Problem with 8800GT + MSI G31TM-P21

For a while now, I've been using an 8800GT + MSI G31TM-P21 as a secondary gaming system. This has been working admirably for a few months. Lately though, I've moved the board to a new case+PSU, have changed out the RAM and added a new hard drive. Now, I'm starting to have problems. The system will boot with the 8800GT + WinXP, but is sluggish and crashes (usually a crash to desktop instead of a complete lockup) within 5 minutes of launching a 3d game. The 8800GT works fine in another system - it stood up fine to an extended gaming session on a different P35 board. I loaded Win8 just for testing purposes, and the display driver crashed just doing desktop operations. I also ran Memtest86+ for about 12 hours on the RAM with no failures. The head scratcher is that an even more ancient Radeon X1800 GTO seems to work fine with the MSI board. System config is below:
MSI G31TM-P21 (not sure about BIOS rev)
Intel Pentium Dual-core E5500 @ 2.8GHz
2x2GB Kingston Value RAM 800MHz DDR2 (dual channel)
LG DVD+RW
2x7200RPM drives and one 5000+ RPM "Green" drive
Windows XP SP3 32-bit
Arrow "500w MAX" PSU
A bit more about the PSU - it's a cheap, older model with a 20-pin power connector. As I understand it (and I could be wrong) the extra 4 pins just power the PCIe video card, which are unnecessary since the video card has a power cable all its own. This setup worked fine in my old case, with an even older PSU. I guess my next step would be to resurrect my old 300w PSU and see if it works properly, but I wanted to see if anyone else had any ideas before I tear my case apart. BTW, there is no overclocking going on anywhere in this setup...
UPDATE: Took a closer look at the old PSU, and it was an Allied/Apex 300 watt with (get this) 10 amps on the +12v rail. Nonetheless the 8800GT seemed to work fine on it. The "new" PSU has 17 amps on the +12v rail.

That $25 Arrow 500W with +12V~17A is a joke. Any decent 500W PSU should have at least +12V~30A. I wouldn't trust that thing any further that I could throw it and at my age that's not very far. Even a Corsair 3 year old VX450W that I have has +12V~33A. You need minimum of +12V~26A for system with that graphics card to begin with, see the chart here: https://forum-en.msi.com/faq/article/power-requirements-for-graphics-cards. You're lucky that PSU you had before worked at all in your system.
Get a Corsair PSU, a CX430W V2 +12V~28A would do but better would be the CX500 V2 +12V~34A. Even more power would be needed if you intend to upgrade to later and greater more power hungry VGA card any time soon.. See the Corsairs here:

  • MSI G31TM-P21

Recently purchased a MSI G31TM-P21 and a Celeron e3400 wolfdale.  The board is listed as supporting this cpu but on newegg I found a review stating that there was a problem with this cpu and the bios resulting in a bios flash to resolve the problem.  Is this still a problem to anyones knowledge? And if so how can i flash the bios to get these two components to work together?  Thank you in advance.

So long as the motherboard's BIOS is updated to version 4.5 it will work fine. >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<
    See if it boots first.

  • Problems with a MSI K8N

So yeah I just bought alot of computer parts including this motherboard. I have my computer area downstairs in my house but I have a spare monitor in my room. After I finished installing everything I pluged the case into the wall and hooked it up. I proceeded to turn the power on and noticed the "NEO PLATNIUM" on the screen I figured everything was working so I turned the power off not thinking it would mess the bios up and took it downstairs and pluged it in again with my real monitor and computer set up. I tried to power it on again and it shut off in like 5-10 seconds I proceeded doing this about 4 times everytime it shut off so I took it back up stairs to see if something became unplugged. From then on I couldnt even get it to turn back on. My case showed a green light but when I pushed power It didnt work. I tried clearing the cmos with no success. I'm hoping somehow you guys will know what to do.
    Thanks for you time.

