Problem with an external Firewire HD

Hi
Up until yesterday, my mini was booting from my external HD (in a firewire enclosure). Suddenly, it started acting sluggish. I rebooted the mini and it couldn't find the Firewire HD. I messed a little with different booting options and finally unplugged the Firewire HD and hooked it to my Windows box. It recognised it as a HD but couldn't read anything on it, probably because it was not FAT32 or NTSF formatted. I hooked it again to the mac and VOILA, there it was again and I could even boot from it.
Same problem today except that this time I could boot from it. I tried analysing it or repairing it using the disk utility ( both from the installation DVD or from the internal mini HD) but all I got was some sort of "Node structure error".
I then tried to erase the drive using the disk utility. No luck, once again and then, no more Firewire HD. Whatever I do, no matter what I have tried, it's as if the **** thing has completely disapeared.
I was using my mini internal HD as a back up drive and I have a fresh back up (3 days old) so it's not catastrophic but I sure would like to have my Firewire disk back, as it's much faster than my internal Seagate 4200 HD.
I would appreciate your comments on this, please

The problem is that you need to repair the "node structure error". If the included disk utility cannot repair it then you will need to use either Disk Warrior or Tech Tool Pro to do it. Until you get rid of that error you are going to have problems.
From what I have read Disk Warrior is the best solution to this problem.
There are some posts about it here:

  • Problem with 2 External Drives on my new iMac

I am having a problem when I daisy-chain a second external HD to my first external HD connected to my new iMac. This is the second external HD I've tried this with, with similar problems arising.
My setup: OS 10.5.6. First external HD: G-Tech Q 1TB; 2nd External HD: also a G-Tech Q 1TB (the first time I was daisy-chaining a LaCie 250GB drive to my first external drive).
Problem: when my second external HD is daisy-chained to the first external HD my system starts to go wonky. I can't force quit apps for one. My system hangs. On reboot I don't get past the blue screen. If I remove the daisy-chain all is fine.
I initially had this problem with another external HD I tried to daisy-chain to the first. Same issue.
I was trying to partition the second external using Disk Utility. When I hit the Partition button, Disk Utility just hung with the beach ball.
When I attached a second external the first time I tried to do this all sorts of havoc ensued. A lot of apps were hanging and I couldn't Force Quit them. The whole system seemed to go wonky.
Can anyone tell me what might be happening here?

I've been doing a bit of research on these boards about daisy-chaining problems and am reading that sometimes daisy-chaining can overwhelm the Firewire bus and even corrupt data. This is what I had experienced the first time I tried to daisy-chain. Someone recommended a powered Firewire repeater (like this: http://tinyurl.com/kl84n5) would be a better solution.
Given I've got only 1 Firewire port on my iMac, what do you think?

Java 6 you can't as Apple maintains it, and Java 7 you could if you uninstall it and Oracle provides the earlier version which they likely won't his last update fixed 37 remote exploits.
Java broken some software here and there, all you'll have to do is wait for a update from the other parties.

I have a problem with the external sound of my iPod, when I take the headphones the music keeps playing and the ipod recognizes still have a headset connected. how do I get external sound out?

    - Try insering and removing the headphone plug a dozen times or so.
    - Try cleaning out the headphone jack in the iPod.
    - Resett he iPod. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restoe to factory defaults/new iPod
If yu still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem, likely a bad headphone jack. Yu can make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store to confirm.
If not underwarranty Apple will only exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for:

A third-party place like the following is less expensive. Here is one. Google for more.

  • Urgent question very Strange problem with an external HD on mac PRO

    Hi,
I have a problem with a external HD on my mac pro.
After many month of regular use with out any problem today when I turned on the HD I could not see it in the finder anymore.
I use this HD for backup of an other external HD and to do the back up I use an application called SYN SYNC
    The strange things are:
    1) If I start Sync Sync everything works properly as if the sofware recognize with out problem that the HD is effectively there.
    2) If I open DISK UTILITY I can see the HD and if I try to repair it the utility after 2 minutes says that everything is ok.
    3) If I look for the mac pro (to which the external HD incriminated is connected) on a different mac in my studio over the net I can see the external HD and I can browse the folder, copy items from the esternal HD to the MAC and even copy thing on the external HD.
I tried to connect directly via Fire wire 800 the HD on a different MAC and I could not see it like on the mac pro.
Does enyone have an idea of what's going on?
    best regards
    Lorenzo

I can still see all the others external Hd with out any problem and I already try this but no results I can't see that HD on the desktop and neither in the sidebar.
As I said the strange thing is that the external HD shows the same behaviour when is connected to a different MAC.
Seams the problem is with the HD not with the MAC.
I even try to use a different case for the HD using also USB connection instead of FW, but nothing change!

