Problem with Computer, is it OS related?

I just turned on my mac today (spec below) and it was working fine, when i got the spinning beach ball, and nothing was responding, i had a few things running, i had aperture, firefox, and mail running.
i had to hold downt he button on the front to turn off and on again, as i couldnt even force relaunch finder...
it re-started, i put it down to a one off an continued what i was doing, but it happened again, so i did the same thing, this time during start up i got a folder icon with a question mark (does this mean it cant find the startup disk??) i has a mild panic attack, and tried just off/on again which luckily seemed to start the computer again. this time once started i tried a few simple tasks without starting all the same programs, i used firefox, and mail, but no aperture, the crash happened again, so this time i unplugged all things not necessary (mainly external HDs) and got my start up disk and booted from it and did a repair permissions and repair disk, i couldnt see anything obvious which was fixed, but i have started up fine and i am posting on here using firefox without any problems as of yet... (fingers crossed)
Now i suppose what im asking is, any ideas on the problem? or what elese i should do to remedy it?
i have another internal HD, should i do repair to this also? what about the other external HDs?
I know the mac and the OS is a little dated now, but i am stuck with it for the meantime so i would like to bear with it but if the diagnosis is that the computer or HD is on its last legs it would be good to know in advance, its difficult to ensure everything is alays backed up safely, and this version of OSX doesnt have time machine.

i think the 10.5 disk doesnt work because it came with another mac pro of a completely different spec.
Correct, gray discs are machine specific.
is there any way i can download 10.6 or 10.7 and install it on the new hard drive without having to order the disk?
Nope, you mist orer the 10.6 disc, then update to 10.6.8 to get App Store..

    Boy, you are not kidding,  I was running both the cloud and CS6, and I was ready to throw in the towel.
    I have changed computer's twice now, have a solid state hd, (which I love) with 10 terabytes on externals, I run NOTHING except adobe's stuff on my HD now, and only one version of it, and it runs like a dream.
    So, I updated the OS to win 8.1, updated my peripherals,
    I dumped CS6 (hated to, but for some reason my 3D won't work on it, it works fine with the cloud) but in CS6 the software was turning it off after adobe's last update.
    I've made a virtual machine for my development environments which do not play well with adobe's stuff.
    My rule of thumb has always been double what the manufacturer states is required for RAM, but imho, with my current upgrades: upgraded to win8.1, and other peripherals, spent two weeks changing stuff over and it's about 100 times better than trying to run CC and CS6.   - No kidding, the change is astronomical
    But for anything PC I'm way over powered, and for Adobe, I'm still underpowered.
    Next, I'll just get a mac for Adobe, and stick with my pc's for ms/CentOS.   Too, it seems like since the cloud was initiated Adobe is rolling out the updates faster and changes without warning. The processor/3D issue,  I had no warning on it, just woke up one day and "no more 3d" :S
    But I do love the cloud, so, guess there's got to be some dark lining to it. <g>

  • IPhone has constant problems with Computer-To-Computer network

    I use a Computer-To-Computer network to connect my iPhone with my MacBook Pro when I'm at the office. This enables syncing of Things and OmniFocus between my iPhone versions of these programs and the versions on my MacBook Pro. I have one of the original (2G) iPhones. I daily go to my Airport icon on my Mac's menu bar, click on Create Network, and set up a password. I'm using 40-bit WEP.
    This sort of syncing procedure worked fairly well until iPhone OS 3.0. Ever since then, it's been completely unreliable. I've tried changing the channel a number of times, and of course rebooting both the iPhone and the computer dozens of times. It's still a problem.
    Anyone heard of this networking problem with 3.0? Any info appreciated! Thanks.

    I have one problem with one to one relation ship. While i am trying to persist the objects it is showing that "parent key not found" exception. Is there any problem with my class configuration ?..

    Hello,
    I'm not sure what the FK_ECOMM_SCH_DET constraint refers to, but I assume it is to the only OneToOne reference defined. Based on the mappings shown, you have told TopLink that ECommSchema has a 1:1 to ECommSchemaDet, so that ECommSchemaDet has to be inserted first. My guess is your constraint is the oposite, requiring that ECommSchema be inserted before ECommSchemaDet. If so, just change the by directional 1:1 so that ECommSchema->ECommSchemaDet is mapped by the ECommSchemaDet->ECommSchema relationship (ie switch things).