Hey man, I feel your pain, and I feel obligated to post this because of the way everybody else is treating the problem.
Let me point this out to everybody:
This guy knows what he's doing, he isn't doing anything stupid.  This IS a problem with this MSI board.  How do I know?  Because my computer setup is doing the exact same thing.  I've been through 2 boards and 3 CPU's now.  My setup worked fine for 2 weeks, then one day it just stopped working.  It turns on for 5 seconds, then just turns itself off.  It does not post.  D-Bracket claims it is a bad or badly seated CPU.  It lies.  I just put in a brand new working CPU today, and i'm getting the same issue.  It IS the motherboard.  Now I just have to get it fixed from MSI somehow.  I feel comforted knowing i'm not the only one with this problem.  I just replied to some other guys post about having this issue.
I just posted my issue on another motherboard, but I will post it here as well for you all to read so that you know this issue is more widespread than it may seem.
Boy, what a ride this has been so far.
Let me briefly explain the issue. Got a the motherboard and a XP64 3200+ from newegg.com, etc. Plug it all together - nothing. I've built plenty of systems, and i've built several using thet MSI K8N board, also. I discover that the RAM is bad and the motherboard is also bad. Repeat as necessary several times.
Long story short, I'm on CPU #3 and Mobo #2, soon to be #3.
The 1st CPU was returned because a friend was working on the system and pulled the heatsink off and the CPU stuck to the bottom of the heatsink and some of the pins got bent/broke. (This is due to the poor design of the heatsink holder on the MSI board. There is WAY too much surface area between the heatsink and the CPU for the heatsink to be enclosed how it is on this board.. trying to pull them apart like that is just impossible. It can't be done. It has to be at an angle. . Only way).
Now, after we got the motherboard RMA'd and bought a new CPU, everything worked fine and dandy.
Two weeks later, one day the system just won't boot. There is no video signal at all. The problem is that when the system turns on, it runs for about 7 seconds.. all the fans turn on, etc. and then it just turns itself off.
I've tried different power supplies, i've tried only with the CPU, Mobo, and RAM, and hell, i've even tried it without the RAM. I've tried it out of the case, to check for shorts. Nothing. I've checked the power switch to be sure it isn't being stuck on, it's not. There is no reason, whatsoever for the computer to do this. The Diagnosis LED Lights show all 4 red which means badly seated or damaged CPU. Ok. So I RMA the CPU. I just get it back today, and we're on the 3rd CPU now. Plugged it all together.. brand new CPU. The old one obviously didn't work or else they wouldn't have RMA'd this one to us. They should have tested this one first too, I think.
    SAME PROBLEM.
The computer turns on, lights fans etc. come on, and 7 seconds later the computer shuts down. There are no BIOS beep codes, no video signals, NOTHING.
This really only leaves me with one conclusion - the motherboard is bad. There are only 2 choices, CPU or Motherboard, and the CPU is brand new.. and the problem was the same with the last one ... common denomonator is the motherboard. Now its been so long waiting for the RMA on the CPU and everything ... plus the 2 weeks that this motherboard worked, that newegg probably won't take back the motherboard. My only real options is to send it to MSI for repair or something.
This is a very sad day. The only thing I can think would have happened is that the motherboard had some kind of voltage issue to the CPU.. maybe some kind of electric jolt that damaged the CPU socket and the CPU itself so that now nothing works. I'm most afraid that the motherboard is damaging the CPU's.. and that this new one we just put in could be damaged from the motherboard also.
These things are expensive... I can't afford for all this to keep going. I've easily spent $150 - $200 doing RMA's for all this ****. It's just ****ing rediculous. I should win an award for most computer problems.
Before I start freaking out about this even more, let me get to the point of this post.
Has anybody else experienced something like this? Specifically with this board? With something else? What the hell can I do about this, or is my only option the motherboard.. as far as I can tell.. it can't be anything else.

