Problem viewing secure PDF documents in Preview

I have recently written an ebook that I would like to sell online. The original document was created using Pages and saved as a standard PDF. So far so good.
As a way of trying to protect the book, I would like to have it password protected, which of course I can do in Preview, however, to use a stamping feature on the server that would print the buyer's name and email on the downloaded book, I am told that I need to save the PDF as Acrobat 5 or later.
The problem I am finding is that if I save a PDF in Acrobat using any kind of security it fails to view properly inside Preview. The page contents are reduced to miniscule items that are totally unusable, but those same files open perfectly inside Acrobat.
So far the only way I can get password protected PDF files to open properly in Preview is if they are saved in Preview, however, I have found that these files are not compatible with the PHP stamping feature on the server that would add the buyer's details.
Does anybody with knowledge of Acrobat and Preview understand what is happening here and how I can resolve this issue?
Thanks
Ashley

I have no solution, but reassurance that this is not an isolated incidence. I also have a pdf that is password protected and opens properly in Adobe Acrobat, but only displays the first page in Preview... Hope someone can shed some light on this!

Thanks Phillip I tried that but it didn't work. Something really perplexing me though is why documents saved as PDF in Acrobat with a password for opening are completely failing to view properly when opened in Preview. Try creating a simple PDF document in Acrobat with a few pages and all you get is a huge blank space with a small black dot in the middle if you try to open that file in Preview. This was my experience and a friend has just tried as well with exactly the same result.
I have an ebook here that was password protected for opening and according to the properties it was saved as Acrobat 6, however this does open properly inside Preview and her one works properly. I've been through the settings though numerous times and I am truly baffled why it's proving such a problem. The book I have written is about photography and just about every photographer I know uses a Mac, so I cannot simply ignore this question.

  • Problems viewing Combined PDF's in Preview

I work primarily in Photoshop CS5.  All of my work is created there.  My problem arises when creating and viewing compressed PDF's using "Preview" on Macintosh.  The text is very funky.  But as expected, Acrobat itself displays all files flawlessly.  My PDF creation flow is as follows.
    1.  Save Photoshop Document(s) to individual Photoshop PDF's, without layers so I keep only one image and my vector data. (I always resize and save my documents appropiately for their intended use.  I keep all file sizes to a minimum when creating a document for email use.)
    2.  Using Acrobat, I combine/merge my files, selecting the appropriate compression method for its intended use (Small, Medium, Large)
When I use the Medium compression in Acrobat, I encounter no problems through "Preview".  All of my text appears as it should.  Works great, but I'm left with a 26MB file.
When I use the Small compression in Acrobat (suggested for email) I have all kinds of problems with my text in "Preview".  I would love to use this option as my files sizes are half of what they are at Medium compression.
I know that "Preview" is not a replacement for Acrobat, but Mac's default application for opening PDF's is "Preview", and many of the users that I deal with are not equiped with any Adobe software.  Is there a fix?  What is Acrobat discarding when it compresses the file for emailing?
I might add that the small version that is not displaying the text, still contains the text (I'm able to select it), it's just not visible.

The problem isn't with what Acrobat is discarding, but what Mac Preview is doing with the data available. The problem is with Preview. You cannot make a silk purse with a sow's ear. If Preview is doing a terrible job rendering a perfectly fine pdf, that Reader displays appropriately, there is nothing Adobe can do.

