Problem when pre-composing masked layer

Ok, i am having a problem when masking a Twixtored layer.
this is what happens:
i have the original footage in a comp, i used twixtor to slow it down to 3% speed
Seen here: http://prntscr.com/zbicc
I Then pre composed that slowed down layer into a comp of it's own and masked around that parts i wanted and named this comp "masked comp 1"
Seen here: http://prntscr.com/zbitw
and here: http://prntscr.com/zbiyc
i then precomposed the masked layer into another comp called "sky replacement" and this is when i hit the problem, it dosn't show up, it just gives me a black screen.
Seen here: http://prntscr.com/zbj9n
and here: http://prntscr.com/zbjcn
I tried rendering out "Masked comp 1" and "sky replacement" and with both it just renders a black screen, but if i render the Twixtored comp that renders fine. So i think it has somthing to do with the mask but i can't figure it out.
Please help.

The black screen notwithstanding, I see two VERY big problems in the workflow as described... or at least as how I understand your workflow.
You used Twixtor to slow down video to 3% of its normal speed:  that represents tons and tons of speed redeuction, and you're lucky that Twixtor was able to give you a useful image AT ALL.  Then you precomped it, too boot.
Then you hoped against all hope that you could effectively mask the precomp... which was presumably at the target frame rate.
Give yourself a fighting chance to come up with something:  once you use Twxtor, prerender it.  And I have to tell you: if you are actually using Twixtor to slow down footage to 3% of normal speed, it probably won't look good.  Twixtor is great for minor speed variations, but for 3% of normal?  It can't work miracles......

  • Transform Effect problems when used with 3D layer's depth

    Here is my set up.
I have PreComp with graphics illustrator imported layer with continuosly rasterise enabled.
This graphics has a reflection underneath it. I made the reflection by applying Transform effect, setting offset to -100 and adjusting the Anchor point.
As far as graphics move left to right (X,Y) there is no problem and Anchor point is in its place.
As soon as I make the layer 3D and start changing depth values the reflection starts to jump around.
My guess is - it happens because anchor point is a constant value and since reflection is based off its value it does not follow the base of the graphics. Purhasps there is a code snippet which need to be used to link the Anchor Point value to the Zoom Value? Adjusting Anchor point values with key frames proved too difficult.
In another words I would like to keep the reflection at a constant distance from the base of the graphics and once the graphics move out or in the reflection does not follow.
I PreComposed this graphics and imported it into the new Compostion and applied XY and Z movement using camera and Null layers. It was the same effect and reflection did not stick to the base of the graphics.
I need to keep Collapse Transformation enabled on all the consecutive Comps/PreComps to make sure the vector art renders at high quality.
What would be a proper way to make a reflection of a 3D layer/preComp  in the Comp where movement controlled with Camera and Null layers, with Continuosly Rasterise/Collapse Transformations enabled?

Great! At least I know not to spent my time in a wrong direction.
    Two questions:
Do I need to enable "Collapse Transformations" in the final rendering Comp in order to keep "Continuously Rasterize" settings within the nested PreComps enabled (for illustrator files rendering sharp). I have a few nested preComps and originally activated "Continuously Rasterize" throughout the project in all of them.
"How" to create reflections seem clear from your comment. Do not use any effects but rather create a copy of a layer I would like to have a reflection of and scale it to -100. "When" seems to be a mystery. Should I apply reflection in the very first preComp or very last or the one where I create all the major animation for my graphics?

  • How do I hide the mask layer when exporting as animated GIF ?

    Hi,
I have designed the following logo for my football team's website.
It plays fine as a flash file but when I export it as an animated GIF file, it shows the bright pink mask layer. Obviously I don't want it to. Has anybody an idea of how to rectify this problem ?
    Thanks,
    Phil

    Peter,
Success! I finally got my head round it Indeed, I can see now your point about the export method being preferable, it's also much quicker than my old "print PDF" method! Like I say, publishing isn't my area of expertise and I get comfortable and set in my ways with certain ways of doing things, especially with computers!
    Bob,
Like I was saying to Peter, that makes sense now. I guess my not appreciating the process of PDF creation and thus my incorrect use of the terminology may have confused the issue. With regards the link you sent me, wow it certainly seems I'm not the only one who gets confused! Fortunately it seems my problem is now solved and I have learned to produce a better product!
    Thanks again guys!
....now I wonder how I can make my dissertation interactive....

