Problem w/lines appearing on displays

Need a little help. Basically all the sudden these slanted vertical lines stating appearing all over my dual display setup. They go away if I move a window pane over them or try to grab them with the mouse. Even sometimes when I do drag a window pane the lines appear worse, and the graphics that makeup a window pane become jagged. If I click around the messed up graphics it gets fixed. Is this a video card problem? The fan is working on my graphics card. I don't think it's the displays, more of a software related issue it seems. But wanted to check 1st.

The US Military has developed a very sophisticated model of failures of electronic equipment. But if you are not using just-invented products and launching them into space, the main factors that dominate predicted failure rates are:
• Number of transistors
• chip junction temperature
Display cards have huge numbers of transistors due to the complexity of their processors and the enormous amount of fast memory. They also run fast, which means they run HOT. They would be predicted to fail very frequently.
Yet posters here very seldom post problems that are resolved with, "looks like a bad display card". To me this says either:
• They don't fail as often as we expect. \[In which case, kudos to the card designers for robust designs and good cooling!]
• When they fail, the problem is so obvious that the complaints never make it to postings here -- they are replaced without any need for additional debugging.

  • Nasty horizontal line appeared on display

My MBA has suddenyl developed a nasty horizontal line right across the display. Looks about a pixel in thickness.
    Any thoughts please?

Took it into a Genius and they're replacing the screen for free. No quibbles at all. And its 2 years old. And its not in warranty! And I get the loose hinge issue solved at the same time!

  • My late 2007 Mac Book Pro has tiny vertical lines in the display intermittently.

Intermittent, tiny vertical lines in display of my refurbished Mac Book Pro late 2007 , A1226 model.
Have replaced the actual display screen.
Apple Genius Bar tested hardware and all OK, although the display was working by the time I got there.
It is fine right now, I am using it for this post, but is hard to read small letters and numbers when it acts up.
Even when the lines appear the display shows bright and crisp on any external monitor.
Does anyone have any insight to this problem?
    Thanks !

It could be the inverter cable or board is beginning to get frayed.
If attaching an external display shows the lines, you know the problem is direct to the videochip itself.
Some games are videochip specific in their requirements and may trigger the issue anyway, if the videochip is not on their supported list.

  • I bought a macbook pro retina ME665 in Dubai, and 3 month later its display stopped working properly.some white lines appeared on it and display itself became white and black. Can anybody suggest what should I do to fix this problem?

In October 2013 I was on Vacationin Dubai and bought there Macbook pro retina ME665. I returned to Kyrgystan (home town) and for New Year I was away for a week. When I came back i found that the dispaly of my laptop became white and black, some lines appeared on it. Everybody in my family told me that no one has dropped my laptop or done anything that can cause this problem. there is no any service provider of apple in my country. WIl, the international warranty cover this case? I bought this laptop not from apple store, but in a simple store and I lost reciept.

  • Problems with Scrollable Content : colored lines appear

    Hello,
We have a book with several Scrollable Content (around a total of 200).
The fact is that in many colored lines appear. These lines appear i disappear when changing article,
    anyone have any solution?
    THANKS

    Hi
I had the same problem. I had pasted the scrollable content directly into the container frame, but the pasted content was slightly 'taller' than the container window (the pasted object group was maybe 0.012 pixels larger than the container, so very slight) this caused it to display the coloured lines when I moved it up or down, although left and right movement worked fine. Resizing so the pasted content was smaller and exact pixels not 0.123 px (or the same size) as the container fixed it.

  • Horizontal Lines appear in random spots on display

    Hey everyone.
Recently, my white iMac has been locking up a lot lately (forcing me to hard-reset, boo) and horizontal lines have been appearing. It freezes most often during more graphically-intense applications like games and Pro Tools. It's not the regular Mac freeze, where the grey dialogue box politely and multi-ligual-ly informs you that you need to reset. When my computer freezes, things just lock up, or the screen will go black.
I thought since I had not done a whole lot of computer maintenance since I bought it, there was a possibility it was just a horrible software glitch.
So I zero'd my hard drive and reformatted. Almost immediately the lines returned. Interestingly enough, I don't need a digital camera because these awful lines can get captured by screenshots.
The lines are typically pinkish or black, but if you look close, the individual pixels in the lines seem to be coloured arbitrarily. If the lines appear on a window, I can drag it around and the lines will follow. If I resize the window, the lines disappear.
Here's a screenshot. Note how the lines only affect the one window, and do not span the entire screen.
    http://img161.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=29918lines_122708lo.jpg
These lines aren't bound to a particular window, just the desktop as a whole.
    http://img142.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=45631lines2_1221119lo.jpg
How are these things getting captured on screenshot if I just reformatted my computer?
If it's not a software error, could a worn-out graphics card produce odd artifacts that are screen-capture-able? Apple ships hardware that can't last 2 years? Am I going to get shafted if I try to call them? Is there possibly a fix for this?
Thank you everyone for taking the time to read my post, and thanks in advance if you have some advice or want to express that you share the same issues.

