Problem with 160GB Classic

So, I just recently installed the new 1.1 update for my 160Gb Classic. Everything worked fine. Then I started to apply some EQ's to songs (which I had not previously done) and iTunes froze up. I managed to end the task and quit iTunes and used the eject storage device icon on the bottom toolbar on my computer to eject my iPod. After saying it was "OK to disconnect", I did and the iPod clicked, shut down and came back on saying I had no music. However, when I plugged it back into iTunes, it showed that all the space my music had previously taken up was now listed as "Other". I don't want to have to re-load all my music. Can anyone help me?
Here are my stats:
Windows
iTunes 7.5
iPod Classic 160GB
HP Computer

The easy way is just to do a restore. In the future, I wouldn't work on my iTunes library files while the iPod is connected. It seems to me that iTunes already uses a HUGE chunk of system resources, and having the iPod connected just uses even more. Then when you start changing ID3 tags ("Get Info"), it can really cause the system to CHUG. If you don't believe me, try just changing one ID3 tag on a 1.5GB movie file. iTunes practically takes over the computer until it's darned good and ready to do something else.
Or, I'd download [Tagger|http://tvtagger.wordpress.com>, which doesn't use nearly as many resources as iTunes, and allows you to edit many more ID3 fields than iTunes does.

  • Serious iTunes sync problems with 160GB classic

Upgraded to 10.6.4 and iTunes 9.2 at the same time last night.
The classic connects fine and shows up in iTunes, but when I click sync it starts beachballing. Other suggestions to leave if for 10 minutes did not work, as it was still spinning about 45 minutes later.
Downgraded to iTunes 9.0 and used the previous iTunes library...still beachballing just the same.
The iPod itself does not seem to be corrupted (yet), despite me force quitting iTunes about 3 times trying to get it to work.
It doesn't appear to be copying anything to the iPod because the free space hasn't changed at all. iTunes seems to unfreeze for a split second about once every 5-10 minutes, causing the OS to jump to the Space I have allocated for my iTunes, but it instantly begins beachballing again. If music is playing when I click sync, it continues playing while iTunes beachballs – so it's just the syncing part that is causing the app to crash.
I have not tried to sync the library via another computer yet, but I do not want to do this as this is my main computer.
    Thanks in advance

I purchased an iPad on Saturday and upgraded to iTunes 9.2 as recommended. Seemed to be working fine. However when I connected my 160gb iPod Classic to sync my latest music that's when the problems began.
First attempt it mounted the ipod successfully but beach balled after 30 seconds and then refused to respond.
After force quitting iTunes and reconnecting the iPod this time iTunes spent 15 minutes attempting to verify iPod before beachballing again. Attempted this several times with the same result.
Never had any such issues with any previous versions of iTunes. Reading this forum (and others) it seems many many people are experiencing identical problems. As it stands I can't sync any of my last weeks videos, music or podcasts. We need a fix for this asap!

  • Sync contacts/calendar problem with 160gb classic

I've been unable to successfully sync contacts and calendars with my Windows PC (running XP).
I am using software version 1.1.1 and iTunes version 7.6.0.29.
When I try and sync with my Outlook calendar, the iPod/iTunes appears to be syncing. When I disconnect the iPod and look in the calendar, no events are saved. When trying to sync contacts, I check the "sync contacts from" box and then pull down to "microsoft outlook". As soon as I attempt to hit the "microsoft outlook" pull-down, iTunes freezes. I've not had any issues syncing music, podcasts, etc.
Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Intermittent problem with 160GB Classic