  • New Layer on top of a Mask Layer causes problems

I have a mask layer that shows/loads an imported flv inside of it.
the masked layer has a blank keyframe with the following code in it.......
    var myLoader:Loader = new Loader();
    addChild(myLoader);
    var url:URLRequest = new URLRequest("mymovie.swf");
    myLoader.load(url);
What happens is when i add a new layer to my main flash movie, right above the mask layer, it messes up the movie. Instead of it loading in the mask, it loads on top of everything. Why does this occur?

I created an empty movie clip and placed my two mask layers and it worked fine.
    Thanks!

  • Multiple Problems When Composing

When either composing a new message, or replying to one two ( or more as yet unnoticed ) problems occur.
I use a dotMac alias, so normally it offers the choice of which account to send from, now however that menu is inaccessible, and the account from which it is to be sent from is not visible (image at http://idisk.mac.com/harryrichman/Public/pic.png ).
Also, I cannot click into the main body of the message, so am unable to type anything, the tab button doesn't work either.
This is happening on just my user account, none of the others on the computer are doing this. And obviously it doesn't happen when using the dotMac web-mail.

Okay...I figured it out, I just deleted the preferences.

  • Odd problem adjusting scale of rotoshape layer

Using Mocha I've rotoscoped my actor out of some footage in order to composite him on top of something else.
After pasting the shape data to his layer in AE, I'm happy with the roto but now I need to adjust the position and scale. Changing the position parameter in layer properties works fine, but when I adjust scale, the rotoshape starts to go haywire. As the layer size increases, the mask around the rotoshape gets left behind, despite being on the same layer. Then if I scrub forward in time, the position of the roto mask has gone back to its original place too. There are no keyframes on it, the only thing I have applied is the Mocha shape data. Am I doing something wrong, or is this a glitch?
    Cheers.

It works as it should - all mocha data is treated as absolute based on the size of the mocha project and then relative to the AE comp, not the layer. You cannot simply scale later. Pre-compose, then scale or insert the mocha shapes as masks...

  • Problems with creating a mask in AE 4.1

    Hi all,
Yes, I'm using After Effects 4.1... not CS4... that's version 4.1 from 13 years ago.
I'm having a problem creating a simple mask and I can see from a more current AECS5 tutorial that creating a mask on a layer is similar to creating one in AE4 based on a comparison to an old AE4 tutorial.  I've read instructional material and it seems simple enough, but for some reason its not working for me... I know I'm doing something wrong.  I'm an advanced Photoshop user and I know the concept of layer masks and how to create them.
I create the mask on a layer and I can see and adjust the bezier points to adjust the shape of the mask... adjusting the shape of the mask by the bezier points is a little tricky since it stretches in both directions when you grab a single point, but that's okay,
But no matter which mask mode I try, Add, Subtract, Intersect, Lighten, Darken or Difference, it is not masking the layer that it is attached to even when I preview the timeline.
I don't want to just create a color layer on top of the layer I want masked to simulate a mask (which I can otherwise do) because I want to stack layers with masks and have the unmasked parts showing through (like in Photoshop), without rendering separate layers and re-importing them with blue screening or black screening... I should just be able to mask the parts that I don't want to show up on each layer and only have the unmasked parts of each layer show through each other for my final render.
    Thanks for any input,
    digi

