Problem using Web Sharing

Hi... I am running OSX 10.5.7 on my new Unibody Macbook that is about a week old. (I used migration assistant to transfer everything over, web sharing worked fine on my old macbook).
At first when I tried to connect I got the plain Apache startup page, and followed the advice in the apple article:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA25038?viewlocale=en_US
I updated the username.conf file but I'm not sure if I did it right, because now I can't connect to anything at all... I simply get the message:
Safari can’t connect to the server.
Safari can’t open the page “http://192.168.1.6/” because it could not connect to the server “192.168.1.6”.
(This is when I click the web sharing link in system preferences. I get the same message for the username.local link and the /~username/ link too)
I tried entering the following command in terminal:
apachectl configtest
as suggested in another post on this forum. I get the following result:
Syntax error on line 1 of /private/etc/apache2/users/Jasmine.conf:
Invalid command '{\\rtf1\\ansi\\ansicpg1252\\cocoartf949\\cocoasubrtf460', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration
is there a way to start over from scratch?
Can I get rid of the Syntax error on line 1 and get web sharing working (I'm not building websites, I just need to get some files moved over to my iPod Touch).
I've been searching for awhile but so far no luck. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi, I just wanted to know if you could help me out with a similar problem.
I'm new to both macs and apache, and I have run into a problem while installing mysql and php. I have been using a online video tutorial from lynda.com but I can't seem to access the localhost. I tried the http://localhost/~(username)/ but all it says is that safari can't connect. I checked both web sharing and MySQL server status and they are both turned on. When I ran apachectl configtest in the terminal I get this output:
httpd: Syntax error on line 459 of /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf: Syntax error on line 15 of /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-userdir.conf: Syntax error on line 8 of /private/etc/apache2/users/+entropy-php.conf: Cannot load /usr/local/php5/libphp5.so into server: dlopen(/usr/local/php5/libphp5.so, 10): no suitable image found. Did find:\n\t/usr/local/php5/libphp5.so: no matching architecture in universal wrapper
any help would be great,
thanks

  • Problem using File sharing  in a small office network

I have a problem using File sharing on an Imac and Macbook Pro.
My office has a small network running Windows Small office file server 2003. I have one Windows 2000 PC connected to it and 3 Macs, an 2.4 gHz Intel iMac running Leopard 10.5.6 , a MBP running the same and a Mac Mini running 10.5.
From the Finder Shared window of the Mac Mini, I can see all the computers on the network. It also used to be the case for the iMac, but the MBP could never see the Windows PC’s, not the server or the Win2000. This wasn’t a big problem as I was communicating between the Macs and using the shared printer on the iMac.
On Monday Jan 19 the iMac was suddenly unavailable to the other 2 Macs. It was working normally on the Friday. The iMac can access the Mac Mini and copy files to it. The Mac Mini can see the iMac but cannot access it. Even trying to connect as, ends in a failed connection. I have tried rebooting, turning File sharing off and then on again to no avail.
The iMac now also cannot see the Windows PC’s which it previously could.
To get files from the MBP for printing, I now copy it to the Mac Mini and acces the folder from the iMac, a very tedious procedure. I don’t know why this happened and am scared that the Mac Mini is going to do the same thing.
All three computers are also running VMware 2.0 with Windows XP pro, and from VMware the server is visible on all the computers.
Any help will be much appreciated, I live in a small town in South Africa and the local computer suppliers have no knowledge of the Macs.
I think that the problem with the iMac may have started after a software upgrade to 10.5.6 but I am not entirely sure.
    Thank you
    ajdk

Well, you're current method sounds pretty good. But if you want to user a file server, hey go ahead.
What you want to do when you centralize project files is to keep track of which one is the newest and becareful not to overwrite files with the same name. So you either have to set up individual spaces on the server (separate AFP/FTP folders maybe), or you'll need to run a file checkout service.
The individual space is cheaper, but it's not much of a difference from backing up to the network drive. Since you have Gigabit connections, you might even opt to save ALL the user files on the server instead of just the project files.
If you want to run a file checkout service, there's two approaches. You can run a service that can host any kind of file, or you can run a version control system for each kind of application (Photoshop, Word, etc.). Please notice, that as you read further and further along, the methods become more and more expensive and complicated. Once you get to this point, it will be necessary to purchase or build software in addition to the Mac OS X Server package.

