Problem with Classic

I'm running OS 10.4.11 on a G4 iBook.
Have also loaded OS 9.2 and the two updaters 9.2.1 and 9.2.2. I see each of these on my desktop. The
OS 9.2 folder appears complete.
PROBLEMS INCLUDE:
When I go to an app that requires Classic, Classic begins to load, the progress bar shows just a bit of blue, and then it appears to hang. In this case I'm using OS 9.2.
When I try to upgrade to OS 9.2.1 Classic always starts, despite how I set the Classic preferences, and the updater app does not function.
Ditto behavior for updated 9.2.2, but I know I must first successfully update to 9.2.1.
The big problem is getting Classic to work correctly. What am I missing?
Thanks
Robert

So, that is the OS 9 System folder on the desktop?
If so, it should be in the hard disk drive; and the
companion Applications 9 folder, there also.
Does the computer you have support Dual Booting?
If the computer is an older iBook, some of them did.
OS 9 Drivers... need to be installed prior to any OS.
The iBooks which shipped with an OS9.2.2 system
may be unable to use the OS9.2.1 or older software
in an install or update mode in the computer. They
shipped with a newer OS 9.2.2 that was not retail.
Unless yours is a second version first model White G3
and then, it may have shipped with an OS 9.1 restore
disc on CD, along with an older OS X 10.0. These
would be upgraded while running from OS 9.1. If you
only have an OS 9.1 version, the upgrade downloads
may not work. (Somewhere, on disc, I have a tech disc
that will upgrade OS8.6 to 9.2.2; a rarity.)
The RAM amount you say yours has, indicates to me
and the data I've read about iBooks, that it is a G3
model, and there were several in a row using 640MB
RAM as a max, and they could dual-boot with their
original OS9.1 system and the supplied OS X. From
the booted 9.1, you can upgrade to 9.2.1 & 9.2.2.
This may involve a retail OS 9.2.1 install disc; if the
updaters don't work, or if you need a boot CD 9.2.
Did you get your OS 9.2.1 update from a reputable site
such as Apple support, or another OK one, such as:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6214 ?
You will have to use an 'Identify by serial number' site
(such as I have posted) to tell more about the computer
so other databases can be used to know more about it.
And more about the software set included with it. The
OS9 version, if it can be used to boot the computer,
would require the hard disk drive to have OS9 Drivers.
Those would be installed on a bare, reformatted drive
before OS 9 or OS X were installed. With OS9 boot
restored (if that model supports it) then the OS9 can
be used to upgrade itself.
An external drive, set up as a boot volume, could be
used to update an OS 9 system. However, if the iBook
is a dual-boot computer, without OS9 Drives in it, the
computer won't boot OS9, & can only see it as classic.
That may slow your update to 9.2.2 if not prevent it.
(There is a way to update Classic, but not sure how.
My dual-boot and classic-only Macs have used just
OS 9.2.2.)

database, read it in another computer: http://mactracker.ca

What kind of problem could it be? Hardware or software? Maybe is solution for this? Maybe downgarde iPod software could help? How to do it?

A known problem, with no fix it seems.

  • Problems with classic downloads from OS X machine on OS Classic

I recently acquired a G3 Powerbook in addition to my imacs. The G3 is running mac os 8.6 (using to run old programs I had from my early mac days). My problem is this:
I downloaded some classic apps on my iMac (which is running OS 10.6.1). I put them on a usb flash drive and when I transfer them to the powerbook, it does not recognize them as applications. It actually wants to see them as the generic "document" and has the symbol for PC Exchange on it.
Is there something that OSX does not copy (resource wise) and is there a way to fix this?
    Thanks

    Hi, Christopher -
Is there something that OSX does not copy (resource wise) and is there a way to fix this?
In some ways OSX can behave like a PC. OS 9 and earlier Mac OS's use embedded File Type and Creator codes to let Finder know what app to open a file with, and to let the app know what kind of file it is. In the case of an app itself, its Type code lets Finder know that it is an app and not a document.
OSX does not use these codes, and, if a file is decompressed on an OSX-running machine after downloading it, those codes can be lost.
A similar thing will happen if the intermediate media, a flash drive in this case, has been formatted as a PC volume rather than a Mac OS Extended or Mac OS Standard volume.
The solution is to not decompress the file after downloading it. Instead, copy the still-compressed archive, which usually has a filename ending in .sit or perhaps .sit.hqx, to the older Mac. Better is to do that after refomatting the intermediate media to a Mac format. Do not attempt to open the file while it is still on the transfer volume - wait until it has been copied to the older machine's hard drive.
Once that is done, the .sit or .sit.hqx file should open when double-clicked on the old machine. Sometimes it won't open that way - Stuffit changed its codes; archives created in v. 4 or v. 3 may not respond when double-clicked if Stuffit Expander v. 5.x or later is in use. The solution for that is to drop the archive onto the icon for Stuffit Expander. The archive should then open, and the file(s) inside it then can be extracted.