Just to add a few comments to this thread, I had similar problems (green dots appearing at random locations on the display, lines, then corrupted icons graphics / text, and eventually computer lock-ups that required a power/hard reset).
It took me weeks to realize that heat was the root cause of these display artifacts / computer lock-ups. I had run zillions of memory tests, ran the Apple Diagnostic so many times, tried TechTool Pro, and I never ever got reported with a single error by any of these tools. I swapped RAM, disconnected all external Firewire / USB devices, tried different versions of Tiger / Leopard, to eventually conclude it had to be something else...
... and then it struck me one evening this week. I realized that I was now using my Mac Mini to transcode video (a task that I used to perform with my iMac, but that I stopped to use as a transcoding device as this would eventually lead to the symptoms described above), and that the Mac Mini's fan would increase in speed when the CPU would get loaded. It is then that I realized that I had never heard my iMac's fan change in pitch... with the exception of when I was running the Apple Diagnostic tool !!!
    Gotcha !
I also downloaded the latest version of smcFanControl, and changing the fan settings to 1200 (ODD), 2200 (HDD), 2000 (CPU) fixed all the symptoms.
I submitted a bug report to Apple about this, as I consider this is a major issue. I have seen the temperature of the power supply reach 80+ Celsius. Water boils at 100 Celsius. That is hot, way too hot.
I hope Apple will fix this issue ASAP through a SMC firmware update as fans control is meant to be automated.
    Just my 0.02$CAD.

  • Wierd lines on my display and frequent lock-ups w/ and w/o display problems

When booting I sometimes get weird lines and blocks on my display (the GRAY Apple screen) and then it hangs, other times the computer will boot and run fine for 20-30 minutes and then the display goes wonkers with blocks and lines and the computer does not respond. The only way I can get it to boot is to reset the PRAM by letting it CHIME 3x and then occasionally it will boot without issue and run, while other times I still get the blocks and lines on the display.
When I am able to get it to recover and re-boot after the lock-up and display problems and occasionally the box in the middle asking me to re-boot similar to a kernel panic the OPS gives me the option to REPORT the error and here is the error for others who would know more...
    Thank you in advance,

Anyone know what is causing my problems? I thought it was heat so I downloaded a CPU and FAN temperature monitor and the CPU was getting VERY HOT at first so I then ramped-up the CPU FAN SPEED to maximum - it turns out the CPU FAN was not rotating well at low speed - since then I have cleaned and checked the fans and they all work as they should and blow on high(er) when the CPU temperature is above a certain level.

Is there a kb article or something that would illuminate what to look for in these logs, or is it a matter of learning by osmosis?
Both. I am not skilled in reading logs. It is a very technical and time consuming task for the uninitiated (me!) In scanning a log I look for the backtrace and loading dependencies. The first item in the backtrace is usually the roadblock.
Beyond that you can look at the Technical Note TN2063: Understanding and Debugging Kernel Panics
Should make for good bedtime reading. Puts you right to sleep.

A have new problem that has appeared in my Mac Mail.  When I type a frequently used email into the 'To: line' it populates the correct name but with 8 different email addresses not associated with that name.  I have gone to the window pop-down to 'previous recipients' and deleted that addressee as well as all the email addresses it is assigning to that name.  I have also deleted the account entirely from my address book.  I have have run repair permissions and also full defrag in iDefrag.  Still the problem persists.  Any suggestions?

    Hello CarolineLongEaton,
I noticed you posted this problem quite a while ago and wondered if you managed to have it fixed in an alternative way then posting here. It is too bad no one has posted a solution here. I have a similar problem and if you have had yours solved since this occurance how you accomplished it may help me with mine. I am interested to know what you have done about yours.
If you are interested in comparing the problems to see if your solution (if you have found one) might help me also then here is the link to the discussion.

If your problem has not been solved then I will comment here again if/when my issue is resolved as it may help you too. My hope here is that we may help each other. To quote you "all ideas gratefuly recieved". I hope your problem was resolved, ernestly for your sake and selfishly for mine also. I wish you and yours a great day!

What is the resolution of the picture that you are trying to print?
Go to Image>resize>image size, read the resolution in px/in, then report back, please.
Also, are you in a position to try printing with another printer in an attempt to narrow this down?

  • Problem with tiny white lines appearing in my work

    Hi all,
I'm very new to photoshop. I find that while I'm working this white noise (and also other times in the form of a bunch of tiny white lines) appears to cover most of my image. See to the right of the man's head as well as from his neck down on the orange background. It's manageable (though annoying and distracting) while working, but I got to thinking what if the finished file displays the lines as well? To test this, I saved it in a few file formats and I still see the lines. Also, this project, including the starting file, is from the adobe tutorial classroom in a book, if that helps. I'm hoping someone can help me! Thanks!