  • 10.4.7: Problems with computer to computer network

    Since updating both my computers (G4 Powerbook and G5 desktop)to OS 10.4.7 the computer to computer network doesn´t work anymore. When accessing network connections the computers just don´t show up which they have done before the update.
    No problems with the Internet connection though, everything works well.
    I have seen some threads where network problems have been described but I didn´t find a workaround. Is there any solution to the computer to computer network problem?

    I have the exact same problem.
    When my PowerMac used to have 10.4.6 it was no problem to connect via Finder's Command-K from my MacBook Pro running 10.4.7.
    But now, after I updated my PowerMac to 10.4.7 this doesn't work anymore.
    As Wolfgang said, Internet works fine from every computer in my local network. The Mac mini (Intel) runs 10.4.7, too, and I can connect from the MacBook Pro to the Mac mini (and vice versa) without any problem.
    But connecting from & to the PowerMac (Dual G5 2.7) with 10.4.7 doesn' work.
    I did the update via the online Software Update procedure. It sometimes seems to be better to not use this but download the full installer and use this for the update.
    I'll try that soon and tell you how it comes out.

  • M515 Hotsync problem with computer Windows XP Professional

    I am not a computer person.  Since my friend connected our WD My Book Essential external hard drive to our computer my husband's M515 does not hotsync .  Message he gets is "The connection between your handheld computer and the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again." We have checked everything in the Palm Desktop Hotsync and the handheld Palm and everything looks the same.  I have downloaded the Palm Desktop 4.1.4 sotfware, tried the soft reset several times and nothing works. When I Hotsync it restarts the computer and always comes up with the above message. This problem happened a few years ago when PalmOne was operating and the Support Team fixed the problem. Can someone help my husband before he kills me and the external WD My Book Essential.....

    I was not able to Hot Sync my old Tungsten T (m550) with Palm Desktop 4.1.4 and HotSync Manager (Windows).
    I am using Windows 7, 32bit OS. I unistalled Palm Desktop 4.1.4 and HotSync Manager (Windows),
    then downloaded Palm Desktop 6.2 and HotSync Manager (Windows) and everything works just fine now.

  • Problem with computation of depreciation

    Hi SDN forumers,
    We have a concern regarding the computation of the depreciation to be posted next month. Here is the scenario.
    We capitalized an asset last October 2008 with depreciation start date 10/01/2008. We processed the depreciation run for the month of October 2008 and at this point, the depreciation posted was correct based on October's Net Book Value. Come November 2008, we made some asset adjustments via F-90 (asset acquisition) which would increase the asset's net book value and at the same time adjust the depreciation per month.
    I noticed though that the depreciation to be posted for November 2008 includes that of the unposted depreciation from October 2008 (due to the increase in Net Book Value in November). This means that the depreciation to be posted for November 2008 is significantly higher than that of December 2008. What I was expecting was that (NBV + Additions / remaining life = depreciation) and that the amount to be posted would be equal every month after the acquisition.
    Is there a way we can adjust how the system computes depreciation? Thanks and best regards to each and everyone of you.

    Thanks for your continous help. I checked our existing depreciation key being used and at the same time checked "Depreciation Methods" in the SAP Help Portal. The SAP Help Portal suggested the following:
    Straight-Line from the Book Value over Remaining Useful Life

    The book value of the fixed asset is distributed in uniform amounts over the remaining life. However, unlike straight-line depreciation over the total useful life, this method ensures that post-capitalization and subsequent acquisitions do not lead to an extension of expected useful life. Post-capitalization or subsequent acquisitions after the expiration of the specified expected useful life do, however, cause problems in this depreciation method. In such cases, the changeover key in the depreciation key used has to provide for another method after the expiration of the expected useful life.
    +Calculation :+
    Depreciation = net book value / remaining life
    APC: 1000
    Useful life: 10
    Net book value: 500
    Remaining useful life: 5
    Depreciation = 500 / 5 = 100
    You can represent this depreciation method in the system, for example, with a depreciation key that calculates a depreciation percentage rate from the remaining life, due to the depreciation calculation method Percentage from the useful life being set in its base method, and the Rem. life indicator being set in the multi-level method. Furthermore, the base value indicator "24" in the multi-level method ensures that the net book value is the basis for depreciation. The net book value and the remaining life are related proportionally, which results in straight-line depreciation. In the event of acquisitions after the expiration of the expected useful life, the depreciation key switches to a new phase after the planned end of useful life. The new phase is set up for straight-line/remaining life/pro rata/to zero/to end of life. As a result, these subsequent acquisitions are also depreciated completely.
    I checked our depreciation keys and the settings are the ff:

  • Performance problems with XMLTABLE and XMLQUERY involving relational data

    Hello-
    Is anyone out there using XMLTABLE or XMLQUERY with more than a toy set of data? I am running into serious performance problems tyring to do basic things such as:
    * Combine records in 10 relational tables into a single table of XMLTYPE records using XMLTABLE. This hangs indefinitely for any more than 800 records. Oracle has confirmed that this is a problem and is working on a fix.
    * Combine a single XMLTYPE record with several relational code tables into a single XMLTYPE record using XMLQUERY and ora:view() to insert code descriptions after each code. Performance is 10 seconds for 10 records (terrible) passing a batch of records , or 160 seconds for one record (unacceptable!). How can it take 10 times longer to process 1/10th the number of records? Ironically, the query plan says it will do a full table scan of records for the batch, but an index access for the one record passed to the XMLQUERY.
    I am rapidly losing faith in XML DB, and desparately need some hints on how to work around these performance problems, or at least some assurance that others have been able to get this thing to perform.

    First, thanks for the responses above. I'm impressed with the quality of thought put into them. (Do the forum rules allow me to offer rewards? :) One suggestion in particular made a big performance improvement, and I’m encouraged to hear of good performance in pure XML situations. Unfortunately, I think there is a real performance challenge in two use cases that are pertinent to the XML+relational subject of this post and probably increasingly common as XML DB usage increases:
    •     Converting legacy tabular data into XML records; and
    •     Performing code table lookups for coded values in XML records.
    There are three things I want to accomplish with this post:
    •     Clarify what we are trying to accomplish, which might expose completely different approaches than I have tried
    •     Let you know what I tried so far and the rationale for my approach to help expose flaws in my thinking and share what I have learned
    •     Highlight remaining performance issues in hopes that we can solve them
    What we are trying to accomplish:
    •     Receive a monthly feed of 10,000 XML records (batched together in text files), each containing information about an employee, including elements that repeat for every year of service. We may need to process an annual feed of 1,000,000 XML records in the future.
    •     Receive a one-time feed of 500,000 employee records stored in about 10 relational tables, with a maximum join depth of 2 or 3. This is inherently a relational-to-XML process. One record/second is minimally acceptable, but 10 records/sec would be better.
    •     Consolidate a few records (from different providers) for each employee into a single record. Given the data volume, we need to achieve a minimum rate of 10 records per second. This may be an XML-only process, or XML+relational if code lookups are done during consolidation.
    •     Allow the records to be viewed and edited, with codes resolved into user-friendly descriptions. Since a user is sitting there, code lookups done when a record is viewed (vs. during consolidation) should not take more than 3 seconds total. We have about 20 code tables averaging a few hundred rows each, though one has 450,000 rows.
    As requested earlier, I have included code at the end of this post for example tables and queries that accurately (but simply) replicate our real system.
    Why we did and why:
    •     Stored the source XML records as CLOBS: We did this to preserve the records exactly as they were certified and sent from providers. In addition, we always access the entire XML record as a whole (e.g., when viewing a record or consolidating employee records), so this storage model seemed like a good fit. We can copy them into another format if necessary.
    •     Stored the consolidated XML employee records as “binary XML”. We did this because we almost always access a single, entire record as a whole (for view/edit), but might want to create some summary statistics at some point. Binary XML seemed the best fit.
    •     Used ora:view() for both tabular source records and lookup tables. We are not aware of any alternatives at this time. If it made sense, most code tables could be pre-converted into XML documents, but this seemed risky from a performance standpoint because the lookups use both code and date range constraints (the meaning of codes changes over time).
    •     Stored records as XMLTYPE columns in a table with other key columns on the table, plus an XMLTYPE metadata column. We thought this would facilitate pulling a single record (or a few records for a given employee) quickly. We knew this might be unnecessary given XML indexes and virtual columns, but were not experienced with those and wanted the comfort of traditional keys. We did not used XMLTYPE tables or the XML Repository for documents.
    •     Used XMLTABLE to consolidate XML records by looping over each distinct employee ID in the source batch. We also tried XMLQUERY and it seems to perform about the same. We can achieve 10 to 20 records/second if we do not do any code lookups during consolidation, just meeting our performance requirement, but still much slower than expected.
    •     Used PL/SQL with XMLFOREST to convert tabular source records to XML by looping over distinct employee IDs. We tried this outside PL/SQL both with XMLFOREST and XMLTABLE+ora:view(), but it hangs in both cases for more than 800 records (a known/open issue). We were able to get it to work by using an explicit cursor to loop over distinct employee IDs (rather than processing all records at once within the query). The performance is one record/second, which is minimally acceptable and interferes with other database activity.
    •     Used XMLQUERY plus ora:view() plus XPATH constraints to perform code lookups. When passing a single employee record, the response time ranges from 1 sec to 160 sec depending on the length of the record (i.e., number of years of service). We achieved a 5-fold speedup using an XMLINDEX (thank you Marco!!). The result may be minimally acceptable, but I’m baffled why the index would be needed when processing a single XML record. Other things we tried: joining code tables in the FOR...WHERE clauses, joining code tables using LET with XPATH constraints and LET with WHERE clause constraints, and looking up codes individually via JDBC from the application code at presentation time. All those approaches were slower. Note: the difference I mentioned above in equality/inequality constraint performance was due to data record variations not query plan variations.
    What issues remain?
    We have a minimally acceptable solution from a performance standpoint with one very awkward PL/SQL workaround. The performance of a mixed XML+relational data query is still marginal IMHO, until we properly utilize available optimizations, fix known problems, and perhaps get some new query optimizations. On the last point, I think the query plan for tabular lookups of codes in XML records is falling short right now. I’m reminded of data warehousing in the days before hash joins and star join optimization. I would be happy to be wrong, and just as happy for viable workarounds if I am right!
    Here are the details on our code lookup challenge. Additional suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I’ll try to post more detail on the legacy table conversion challenge later.