  • PO creation problem with classic scenario

    Hi All,
We are in SRM 7.0 nad have mapped extended classic scenario. Now we want to map the Classic scenario only for a specific company code. So, my question is can we map the classic scenario on company code specific.
I tried maintianing the document type & number ranges in R/3. Maintained the number ranges & transaction type in SRM.
    Also implemented BADI BBP_EXTLOCALPO_BADI.
But after creating the SC the status is "Approved" but no PO getting created in ECC. On observing RZ20 there is an system error for the number ranges.
Please let me know if I am missing some steps.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Abey.

    HI,
Make sure the PO number range in ERP is same in SRM. Also have the external checkbox checked for PO number range in ERP.
Also have the same transaction type in SRM and ERP. Where the ERP transaction type should have external number range as the above mentioned profile.
    Regards

  • Adobe photoshop with classic

I recently reinstalled mac os 10.2.8. I have adobephotoshop, but it runs on classic. I can open the application using classic but it doesnt let me print. The option is not even available for me. My printer is canon S900 and the driver is available for both Mac X and 9 on their website. I downloaded both. Has anybody had a similar problem? Ever since I've reinstalled mac os I've been having problems with classic.

MM2: I'm having trouble understanding your last post. You must have OS 9 installed on your Mac, since you can run Classic. Is your Mac not bootable into OS 9 from the OS 9 System Folder that's installed on it? When you choose Startup Disk from your System Preferences window, is the OS 9 System Folder not presented as a startup option? In that case you may have to fall back on Canon tech support.
If you can select OS 9 in Startup Disk, do so, and reboot into OS 9. Then locate the Canon software installer on your hard drive and run it, being sure to follow any instructions that are supplied with it (it may be important to have the printer connected, turned on, etc. — I don't have a Canon printer and don't know). Restart, still in OS 9, to activate the Canon driver, and then open Photoshop and try printing something. If you can print from Photoshop while the Mac is booted into OS 9, you should also be able to do so when it's booted into OS X.

  • Multiple problems with 80GB classic, don't know where to start.

    Hey guys,
I got an Apple classic 80GB for my bday early August and lately i've been having so many problems i dont know where to start, i'll try to explain them as best as i can.
*problem 1:* Whenever i plug my iPod into my PC, it locks up the system for about 5 minutes, then comes up with an error box saying that 'There is a problem with your iPod yadda yadda restore etc'.
I proceed to restore the iPod, then once its restored and reconnects itself, it repeats the cycle by freezing then telling me to restore. The only way i can do a restore and have it not give me an error is if i reboot when it is disconnected.
*Problem 2:* When i finally get it up and ready to sync, i go to sync all my files (About 2000 songs). It gets to around the 1500 song mark then says there is an error and the iPod disconnects itself.
It then instantaneously reconnects itself and starts syncing from where it left off.
Once it has then sync'd all of the music ad tells me its ready to be ejected. I eject the iPod and disconnected it.
I then go into the iPod and it has no songs/videos/photos, yet it has still used up about 15gb. If i reconnect it, it will just sit there for 5 minutes not syncing, it will then randomly say the sync is done and it will eject itself.
FINALLY after all that i have my music on there
*Problem 3* Once the songs are on the iPod, it becomes insanely laggy. If i navigate to a song and press play, it will take about 10 seconds for the actual song to play. The delay is just as bad for next song, pause etc. Even using it in my cars head unit causes it to lag.
*Problem 4* If i do get a song playing after all that, about 1/5 songs will just randomly skip to the next song without letting it play through.
I have all the latest iTunes/Firmware/Drivers for everything on my PC and iPod.
I have sent it back to Apple for repair yet they could not find anything wrong (Yeah right :|)
If anyone out there could help me please, im at my wits end with this infernal machine.
    Thankyou