  • IMac won't boot with SATA external firewire drive attached

I have an 1T Hitachi SATA drive enclosed in a Macally firewire enclosure. If it is attached either in series with other IDE firewire drives or directly, my iMac will boot only to the Apple icon and will not engage the gear icon. If I disconnect the drive the iMac will boot normally with all the other IDE firewire drives attached. I've troubleshot with both Macally and Hitachi, received a replacement enclosure and have an RMA from Hitachi. Before I send the Hitachi back with the possibility of a replacement not fixing the problem, I am asking whether there is a known problem with external SATA drives in particular. TIA. -Dave

I have the same problem exactly but with two firewire 800 drives attached. Both are LaCie d2 500 gb drives. I have tried each one as the first in the series with no luck. I have not tried to connect with any other type of cable.

  • Editing with an external FireWire drive

I've been using iMovie to edit short clips (5 to 15 minutes) for some time now, but I have a two + hour play I'd like to edit from material pulled from two DV camcorders. I'll be jumping up to Final Cut Express for this, but I'll no doubt need another drive to handle the file size. I've got a 2GHz Intel Core Duo iMac, which offers only FireWire 400. Will this be fast enough to handle the video if I'm editing it from the external FireWire drive?

LaCie does not support the use of their drives with Canon cameras (because of the FW protocol it uses) on a single FW bus, which is all Mac computers have. As you can't add a card into that machine, you'll most likely have to capture to the internal and transfer. This would not be a problem capturing from a different camera, any Sony and most Panasonic cameras.

  • Installing Tiger (dvd) with sony external firewire DVD drive

    Helo all,
Can anyone tell me if the B/W G3 can boot up an OS X CD from an external firewire or USB DVD Room.
I want to upgrade my machine to Tiger but not having any luck with getting it to recognize the external DVD Rom on boot up.
It recognizes it with no problem once the OS is installed and logged into a user profile but the entire time during boot up I can't get it to boot from the drive.
I have tried the following key combinations (Don't know if they are supposed to work with the B/W G3):
    T - Firewire Target Mode
Command-Option-Shift-Delete - Bypass internal harddrive on boot
System Prefs > Startup Disk > Select DVD Room > Restart
Is there anything else I can try other then trying to find an IDE internal hard drive to plug into this machine?

B&Ws can not boot from Firewire drives.
Most Pioneer drives are bootable if installed internally. Certain other brands are also bootable (internally).

  • Problem with NIC and Firewire on MSI 865PE NEO2-PFISR

Hi, I have lots of trouble getting the network adapter on the MSI 865PE NEO2-PFISR to work.
The NIC's LED indicators doesnt even light up when I plug in a network cable,
and in windows (win 2003 server) it doesnt find the adapter at all.
The NIC is displayed in the bios, and I have the option to disable it,
    but it is enabled.
I have even reinstalled windows 2003 server to try to get the NIC to work.
I have upgraded the bios to v3.8 via live update, with no problems, although the
firewire-option on the same page in the bios is still gone, it doesnt detect the
    firewire at all(!).
    I have also tried several other NIC's (a 3COM 3C905B TX and a 3C905B TX XL
PCI adapter). The 3C905B TX worked fine for a while, and then it started saying in
windows that a network cable was unplugged, and began to try 10mbit, 100mbit
lots of retries, now it doesnt work at all.
I swapped tp-cables and changed the ports on the network switch (which there is
also other computers attached to which doesnt have any problems) and that didnt
    made any difference.
It seems that the whole pci bus is long gone, and maybe the onboard NIC is
attached to this same pci bus?
Strange also about the firewire-controller which isnt detected anymore.
The USB devices work, and even a 3com usb wlan adapter works well.
I have tried to reset the bios several times without that making a difference.
Anybody have a clue to point out here?
    Cheers!

Then I was so pissed I hadnt touched the computer in a week, and just tried to use it a few days ago, and it seemed to work all ok. I used it for a few hours, and then it locked up.
When I powered it up again, the lights on the integrated adapter was out. At first it seemed to work to take the agp card a little out of its slot, as if it was unaligned or something. Used it for a few more hours.
Then I plugged in the sound cables (5.1 sound with 3 cables), and with the last cable, the network darkened out AGAIN!!
In the bios it still indicates that the network is enabled, firewire is enabled etc.
I twisted the network cable, and for a few microseconds I get a orange light, not the usual green light. Now this has stopped too.
I see other also have problems with these symptoms so I guess I've got another black monday card.
I will return this card too, and ask the reseller to get a card of another brand.

  • Problem with USB/External-HDD/etc... not writing?

    Hello...
Recently I've been having a problem with my USB, and external harddrive. It seems that for some reason when I copy files to the device, they do not write. If I go and view the device contents on another PC, my files aren't there, but on this PC they are.
The only way that they will copy is if I right click and select "Safely Remove Drive."
I never used to have to do this; Is there a way to make files auto write?
    Thanks in advance,
    Stephen

Hi, you need to use -sync mount option.