If you have a car you'll know the worst problem is an intermittent fault because of the difficulty of working out the cause. Any advice sorting out the following would be gratefully appreciated.
"Event 1" (ca. 2 weeks ago): synch'd iPOd as normal - wasn't watching everything as I didn't expect any problems but certain everything was done properly (ie. didn't disconnect prematurely). But I did notice that a set of tracks on which I was certain I had not changed the ID3 tags was still included in the set of tracks included in the Stage 2 of 2 synching process. Struck me as strange at the time but thought nothing of it. Put the iPod on a docking station and it wouldn't play - ie. time count for track was static. Navigation wheel worked OK so I could move through the menu structure to check I hadn't inadvertently changed settings. Resynch'ed it straight away but when I took the iPod off the PC the navigation wheel wouldn't work and I couldn't turn it off (ie. prolonged press on "6 o'clock" position on the wheel). Had to leave it on overnight. Came back in the morning and screen off so assumed the battery was drained. Synch'd to PC in the evening and battery charge icon was displayed BUT it charged within 2-4 minutes, so must have shut down during previous night even though navigation wheel was out of service. Resynch'd and everything seemed to be OK for a fortnight, during which I downloaded about half a dozen MP3 tracks and resynch'd them to the iPod without any recurrence of the problem.
"Event 2": being aware of the past problems I noticed tonight that synch-ing process didn't open up Windows Explorer. This happens normally and opens on the logical drive the iPod is connected to (usually J:). This drive has to be closed (on an MS machine) before you can disconnect. Again I noticed that during phase 2 of the synch. process the same set of tracks from the same album referred to above were updated even though I am 100% certain none of the relevant ID3 tags had been changed. Noticed this but complete the synch. as normal and put the iPod on the docking station. Same problem as in first part of "event 1": controls worked but wouldn't play. Went back to iTunes and deleted the tracks from the CD that seemed to be re-synch'd unnecessarily. Then connected the iPod to re-synch again and it seemed to be OK (for now!).
So can anyone please help me to isolate the problem. Is it in the iPod or iTunes, or something latent in a particular CD which I have quarantined by deleting the relevant MP3 tracks?
Thanks in anticipation of any light you can shed because I am floundering around in the dark.

  • [PLEASE HELP!] Problems with iPod Classic 160GB.

Okay, I was about to sync my iPod Classic 160GB and go to bed. I plugged it in and everything was good. I am not sure if it was syncing yet, but it fell off the cord because my HP laptop moved. I wasn't worried at the time, The apple screen came up so I pressed Middle Button+Menu to reset it, then I plugged it back in. When I plugged it back in it said I had to format the drive in G.. The screen of the iPod said Connected Eject before disconnecting and had the circle arrows like when it is loading. It seems to be working fine when I unplug it.
But anyways, When I unplugged it a second time (I did click Disconnect in the toolbar on the actual device, not in iTunes) it didn't work again, and it brought up the grey apple screen again, then went to the language. so I plugged it back in. Then I said OK to the reformat. I clicked Default settings to the format and left the Volume Label blank because I don't know what that is...
It said WARNING: Formatting your iPod will delete all files on it, or something along the lines of that. so, I said okay, I'll just resync it, just get on the reformat. When I clicked format it said that it couldn't format my iPod... So, once again, I disconnected it, ejecting from the actual device in the toolbar, and it was absolutely cleared asking me for the Language. It keeps doing this every time I plug it in, and even when I switch USB slots. it wont read into my iTunes either.
I am really sad, and please answer because my iPod is basically my life, this is my worst nightmare come true.
    PLEASE ANSWER QUICK, Thanks...

  • Multiple problems with 80GB classic, don't know where to start.

    Hey guys,
I got an Apple classic 80GB for my bday early August and lately i've been having so many problems i dont know where to start, i'll try to explain them as best as i can.
*problem 1:* Whenever i plug my iPod into my PC, it locks up the system for about 5 minutes, then comes up with an error box saying that 'There is a problem with your iPod yadda yadda restore etc'.
I proceed to restore the iPod, then once its restored and reconnects itself, it repeats the cycle by freezing then telling me to restore. The only way i can do a restore and have it not give me an error is if i reboot when it is disconnected.
*Problem 2:* When i finally get it up and ready to sync, i go to sync all my files (About 2000 songs). It gets to around the 1500 song mark then says there is an error and the iPod disconnects itself.
It then instantaneously reconnects itself and starts syncing from where it left off.
Once it has then sync'd all of the music ad tells me its ready to be ejected. I eject the iPod and disconnected it.
I then go into the iPod and it has no songs/videos/photos, yet it has still used up about 15gb. If i reconnect it, it will just sit there for 5 minutes not syncing, it will then randomly say the sync is done and it will eject itself.
FINALLY after all that i have my music on there
*Problem 3* Once the songs are on the iPod, it becomes insanely laggy. If i navigate to a song and press play, it will take about 10 seconds for the actual song to play. The delay is just as bad for next song, pause etc. Even using it in my cars head unit causes it to lag.
*Problem 4* If i do get a song playing after all that, about 1/5 songs will just randomly skip to the next song without letting it play through.
I have all the latest iTunes/Firmware/Drivers for everything on my PC and iPod.
I have sent it back to Apple for repair yet they could not find anything wrong (Yeah right :|)
If anyone out there could help me please, im at my wits end with this infernal machine.
    Thankyou