*Outdated operating system:* Cant be, im running XP SP3 with the latest updates
*Computer needs updates:* I've got the latest drivers for all of my hardware, including BIOS
*Software interference:* THe only other program i have running in the background is Kaspersky Antivirus, but that is disabled when i try to sync
*Damaged Files* Possibly, i played through the album where it froze at and even reo-imported it, it seemed to play and import fine
*Unregistered .dll files (Windows):* Tried this fix, but it did the same problems as the original post. Such as freezing on a certain song, then reconnecting itself only to put the music on there, yet it is really laggy
*Damaged disk structure:* Tried this fix, didn't help
*Corrupt iPod photo Cache* I have never tried to put photos on it, so i dont see how this could be it.
*Lost connection:* Checked it, it's very firm and unlikely to come loose.
*Conflict with third-party hardware:* I dont have any connected, nor have i ever
*Bad hardware:* I tried it on all of my 8 USB drives. I dont use any hubs or firewire cards so this couldn't be it.
Also i forgot to add that 1/5 times i go to restore, it locks the computer up and windows gives me a 'delayed write failed' bubble

  • Serious problem with my iPod Classic/iTunes

I have a 6th Generation iPod classic (80 GB), and recently, I have been having some serious problems with it.
When I connect it to iTunes, there is usually no problem, it shows up, plays and displays the music correctly, etc. However, if I try to ADD any music to it, iTunes will freeze, then close, and within 5 minutes, my entire computer will freeze completely, and be shut off. For whatever reason, happen when my iPod finally disconnects because my computer turned off, all of my music is missing from the library (This doesn't happen every time it freezes, because I try to disconnect my iPod manually before everything freezes). The music is still on the iPod, (it says that I have XX.X GB of "other" instead of music/videos), but it doesn't show up. When I plug in my iPod, iTunes says that there was a problem and I need to restore it. The first time this happened, I lost over 5,800 songs, but I forgave Apple, because these things do occasionally happen, plus I had no idea what exactly went on. The SECOND time happened within the same week, after I had put 800 songs back on the restored iPod. The first time happened when I was using iTunes 10 (which is seriously buggy on my computer, and freezes often), so I switched to iTunes 9 (still buggy, but doesn't freeze quite as much), and the same thing happened. So now I'm thinking it's my iPod's fault. My iPod does a whole host of minor problems over time such as making certain songs cut off at a certain specific point for no reason (Always the same song, always the same cut off point, and I can't fast forward past it, I also can't delete the songs because if I highlight them on iTunes, iTunes will freeze, and if I find them under the music folder in iPod control, my computer will freeze), freezing the entire iPod for seemingly no reason, and somehow messing up my album artwork (it will appear as "Colourful Static"), along with alot more.
I know this is a troublesome problem, but if anyone could somehow shine some light on this problem, it would be tremendously appreciated.
    Thank you
    -Eric Luna

Unfortunately, when a hard drive starts clicking that means it's going bad. The mechanism is having trouble reading the drive. Since the iPod is mostly just a harddrive and a battery I have a feeling that this is your problem.
    watch this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMm6c3fr-fU
about 25ss in is where the clicking starts. If it sounds like that, but softer and more muffled since it is a smaller drive that is being enclosed then I think you might be SOL. Maybe if you're iPod is still under warranty you can get a credit and go for a touch and avoid moving parts all together?

    Self explanatory.
You could try creating an iPod version of the films.
Use CTRL and B to display the Menu bar shown above. Alternatively, use the ALT key, followed by the F key, the W key and finally the I (eye) key - that's (menu)/File/Create New Version/Create iPod or iPhone version.

  • Alpine CDE-103Bt Head Unit and Problem with 160 Gig Ipod Classic

    Hi,
2 weeks agao I brought a new Alpine CDE-103BT Head unit for my car. I have owned one of the old 160 gig classics for the last year and a half and at the time I brough the unit I was told this should all work sweet. Indeed all of the documentation from Alpine, and the Sales person, said this would not be a problem.
Unfortunately from Day one, most times after I received a phone call, while playing my ipod, the Head Unit would givesme an "Error-03" message and stop playing my music. I would then have to unplug my ipod, reset it, and plug it back in. Extremely frustrating.
The people I brought the Head Unit from are trying to say its an Ipod problem, yet I never had any problems with it and after I contacted the Australian Ipod help line they said it all appears to be working correctly. The firmware version I was on when I first tried the ipod on the head unit was 1.1.2. The Alpine manual said it should be 1.1.1 (then again you would expect them to be able to cope with updates) so as a last ditch attempt I downgraded the firmware on my ipod to 1.1.1, but it did not make a difference.
The only other thing I have noticed is that I switch the repeat and shuffle settings off when I plug in the unit, but after I unplug it after an Error-03 the Repaet function has been swtiched to all - I am not sure if this is what is causing the problem.
I am getting pretty frustrated with everything and I was wondering if anyone else has come accross this issue and even me helpful had they found a way to fix it.
If not has anyone had any postive expereinces with Alpine head units?
    Thanks