  • Problem with viewing Adobe PDF documents

Problem with viewing Adobe PDF documents
I have a Windows 7 Home Premium Computer
I have read all the suggestions and I have tried downloading multiple versions of Adobe Reader for Windows 7 and Vista from http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/.
Prior to downloading each version I would delete the current version using  control panel programs uninstall.
After each new installation I would shut down the computer and then restart the computer.
I have tried downloading versions with and without having my antivirus (CA Total Defence) running.
I am told after download that the version downloaded successfully.
I have read Acrobat Help http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/troubleshoot-reader-installation-windows.html and followed the instructions.
None of the above has helped.
The problem is no matter what version of Adobe Reader I download, I cannot seem to open a PDF and read it. Nor will the Reader itself stay open.
    1. If I try opening the reader from the desktop link or from the actual program menu, the reader opens for about 5 seconds and then closes of its own accord. If I try to click on any of the reader menus (eg File, Edit, View, Window, Help, Tools) then a warning bell is sounded and the menu does not open. Shortly thereafter the reader closes.
    2. If I try to open the reader by double clicking on a PDF document then the reader opens but the document is not shown (only the grey PDF reader screen is shown) and then the reader closes after about 5 seconds of its own accord.
The desktop shortcut shows as the 'red Adobe Reader icon'. But the actual program menu icon shows as a blank folder icon.  All PDF documents show as the PDF Adobe icon.
I have tested various PDFs and none will open on this computer but they will open on other computers.
I have created a word document and saved it as a PDF. It looked like it had save correctly (has the appropriate icon) but when I try to open it as per step 2 above then the document is not shown and then the reader closes after about 5 seconds of its own accord.
Does anyone have any ideas about what is going on and how I can fix this?
Could you please answer in this forum and email me at [removed]
I am so puzzled and frustrated.

Thank you so much this did the trick.
I spent so many hours on trying to sort this out and your answer was so  simple and clear.

  • Encrypting PDF documents in Preview

If you try to encrypt a PDF document in Preview by selecting the encrypt checkbox in the Save As panel, you might find that when you re-open the encrypted document, any forms that you filled out in the document have garbled characters instead of the text. This appears to be a bug to me.
To encrypt a PDF document that contains a form that you filled out with the Preview application:
    1. Choose "Print..." from the File menu.
    2. In the sheet that appears, choose "Save as PDF..." from the PDF button in the lower left corner.
    3. In the Save panel that appears, click the "Security Options..." button in the lower middle of the panel.
    4. Complete the panel that appears according to the security restrictions you want.
    5. Save the PDF from the Save panel in step 3.
When you open the document back up, you will be prompted for passwords according to the restrictions you specified. The document's entered text should be just as you saved it.
*Warning: If you choose to password protect the ability to print the document, and re-open the encrypted document and try to print it, it asks you for the password. Even if you enter the password, the document won't print. The encryption permissions in the Inspector floating panel for the document will also say that you don't have the ability to print. Seems like another bug.*
I would think that encrypting a document should also give you the ability to password protect it. Having to act like you're printing the document seems unintuitive. I hope these bugs get fixed soon.

No sense posting here unless you have a problem. If you want to report this to Apple, either send Feedback or send bug reports and enhancement requests via its Bug Reporter system. To do the latter, join the Apple Developer Connection (ADC)—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report/enhancement request. The nice thing with this procedure over submitting feedback is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.

  • Adobe Reader Crashes while opening Secure PDF Documents

    Hi,
I have Adobe Reader 8.1.2. Up until today, i was able to open secure PDF documents without any issue. Suddenly, it started to give me errors, saying "Adobe Reader has encountered a problem and it needs to close. I have to tell Microsoft" and so on...
I tried re-installing 8.1.0, secure documents opened a few times and then the same problem returned. I can open normal PDF documents but the problem is with the secure ones.
    Rebooting, re-installing again didn't help.
What could be the issue and how to solve it? I have Trend Micro Antivirus s/w but i always had them all these days and everything was fine.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Can someone help me on this please?
I have tried removing Adobe Reader, re-install it but doesn't help. Secure documents do open sometimes but fail again. I have even tried removing Adobe Reader using MSI Cleanup Utility, no use.
The problem seems to be in the imapdb.dll. An error report is generated by Windows XP but it is rather large to fit in here.
I also Trend Micro Anti-Virus tool and it may have something to do with it is what i feel.
Any help on how to solve this will be great.
    Thanks

  • Annotating pdf documents in Preview - the text search feature doesn't work?

    Hi everyone,
I'd like to annotate my pdf documents using preview. However, I realized the other day that as soon as I start annotating a document (with notes, shapes, highlighting, etc), the preview text search doesn't work anymore.
Thanks for any help or advice!