  • Video problem after hibernation on g31tm-p21

    Hi everyone,
The G31TM-P21 board is 3 days old and I am using the Internal video mode.  I just finished installing Win 7 and everything is working perfectly except for one thing, I cannot put the computer in sleep mode (S3 setting in BIOS).  Once the computer is awaken, the screen is defective but still readible for about 5 minutes.  Past 5 minutes, everything is perfect.
While the screen was still defective, I rebooted the computer and the screen defects were still visible in the BIOS setup screens. CTR-ALT-DEL did not clear the defect.  Turning off the computer and restarting it still showed the defects.  The only things to clear the defects are to: unplug the computer for 5 sec or wait 5 minutes.
    These are my tests/thoughts:
This is not a driver error as the defects are still visible once rebooted and in the BIOS Setup menu.
As it last for only 5 minutes, I suspected a temperature issue but the board is running at 30C and I would wait for 8 hrs before waking up the computer and still see the defects.  Therefore, not a temperature issue.  It looks like the Hibernate state leaves the video chip in a screwed mode.
The only 2 things to correct the screen defects are wait 5 minutes(computer running in BIOS setup screen or Win7) or unpluging the computer for 5 sec.
I reinstalled the BIOS from MSI with the same results. BIOS version is 4.7
I suspect there is a bug in the BIOS, my BIOS setting is wrong or the board is defective.
If you have any suggestions, please go ahead otherwise I will RMA the board within a week.
    Thanks
    Varso

My computer is a standard Acer Aspire M6540 computer. All parts are original from the 2 years old computer except for the motherboard which died on me and had to be replaced with the G31TM-P21. I have never overclocked or modified the computer and it is now working perfectly with the G31TH-P21 board as long as I do not put in in the sleep mode.  I believe the original Acer MB was from MSI.

  • Problem with my MSI P35 Neo MotherBoard [Cannot find harddrive]

    Hi guys.
So, I've been trying to install Archlinux for a while now, and I've been trying to figure out what problem Is by myself, and I've been asking a bunch of people, but it seems that it's going to a dead end.
What we figured out, and what we "think" it is, is that the controller on my motherboard does not support the system, and my SATA disk that I am trying to install on.
What i have tried is that.. I've followed the "beginners guide" to install arch linux, and when i noticed that i got a big problem with my harddrive i asked some people for help, tough we cannot figure out what the problem is..
Firstly i boot up with my ArchLinux CD.. Then i write km, to change the keyboard layout. Then /arch/setup ofcourse . After that when i try to partitionate and set mountpoints for filsystem it does not show any kind of hardware at all. So i tried to partitionate with gparted and then boot up with Archlinux again to install all my packages etc etc. But it seems like it does not write the information to anything.
This is a big problem for me cause i really want my Arch distribution to work, so please guys.. Help me!
    EDIT
Just in case you wanted to know.. My motherboard is a MSI P35 Neo

  • Problems with my msi ge70 2Pe-042BE

Hello guys, i have some problems with my 1 year old msi laptop
Problem 1: First of all the ventilator ( i think it's the ventilator) makes a constant buzzing/zooming sound. It is not that noticeable but this is not the biggest problem.
Problem 2 : The biggest problem i have is that my google chrome keeps freezing. I tried to search it to google how to fix it but not any tutorial worked out for me . I have got this problem for around 2-3 months ( before everything was working out). Mozilla firefox + internet explorer works fine for me but i hate these internet browsers by heart.
PRoblem 3 : if i look to my estimated usage of wifi it seems like i am using alot of mb althought i am not downloading, utorrent is not open , my skype is not open so i don't understand what is going on .
Problem 4 : since some days my internet is randomly disconnecting for 2 seconds while my brother has no problems ( yes he sometimes has ping spikes just like me at the same time but he does not disconnect) ( our chambers are next to eachother). I tried to search it on google but again almost no results ( some people said to update drivers or something , i am not the best in laptops/computers so i don't know  what to do)
Thanks for reading and i hope someone can help me . ( also is there a way to 'boost' your perfomances from your msi because it seems like it doesn't have the best perfomances for the price i paid and i don't have alot of programs/movies installed. Neither do i have a virus

for the wifi issue, try to disable the power saving feature of your wifi card. Go device manager and click on the card. find the power management tab.

It is underperforming really hard on LoL and sometimes WoW, Just need some help trouble shooting this problem.
Here is my specs: GTX 770 I believe it is the.. N770 TF 2GD5/OC
    CPU: AMD FX-8350
    PSU: 550 Watt Gold
    SSD
I'm getting between 48-90 FPS on leagues... I have downloaded the NVidia Drivers.. and can not figure this problem out. Any help?

