhz.. if you have the N16 set to 40mhz you will have to be extra careful with channels.. 40mhz will use up two channels and only one remains.. so your household will have filled the 2.4ghz.
Someone suggested you can turn off 2.4ghz in the TC by not naming it.. When I try that it kicks up an error that it has to be named. So perhaps someone else has a suggestion of how to turn off 2.4ghz.
You can turn off 5ghz by unchecking it. Seems mighty strange that you cannot turn off 2.4ghz but you can turn off 5ghz.

  • Can I use Time Capsule only as a WiFi backup disk w/out having to configure it as my main router?

I already have an Airport Extreme that works great. Can I use Time Capsule ONLY as a WiFi backup disk w/out having to configure it as my main router with my Internet modem?

Can I use Time Capsule ONLY as a WiFi backup disk w/out having to configure it as my main router with my Internet modem?
Yes, you have two options here, each with advantages and disadvantages.
Option 1...connect the Time Capsule to your AirPort Extreme using an Ethernet cable connection. Turn off the wireless on the Time Capsule since your AirPort Extreme is already providing wireless.
Advantages...easy to configure, you can backup either over wireless or plug directly into one of the Ethernet ports to backup large files 3-5 times faster than wireless.
Disadvantages...none, except it requires a wired Ethernet connection to the AirPort Extreme.
Option 2....configure the Time Capsule as a wireless only hard drive.
Advantage.....you can locate the Time Capsule anywhere you want as long as it can receive a good wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme.
Disadvantages....harder to configure, backups will occur only over wireless.

  • Can i use time capsule as the router with sky broadband

how do i use time capsule as the router. I contacted my internet provider  which is Sky who had no info other than to suggest trying a sky forum.

It depends on the type of modem they gave you.. and if you can bridge it.
I suspect you cannot use the TC in router mode with sky.. but tell us more.. if it is adsl and they accept pppoe then you can get it to work.. otherwise no.. just use the TC in bridge.