  • Problem using file sharing and screen sharing in Leopard

I have Mac OS 10.5 Leopard installed on 4 computers in a Home Network and have a problem with sharing files and using screen sharing. Here is my setup.
MacBook Pro with my logon ID
MacBook Pro with my fiancee's logon ID
Mac Mini with both of our logon ID's
Mac Pro with both of our logon ID's
The problem I have is I am able to access the Mac Mini computer where we have an external Hard Drive connected for data. She is also able to access it. The only problem is we have it set up to only share this external USB drive. Yet for both of us it shares the external drive along with the internal Macintosh HD. Fortunately this is not a very big deal but since I'm not sharing all those drives why is it doing this?
Also, I am able to connect from the Mac Mini for example to my MBP and vice versa for screen sharing along with file sharing. Yet if she tries to connect to the Mac Pro from her MBP and vice versa it won't. It simply times out and will never connect for screen sharing or file sharing but yet the Finder shows the Mac Pro. We have a 2nd hard drive in the Mac Pro which is the one set up for file sharing. I am also unable to connect to the Mac Pro's HD. Everything appears to be set up correctly. For my MBP on the Finder it shows the Mac Pro but once again I am unable to connect to it for screen sharing or file sharing.
Also, not sure if it's related but even for her MBP she is unable to connect to it from any other computer in our network although it's set up for file sharing and screen sharing so I'm not sure if it's related to her logon ID. Then again as mentioned above neither of us can connect to the Mac Pro.
I tried to make the above sound as simple as possible. I am relatively new to networking and of course Leopard but even on the Mac Pro all settings sound the same as on the Mac Mini where we can both connect to. The only big difference is on the Mini we are connect to a USB external drive, on the Mac Pro an internal drive. Is there something I could have overlooked or are there known issues with Leopard's sharing features?
We both have .mac but since we are using this on an internal network (some wi-fi, some wired, all through an Airport Base Station Extreme) I would think this has nothing to do with Back to my Mac.
I appreciate any help with the above.

FaceTime doesn't do any of that, so I'll assume you mean Messages.
From the Messages menu bar, select
    Video ▹ Connection Doctor
In the window that opens, select
    Show: Capabilities
There should be a checkmark on the line with the words "1-on-1 video chat." Select
    Show: Network Status
You should have two green dots.
Make sure that you and the other party meet the applicable requirements shown in these support articles:
    Share your screen

  • Problems using home sharing....

Hey guys, I have home sharing activated on my iMac, and use it to share to my iPads and macbook pro.... my question is:  I have setup my iMac not to turn off (Only the screen) and I leave iTunes running..... but sometimes when i try to use home sharing it doesnt show up in list of devices on my macbook pro or in the music/video apps on my ipad.... but... when I restart my modem/router its all working again..... any reasons why i would need to restart my modem/router to get my imac to show on sharing?...... its a Thompson one, connected by ethernet cable to the imac.... any help is great appreciated cause im sick of the restarts....

    What router are you using?
Can you plug the iMack into ethernet and turn off wireless even if it is just a test with wires all over the place.. as that helps to figure out the problem.
Did you upgrade install Yosemite?? If so would a clean install be out of the question.
Some of these problems happen on every release.. so it is nothing new. Just a pain that apple didn't learn from their own beta testers that things were not working and so delay the release.. and that all the same issues were happening with Mavericks and still not fixed.
I strongly recommend to use all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric for everything in the network.. not apple names..
    Fred Blob's iMack
Can be reduced to a share name of FBIMack (no spaces and no apostrophe).
    Fred Blob's Airport Time Capsule
Is even worse.. so fix it to TCgenx (x can be the actual gen number)
    Fred Blob's Airport Wireless
    Make it TCwifi
Doesn't matter what you use.. just as long as it meets the rules.

  • Problem with web sharing in Lion

Until recently web sharing in Lion used 127.0.0.1 and 127.0.0.1/~user/ for websites. Now it uses 192.168.1.105 and 192.168.105/~user/, where 192.168.1.105 is the IP of my MacBook Air assigned by my router. Since i only want my websites for development purposes and not for online access i want to use 127.0.0.1 and 127.0.0.1/~user/ again.
    How can i do that?

The pdf files in the Developer directory say to type:
         sudo <Xcode directory>/Library/uninstall-devtools --mode=all
    in a Terminal window.
I tried that, and got back the message:
-bash: Xcode: No such file or directory
and the directory is still there.