The specs are quite useless to be honest. Follow >>Posting Guide<< exactly.
And the problem with the FPS reported is? It doesn't look bad.

  • Major weird problems with new msi p6n diamond

okay let me start with my specs
    q6700
    gskill pc8000 memory. 2gigs.  tryin for 8gigs
right now single 150gig hdd.  4x150 gig raptor
    dual 8800gts in sli
    enermax galaxy 1kw psu
    bigwater 760i water cooling
okay. well i built the computer about 2 weeks ago and since then its been nothing but problems. first i built it liek normal and didn't know about the patch for more memory. So after knowing that i used the patch and was able to boot vista 64bit. then the fun started. I havent been able to do anything related to 3d work since i built it. i used the latest drivers. I used the ones from the first reviews of the 8800gt. I used only one card. etc. Nothing works. wow freezes up. Age of empire 3 ad 2 freezes or plays at like 4 fps.  3dmark cant run at all. I finally got it stable to run and it only gives me 3000 for a score in 03.   I decided to boot up with my old 1900xtx and sure enough after putting the new ati drivers. 22000 on 3dmark 03 and even crysis atleast runs well enough to play. I have a single slot intel board which i got with my bundle and havent tried but i was about too. I have the memory set at the manual settings it asked for. also did auto and most basic things possible. nothign seems to work. has there been any issues with the gt's. what other help can y'all give me.

It looks like power cable(s) is not plugged to VGA(doesn't get enough power and slowdown{decrease freq. automatically})
    (Provide screenshot from Everest(http://www.lavalys.com:8081/beta/everestultimate_build_1217_x0cm3svydaq.zip)GPU page.
Have you tried with each one of them (you said that have 2x8800GT) individually? If yes does it happend there too?
    Test VGA in another machine.

Use Driver Sweeper(http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1655) to remove currently drivers.(Make sure that you have installed chipset drivers 1st)

Its not a Virus, i have virus checked the hardrive, i tryed with a smaller harddrive (6 gb and win 95) and that worked, i bought a new harddrivce (120 gb) Started to format and install Win XP pro and it starts to reboot again, i have tryed chagne memmorys, graphic adapter, net adapter, soundcard everything, i am going nuts! anyone had probs like this??
I would be more than greatfull if anyone has an answer to this.

Thanks a lot Wonkanoby for the help. It didnt help my error but it sure cleared it up. There were several capacitor that leaked, just as the pics on the site you sent  http://www.overclockers.com/tips00140/, it shows clearly on thoose. Cant beleive how that problem can be so big and seems like they are doing nothing about it either.

So next i did (dumb me hehe) i try OC my CPU with All-suit II from ASUS to OC cpu extreme mode which stress test untill stable clock is found.
Got a crash bluescreen and then after few attemps stable 4.3.
Then did new benchmark and my score was alot lower and nomatter what i try my 290x did not pass 60fps any more and score dropped to 2100?

My questions is how can o solve this problem it seems my motherbaord don't reconize my videocard anymore?
Also posible that something with the OC attemp CPU broke something?
I also try change from AUTO to GEN3 in bios but then i get a blackscreen when i boot up it stays backscreen, have to change it switch videocards so i can see my boot again and go into BIOS.
Im at a lost here, hope one of you know a solution or whats my problem?
Hope ive supply enough info im bit of a newbie at this sorry for that.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello
i 've just bought a Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 800W
    and a mobo msi z77 mpower(today)
    i have this problem
i have tested the psu with 2 different mobo (the msi stated before and a asus p8z77 v pro) and in both cases the psu fan runs for few seconds and the it stops.i have tried it with and without cpu , with and without case fans , i have the same problem it turns the fans for few seconds and then it stops as if dose not have enough power.
tested the psu with the paper clip test and it works , but when i put the 24 pin connectors and the 8 pin connectors on the motherboard it dosen't. Maybe i do something wrong ?
I've  speak with tech support from cooler master and it seems it's not the psu
honestly i don't know what eles to try /do
    can you help me?
    thank you in advance

To go a step farther, when the board is outside of the case, you should have a monitor connected to the onboard graphics or a discrete card, 1 stick of RAM in the primary DIMM slot, and CPU with it's cooler for initial startup. Be sure to test on a non conductive surface of unprinted plain cardboard or an untreated wood surface.