    The plan shows the nested loop access that slows things down.
    By contrast, a functionally-similar SQL query on relational data will use a hash join and perform 10x to 100x faster, even for a single record. There seems to be no way for the optimizer to see the regularity in the XML structure and perform a corresponding optimization in joining the code tables. Not sure if registering a schema would help. Using structured storage probably would. But should that be necessary given we’re working with a single record?

    With an xmlindex, the same query above runs in about 1 second, so is about 5x faster (0.2 sec/lookup), which is almost good enough. Is this the answer? Or is there a better way? I’m not sure why the optimizer wants to scan the code tables and index into the (one) XML record, rather than the other way around, but maybe that makes sense if the optimizer wants to use the same general plan as when the WHERE clause constraint is relaxed to multiple records.

    Am I on the right path, or am I totally using the wrong approach? I thought about using XSLT but was unsure how to reference the code tables.
    I’ve done the best I can constraining the main record to a single row passed to the XMLQUERY. Given Mark’s post (thanks!) should I be joining and constraining the code tables in the SQL WHERE clause too? That’s going to make the query much more complicated, but right now we’re more concerned about performance than complexity.

  • Problems with computer  after upgrade to Mountain Lion.

    I've had a slew of problems after the upgrade. Opening up virtually any programs takes longer, things unexpectadly freeze and the overall performance of my computer is very poor. I even had to do a light reformat of the hard disk because the OS would not start.  After speaking with a Mac rep in L.A., I was told that my processor (Dual core 2) might not fast enough for the software. I asked him if upgrading the Ram would help and he stated that it probably wouldn't.  This is both extremely dissapointing as well as upsetting. I'm a small business and cannot change computers every 2 years.  At this point I really regret upgrading and wish that there's something I can do to bring back the older operating system that I had when I purchased the computer. I own a 2010 Mac Book Pro. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Problem with computing Font width while printing in Landscape mode

    I have an application which prints a table and fills it with some text. I render it on a JComponent using the drawString(theStr, xPos, yPos) and the drawLine(rigtX, topY, rigtX, botY) methods in Graphics2D object. I want to take print-out of the table and also store the image of the table in, say, jpeg format. The print can be in Landscape or Portrait format depending on the size of the JComponent, which the user sets depending on the table size and the font size.
    I have a paintTable( ) method which contains all the drawString( ) and drawLine( ) methods. This method is called from the paint( ) method of the JComponent to achieve normal rendering. The same method is called to get a BufferedImage of the Table. The same method is further called from the implementation of print( ) method from the Printable interface.
    In the paintTable( ) method, I compute the pixel coordinates of the table grid lines and the texts positions in the tables depending on the font width and height obtained as shown below:

    The problem I face is :
    While Printing in Landscape mode the value of the 'width' variable printed as given above is becoming negative. Kindly see the values: FONT WIDTH HEIGHT [-9.37793,11.3203125]. This is happening ONLY DURING PRINTING IN LANDSCAPE MODE. This makes my calculation of table grid line coordinates and text positions completely wrong and the table goes out of place.