Thanks for writing back Dave and Rick,
I think there is something in what Dave said about opening a new layer window, but it still isn't working right.  Please see the screenshot of two full project windows below.
One thing that could be giving me problems is my layer content... it is a numbers layer attached to a solid layer, as you can see.
In the comp window at the top of each screenshot below, you can see the bezier points from my original mask that I created by clicking on 'Shape' next to 'Mask' on the left in the timeline window after selecting 'Layer>Mask>New Mask'... but I can see that this isn't the right way to do it because (1) it isn't masking, it only shows bezier points. (2) When I try to adjust those bezier points in the comp window it only stretches the numbers. And (3) when I'm in the comp window, I don't have access to the layer shape square and oval tools... they are grayed-out.
So in the layer window after double-clicking on my numbers layer, in screen #2 below, you can see that it isn't showing anything... just black, but you can see the bezier points from my original masking attempt that also show up in the comp window.  But in that layer window I do have the square and oval tools available to me and you can see that I tried creating a new experiment with a triangle mask, but that only shows bezier points and no masking effect.  When I close that window, as Dave said, after making the new triangle mask, it only broadens out my original mask besizer points in the comp window to encompass both masks now, but does not reflect either masks actual shape, nor is it actually masking anything.
Let me know what you think.
    Thanks again,
    digi

  • Problem when extracting Smart Objects

I am having a problem when extracting Smart Objects.
I work for a small pre-press company. We are working on several computers using one Job Server. Some of these computers have different versions of OS.
For one of our clients the company uses Smart Objects as a precaution for moire issues. The child file stays a certain size, while the parent file is sized down for print. Our client has started to request the larger Child size image for their use. For the volume of images requested, I have made an action out of Photoshop to open the smart object and save out a flat tif of the larger child file image. Here is the problem...
At times the smart objects child file does not retain the name of the smart object layer as its being extracted. What could be causing the lost connection between the parent file name to the child file name, and is there a way to prevent it in the future?
    Thanks for your help:)
    DVan

    Hello,
I have noticed that. The true problem is that the child files name starts out as the parent layer name, but then somewhere down the line it turns wonkie, starting to be named things like 12.psd etc. Please see attached. Your can't re-save the name of the child file either because all that does is save out a named temp file that does not get linked back to the parent file....so what is making the name change?

  • Mask layer not visible in layers palete

I have a strange problem, when I apply any kind of mask to a layer in motion 3, the mask icon shows up on the layer to which it was applied in the layers palette, but the mask layer does not show up underneath the layer to which it was applied, thus i can't select the mask to adjust the controls of the mask, I can only toggle it on and off,
I would assume this is a simple user error, but for the life of me I can't find a "show mask layer" setting anywhere,
any insight on this problem would be hugely appreciated.

the disclosure triangle for the entire group is twiddled, showing my layers and any added effects, but for some reason the only thing that shows the presence of a mask is the small square icon on the video layer, but as there is not layer beneath the video layer to click on to adjust mask controls... i have been watching m3 tutorials and the mask always creates a layer in the palette when activated, but for some reason it's not with mine...

  • Photoshop Mask Layer, see through multiple layers.

    Dear All -
I am a new learner to Photoshop and working on Layers and Layer Mask to obtain see through multiple Layers effect.
Below is the description of my problem that I am looking forward towards resolution in this forum. I will be glad if some expert can guide me on this.
I have three layers of different colors as below.
Layer 1topmost layer) with Red color filled rectangle.
Layer 2(below Layer 1) with Green color filled rectangle.
Layer 3(bottom most layer, below Layer 2) with Blue color filled rectangle.
When I erase something with brush on Layer 1 using masking Layer 1, it hollows the erased part and start showing the Green color of Layer 2 in hollow section of Layer 1.
What I want to achieve is that, when I erase Layer 1 using layer mask, then it should hollow Layer 1 as well as Layer 2 and should show Blue color in the hollow section of Layer 1.
i.e: Hollow section made on Layer 1(using Layer Mask on Layer 1) should also be applied on Layer 2 so that Layer 1 and Layer 2 becomes hollow using eraser and I should see through Layer 1 and Layer 2 and Blue color of Layer 3 should be visible from the hollow section.
Though I can do this by Flattening Layer 1 and Layer 2 together so that it forms one single Image, and then when I hollow this Flattened image using Layer Mask, then it will show me Blue color. But I do not want to do this, as I would lose the flexibility to unhollow/recover the hollow region on both Layer 1 and Layer 2 independently in the future.
    Thank You,
    Saurabh Khanna.