    Thanks for your help.

The book is showing the same exact image without the lines.

The alternative is to leave the screen as it is, with the black line.
This is a hardware failure. You can't fix it by pressing a few keys.

  • Horizontal refresh lines appearing on Desktop Preview since 10.6 upgrade

I just recently upgraded my system to Snow Leopard, and unfortunately I am now getting TERRIBLE horizontal refresh lines during full screen playback in FCP 7 on my 2nd monitor. It is so bad it is unusable.
When I play back video on with Desktop Preview full screen on my main monitor, the video looks great. I've even plugged the monitors into opposite ports to test and it's definitely not my monitors. The same thing happens on my opposite monitor if it is plugged into the second jack.
I tried playing back the same footage in Quicktime Pro on both monitors. NO ARTIFACTS.
I've also reset PRAM, trashed prefs, etc.
It seems that 10.6 has broken an nVidea video driver and caused a bug in FCP 7 and is causing a terrible refresh line that pokes out in transitions and during bright scenes and contrasty imagery. PLEASE FIX THIS APPLE. I would hate to have to reinstall 10.5 just to use FCP.

I have tried a few things listed here to correct this problem, I think I have figured it out. The steps I took to get rid of the lines that randomly appeared across the screen (desk top) and with in open windows are as follows:
First I ran apple jack on auto mode. You have to start up in single user mode. I did this three times as recommend in another forum that I can't remember the site now.
Second, I freed up some memory. I used appDelete.app and rid my computer of all applications I haven't used or no longer needed.
After the above steps, I reset the PRAM by restarting while holding the option, command, P & R key down, until the start up chime sounded three times.
I did this over a week ago and not only is my system running faster, I haven't had one line appear in any open windows or across the display.
Side note, I recall that the time I started noticing these lines, was shortly after downloading internet explorer, I needed that browser for a job related site that didn't or wouldn't work with Safari or Firefox. After I used that browser for my employer, I never used it again. Shortly after that install, is when I started noticing the lines. I removed that application using appDelete.app and again no lines ever since.
    I hope this helps others.

  • Thin lines appear after flattening PDFs

    Hello,
Whether we export a layout using one of the PDF/X standards or tell Acrobat Pro to flatten afterwards, the file appears to have thin white lines bordering all the previously semi-transparent areas. Upon zooming in as close as possible, these lines appear to be very negligibly thin and thus not likely to appear in print. However, this of course makes the PDF unusable except for printing (it looks bad at normal zoom with all these random boxes).
Is this normal behavior or should we be choosing another PDF preset or PDF exporting method? Has anyone had any problems with commercial printers showing these artifact lines?
    thanks,
    JP

The flattener creates what is referred to as "atomic regions" as part of the flattening process...basically it divides the content up, creating or maintaing vector objects and rasters as needed. After flattening, these "artifact" lines are sometimes visible at those atomic region boundaries if, in Preferences under Page Display > Rendering > Smooth Line Art is turned on. This setting has a tendency to exaggerate those lines, which is what you are seeing. When printed they should not be visible.
Can the files be saved as PDF/X4 which supports live transparency? Keeping the transparency live should also mean a smaller file size than a flattened file.

  • Lines appear when zoomed in

These lines appear around the cursor when I use CTRL+scroll-up to zoom in. Is this a known issue with snow leopard or should I see a Apple genius?

This "smudging" problem was something I experienced when running 10.5, however 10.6 has fixed it for me. Are you fully up to date in software update? Going to Apple > About this Macintosh > More info > Graphics/Displays, what is your chipset model?

  • Estrange lines appear in the windows when scrolling, or on a popup Win

    Hi everybody.
I'm a extremely happy new user on Arch, but i have a little problem that its very annoying.
The thing is that I have FGLRX installed on my laptop, which runs on a ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 (Mobility 200M).
I install the Catalyst driver with the guiding of his wiki page. Then i put my old Xorg.conf file, that always worked well with Compiz-Fusion, and everything else, but in arch, appears some estrange lines when I'm scrolling an OOo Document, or even a web page, or a video.
This lines appears, an when i minimize the Window, or put another window over that area, the lines are erased.
Why happens this ? I didn't have this issue in the past.
    Here is my Xorg.conf
    http://pastebin.ca/1027643
(the bunch of options disabled are because Xorg.0.log says that they are not used)
    Some outputs:
    [root@antares ~]# lspci | grep VGA
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS485 [Radeon Xpress 1100 IGP]
    [root@antares ~]# fglrxinfo
    display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon Xpress Series
    OpenGL version string: 2.1.7412 Release
    [root@antares ~]# glxinfo | grep direct
    direct rendering: Yes
    Thank you in advance!!

This is the screenshot of lines.  In testing other PDFs, both created and scanned, it seems to be on these reports I receive.  Maybe a protection they use?  To get around this I used the highlight function and select black as the highlighted.