  • How do i use web sharing?

i have been trying to set up a web page using the built in Apache server. I have turned on websharing.
it says "View this computer’s website at http://10.0.1.7/ or your personal website at http://10.0.1.7/~williamgates/"
but my actual IP is not that...it is 24.170.13.70 according to an ip checker. I have been reading other posts trying to firgure it out and have set up a dynamic DNS thing with dyndns.com. i created this address (http://williamgates.is-a-geek.com/) to use. when i type that in any browser i get a drop down log in to someone's lynksys router...I am assuming it is one of my neighbor's routers.
it says: "To view this page, you need to log in to area “Linksys RT31P2” on williamgates.is-a-geek.com."
    here is my internet connection
G5>airport extreme base station>vonage phone modem>moto surfboard cable modem. I am on road runner internet...
what can i do to make this work? I am not versed in using terminal or anything like that... but i am fairly computer savvy...
    William
    G5 Dual 1 gig Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

ok i am a little closer now...but my wife still gets nothing when she goes to williamgates.is-a-geek.com
but i can type that in on my G5 and on another laptop that is on my home network...and it finds my little sites folder....
i have swapped the extreme and the linksys like you said...now when i turn on file sharing it says
"View this computer’s website at http://192.168.15.100/ or your personal website at http://192.168.15.100/~williamgates/"
i have port forwarding on port 80 going to that IP...
i assume that is good...considering the linksys ip is 192.168.15.1
i also have Block Anonymous Internet Requests: disabled on the linksys.
    any more ideas?

  • Problem using File Sharing to access files from my old emac.

I have a new imac and I'm trying to share files with my older emac. I can access my imac files from my old emac through File Sharing, but I can't seem to access the old emac files from my imac. On my imac I can get to the Drop Box folder through File Sharing, but when I try to open the Drop Box folder I get this error message "The folder “Drop Box” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents." What do I need to do to be able to open the Drop Box folder? Where do I need to go to change the permissions so that I can open the Drop Box folder?
    Thanks in advance,
    George

The easiest way is when you connect, connect as the admin user and you'll be able to access the entire user folder (and more). So (depending on the version of OS) select "connect as..." then put in the username and password of the user you are connecting to (so the details of the eMac you are connecting to). This should allow you to access the entire user folder.
If you select any folder or file, then press command+i (or 'get info' from the file menu in finder), it will launch a window with more info about the file/folder. At the bottom of the window you have "sharing and permissions" - in here you can (after unlocking with admin username and password) add permissions for your user.
The dropbox is usually used to transfer to a machine - so you'd generally use it to drop something from anywhere on your eMac into the dropbox on the iMac, and then you can recover it from the dropbox on the iMac. The permissions are set so anyone from the outside can only write to this folder.

  • Omniportlet problems using web page as data source

When trying to set up an omniportlet using a web page as a data source
I get as far as defining the sectioning and scraping parts of the web clipping process.
When going on to the "filter" step of the process I always get an error message like:
    Error
Failed to open specified URL. Check the following:
is the URL is active; is there a valid proxy setting or,
if HTTP authentication is required, check user name and password.
    ortletInstanceId=33731_OMNIPORTLET_39337338&_orawcs_userI
    d=-&_orawcs_responseType=rowsetRow]
We are not using proxy servers for accessing external web pages in other cases
(so I wouldn't think we needed to now either), and this even happens for web
pages residing within our own network.
    Any tips are much appreciated.

Please provide support for the above request.
It appears that Oracle 10g reports doesn't support Web Service as pluggable data source. Is this option is available in Oracle 11g Reports or Oracle Discoverer Or OBIEE?

  • Problem using web mail

I use Network Solutions web mail and when I try to reply to mail I can't enter anything in the body text. I can't even get the key board to show up. Help please.

There is something about the flavour of Safari that runs on an iPad that makes Network Solutions' web mail client incompatible. I have found that the web mail client works fine on Safari on Mac.
Network Solutions' web mail client has a high level of coding far beyond the average web site. I haven't looked into it, but it looks like it's heavy with java scripts. I think this coding overhead is the root cause of the incompatibility.
After looking into this for a user's iPad, I set up the iPad mail client instead, which works just fine with Network Solutions mail.

    Hello Alka,
My bet is that somewhere another servlet is being configured with the name "InitializeServlet". I would suggest re-naming the servlet-name (and change it wherever else you are referring to it in web.xml) and give it a try.
With WebLogic Portal, library modules are used which each come with their own web.xml file that gets "merged" into the one in your webapp, so it isn't always easy to see what servlets are being deployed.