*Outdated operating system:* Cant be, im running XP SP3 with the latest updates
*Computer needs updates:* I've got the latest drivers for all of my hardware, including BIOS
*Software interference:* THe only other program i have running in the background is Kaspersky Antivirus, but that is disabled when i try to sync
*Damaged Files* Possibly, i played through the album where it froze at and even reo-imported it, it seemed to play and import fine
*Unregistered .dll files (Windows):* Tried this fix, but it did the same problems as the original post. Such as freezing on a certain song, then reconnecting itself only to put the music on there, yet it is really laggy
*Damaged disk structure:* Tried this fix, didn't help
*Corrupt iPod photo Cache* I have never tried to put photos on it, so i dont see how this could be it.
*Lost connection:* Checked it, it's very firm and unlikely to come loose.
*Conflict with third-party hardware:* I dont have any connected, nor have i ever
*Bad hardware:* I tried it on all of my 8 USB drives. I dont use any hubs or firewire cards so this couldn't be it.
Also i forgot to add that 1/5 times i go to restore, it locks the computer up and windows gives me a 'delayed write failed' bubble

  • Shuffle problems with 120gb classic

    Hi all,
I was on my morning run and put my ipod 120gb classic on shuffle so it would shuffle through my nearly 4000 songs and then after it played 5 songs it started just flicking to the next song etc without playing it??!! Turned it off and then back on but same thing plays 5 songs normally then just flicks through the rest without playing them?!! VERY annoying! Hasn't happened before and I've had it since October. Also in the last few days it has stopped showing album art and my photos in the main menu?? Does anyone have a soloution or is this just another of what seems myriad of problems with the new classic?

This just happened to me after having my 120GB Ipod for 2 weeks. What I did was I clicked on "Restore" when the ipod is connected. It removes all your music and restores the ipod back to factory settings. Then I loaded everything back on. It's a pain in the neck but it worked.

  • Unusual syncing problem with ipod Classic

I recently bought a new 160 Gb ipod Classic and the first one that came seemed to sync all my music but as soon as I removed the cable I got an Apple screen and an unresponsive ipod. Eventually Apple swapped it for a second ipod. I found it difficult to get this one to work properly although the hard disk on this one hadn't failed like the first one.
I did have to restore the new ipod at least twice and after the second time I decided not to sync all my music at once as before but selected a few genres to start with and it worked fine so I gradually selected more and more genres each time I synced it until I had all my music on the ipod. So all was fine.
After using the ipod for a couple of weeks or so with this I decided to try and sync the ipod by selecting All the music rather than by genre. As all the music was already on the ipod this didn't take very long to sync. As I normally play the music on random shuffle I selected shuffle and what happened next I've never seen before but the track that was about to be played appeared on the screen but didn't start playing. As I pressed the play button the track wouldn't play but the ipod jumped to the start of the next track and just kept doing that without playing anything.
I then stopped this and decided to sync the ipod as before by selecting all the genres. When this was done the ipod then played normally as before. While this is fine I'd like to be able to sync my ipod by selecting all the music as I've been doing for years with my old ipod Classic 80 Gb. Is there anyone who can explain what might be causing this problem to occur?

Ok here goes, after 6 weeks of restoring, resetting, putting device into manual scan, manually resetting, downloading itunes older versions, newer versions and all around fighting my ipod; I have had the same results. When restoring through itunes the ipod is "still named", now one would think when doing a full system restore on the ipod via itunes it would do a full restore and the name would be no longer existent, so not the case. I have gotten multiple error messages, this is the most prevalent, "The "ipod name" cannot be synced. A duplicate file name was specified", another is in order for this ipod to work you must restore with itunes. I am thinking that there is problem with the new software, you see yesterday I set up a computer that has XP and itunes 7, the sync went without a hitch, no freezes, no long pauses, no problems. Then I made the mistake of hitting the button to update itunes "newer version", rediculous mistake. All of the problems are as pevalent as before, ipod will not sync, manually I can add movies and music but no more than 264 songs will add. My question is, why did Apple create this very nice, durable large player if they do not have the capability to serve they customers with the correct software?