  • Chooser problem with HP PSC 1410 and HP Deskjet 5940 on Classic

Excuse me for my bad english, I am french... !!!
I have just bought macmini with HP DeskJet 5940 promotion. I installed internet last driver for it. Printing is OK with Mac OS 10.4.4 but doesn't work with Classic. Printer is connected by USB port. I tried with another HP printer : HP PSC 1410. It doesn't work too under Classic.
When I try to print under Classic from SimpleText, I obtain the message : "SimpleText ne peut imprimer un autre document pour le moment. Utilisez le sélecteur pour choisir une imprimante". I translate in english : "SimpleText can't print another document for this time. Use chooser to select a printer."
I open chooser and click on LaserWriter8 as indicated in documentation. I obtain a new message : "LaserWriter8 requiert AppleTalk. Assurez-vous que vous êtes bien connecté au réseau AppleTalk." I translate in english : "LaserWriter8 asks AppleTalk. Be sure that you are connected to AppleTalk net.". I click on OK and two new message appears : "Impossible d'ouvrir AppleTalk". I translate in englisk : "Can't open AppleTalk" and "Pour activer AppleTalk, ouvrez les préférences Réseau et cliquez sur AppleTalk". I translate : "To activate AppleTalk, open net preferences and click on AppleTalk". Evidently, that is already made !
But it is absolutely necessary that I can use deskjet printers under Classic with my macmini which runs on Mac OS 10.4.4 !
I turn around the problem and I don't find solution. Have you some ideas ?
Thank you for your help !

Pardon: je parlais Francais comme une vache espagnol et unless HP specifically says so, there is no guarantee that any modern printer will work in Classic - partly because printer manufacturers don't bother with aging software, and partly because some printer manufacturers seem not to understand that Classic over OS X deals with printers very differently from the way pure, bottable OS 9 does.
If you have a freshly installed OS X with a freshly installed Classic 9 and the right versions of HP's drivers and utilities, it should work - but if any of those is not freshly installed, there might be third-party components interfering.
If all-fresh software doesn't work, launch Apple's own Desktop Printer Utility and tell it to create a virtual Desktop Printer with Translator Postscript.
Even though it doesn't actually appear on the Desktop, that will become the default printer for Classic, accessible thorugh Chooer's LaserWriter driver.
Try again to print from SimpleText but set the dialog to Print to File, which should create a .ps file that can be dragged onto any X print queue, where it should just print! (To find an X print queue, Print from any X application and tell the Dock to Keep the icon)
That method is not guaranteed, but it does work for most people with most printers.

  • [PLEASE HELP!] Problems with iPod Classic 160GB.

Okay, I was about to sync my iPod Classic 160GB and go to bed. I plugged it in and everything was good. I am not sure if it was syncing yet, but it fell off the cord because my HP laptop moved. I wasn't worried at the time, The apple screen came up so I pressed Middle Button+Menu to reset it, then I plugged it back in. When I plugged it back in it said I had to format the drive in G.. The screen of the iPod said Connected Eject before disconnecting and had the circle arrows like when it is loading. It seems to be working fine when I unplug it.
But anyways, When I unplugged it a second time (I did click Disconnect in the toolbar on the actual device, not in iTunes) it didn't work again, and it brought up the grey apple screen again, then went to the language. so I plugged it back in. Then I said OK to the reformat. I clicked Default settings to the format and left the Volume Label blank because I don't know what that is...
It said WARNING: Formatting your iPod will delete all files on it, or something along the lines of that. so, I said okay, I'll just resync it, just get on the reformat. When I clicked format it said that it couldn't format my iPod... So, once again, I disconnected it, ejecting from the actual device in the toolbar, and it was absolutely cleared asking me for the Language. It keeps doing this every time I plug it in, and even when I switch USB slots. it wont read into my iTunes either.
I am really sad, and please answer because my iPod is basically my life, this is my worst nightmare come true.
    PLEASE ANSWER QUICK, Thanks...

here is an interesting thing: take the iphone and set lock screen to never. Now make an email with siri--be sure to activate her with call button. get to the body and get some text in there. then just stop talking. LOCK SCREEN APPEARS!!!!!! and of course you draft is gone.
There does seem to be a work around for some--maybe all these issues. Don't use the call button--use the buttons on the phone.
Siri seems to behave properly with scenerio above---sans call button. She does not go to lock.
