Problem using Tomcat 4.1
I'm trying to establish connection with the database from JSP.When I'm running it's giving the following error
"oracle.jdbc.driver.Oracle.Driver class not found"
I'm using Tomcat 4.1 and database is Oracle 8i.I've already set the classpath."C:\oracle\ora92\jdbc\lib"(Oracle is intalled in C drive).
Kindly help me resolve this issue.

Tomcat does not use the system classpath.
As far as Tomcat is concerned the classpath for a web app is
1 - web-inf/classes
2 - jar files in web-inf/lib
3 - jar files in [TOMCAT]/shared/lib
4 - jar files in [TOMCAT]/common/lib
If you are going to be using Tomcat's connection pooling, you need the JDBC driver jar file in [TOMCAT]/common/lib
I would recommend you put the file ojdbc14.jar (or equivalent) in the [TOMCAT]/common/lib directory
Restart tomcat, and try again.

In my application we are using session variable to store the user access rights, and validating in all jsp pages. we are using resin 1.2.5 as servlet container. It is working fine.
we have an approach to port our application to tomcat instead of resin.
Now, while porting the session variables not retreived in the jsp pages.
I am struggling with this issue for the past one month, so please confirm me regarding tomcat supports session or not.--

Well, in my application, i have session variables, and it is working
fine. Except in one jsp page where each time I submit, a new made
Vector disappears.
But the others session attributes are still there (rights, user,
etc ...). -
Viewing Excel Files using Tomcat - Problem with caching
Hi all,
A small part of an application I'm writing has links to Excel files for users to view/download. I'm currently using Tomcat v5 as the web/app server and have some very simple code (an example is shown below) which calls the excel file.

This all works except but I'm having one big problem.
The xls file (file1.xls) is updated via a share on the server so each month, the xls file is overwritten with the same name but with different contents. I'm finding that when an update is made to the xls file and the user then attempts to view the new file in the browser they recieve only the old xls file. It's caching the xls file and I don't want it to. How can I fix this so that it automatically gives the user the new updated file.
The only way I've managed to get Tomcat to do this is to delete the work directory and delete the file from my IE temp folder and then restart Tomcat - this is a bit much!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.I'd a problem with caching a few years back, for a servlet request which returned an SVG file.
As a workaround, I ended up putting appending "#" and a timestamp / random number after it. The browser assuming each request was new, and didn't use the cache.
Eg.
http://myserver/returnSVG.do#1234567
where 1234567 is a timestamp / random.
Not sure whether you can do this on a file based URL... but maybe worth a shot...

Problem setting Unicode (utf-8) in http header using tomcat

I am trying to set a file name in utf-8 to http header using the following code:

The problem I have is that the file name is not displayed correctly when prompted to save or open in the pop up window next. I found out using Fiddler that the request header is wrong:

I am using Tomcat 5.0.28. Any idea how to get this working?
Thanks in advance!You are setting the charset for the content to be UTF-8. (That is why the method is called setContentType.) But HTTP headers are not part of the content and so that has no effect on the header.
The original specification for HTTP only allowed US-ASCII characters in headers. It is possible that more recent versions have features that allow for non-ASCII header data, but I don't know if that is the case or how you would use those features if they exist. -

I placed this test.shtml file in tomcat-home/webapps/ROOT folder and i kept the servlet in WEB-INF/classes folder.
I renamed the servlets-ssi.jar and i removed the comments for SSI in web.xml file.
When i run the servlet separately, i am getting the correct result. But if i run shtml file with the URL : http://localhost:8080/Test.shtml,
i am getting the result as:

It is not invoking servlet program.

my file was saved as Ch1Servlet.java.txt instead for
Ch1Servlet.java......So that was a problem.Now I'm
able to compile.Oh, yeah. Notepad will do that to you. I think when you save in Notepad if you put quotes around the name "Whatever.java" then it won't add the .txt.
But on compiling I'm getting the following error
package java.servlet.* does not exist
package java.servlet.http.* does not exist
package java.io.* does not exist
Do u the reason for this??? The servlet stuff is java[b]x.servlet. For the io stuff, I don't know, I'd have to see your code. Either you have a typo or a corrupt installation. -
Serious problem of jdbc-mysql connectivity using tomcat

i m in serious problem since last 15-20 days. i m trying hard to make the connection jdbc-mysql using tomcat with the help of a jsp test page but every time i am facing almost the similar probems listed below in detail:
to make sure that the jdrivers's .jar (mysql-connector-java-3.1.7-bin.jar) available for such connections working fine i have tried the above said connection without using tomcat....which is working fine...for this i have created a dummy database with a dummy table ..and written some queries in the .java file of my code which upon running inserts the specified values in the defined(dummy) database.