  • Problems with installing classic 9 with panther

    hi folks
i recently purchased a used G4 466 power mac with 10.3.9 panther and wanted to run some older apps from my older 8500 tower but noticed to run the apps i need classic environment installed. cool no problem. i have the 9.0, 9.1, & 9.2 discs in hand. problem is i can't get them installed. i even went to hold down "C" key while starting booting up but nothing different. open up the disc on any of the 3 that i have and hit install (unsure why apple put 2 install icons on each disc) and a pop up asks me if i want to start classic... sure ok..
now i have a pop up saying " there is a problem with the Mac OS 9 system folder you selected. to select another system folder, click open classic preferences. sure ok...
it locates the disc i have in the a drop down pop up comes up saying " no classic sstem folder. you do not have a version of mac os 9 installed that supports classic. install mac os 9.1 or later.
i only have panther on the system on not on disc so i hope that's not an issue to come. anyways i'm going to try booting from disc again hoping i didn't miss anything but i anyone has got some feedback on this i'd be truly grateful.
    Glimmerdrive

Hi, Glimmerdrive. The installer application on your OS 9 installer discs only runs in OS 9, not in OS X — so it's essential for you to start the computer from one of those discs in order to run the installer. If you start up from your hard drive in OS X, and then insert the discs and try to run them, you'll get nowhere, as you've discovered.
The G4/466 Digital Audio model was shipped with an installer CD containing a model-specific version of OS 9.1. It can't start up from a retail OS 9.0 or 9.1 installer CD, but a retail OS 9.2.1 disc will boot it. There is no retail 9.2.2 installer disc, so the one you have is specific to some other Mac model, and can't be used on the DA G4. All this means, unfortunately, that the threeOS 9 discs you have are useless to you (unless the 9.1 disc is the one that was originally shipped with your computer.) You'll need either to get that originaldisc or buy a retail 9.2.1 installer.

  • Any charging problems with the classic?

I recently bought a new 6th gen nano to use mostly in my car. I have an Alpine deck with the ipod connector cable. Everything works fine except that it wont charge when connected to my car.
So i've done a bit of searching and that seems to be a common problem with the new nano's. People are having trouble charging them with anything other than their computers.
I am going to return the nano and would like to get a classic to try. Has anyone experienced any problems with charging the latest classic on docks, wall chargers, in their cars, etc?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • BMW 335i ipod interface connection problem with ipod classic 80GB

Hi all, i have a 2007 BMW 335i with dealer installed ipod interface, and i been using it since, it's simply i just connect ipod with the cable in the glove compartment and leave it there, and it charges and stanby, when i start up the car the audio jumps right to where i left off on the ipod and it also let me control it with iDrive. after about one and half year of usage, i think there is something wrong with my ipod or i dont know for sure, well here is the problem, when i start the car it will play music from the ipod and i can control it from iDrive and everything but after about 5-10 mins, the music stop, and my iDrive shows weird playlist, and i need to unplug the ipod and replug again to have it connect and then it will stop by itself, after 5-10 mins, any of you guys have a bmw with the ipod interface have this problem?? i dont really know if it's my ipod problem or my bmw ipod interface problem. anyone can help me with this? thank you!

That is most likely going to be a problem with your iPod, not the interface.
Have you tried Resetting the iPod? (hold down the menu and center buttons for six seconds).
If that fails to work, try Restoring the iPod in iTunes.

  • Problem with 6700 Classic

    Hi,
I'm having a rather annoying problem with my phone. I have software v 07.60, and no updates are available.
When i "Select Shortcuts" in the Shortcut bar, and try to access the "Application List", my phone crashes.
Does anybody have an idea? I would really appreciate the help, this is driving me crazy.

I have been in contact with Nokia Care and here's what they've said so far:
    Backup your phone
    Do a factory reset
    Test if it works
Restore the phone from the backup
    Test once more
If it still works, then fine. If it fails at step 3, call again. If it fails at step 5, repeat from 2 and skip the restore.
The story from techsupport is that there's two basic possibilities.
    a. A software problem, a factory reset should solve this.
    b. A hardware problem (should fail at step 3), probably the phone memory. The phone would need service.
Anyhow. Will backup and reset the phone when I get back home since I left the USB-cable there.