  • Problem using a shared printer Canon PIXMA MG5140

    Hi
I have a Canon PIXMA MG5140 Multifunction Printer Which is shared on my XP machine.
I have installed the drivers on my XP and my MBP also Printer is working fine when it's connected to each one of these machines via USB.
I have also added my printer on my Mac as a shared printer, but when I try to print something on my shared printer it's staying there with the status Printing on my mac and on the other side on my XP machine the job is added to my printer with the status spooling and it's not going to do anything, even waiting for 20 minutes doesn't help, it's not printing.
I have another printer shared on my XP machine and it's working fine with my MBP.
I also have another XP client which can work with both of my printers on my XP machine so I think there is something wrong on the mac side.
    Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.
When you have the printer shared by Windows you cannot use the driver supplied by Canon. Instead you need to look at an alternate driver, such as those offered by [Gutenprint|http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php] or [PrintFab|http://www.printfab.net>.
Gutenprint is preferred because it is free while PrintFab costs €49. However the MG series is not yet listed as a supported model of printer with the latest version of Gutenprint so you may be forced to look at using PrintFab, which does list the MG series as a supported printer - although they don't list an 5140 but have the 5120 and 5150.
With PrintFab installed you can then add the printer via the Windows browser of Add Printer. And then for the Print Using menu you can select the MG PrintFab driver.

  • Web sharing doesn't work on reboot

I have to turn Web Sharing on and off to make it work after a reboot. I'm not sure when this started as I use Web Sharing intermittently for developing web sites.
Trying to access on my Mac I get
Safari can’t open the page “http://localhost/~me/” because Safari can’t connect to the server “localhost”.
Works fine after going to Sharing and turning Web Sharing off and back on.
I'm sure this has been covered but haven't had any luck searching.

  • Web sharing suddenly stops working

    Hello there!
I'm using web sharing all the time to stream content from my mac to my ps3. It was always working flawlessly with no issues whatsoever. Today there's no way I can connect to from my ps3 and any other device as well. It's not a password error message I'm just getting a "could not connect to the server" error.
I opened up the apache 2 server log and I'm getting a variety of errors. I'm not really sure though what they mean.
If anyone has any ideas please let me know!!
    Here's the log

    <Directory "/Users/myusername/Sites/">
    Options Indexes MultiViews
    AllowOverride None
    Order allow,deny
    Allow from all

    then I ran the command
    sudo chown root:wheel /etc/apache2/users/shortname.conf
    with this result
    quentin:~ myusername$ sudo chown root:wheel /etc/apache2/users/shortname.conf
    Password:
chown: /etc/apache2/users/shortname.conf: No such file or directory
    quentin:~ myusername$
NOTE please remember "myusername" has been substituted to avoid confusion.
I am still unable to access my web sharing and am still getting the error message quoted at the start of this post.
I would greatly appreciate any advice as I am currently trying to implement php and MySQL on this machine.

  • Web Sharing not working after installing security update

I have been using Web Sharing without problems for several months, but now, after installing the latest security update, my browser cannot find my server at macbook.local.
    The console error messages read:
    10/15/08 11:35:17
    AM org.apache.httpd644
httpd: Syntax error on line 455 of /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf: Syntax error on line 15 of /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-userdir.conf: Syntax error on line 8 of /private/etc/apache2/users/+entropy-php.conf: Cannot load /usr/local/php5/libphp5.so into server: dlopen(/usr/local/php5/libphp5.so, 10): no suitable image found. 10/15/08 11:35:17 AM
    com.apple.launchd[1]
(org.apache.httpd644) Exited with exit code: 1
I have read a number of other posts (and searched a bit on Google), but nothing I found seems to address this particular console error message.
    What should I do?

This page fixed the problem. For me this is the part that I had to run:
Problem 2: Apache is 64 bit, entropy is 32 bit.
The only solution to this that I've seen is to force Apache to be 32 bit. For intel based machines:
    Code:
    sudo cp /usr/sbin/httpd /usr/sbin/httpd-fat
    sudo lipo /usr/sbin/httpd -thin i386 -output /usr/sbin/httpd
that will strip everything except the 32 bit intel code from httpd (after making a backup), forcing it to be 32 bit. For PPC, the command will be similar.
This fix is a bit tacky, but shouldn't cause any problems.
After running this everything worked as normal. Thanks to everyone that helped.

  • Web Sharing goes Haywire

I've been using Web sharing without any incident on my machine for the last 4 months. I have not installed any new software or updates for at least 1 month, so I cant figure out why Web Sharing just plain does not work anymore.
Visiting http://localhost shows me that Apache is up and running, but when I visit the numerical IP offered by Web sharing (http://192.168.1.35) nothing happens! Safari just keeps trying to load a page that does not exist before giving up completely.
I tried reticking it, rebooting my Macbook and even ran disk utility, still no dice. 2 days ago it was working just fine - what gives??
Anyone else come across this problem?
    I'm truly baffled!