in response to the above error i have even tried placing the MySQLLoad.class directly in the testdb folder along with the jsp page without keeping it in a package named pkg and then importing directly as <@page import="MySQLLoad" %>

Problem in compiling servlet class - using Tomcat

I have a servlet pgm that I'm trying to compile.I using Tomcat application server.I have my servlet class in D:\servlet_wrk\project1\src
and my deployment descriptor in D:\servlet_wrk\project1\etc
my CLASSPATH var is set to C:\Sun\AppServer\jdk\bin
and
my PATH var is set to C:\Sun\AppServer\bin.
When I compile my servlet class Ch1Servlet.java in the command line from the directory
D:\servlet_wrk\project1 using the command
javac -classpath D:\applications\tomcat-5.5.12\common\lib\servlet-api.jar -d classes src/Ch1Servlet.java,
it says error:cannot read: src/Ch1Servlet.java
Can somebody help me to solve this problem and help me to compile my servlet class.

my file was saved as Ch1Servlet.java.txt instead for
Ch1Servlet.java......So that was a problem.Now I'm
able to compile.Oh, yeah. Notepad will do that to you. I think when you save in Notepad if you put quotes around the name "Whatever.java" then it won't add the .txt.
But on compiling I'm getting the following error
package java.servlet.* does not exist
package java.servlet.http.* does not exist
package java.io.* does not exist
Do u the reason for this??? The servlet stuff is java[b]x.servlet. For the io stuff, I don't know, I'd have to see your code. Either you have a typo or a corrupt installation. -
Problem in hosting using tomcat 4.1.12
earlier i was using tomcat 3.2.1 for hosting virtually. recently i upgraded to tomcat 4.1.12 and on hosting a site I constantly get this error when i try to open the site from the browser. What can be the solution to my problem.

the instruction
oracle.slq.BLOB aBlob = ((OracleResultSet)super.mRs).getBLOB("BLOBBONE")
causes this:
java.lang.ClassCastException: org.apache.commons.dbcp.DelegatingResultSet
To resolve this, I changed, in server.xml , the factory

<value>org.apache.commons.dbcp.BasicDataSourceFactory</value>
</parameter>
with:

<value>oracle.jdbc.pool.OracleDataSourceFactory</value>
</parameter>
and magically all works fine...
But the question is... Why doesn't it work with the standard factory???
There is a problem in the CLASSPATH that I don't see?

To be more precise, when generating the Java source file (looking in the 'work' directory) everything in the file after the first occurance of a Tag Library usage is commented out (with "//"), causing the Java source to be invalid and outputs an error when accessing the page via a browser saying:

I am using tomcat webserver.. when I am making modifications in the servlets, everytime i am shutting down the tomcat server bcoz the servlet is not getting updated in the webserver.. can any one tell me the solution to dynamically update the servlets without shutting down the tomcat webserver each time i modify the servlets..
sanjayUse the Tomcat manager to install/remove the WAR file during development. That way you don't have to shutdown and startup the server:

Go into the manager app and you'll be able to see all the applications that are running.
Better yet, use the Catalina Ant tasks if you're using Ant as your build tool. I recommend this. - MOD -

Problem using myfaces on webLogic
I run into the problem using myfaces on webLogic 9.1.
That is... a managedBean's instance is created twice in one page.
That page is consisted with one <h:inputText> and <h:commandButton>.
After some tests, we found out that the problems happens in a JSP which has <h:inputText>...
This problem didn't happen on Tomcat or JDeveloper.
We tried with another application.
And oh my goodness, it didn't happen.
It worked collect with no problems at all.
The difference between two application is,
the former managedBean extends abstract class,
and the latter doesn't.
Pls help me.....It was a program bag rather than weblogic's problem.
In the program, it deleted all the objects in the session scope.
So, after JSF render the next JSP, it re-create a managed bean.
But, I'm still wonder why the same things didn't happen in Tomcat.
WebLogic put managed bean into the session soon after JSF
creates it.
On the otherhand, Tomcat does that after managedbean's action
is completed???
Considering the JSF specification, i think weblogic is right.
Cos,JSF put all the components and related managed bean
into session, in the rendering phase.