    Kindly note that, there is no problem during normal rendering and BuffereredImage creation and also while printing in Portrait mode. The problem happens irrespective of Linux or Windows. The value of 'height' is always correct.
    Kindly let me know: If the method I use to get the 'width' and 'height' is correct ? Is there any better way which will work fine in all platforms under all circumstances.
    Kindly help me to sort out this issue.

  • Satellite M45 s3553: Major problems with computer dumping disk and blacking out

    My laptop just suddenly started freezing and turning itself off while I was using it. I haven't downloaded any programs or files on it in quiet some time so Im pretty sure that its not any new program causing the trouble. I just reformatted it and installed ONLY MSN messenger.
    As I was chatting, a blue screen flashed and then it turned black with the DVD drive just clicking a few times every 5 seconds as thought it was searching for a disc. I am not able to turn it on and it doesn't respond at all.
    Can anyone tell me what happened and what I need to do to fix the problem?

    Well, very strange issue.
    But you are not able to turn on the notebook or the CD/DVD drive?
    If youre not able to turn on the notebook so you should try to remove the battery and to disconnect the AC adaptor from the notebook. Wait several times (> 15min) and then connect the battery and the AC adaptor. Then you can try to start the notebook again.
    But if youre not able to enable the drive so you should check the device manager. Check if the drive appears in the list and remove it from the list.
    Then after new notebook reboot the OS should recognize the drive again.
    The automatically shut downs could be caused by overheating or software malfunction.
    I dont know how old your notebook is but you should check if the CPU and all another devices are properly cooled. Check if the cooling modules run properly.
    Sometimes dust and debris is a reason for such shut downs and therefore you could clean careful the fans.
    But if you have no experience so you should ask a computer expert for a help.
    PS: The vacuum cleaner is a simple tool for the fans cleaning

  • Problem with computer or OS?

    Right, my laptop is all up to date, a MacBook Air 13 inch late 2013 model, and as of late, I've discovered something that is hindering my ability to work on programs like pages and other apps like that, pretty much every app I've used has this problem.
    I can't put it in to words but I will try my best. It's like when you click off of an application, so that the window is still up but for example in pages you won't get anything typing, and it comes up with the little sound effect to tell you that you aren't typing anything, but the problem is that the programs do it automatically and by themselves, and I will be writing something for school and I'll write what I think is a paragraph and actually look back at my screen and see that only a sentence has been writing because it clicked off of itself and I didn't realise.
    Of course I can click back onto it, but when I'm in a flow of work I don't want to be doing that as that will slow me down. Are there any fixes for this? is this a problem that other people are facing, can anything be done about this problem? If people need to know, I type by resting my hands on the computer, and having them sit there, not moving, so I think that it may be touching the touchpad, or there may be some dust in the touchpad or something but I don't know.
    Does anyone have any help for me or is it a problem I'm facing? Thank you, it's driving me crazy.

    One possibility is a third party software conflict.  Some ways to test this out include seeing if the bad behavior persists when: (a) turning off all login items, and/or (b) logging in as a different user, e.g., Guest, and/or starting up in Safe Mode.  