This is a known problem. I have seen one suggestion to print the annotated PDF as a new PDF in order to get search capability back. You can try the Apple Discussions "search" feature at the upper right corner to look for more suggestions.

  • Compare two secured PDF documents

    Hi,
I am using a licensed version of Adobe acrobat 11.0 professional. I have a requirement of comparing two secured PDF documents (which have the lock symbol displayed). But, the 'compare documents' option does not allow comparing two Secured PDFs. It gives a message 'This operation is not permitted'. Is there a way I can compare them ?
Earlier, I was using the version 5.0 in which we can compare secured documents without any problem.

Actually, its asking for a password when i tried to do that. So, is there a way to do it through the acrobat 11.0 tool itself ? (This feature of comparing secured documents was present in the versions 5.0 & 6.0. But, in later versions, it was removed)

  • How to I set an internal link in a PDF document using Preview?  After setting a link under the Tools/Annotations menu, the link doesn't work and no detailed instructions are provided.

How to I set an internal link in a PDF document using Preview?  After setting a link under the Tools/Annotations menu, the link doesn't work and no detailed instructions are provided via the Help menu other than it showing the pull-down menu selection to make.

No.  I am able to use the other features such as underlining, highlighting, adding rectangles and oval and save those changes.

  • Merging pdf documents in Preview while maintaining OCR capability

...isn't working.  I can copy text from the individual pdf's, but when I merge them, the OCR text is replaced with "_".  This happening to anyone else?  This is happening on more than one Mac here at the office.
I'm opening one file, expanding the sidebar, then dragging each subsequent file ONTO the page of the original.  Then I save-as and that's the result I'm getting.

Thanks Linc. This document seems a misleading. I'm not sure what the combining of PDFs in this manner is supposed to do, but it does not seem to merge the files.
After the three documents are brought together in one, you end up with three separate documents combined in one Preview window, which is handy for looking at them, but not for much else.
When you close the window you still have three separate documents. The title "Combining PDF documents using Preview" seems quite misleading.

  • When viewing a PDF document; cant you search for a keyword anymore?

Hello (me again lol) prior to 2.2 Software upgrade I recall that when viewing a pdf document I could search for certain keywords; now I cant figure out how.
First off, again I'm using 2.2 Software on Verizon' HTC Incredible.
Next up when viewing a pdf I believe its using Adobe Reader.  I have a few options but one thing I cannot find is "search" or even 'go to" (page number)
I believe Quck Office doesnt pull up any PDFs so I'm wondering if anyone has figured out how to search for keywords; thanks

If you are using the Quick Office Application or the PDF Viewer, make sure both applications are updated to the newest versions.
You can do that by going to the Android Market Place on the device, then press menu and download, then you can see applications that can be updated.
To check for updates while using Quick Office, press the Menu button, then select Updates. Quickoffice will automatically check for updates to your software.
You can search for text strings in your document using Quickword. Switch to Reflow View, then press the Menu button, and tap Search. A text entry field will appear at the top of your document. Enter the text you wish to search for and tap the search icon to the right of the text field. Quickword will highlight all instances of the text you are searching for.
Copy and paste the link below into your browser's address bar for more information.

  • I combined my two pdf documents on preview, but there is no save as button like everyone says there is. How do I save this thing?

How do I save my combined pdf documents on preview when there is no save as button? I try to hit duplicate, but it only duplicates the first page of my 2 paged pdf

There's actually just a "Save a Version" selection, which does not apparently do anything. It's not like "Save As" used to be where it gave you a dialogue box to rename the document. It just saves the original document with only one pdf, and not the other...

  • Problems with secure PDFs in Preview

I recently saved and secured a PDF with Adobe Acrobat 9. While the document is secure when I open it with Adobe Acrobat or Reader, there is no security when I open up the same document with Preview... So much for the 256 bit encryption...
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
    Thanks,
    Barry

Wow! So much for all the money Adobe put into securing PDFs...
    Thanks for your help.