  • Persistent problem with 6500 Classic

    Hello.
First I want to apologize if this is the wrong place for my problem.
I buyed my Nokia in the end of 2007. Since then I have problem with my earpiece and ringer. From time to time when listening music in the begining of the song the sound becomes really bad, nothing can be understand. To fix the problem you have to change the song or stop it and play it again. The same thing happens and when you talk with somebody. When I dial somebody sometimes the sound becomes really bad and I can't understand him and he also can't understand me. I have to dial him again. The same thing happens when somebody dial me, but again not always. The mentioned problems occur on about every 10th song and call, sometime in less time, sometime after couple of days, a week.
The phone go in repair. First time from the magazine said to me that there wasn't such a problem. The second and the third time they said to me that the problem is solved and earpiece and ringer are changed, but the problem continues. I get my Nokia from repair today. The problem continues. I don't know what to do.
    Please can somebody help me.

I think this is done intentionally in case you are using one of the application. You don't want it to lock while you are using something.
There is a shortcut to the standby screen though. While you are in one of the applications, you can press the red End Call button to close everything down and return you to the standby screen.
    Hope this helps.

  • Weird problems with ipod classic 80gb, hdd's gone?

Hi, hope u could help me.
Excuse my not fluent english, I'm not british/american so I will try to make myself as clear as possible. Thanks
First of all, got iPod classic 80gb, systems Vista/XP, was trying to cope with this problem on both computers, but ran out of ideas, so decided to make a topic on Apple forum.
Few days ago my iPod was working fine, then I put some stuff on it (put them in 'Notes', using iPod as a pendrive) and weird things started to happen. Maybe it has something to do with it, don't know, but will try to write as many details as possible.
When I connect my iPod to the computer (i tried on 3 computers), every time my Windows doesn't recognize an iPod (computer sees something has been connected, but doesn't see what). So if I go to 'Computer' I even do not see an iPod disc.
I can't open iTunes when iPod is connected, but once I disconnect my iPod, iTunes opens immediately. If I open iTunes before connecting an iPod, iTunes works fine but it can't see an iPod as well. (I used an option with checking connection with iPod but it sees nothing unfortunetely).
Later, when I want to disconnect my iPod using 'safe remove hardware' it doesn't work, just hangs.. so I have to unplug my iPod and once I do it, it immediately appears 'USB xxxxx now can be disconnect safely' (something like that, very similiar to the iTunes case).
When I disconnect my iPod, it just hangs showing 'Connected, do not disconnect', sth like that, so I got to restart it and then works fine.
My iPod works fine without connecting to the computer, everything is just fine.
Any ideas? Already tried to reset settings on iPod and tried to re-install iTunes, but I guess problems lays somewhere beetween iPod and computer which doesn't see my iPod.. Also I tried to re-install USB slots/drivers, didn't help.
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers, Robert.

When I had Windows XP on a Lenovo, I also had a U2 20Gb iPod...The problem was, believe it or not, the battery! I took it to ipodrepair in Toronto, and they said there was some servo or switch that was blown. It couldn't charge properly and when it was connected to the computer, it went into limbo - not able to charge, not able to load the ipod.
So, check with repair if you can...It may be the battery, even on a new one!
    Good Luck!

  • Problem with 80GB classic it won't be recognised on itunes or my computer

My girlfriend told me that her pod had suddenly stopped working on her and was telling her that she had to restore it within her itunes, when she tried this the computer wouldn't recognise that there was even anything there. Later trying the same ipod on my computer i found that it wouldn't recognise the device on there either. I've heard alot of things about the 80GB classics suddenly stopping working when itunes is updated is this the same problem?
    Message was edited by: Famous101

I'm having the same problem. Been struggling to get 80gb Ipod Classic to work with Windows XP. I've gone through 4 Ipod Restores, and just when I think it's stable, some new issue rears it's head. Initially, I was convinced that I had a corrupted Itunes library, as eventually during a sync, Itunes would get stuck on some random file, and I would have to pre-emptively disconnect. Eventually, this would corrupt the database files on my Ipod, and it would start up fine, but say it had no content on it (but with, say, 60gb free). So I cleared my library and database files (my documents > my music). started from scratch basically. Since doing this, syncing has been fine for the past month...Now (started two days ago), connecting my Ipod to my computer, Itunes won't see it. On the Ipod, it shows "Do not disconnect" screen, and then "Ok to Disconnect" screen immediately. Last night, I experimented, connecting and disconnecting the Ipod to my computer, and eventually Itunes did recognize it (seems hit-or-miss), but then during the sync it eventually got stuck syncing a file, and I had to pre-emptively disconnect. Luckily, it did not erase/screw up the library on my Ipod.
Another issue, I have is that Podcasts, never show in the outermost Main menu. The only way to access podcasts on my Ipod Classic, is to put them all in a playlist. Any one else with this problem?