  • Problems with my msi 845pe max2 bfir

right 2 problems first which is quiet annoying,
one of the reasons i bought the bfir model over the others was because of the bluetooth now i go to set it up install programs etc and shut down pc get bluetooth card go to put it in and..... um where does it conect to i look in the manual and it says use usb lead to connect it to blue usb bort on motherboard or somethink along thouse lines fine i think i will just get the lead and um ??? where is the lead read the supplied installation booklet and cable is optional !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! how the f*** can msi say that the board comes with bluetooth when u cant use it unless u have the cable that is just silly, where am i sposed to gget the cable from ???? please help.
    on to second problem
    overclocking
now my cpu is a p4 2.4b 533 and my ram is some OCZ PC 3500 512mb now i set the fsb to 166x18 and that gives me 2987mhz fine u say, and i set the memory to 333 but the memmory is seriously lagging its running at 165mhz but on a friends abit motherboard cant remember the model number with the same settings im running the memory fsb is well over 250fsb, ive been told this is cos my memory isnt running in async and on the abit board to sort this they have a feature called hardware strapping why doesnt the msi board run the same they are bothe the same chipsets, would the latest bios cure this ????
if so why didnt msi just do it that way in the first place ???????
    MaLicE
please help me answer my questions

yes i have the blue extra box but to actually connect the bluetooth card to the motherboard but if you were to look at yours the way u connect the blutooth card to the motherboard requires a cable which has the same connectors on as the extra usb ports you get i need a cable with 1 of them connectors on each end cos the bluetooth card plugs in to 1 of the spare usb slots on the motherboard.
as for overclocking i want the best out of my system i dont want to settle for standard the option msi have left out is a big option and i need to know why or if it is there where is it and if not is it in the new bios ???

Just bought a new MSI GeForce FX 590 TD-128.
I removed previous drivers and video card, installed the new video card and attached the power cable, and booted my machine.
When I boot the machine I get no picture....just a blinking cursor in the top left hand side of the screen.  I thought maybe it was a power supply issue (350W PSW), so I tried installing the video card in another machine with a 400W PSW.   I get the same darn blinking cursor    X(
Anyone have any ideas what causes this?  Do I have a defective card?

It mentions a Universal AGP Pro Slot and support for AGP 1X/2X/4X...but no mention of AGP 3.0.
    The ECS board is at:
    http://www.ecs.com.tw/products/pd_spec.asp?product_id=192
and only mentions AGP 4X support.
Does the FX 5900 only work on the newer motherboards maybe?

If it doesn't work on any board then it might be bad, but 350w and 400w don't mean much so it's also possible you have a power problem.
Both power supplies are made by Antec.  Seems unlikely that neither machine would even boot...but I've seen stranger things

  • Problems with install_flash_player_active_x.msi

    hello.
i'm trying to install Autocad Architecture edition, and at
one point i get an error message :
The feature you are trying ro use is on a network resource
    that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder
    containing the installation packager
    "install_flash_player_active_x.msi" in the box below
The problem is that this file is indeed in the folder the
    computer is looking for it.
I cant´understand what can i do to solve it.
I downloaded from adobe another flash player and successfully
installed it, but it doesn`t solve the problem.
    pleaaaaase i nieed some help
    thank you all.

Wow, that's strange. That Flash Player installer msi is a
licensed installer is -not- supposed to be distributed as part of
an installer (legally speaking....) That's no fault of yours
    though...
First, to solve your problem you're going to have to speak
with the folks at Autocad. It's not something Adobe is going to be
able to resolve for you becuase it's burned into whatever they're
    trying to install.
Second, if you can manage to make a contact at Autocad please
point them to this thread and ask them to comment on their
    licensing situation for the MSI...