  • Problems with applications & item names, possibly related to malware?

    I apologize for posting twice about a similar topic but I found out a new important piece of information that could possibly help others as well.
    Previously I asked why safari keeps shutting down and citing the plug in "microsoftgenuine.so" and was told it was the flashback trojan. Is this trojan really infecting as many computers as they say or are users overreacting? The dr.web thing told me I did not have it but when I ran "defaults read ~/.MacOSX/environment DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES" in my terminal, "/Users/Shared/.MicrosoftOfficeGenuine.so" showed up. Offfffff course. The other two lines that I was told to put in my terminal came back as "do not exist" though. I have the report crash if needed, from safari.
    Also, some right click options as well as my devices display names such as n152 and SD3 instead of "open with" etc.
    This problem began long before the application crashes.
    I'm quite careful- do not enter my password unless I know why I am being asked for it, do not update software except from my desktop (aka don't go to 3rd party sites) and I run sophos as recommended by my school, although another user told me it was crap. I don't believe I intentionally downloaded any program and certainly did not install one asking for my password except for standard things that I downloaded from trusted sites.
    Also when clicking on links from pages I will be directed to an entirely different page. It's usually when I click on a link from a google search. It will take me to a yellow pages search or something that is minutely related to my search terms. I'll have to click "back" multiple times until I'm returned to the initial page and when I click the SAME link a second time, it takes me to the site it should.
    Annnny tips would be appreciated.  Unfortunately I do not own my own hard drive, much less the multiple ones suggested to me. I back up school files on discs occasionally but that is all.

    Current recommendations is turn Java off.  Generally you don't need it.  Do not confuse it with Javascript which you do need for your browsers.   
    You can disable in the browser you are using and/or more globally using the Java Preferences too (in Utilities), General tab (uncheck the checkboxes).

    Protect Yourself from the Mac OS X Java Vulnerability
    If it turns out you need it for some specific application or web site that you trust then turn it on only when running that application or visiting that site. If your work requires Java be enabled then at least disable it in your browsers.
    If you do need to run Java, be sure that you pick up the Java Software Update 7 posted recently that takes 10.6 and 10.7 up to Java SE 6 revision 31.

  • Problems with computer authorization in iTunes

    two problems:
    One of my apps (bought from iTunes on the iPhone) won't synch to my computer. I get an error message that the computer is not authorized, but when I go store>Authorise This Computer, I get the message that it is already authorised. What do I do?
    Secondly, it seems that when I upgraded my OS to Snow Leopard, iTunes decided that my computer was a second computer. I have now used 2 of my 5 allowed authorisations for iTunes. Will this happen again if I upgrade to Lion, and if it is an error, how can I get it corrected? It's very unfair because at the rate computers die, I'll suddenly find I can't synch any of my purchases anymore

    I'm having a similar problem.
    Every now and then, a track from a ripped CD or from iTunes or from eMusic will "look" OK in iTunes (or on my iPod), but when the track plays, it gets partially through and it jumps to the next track in the playlist.
    For example, if playback of track 1 pauses and jumps to track 2 at 1:30 into playback of track 1, & I click on 1:31 or later in track 1, the rest of track 1 will play fine. But if the playback of track 1 starts at the before the "skip point," the track will stop & iTunes (or iPod) goes on to the next track in the playlist. If I locate the file (on my external drive) and play it in the finder, there's always buzzing sound at the point where the iTunes jumps to the next track.
    For ripped CD's this is not a huge deal, I just re-rip & usually all is well. With eMusic, I can download again, but with iTunes, I have to file a complaint & so far they've just credited my account, which is OK, but time consuming.
    At first I thought the problem was with my optical drive, but then the problem started happening with downloads from iTunes and eMusic as well. NONE of these shenanigans happened before I upgraded to iTunes 7.6, so I'm wondering if that's where the problem is. One thing's for sure: I'm not going to "jump" at the next upgrade of iTunes!
    I'm totally stumped & bummed. iTunes used to be a really good friend, now I find myself wondering if I should bother with putting my entire CD collection on iTunes if it's no longer as reliable as it used to be.