  • Problems with iomega External Hard Drive on MacBook Air

    Hi community!
I'm experiencing some problems with my MacBook Air and an external hard drive and I'm wondering if anybody would be able to help me out.
I own a MacBook Air running Mac OS X 10.7.3. When I connect my iomega 500GB external hard drive, the Finder is able to pick it up, but when I click on the drive name, it spins forever without the Finder responding for a long time (it basically crashes the Finder with a spinning ball staying forever). The light on the external hard drive flashes intermittently when I first plug it in, but after that stays constantly lit. So I guess the disk has power, but something else is wrong with it.
It was working fine earlier today but I accidentally pulled the cable out while the disk was working. I'm hoping this hasn't permanently damaged my drive.
Any help on what I could do to fix this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    SV

You might try launching Disk Utility, and then select the drive in question to run a "Verify disk" on the drive. This may indicate any errors in the file system of the drive that might be preventing the successful reading of the disk.
If the disk is empty, you may want to re-partition and reformat, so as to start with a "clean slate".

An other ideea is that this is caused by faulty bios, but it is just a guess

Any ideas on what may cause this?
    Any help would be appreaciated.

display goes to sleep when colsed because there is a magnetic switch - small magnet opens the circuit.
if it stays on, either magnet was misplaced, some wire disconnected or the issue is with the switch circuit.
on some models switch is part of trackpad, if you have small magnet, try moving it over trackpad, see what it does.

  • Problem with Viewsonic external screen

Hi everyone, I have the new MBP and miniDP > DVI cable, but nothing shows up on my external Viewsonic vx2035. The same combination works with other monitor, also the Viewsonic works with my old MBP... Any idea? Thanks.
    John

I'm having a similar problem with my Cintiq. I've been dealing with both Apple and Wacom to address the issue and it looks like a compatability problem.
The reason I'm writing on this thread is that, as I was talking to the Wacom guy, I mentioned the Viewsonic issue I'd read about here. After a bit of silence, he told me that both Wacom and Viewsonic buy their lcd's from the same manufacturer. This would suggest an incompatibility issue that relates specifically to the brand of lcd.
Anyway, I hope this get's sorted out soon, as I would love to be able to repurchase the MBP I just returned due to this issue.

  • Problem with Logic/external HardDisk - NEED HELP!

    Hi Everybody
I've got a big problem with my Logic Projects. I am recording Songs with my band and it's all 24bit, 96 KHz. With more than about 20 Tracks playing simultaneously, Logic shows an error that the disk is too slow.
For all the Audio stuff, I am using an external LaCie HardDisk, 250GB, FW800. Buffers are on the highest setting in Logic, and the "Larger Disk Buffer" Option is turned on.
In the Terminal, I watched the Disk usage by typing "top -d", and with 20 Tracks playing, it shows a Disk read of about 6000KB/s. This is well within the FW800 Standard! When I copy a file from that HardDisk to another one, Terminal shows a disk read of about 25'000KB/s, so nothing seems to be wrong with the disk itself. I guess it must be a Logic problem.
Can anybody help me or does anyone have the same problem? Any help is greatly appreciated... Thanks!
(I am using Logic Pro 7.1.1)

    Hello,
This is something I have experience with. If you want to you can go here to see my full set-up.
    www.KenosisStudios.com
    I am in a pro scenerio where I often need and use 50-60 tracks simult. at 24/96khz. I used to use a Glyph rack with 7200rpm drives and when I started out I spent unreal time on the phone with Emagic, Apple, Sweetwater, and Glyph tech support to try every option of getting ProTools HD results out of my track count. I am no tech guru, so don't live by my words alone, but my personal experience states the following;
I tried raiding the drives, splitting tracks to seperate drives for playback, you name it. The bottom line is this, your problem is not, as you know, with the bandwidth of your bus. It is the speed of your drives. Were you to have 10krpm or 15krpm drives you would immediately see a difference. Yes bandwidth and all sorts of techy stuff comes into play, but by and large this is what you need to address.
What I ended up doing was this- I started using the outboard drive for back-ups and other outboard drives for my sample libraries. I installed in the G5 second drive slot a 7200rpm Seagate Sata drive and strictly track just to it.
Doing this alone got my track count to the 50-60track, 24/96khz scenerio I use today.
My advise, depending on how big you need the drive to be, do the research on what 10krpm and 15krpm internal Sata drives are dependable and go with that. Of course the faster the rpm the smaller the drive, so just look at a good balance for your situation. If you must go external, again, the faster the better, and going Sata will do you better than FW, etc.
I hope this is of use to you.