Here's a sample of copying the layer mask onto layer 2 using a hard cutout.
Here's the same thing using a soft feather cutout.

  • Strange behavior when duplicating a text layer

    Hello All,
    I was following a tutorial.
I created a text layer.  typed in the number "2012" in white
I placed a texture in the comp.
I used the text layer as an alpha track matte
Then I duplicated the Text layer, and instead of the layer being named 2012 it automatically changed to 2013.
When I look at it as Layer Name or Source Name it was the same "2013"
So I create a new text layer and type in "0" and the layer was appropiately named 0
But when I duplicated that layer it was named 2014
When I duplicated any of the text Layers it was named the next sequencially higher number
This pattern of renaming was only broken by typing in a number where the leading digit was anther value up i.e. 4329
Then the duplicating of the text layer would start naming the with this value plus 1.
Same thing happens if you split the text layer
I think this is a bug or bad programming.  this can lead to unnecessary confusion if you working on a project with number text layers and have to duplicate, many of them or many times.  Or is the answer to pre compose the text layer before duplicating --- NO that has its own shotcomings.
    CS5.5 on a Mac Os 10.6.8

I found a solution.   Rename the Text layer by adding a space before or after the numerals.  Now the duplicates are named as the written text with a suffix  increased by 1 for each additional duplicated layer.

  • Pre-Compose Breaks Project

    Hello All,
So I've been working on a large project in AE for quite some time now.  I had gotten to the point where I was ready to do some final touches and all hell broke loose.
There were several section of the project that were too fast (ie - did not sit on an infographic long enough).  So I decided I would pre-compose the project and time map the sections I needed to be slower.  When I pre-composed it hung up for a minute and then started telling me (pop-up after pop-up) that layers were missing and layers were disabled ect ect.  This was bad news so I thought I would just hit undo (very hard to do between all the unending pop ups of missing or disabled layers).  The only way to undo was to hit Cntl+Z right after I hit "Ok" on a pop up box.  However the next ok box was just before an auto save.  I was still able to undo but this didnt undo the pre-compose.
    Where I am at now:
Nothing in the project is anywhere near what it was supposed to be.  All of my controller layers are missing or incorrect.  My adjustment layers are gone. The list goes on.
What broke.. and how do I fix it?

The problem was that It saved right after the precomp was made on its own.  I've been going through it and looking at everything (crying deep inside the whole time).  There are 10 Compositions each with 30-40 more compositions inside with some comps going 5-6 deep.  There is a total of around 800 layers or so.. none of that really matter aside from the controllers (These are the ones that are really messing everything up).  Some stuff was changed a lot and I've no idea how (colors for effects, keyframes, sizes, and shapes).
It is looking like I may just need to take the rest of the week off and go on vacation... ha.. ha..
Anyway, I've saved a version of the current file I am working on separate from the save that happened during the precomp destruction.  I'd have a hard time giving an accurate flowchart and there were around 30 error messages.  Is there a way I can look up those messages?

  • I clicked on Firefox's "save password" on a blogsite, now I can't "comment" on that site, I'm caught in a loop, keep getting logged out of that site when I try to comment, but not a problem when I try Explorer.

When I navigate to the page to view comments and leave a comment myself, the comments appear but the link to leave a comment is missing, and my username and password is pre-populated in those fields (presumable by the Firefox "save password" program)on that "comment" page. When I click "submit" to log in again, I am logged in but redirected back to the front page. When I click on the page that allows me to leave a comment, I get kicked out again. I'm caught in a loop.
I do not have this problem when I exit Firefox and open Internet Explorer and go to that blog site, although the username and password fields are automatically populated when I type the first digit of my username, probably because Firefox is still operating in the background on my computer.
I tried clearing two hours of recent history, as that was the timeline when I clicked on "Save Password" from the pop up box, but it didn't help.
